• Embedding a File Explorer instance in a WinForms app form

  My (C#, .NET 3.5) app generates files and, in addition to raising events that can be caught and reacted to, I want to display the target folder to the user in a form. The file-list is being shown within the same form as other information. I'm using an instance of the WebBrowser control (System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser), then navigating to the folder. This shows some default view of the explorer window, with the file summary panel on the left and the files in the 'Tiles' (large icon and text) view. e.g. wb.Navigate(@"c:\path\to\folder\"); I'd like to suppress the panel and to view the file list in the Details view. The user can get to this via a right-click, context menu, but I'd like it to come up automatically. I'd rather not have to build my own TreeView, DataGridView or whatever; the WebBrowser control does all the updating and re-sorting and whatnot 'for free'. Does anybody have a better suggestion? A different control to use or some additional arguments to pass to the control? And if I could trap events (e.g. files being selected/renamed/double-clicked, etc.) then all the better!

• ASP.NET MVC: what mechanic returns ViewModel objects?

  As I understand it, Domain Models are classes that only describe the data (aggregate roots). They are POCOs and do not reference outside libraries (nothing special). View models on the other hand are classes that contain domain model objects as well as all the interface specific objects like SelectList. A ViewModel includes using System.Web.Mvc;. A repository pulls data out of a database and feeds them to us through domain model objects. What mechanic or device creates the view model objects, populating them from a database? Would it be a factory that has database access? Would you bleed the view specific classes like System.Web.Mvc in to the Repository? Something else? For example, if you have a drop down list of cities, you would reference a SelectList object in the root of your View Model object, right next to your DomainModel reference: public class CustomerForm { public CustomerAddress address {get;set;} public SelectList cities {get;set;} } The cities should come from a database and be in the form of a select list object. The hope is that you don't create a special Repository method to extract out just the distinct cities, then create a redundant second SelectList object only so you have the right data types.

• finding a string of random characters (with possible errors) within a large string of random charact

  I am trying to search a large string w/o spaces for a smaller string of characters. using regex I can easily find perfect matches but I can't figure out how to find partial matches. by partial matches i mean one or two extra characters in the string or one or two characters that have been changed, or one of each. the first and last characters will always match though. this would be similar to a spell checker but there are no spaces and the strings dont contain actual words, just random hex digits. i figured a way to find the string if there are no extra characters using indexOf(string.charAt(0)) and indexOf(charAt(string.length()-1) and looping through the characters between the two indexes. but this can be problematic when dealing with randomized characters because of the possibility of finding the first and last characters at the correct spacing but none of the middle characters matching. i've been scratching my head for hours on this issue. any ideas?

  I've been trying to convert my aspx pages to cshtml and having an issue with rendering partial pages from another folder. What I used to do: <% Html.RenderPartial("~/Views/Inquiry/InquiryList.ascx", Model.InquiryList.OrderBy("InquiryId", MvcContrib.Sorting.SortDirection.Descending));%> I would think that the equivalent would be: @Html.RenderPartial("~/Views/Inquiry/_InquiryList.cshtml", Model.InquiryList.OrderBy("InquiryId", MvcContrib.Sorting.SortDirection.Descending)) This is obviously not working, I am getting the following error. CS1973: 'System.Web.Mvc.HtmlHelper' has no applicable method named 'Partial' but appears to have an extension method by that name. Extension methods cannot be dynamically dispatched. Consider casting the dynamic arguments or calling the extension method without the extension method syntax. How would I achieve this with using the Razor view engine?

• UINavigationController placement problem

  Hey, I'm having this problem and I can't seem to figure out why! I want to use a UINavigationController, but I don't want to use it through out the entire application. So, in the UIViewController I was to add it to, I define: UINavigationController *navigationController; and the @property, @synthesize and dealloc. In the viewDidLoad method, I add: navigationController = [[UINavigationController alloc] init]; navigationController.navigationBar.barStyle = UIBarStyleBlack; and when the relevant UIViewController is loaded, I add: [navigationController pushViewController:viewController animated:NO]; and make the old view disappear and the UINavigationController's view to appear. Everything works fine except that the navigation bar appears about 20pixels too low (dragging the entire view down and out of the screen). If I set the UINavigationController's view frame parameter manually to start at 0,0, it jumps there, but only after about a second, so that you can see the navigation bar starting at a certain location and only then jumping to another (and it is ugly!). I have done the exact same thing in the past and had no problem with it. Does anyone know what may cause this? Thanks,

• Best Practice for Shell Layout and Switching Views - Prism, SL4, On Demand Load Modules

  I am learning Prism, and I have a question on the best approach for the main Shell. Assuming the Shell has 2 regions: Toolbar, Main. The toolbar has 3 main buttons that each represent a different On Demand Load Module. Each of these modules currently register themselves as fitting in the Main Region. When I click one of the buttons I want to do the following: Notify any active view that its switching, with an option to cancel if there is a pending action still required. This might cascade to child views. If the action isn't cancelled then load the on demand module if it has not yet been loaded, else activate it within the region. Should these three modules all fit in the same Region or should my shell have 3 regions defined within content presenters? One of the areas I got stuck on was that when you register a view from the Module Initialize, it doesn't get added with a strongly typed name, so when I tried to determine if my view was already added to the region with GetView(viewname) it always returns null, so I end up adding another view to the region.

