• How can i turn a virtualbox disk partion to be my main boot system? (read description)

  I recently had windows xp installed on my pc and chose to try ubuntu but i did a full install with ubuntu. I luckily chose to create a backup windows iso before the install and now want to reinstall windows but i couldnt find a sufficient program to mount the iso to my cd disk. My question is how can i burn the disk using VirtualBox or even how can i transform a virtual box partion to my main OS system?? thx in advance

  please tell I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and if I have already created ext4 ./ (partition) and on the same volume I have ./home so if I create a separate partition ./home will the software that I install for example from Ubuntu Download Center will automatically go to ./home (partition) or still ./ (root) because I'm using PlayOnLinux and Wine and all its software only installs to ./home (file system disk) where emulated copy of Windows Xp installed also and it's a lack of space.

• UBS drive on Ubuntu on VM Virtualbox

  OSX is my host OS I have windows xp and Ubuntu 10.10 on guest OS. They both work great. When I eject USB flash drive from host OS, it appears in windows guest OS but it does not appear in Ubuntu Guest OS. I never run both guest OS at the same time. its always either or. I am running, VM virtualbox 4.1.10 and installed latest guest additions and also installed VM virtualbox extension pack. Thanks for your help

  I have a Mac server running OS X Server 10.5 Server and as a PDC for our Windows XP systems. I'd like to use the OS X Server as a PDC for our Windows 7 boxes but the version of Samba in OS X Server is not compatible with Windows 7. It appears that my best bet is to use Ubuntu Server as my PDC. I want the Windows boxes to obtain authentication information from the Mac Server's LDAP. Any suggestions are appreciated.

  Last week, I upgraded my operating system to Ubuntu 12.10 from 12.04, and the internet stopped working on two virtual machines (launched with virtualbox), Windows XP and OSX Snow Leopard. OSX also stopped working completely at first, but I fixed that by switching to the 64 bit option in the vbox settings. I switching to bridged networking from NAT restored the internet to Windows, but not to OSX. Does anybody know what I could be doing wrong?

• Cannot access Windows via grub after new dual-boot Ubuntu install

  I previously installed Ubuntu on a computer that had Windows XP on it and got it successfully to run alongside it. (access both OS systems) Now I installed Ubuntu again on my MSI notebook with Windows 8.1, and I cannot access the GRUB without hitting escape on startup, and even then, I can no longer open windows. Before all of this, I created a recovery point, file history and saved a back up on a external hard drive incase I did anything wrong. Now how can I revert my computer back to it's state before installation.

• Apache - child process exited with status 255

  I am running Windows 7 64-bit with an older version of (Apache 2.0.59) and PHP 5.2 - just switched from XP and wanted to keep the same versions. Everything will initially be working fine, but then I'll be trying to load a page and Apache crashes. I'll get an error in the browser that says "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." Then Apache stops running. Sometimes it can be restarted, but then crashes again on the next page load. Sometimes it can't even be restarted at all. Looking in the Apache error logs, I see a series of messages that goes something like: [notice] Apache/2.0.59 (Win32) PHP/5.2.13 configured -- resuming normal operations [notice] Server built: Jul 27 2006 15:55:03 [notice] Parent: Created child process 1220 [notice] Child 1220: Child process is running [notice] Child 1220: Acquired the start mutex. [notice] Child 1220: Starting 250 worker threads. [notice] Parent: child process exited with status 255 -- Restarting. I have just come from Win XP where I never had any problems - is this an issue with my Apache version on Win7? Or perhaps it's a configuration issue? • How to install Konica Minolta PagePro 1300W to Windows 7 64-bit?

  I recently switched to Windows 7 (Home Pro, 64-bit) to discover that my Konica Minolta PagePro 1300W printer no longer works. When connected, Win7 prompts that it can not install a driver for the device. I have done a lot of googling to solve this problem, with no luck so far. From Konica Minolta official website, I can find drivers only for Windows XP/2000. My current reasoning is that they currently don't and most likely are not going to support Win7 let alone 64-bit version of it for this rather old printer. So my question is: does anyone have any good tips on how to make this printer work on my system? Is there any other place I could look for drivers, or in generally, do you know any workarounds that could let me printer work? One of the workaround I have been considering is to install a Windows XP / Ubuntu Linux on a virtualbox and use that system when I really really need to printer. This is of course not the optimal solution, but would let me possibly to use the printer until I buy a newer model.

