• Report from OpenWorld Shanghai

  Oracle OpenWorld Shanghai 2013 was held July 22nd – 25th at the International Expo Center in Shanghai, China. The conference drew over 19,000 attendees from 44 countries. In addition, 580 CxOs attended the Executive Edge program, and 430+ partners attended the Oracle Partner Network Exchange. The conference included a number of sessions on Big Data, Business Analytics, Business Intelligence and Enterprise Performance Management delivered by Oracle, our partners and customers.  I had the pleasure to attend the conference and delivered three sessions focused on Oracle’s Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) applications. Each of my sessions was well-attended, and in a few cases was standing room only, so there is clearly a lot of interest in the China market in EPM. The EPM and BI demo pods in the DemoGrounds at the conference also received a lot of traffic. In addition to the conference sessions I delivered, I had several meetings with customers and partners in Shanghai.These sessions and meetings I attended made clear the interest that customers in China have in improving their planning, management reporting, financial reporting, and profitability management processes. In fact, with the China Ministry of Finance now standardizing on XBRL for annual reporting across multiple agencies in China, there is a great opportunity here for our disclosure management application. • Customer Highlight: NTT DOCOMO

  NTT DOCOMO is the largest mobile operator in Japan, and serves over 13 million smartphone customers. Due to their growing data processing and scalability needs, they turned to Oracle's Cloud Application Foundation products for an integral soultion. At Oracle OpenWorld 2012, we first showcased NTT DOCOMO as a customer who was utilizing Oracle Coherence to process mobile data at a rate of 700,000 events per second (and then using Hadoop for distributed processing of big data). Overall, this Led to a 50% cost reduction due to the ultra-high velocity traffic processing of their customers' events. Recently, on October 7th, 2013, Oracle and NTT DOCOMO were proud to again announce a partnership around another key component of Oracle CAF: WebLogic Server. WebLogic was recently deployed as the application platform of choice to run DOCOMO's mission-critical data system ALADIN, which connects nationwide shops and information centers. ALADIN, which also utilizes Oracle Database and Oracle Tuxedo, is based on Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE), which has allowed the company to operate smoothly while minimizing additional development and modification associated with the migration of application server products. • Web Host which provides Latex and embedded programming [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? 5 answers Hopefully this is a reasonable place to ask this question. I'll confess I'm a little green when it comes to web programming and websites in general (though not programming). I'm a Math and Physics person. I want to make a personal webpage containing a Math and Physics blog. Ideally the blog should support latex, and embedded programs. This would allow me to write, say, an equation for an orbit and then show what the orbit would look like (perhaps letting the reader configure parameters). The programming language can be javascript (though it isn't my favorite language). My budget is around 5 dollars a month. Does anybody have suggestions for a good Shared host with these kind of requirements? And a small aside, It would be useful if I can move the website content, since I might live at a university in the nearish future. They would have servers which could support such a webpage.

• How to set java_home on Windows 7?

  I went to the Environment Variables in 'System' in the control panel and made 2 new variables. one for user variables and one for system variables, both named JAVA_HOME and both pointing to C:\Sun\SDK\jdk\bin but for some reason, I still get the below error when running a java command...   I might be wrong on this, but I no longer see heavy Business and Web services being hosted using J2ee technologies (Especially EJBs). Having known the power and scalability of J2ee applications, what is keeping developers/decision makers to restrict themselves to Core Java (POJOs) or even other web technologies like PHP, python. Is it the development time? Is it the Ease of configuration? (I feel this should not be a strong reason with Java EE 6, things are simplified) Of course scripting languages are faster to develop, we cannot ignore the fact that they are inherently not-as-scalable as Java Applications are (using App servers)

• How are java.lang.Object's protected methods protected from subclasses?

  The keyword protected grants access to classes in the same package and subclasses (http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/javaOO/accesscontrol.html). Now, every class has java.lang.Object as superclass (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/lang/Object.html). Hence I conclude that every class may access java.lang.Object's methods even if they are protected. Take a look at the following example: public class Testclass { public Object getOne() throws CloneNotSupportedException { return this.clone(); } public Object getTwo() throws CloneNotSupportedException { return ((Object) this).clone(); } } While getOne() compiles fine, getTwo() gives Testclass.java:6: clone() has protected access in java.lang.Object return ((Object) this).clone(); I neither understand why getTwo() doesn't compile nor what's the difference (regarding the access of java.lang.Objects members) with getOne().

• Besides EAR and EJB, what do I get from a J2EE app server that I don't get in a servlet container li

  We use Tomcat to host our WAR based applications. We are servlet container compliant J2EE applications with the exception of org.apache.catalina.authenticator.SingleSignOn. We are being asked to move to a commercial J2EE application server. The first downside to changing that I see is the cost. No matter what the charges for the application server, Tomcat is free. Second is the complexity. We don't use either EJB nor EAR features (of course not, we can't), and have not missed them. What then are the benefits I'm not seeing? What are the drawbacks that I haven't mentioned? Mentioned were... JTA - Java Transaction API - We control transaction via database stored procedures. JPA - Java Persistence API - We use JDBC and again stored procedures to persist. JMS - Java Message Service - We use XML over HTTP for messaging. This is good, please more!

  Test.java and SetWord.java belong to the package tools. Test.java needs to access SetWord but an odd error 'cannot find' SetWord appear. The package limits the visibility, it works without 'package tools;' lines. How can I acess the SetWords with Test in the same pkg? In general, how can classes access one another in the same pkg? • Accessing the next 3 element values in a Map knowing the key.

  I have java.util.LinkedHashMap with Integer as Key and Character as Value. I know the key of the element i want to access. In addition to the element value for the key, i also want to retrieve the next 3 element values so that i can append all the 4 element values and form a string with 4 chars. I am asking for something like how we will do in a java.util.List. Is this feasible by any means in a Map/ordered map? Please suggest any other data structure that can help me achieve this. I am using Java 6.

  Oracle Database Vault allows security administrators to protect a database from privileged account access to application data.  Database objects can be placed in protected realms, which can be accessed only if a specific set of conditions are met.  Oracle Database Vault 11gR2 11.2.0.1 is now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12.You can now enable Database Vault 11gR2 on your existing E-Business Suite 11.2.0.1 Database instance.  If you already have DB Vault 10gR2 or 11gR1 enabled in your E-Business Suite environment, you can now upgrade to the 11gR2 Database.  We also support EBS patching with Database Vault 11.2.0.1 enabled.   Who should apply this patch: This PS contains defect fixes and changes that are specific to the Oracle Exalytics In-Memory box. You should install this PS only in the following circumstances: You are installing Essbase on the Exalytics In-Memory Machine, or There is an urgent need for a defect fix that is included in this PS Customers considering this PS for a platform other than the Exalytics In-Memory Machine should carefully review the list of fixed defects. If there is not a truly urgent need for a defect fix included in this PS, Oracle recommends customers install the upcoming Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) 11.1.2.2.000 release, which will contain an update, instead of this patch set.