• Advice on optimzing speed for a Stored Procedure that uses Views

  Based on a previous question and with a lot of help from Damir Sudarevic (thanks) I have the following sql code which works great but is very slow. Can anyone suggest how I can speed this up and optimise for speed. I am now using SQL Server Express 2008 (not 2005 as per my original question). What this code does is retrieves parameters and their associated values from several tables and rotates the table in a form that can be easily compared. Its great for one of two rows of data but now I am testing with 100 rows and to run GetJobParameters takes over 7 minutes to complete?   Hi, I have an object with a property called "name". This object has a sub object that has a property called "name" as well. Transaction.name Transaction.TransactionItem TransactionItem.name I bind Transaction object to a partial control as usual: Html.TextBox("name", Model.name)% Model is a Transaction object. And I bind TransactionItems: < if (Model.mtTransactionItem != null) { foreach (var item in Model.mtTransactionItem) { % <%= Ajax.ActionLink(item.name, "ShowItem", new { id = item.id }, new AjaxOptions { UpdateTargetId = "dialog-form" })% And when I update the one of the transaction items through an ajax call I pass the entire transaction object to the partial view. When I debug I check the Model.name property, and it has a proper value. But on the page shows the name of TransactionItem value instead of the name of Transaction value. What do I do wrong? I have checked this problem in MVC 1.0 and MVC 2.0 framework.

  Hi, I would like to use autocompletebox with a list of values, but also add new values to the list if a user enters one that isn't present. I currently have a string property in my view model called 'Comment'. Currently this is bound to a textbox in the view - user types a comment and the view model is updated. Simple. To save time, my customer would like it to autocomplete from previous values, so the way I thought to do this is something like: ViewModel public string Comment; public ObservableCollection<string> CommentsList { ... } (populate the CommentsList when the viewmodel is created) View <AutoCompleteComboBox ItemsSource="{Binding CommentsList}" SelectedItem="{Binding Comment, Mode=TwoWay/> So when the user selects a value, it saves the value in the Comment property. This works fine if the user selects an item in the list, but if the user types in a new value, the comment property is not updated (it is null because the selected item was not in the list). • How to change id value when using Html.DropDownListFor helper in asp.net mvc 2.0?

  Hi I have a partial view that has something like this <%= Html.DropDownListFor(m => m.SelectedProductName, Model.ProductList, "Select a Product") %> Now you can create a new product and edit a existing product. Both editing and creating use the same form. The create is on the main page on load up. Edit popus up in a jquery u.i model dialog and renders a new partial view. So as far as the page is concerned is that I have 2 dropdown boxes with the same "id" which is bad since they should be unique. So how do I change the id? So when the edit loads it might have a id of "editSelectedProductName"? I tried to do this in the view model public string SelectedProductName{ get; set; } ViewModelConstructor() { SelectedProductName = "EditSelectedProductName"; } But it seems to not care and keeps using "SelectedProductName" as the product name.   Scenario: Entity Framework 4 , POCO templates and Master Detail relation. Or any other way? the Details collection in the Master entity is a FixUpCollection, so it ought to track the changes IMO. So, any ideas how to make this work W/O killing the POCO'ness too much?

  I have a partial view which renders a table. On page load, I am using JQuery to perform Zebra Stripping on it. Whenever ajax refreshes the table, DOM elements are updated, but since JQuery code to do the Zebra Stripping is not executed; table looks ugly. I have tried adding Javascript in my partial view if( Request.IsAjaxRequest() ) return PartialView( "AdministrationGrid", Users ); but javascript is not executed. I guess the only way to execute the Javascript as reply is to do: return JavaScript( "alert( '' )" ); Anyone with an idea how can I achieve this? I thought about JQuery Live, but it is used to bind itself to events.

• How to know when StatusBar size changed (iPhone)