• Sending microphone input over Remote Desktop 7.0

  I am using Remote Desktop 7 (the new version that came out with Windows 7) to control a Windows XP Pro machine. I have selected "Record from this computer" in the Remote Audio settings. When I connect to the machine, go to the control panel, open the sound panel, and go to the audio tab, I find that the default sound playback device is "Microsoft RDP Audio Driver". However, there is no default sound recording device. As expected, my IP phone thinks there is no recording device. If I am sitting in front of the computer with a mic plugged in, it works just fine. Has anybody else been able to get this work appropriately? Is there anything that I have to setup on the XP machine to get this working? Thanks in advance. Edit: As John T pointed out below, you have to be connecting to a Windows 7 Enterprise or Ultimate machine for this to work. I've also found out that Multi-monitor support has the same requirement.

When I start the client connect to the local DC and get an authentification error (Code 0x507). I've already done the following: • Server Setup to run as a standalone local "DC" to provide Terminal services to a single application. Remote Desktop Session Host CAL License is running & operational, RD Gateway Manager w/ Local Server RAP & CAP running NLA & operational etc..... Server has NLA & temporary use of port 3389 (which is directly connected to and accessible from the internet (I am planning to change the port to 443, but want to get the current system running first). • XP Client(s): RDP-Version on win xp clients is 6.1 If had SP2, then added SP3 and edited the registry settings to allow NLA, by: Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa In the details pane, right-click Security Packages, and then click Modify. In the Value data box, type tspkg. Leave any data that is specific to other SSPs, and then click OK. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders In the details pane, right-click SecurityProviders, and then click Modify.   I want to know the REAL difference between Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional/Utimate. In India, the cost of different versions: Ultimate - 11,200 INR Professional - 10,700 INR Home Premium - 6,600 INR The absolute cost of the first two is so high to me that the difference (500 INR) doesn't matter. So to me there is really no choice between the first two - If I decide to buy the Professional version, I'd rather go for Ultimate itself. What I want to know is, whether Home Premium is enough for my needs. I tried searching for comparison but many look like just marketing junk from MS. They are short and vague. According to this page, the major differences between Pro and HomePremium are Run many Windows XP productivity programs in Windows XP Mode. Connect to company networks easily and more securely with Domain Join. You can do both in Pro but not in Home Premium. I intend to use my Windows 7 for a small business - just starting up. So I'll be dealing with the following: All kinds of development tools, servers Very important - I will run Virtual Machine Software (MS VPC or VMWare or Sun VirtualBox etc..) My system will be acting as the server for most purposes till I can afford dedicated servers. Connect the system to a variety of network devices (PCs, Printers, etc..) Run productivity, business and financial apps Any other small software startup business requirement that I haven't thought of yet. Professional (and Ultimate) is twice as expensive as Home Premium. So it'd be great if someone can point out the things you cannot do with Home Premium, when you use it like I explained above, so that I can make a decision about which one to buy. I need some real-life experiences so that I can make an informed decision - not a decision based on marketing junk.

• AirPort Express Discoverability

  I bought an AirPort Express to enable music in a different part of a friend's house using the AirTunes feature. Unfortunately, iTunes or the AirPort Utility don't reliably discover the existence of the device. If I use the "Configure Other..." function within the AirPort Utility and enter the AirPort Express' IP address and password, then I can reliably get access in a daughter window to configure it. This seems to nudge the underlying AirPort Utility into "finding" and displaying the AirPort Express, which it doesn't do on its own even after clicking the "Rescan" button. iTunes then also seems to cotton on to this discovery and present the AiportExpress as an AirTunes option at the bottom right of iTunes. Things then works as we'd like them to. If I close down the AirPort Utility, then iTunes loses the AirPort Express AirTunes speaker, often giving "An unkown error (-15006) occurred while connecting to the remote speaker". Of course, starting the Airport Utility, forcing it to recognise the Airport Express and then starting iTunes, isn't the ease of use I was after. Background info: iTunes is running on Windows XP. The AirPort Express is running in wireless client mode (i.e. is connecting to an unsecured wireless network in the house with nothing connected to its ethernet port). The network router is a Swisscom Motorola 3347NWG (with firmware 7.8.5r1). I have already tried: Disabling the Windows XP firewall Updating the AirPort Express firmware, the AirPort Utility and the router firmware Ensuring Wireless privacy and similar potetnially problematic router settings are off Solutions, or even just ideas of other things to try would be gratefully received.