  I have UITabBarController with 2 tabs. One resizes just fine, when StatusBar size changes (emulator "Toggle In-Call Status Bar" menu item). The other one doesn't. The problematic tab item contains a static view, which dynamically loads one or another view depending on certain things. While getting this setup working I discovered that main tab view did NOT automagically send e.g. viewWillAppear and viewWillDisappear messages to my dynamic subviews.   I'm trying to do some parameter estimation and want to choose parameter estimates that minimize the square error in a predicted equation over about 30 variables. If the equation were linear, I would just compute the 30 partial derivatives, set them all to zero, and use a linear-equation solver. But unfortunately the equation is nonlinear and so are its derivatives. If the equation were over a single variable, I would just use Newton's method (also known as Newton-Raphson). The Web is rich in examples and code to implement Newton's method for functions of a single variable. Given that I have about 30 variables, how can I program a numeric solution to this problem using Newton's method? I have the equation in closed form and can compute the first and second derivatives, but I don't know quite how to proceed from there. I have found a large number of treatments on the web, but they quickly get into heavy matrix notation. I've found something moderately helpful on Wikipedia, but I'm having trouble translating it into code. Where I'm worried about breaking down is in the matrix algebra and matrix inversions. I can invert a matrix with a linear-equation solver but I'm worried about getting the right rows and columns, avoiding transposition errors, and so on. To be quite concrete: I want to work with tables mapping variables to their values. I can write a function of such a table that returns the square error given such a table as argument. I can also create functions that return a partial derivative with respect to any given variable. I have a reasonable starting estimate for the values in the table, so I'm not worried about convergence. I'm not sure how to write the loop that uses an estimate (table of value for each variable), the function, and a table of partial-derivative functions to produce a new estimate. That last is what I'd like help with. Any direct help or pointers to good sources will be warmly appreciated. Edit: Since I have the first and second derivatives in closed form, I would like to take advantage of them and avoid more slowly converging methods like simplex searches.

• Scrolling with two fingers with a UIScrollView

  I have an app where my main view accepts both touchesBegan and touchesMoved, and therefore takes in single finger touches, and drags. I want to implement a UIScrollView, and I have it working, but it overrides the drags, and therefore my contentView never receives them. I'd like to implement a UIScrollview, where a two finger drag indicates a scroll, and a one finger drag event gets passed to my content view, so it performs normally. Do I need create my own subclass of UIScrollView? • touchesBegin & touchesMove Xcode Obj C Question

  So I have my app working good when you press and drag along. I also have UIButtons set to Touch Down in Interface Builder. As well when you drag you need to drag from the outside of the UIButton. You cannot click on the UIButton and drag to the other. So basically just being able to click on a button and slide your finger over and activate the other button without having to press and slide from outside of the button. • SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services and the Report Viewer

  I am having an issue embedding my report into an aspx page. Here's my setup: 1 Server running SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services 1 Workstation running XP and VS 2005 The server is not on a domain. Reporting Services is a default installation. I have one report called TestMe in a folder called TestReports using a shared datasource. If I view the report in Report Manager, it renders fine. If I view the report using the http ://myserver/reportserver url it renders fine. If I view the report using the http ://myserver/reportserver?/TestReports/TestMe it renders fine. If I try to view the report using http ://myserver/reportserver/TestReports/TestMe, it just goes to the folder navigation page of the home directory. My web application is impersonating somebody specific to get around the server not being on a domain. When I call the report from the report viewer using http ://myserver/reportserver as the server and /TestReports/TestMe as the path I get this error: For security reasons DTD is prohibited in this XML document. To enable DTD processing set the ProhibitDtd property on XmlReaderSettings to false and pass the settings into XmlReader.Create method. When I change the server to http ://myserver/reportserver? I get this error when I run the report: Client found response content type of '', but expected 'text/xml'. The request failed with an empty response. I have been searching for a while and haven't found anything that fixes my issue. Please let me know if there is more information needed. Thanks in advance, Kendra

  Hi, I have a partial view that should not be cached in a output cached MVC view. Usually you write non-cached content by using Response.WriteSubstitution. The problem is that WriteSubstitution takes as a parameter a HttpResponseSubstitutionCallback callback which looks like this: public delegate string HttpResponseSubstitutionCallback(System.Web.HttpContext context) This is where things get complicated since there is no easy/fun way to generate the html on the fly. You have to do a hack like this. So the question is: Is there an easier way to make a partial view not cached ?

• Django DRY Feeds

  I'm using the Django Feeds Framework and it's really nice, very intuitive and easy to use. But, I think there is a problem when creating links to feeds in HTML. For example: <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="{{ feed_title }}" href="{{ url_of_feed }}" /> Link's HREF attribute can be easily found out, just use reverse() But, what about the TITLE attribute? Where the template engine should look for this? Even more, what if the feed is build up dinamically and the title depends on parameters (like this)? I can't come up with a solution that "seems" DRY to me... All that I can come up with is using context processors o template tags, but it gets messy when the context procesor/template tag has to find parameters to construct the Feed class, and writing this I realize I don't even know how to create a Feed instance myself within the view. If I put all this logic in the view, it would not be just one view. Also, the value for TITLE would be in the view AND in the feed.

• load google annotated chart within jquery ui tab content via ajax method

  Hi, I am encountering an issue with trying to load a google annotated chart (http://code.google.com/apis/visualization/documentation/gallery/annotatedtimeline.html) within a jquery ui tab using content via ajax method (http://jqueryui.com/demos/tabs/#ajax). The page renders and once the chart loads, the browser window goes white. However, you can see the tab partial flash just before the chart appears to finish rendering (the chart never actually displays).