  I have a VPS running Windows Web Server 2008 R2. I'm able to connect using Remote Desktop from my home PC (Windows 7), personal laptop (Windows 7), and work laptop (Windows XP). However, I cannot connect from my work PC (Windows 7). I receive the error "The logon attempt failed" in the RDP client, and the server event log shows "An account failed to log on" with this explanation: Subject: Security ID: NULL SID Account Name: - Account Domain: - Logon ID: 0x0 Logon Type: 3 Account For Which Logon Failed: Security ID: NULL SID Account Name: username Account Domain: hostname Failure Information: Failure Reason: Unknown user name or bad password. Status: 0xc000006d Sub Status: 0xc0000064 Process Information: Caller Process ID: 0x0 Caller Process Name: - Network Information: Workstation Name: JESSE-PC Source Network Address: - Source Port: - Detailed Authentication Information: Logon Process: NtLmSsp Authentication Package: NTLM Transited Services: - Package Name (NTLM only): - Key Length: 0 I can connect from the offending work PC if I start up Windows XP Mode and use the RDP client inside that. The server is part of a domain but my account is local, so I'm logging in using a username of the form hostname\username. None of the clients are part of a domain. The server uses a self-signed certificate, and connecting from home I get a warning about that, but connecting from work I just get the logon error.

• Windows Authentication behaves oddly when VPN'd

  Hi all We've got a few apps that rely on windows authentication - a couple of web apps with AD auth turned on and we usually connect to our SQL servers with windows auth. This normally runs without a hitch. It doesn't work so well if we're VPN'd to a client site though. SSMS Opening SSMS normally from the start menu, then picking a server that normally accepts windows auth, results in a message saying: Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) If I drop to a command prompt and use runas /user:domain\user to launch SSMS I can successfully windows auth to our SQL server instances with that ssms process. If I look in task manager, both copies of ssms.exe (start menu vs runas) have the same user, and I can see no discernible differences between the processes in procexp. AD Auth websites If I open IE and browse to any of our websites that require an authenticated windows user, I get the "who are you" prompt, and that dialog thinks I'm whoever the VPN user is. I can click "Use another account" and authenticate that way though. Outlook Even Outlook prompts for a username when we are VPN'd! It's affecting our Win7 and Vista machines. It's been a while since we had an XP box, but I don't recall having this issue on XP for what it's worth. The VPN connections are just using the built in windows VPN connections, they're not fancy cisco VPNs or anything of that nature. Does anyone know how to tell windows that I'd like to be my normal old primary domain user rather than the VPN user when authenticating to resources in our domain? Heck, I'd be happy with a solution that prompted me with the "who are you" if I was trying to access windows auth requiring resources on the client's VPN. Thanks! Apologies if this is more a superuser question, I wasn't sure which site it best suited. It's about networking and infrastructure and plagues all of our developers here, so I hope it's a serverfault Q.

• Internal disk not correctly recognised by Windows 7

  i'm having problems configuring a disk in a brand new, clean windows-7 install. here are some system specifics- . disk- western digital velociraptor wd6000hlhx . mobo- gigabyte z77x-ud3h . bios sata-mode set to ahci [not raid], w/disk connected to sata0 [6gb/s hi-speed sata]. . windows 7 enterprise sp1 x64 the disk is recognized by bios and correctly identified [name & size ok]. the disk is also recognized by windows on a h/w level, but it won't show up in the explorer. windows reports the device is working correctly. windows disk manager shows the drive, but says it's uninitialized and has no partitions [which is incorrect]. if i try to initialize the drive, windows throws an error saying that it "cannot find the file specified". [which file???] before connecting the drive to the new machine, i partitioned and formatted the disk under windows xp sp2, giving it 2 partitions [mbr, not gpt] and copying over a boatload of data. obviously none of this appears under windows 7. removing the disk from the new machine and replacing it back in the windows xp machine shows the disk and all data are intact and functional. i'd like to have windows 7 recognize the disk w/o having to lose the data and start over. is this possible? if so, how would i do that? I checked this post, but even though the problem seems identical, the information didn't help. any help appreciated. thanks!

• Prohibit installers from modifying Windows Firewall rules

  Some application installers tamper with the Windows Firewall rules. I would like to prohibit such automated modifications of the Windows Firewall rules on Windows 7 machines (which use the Windows 7 version of Windows Firewall). Is there some setting that would accomplish this, or would it be necessary to resort to hooking the Windows Firewall API? I would like to prevent these modifications from being made at all, rather than backing up the firewall rules before the installation and restoring them afterward. A TechNet article indicates that there is no way to prevent installers from accessing the Windows Firewall API, but that article pertains to the Windows XP version of Windows Firewall. The Windows 7 version of Windows Firewall is newer and much-improved over the Windows XP incarnation, so it is unclear whether that advice is still pertinent. A similar SuperUser question had received a couple of responses, but neither response answered the question, likely because they misunderstood that question due to the way it was worded. I hope that I have explained this problem clearly. Don't hesitate to ask if you need any clarification.

• CD and DVD burning very slow with LG DVD Burner

  I have an HP m7560in Desktop which came with an LG DVD burner. As far back as I can remember, it has been having problems in burning discs. It used to take about one and a half hour to burn 4 GB of data on a blank DVD-R. I am using Nero and ImgBurn and I usually select 8x speed for burning. I used to run XP earlier and now I run Windows 7 on it, but I face the problem on both. I have already checked that DMA mode is selected in the IDE controllers' properties. On XP, uninstalling the IDE controllers and DVD drive from the Device Manager, rebooting and letting it install the drivers again fixed the problem for a while, but after a couple reboots, the problem used to come back. On Windows 7, even doing that is not fixing the problem. In fact, in Windows 7, the burning process doesn't even begin. Imgburn gets stuck on the first stage (of writing Lead-In), and it never progresses until I turn off / reset the computer. I checked the disc info after this happened, and the disc still shows empty and ready to be burned on, so it's obvious that it didn't even touch the disc. I have already had the drive replaced once by HP, but it didn't fix the problem. Do you guys have any suggestions? (Note that Windows Updates doesn't give any newer driver for the controllers, or any other components for that matter).

  Hi, We have successfully implemented a Samba Primary Domain Controller for a hybrid Windows-Linux environment. So now I am setting up dual-boot clients with Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10. Windows XP can be easily added to the Samba Domain. Everything is manageable. No worries. But when I try using likewise-open 4.1 to add the Ubuntu 9.10 to the samba domain, it cannot locate the domain controller. domainjoin-cli --loglevel verbose join MYDOMAIN root Error: Unable to resolve DC name [code 0x00080026] Resolving 'MYDOMAIN' failed. Check that the domain name is correctly entered. Also check that your DNS server is reachable, and that your system is configured to use DNS in nsswitch. I even tried mydomain.com variations but to no avail. What am I missing ? I read up a document on MSDN wherein it says that the Domain Controller creates some SRV records in the DNS server. I guess, I don't have them on my BIND. Do you think that is the problem ? If yes, can anyone please point out how and what SRV records need to be added. Thanks.

• Folder Redirection Issues - Freezing, Strange Warnings

  I have Folder Redirection set up in a test environment for a couple accounts. I have followed the instructions for setting up the folder security settings here, and I can confirm that folders are created automatically by the system with the correct security settings when a user logs in. The GPO has been configured to automatically move user files up to the redirected folders, and this is working properly. Problems start occurring when a Windows 7 PC is in use. It is rare, but Explorer will lock up when performing a file write operation (move/copy/save from application). This results in the entire system being unusable, with only a hard reset resolving it (Task Manager doesn't start, the "three finger salute" does nothing, apps stop working). The mouse functions, but clicks do nothing. The other issue is that occasionally when copying/creating/modifying files a dialog box will pop up with the message "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from XYZ\cardenas to make changes to this folder." The folder that was created by copying an existing one has the correct security settings and lists me as the owner. My company will not be implementing Folder Redirection on XP, since we are making a "clean break" with implementing new technologies with the Windows 7 rollout, so this behavior has not been - nor will be - checked for in XP.
