• Deploying an EAR to JBOSS times out (org.rhq.core.pc.inventory.TimeoutException:)

  Hi, I am trying to deploy an ear file to JBOSS AS (defalut server). The application is the mavenised version of examples of SeamInAction book. When I copy the file to $JBOSS_HOME/server/default/deploy, I don't get any exception but the application doesn't respond, after some time trying to access the application from the browser gives following in the log... While deploying with admin-console (http://localhost:8080/admin-console) I get following error messgae: PS: After this Jboss gets into unusable state. I cannot even access admin-console. I just have to kill it. • Doctrine Build-All Task fails in NetBeans - Class not found! Fatal Error: call to evictAll()

  When I build my model with the symfony doctrine:build --all --and-load command I have made no major changes to the model/schema, this is something new. I also tried sub-commands like build-model, build-tables, but they all hang.. I'm trying this in net beans. Any clue what this is? • handle null values for string when implementing IXmlSerializable interface

  I have the following class that implements IXmlSerializable. When implementing WriteXml(), I need to handle the case where the string members of this class may be null values. What is the best way of handling this? Currently, I am using the default constructor in which all the string properties are initialized to empty string values. This way, when WriteXml() is called, the string will not be null. One other way I could do this is check using String.IsNullOrEmpty before writing each string in xml. • Why do I get the error "Only antlib URIs can be located from the URI alone,not the URI" when trying to run hibernate tools in my build.xml

  I'm trying to run hibernate tools in an ant build to generate ddl from my JPA annotations. Ant dies on the taskdef tag. I've tried with ant 1.7, 1.6.5, and 1.6 to no avail. I've tried both in eclipse and outside. I've tried including all the hbn jars in the hibernate-tools path and not. • SqlBulkCopy is slow, doesn't utilize full network speed

  Hi, for that past couple of weeks I have been creating generic script that is able to copy databases. The goal is to be able to specify any database on some server and copy it to some other location, and it should only copy the specified content. The exact content to be copied over is specified in a configuration file. This script is going to be used on some 10 different databases and run weekly. And in the end we are copying only about 3%-20% of databases which are as large as 500GB. I have been using the SMO assemblies to achieve this. This is my first time working with SMO and it took a while to create generic way to copy the schema objects, filegroups ...etc. (Actually helped find some bad stored procs). Overall I have a working script which is lacking on performance (and at times times out) and was hoping you guys would be able to help. When executing the WriteToServer command to copy large amount of data ( 6GB) it reaches my timeout period of 1hr. Here is the core code for copying table data. The script is written in PowerShell. $query = ("SELECT * FROM $selectedTable " + $global:selectiveTables.Get_Item($selectedTable)).Trim() Write-LogOutput "Copying $selectedTable : '$query'" $cmd = New-Object Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand -argumentList $query, $source $cmd.CommandTimeout = 120; $bulkData = ([Data.SqlClient.SqlBulkCopy]$destination) $bulkData.DestinationTableName = $selectedTable; $bulkData.BulkCopyTimeout = $global:tableCopyDataTimeout # = 3600 $reader = $cmd.ExecuteReader(); $bulkData.WriteToServer($reader); # Takes forever here on large tables The source and target databases are located on different servers so I kept track of the network speed as well. The network utilization never went over 1% which was quite surprising to me. But when I just transfer some large files between the servers, the network utilization spikes up to 10%. I have tried setting the $bulkData.BatchSize to 5000 but nothing really changed. Increasing the BulkCopyTimeout to an even greater amount would only solve the timeout. I really would like to know why the network is not being used fully. Anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions on networking or bulk copy will be appreciated. And please let me know if you need more information. Thanks. UPDATE I have tweaked several options that increase the performance of SqlBulkCopy, such as setting the transaction logging to simple and providing a table lock to SqlBulkCopy instead of the default row lock. Also some tables are better optimized for certain batch sizes. Overall, the duration of the copy was decreased by some 15%. And what we will do is execute the copy of each database simultaneously on different servers. But I am still having a timeout issue when copying one of the databases. When copying one of the larger databases, there is a table for which I consistently get the following exception: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. It is thrown about 16 after it starts copying the table which is no where near my BulkCopyTimeout. Even though I get the exception that table is fully copied in the end. Also, if I truncate that table and restart my process for that table only, the tables is copied over without any issues. But going through the process of copying that entire database fails always for that one table. I have tried executing the entire process and reseting the connection before copying that faulty table, but it still errored out. My SqlBulkCopy and Reader are closed after each table. Any suggestions as to what else could be causing the script to fail at the point each time?

I already added the Core Data Framework to the target (right click on my project under "Targets", "Add" - "Existing Frameworks", "CoreData.framework"). I have a SQL Server 2008 database with ASP.NET Forms Authentication, profiles and roles created and is functional on the development workstation. I can login using the created users without problem. I back up the database on the development computer and restore it on the production server. I xcopy the DLLs and ASP.NET files to the server. I make the necessary changes in the web.config, changing the SQL connection strings to point to the production server database and upload it. I've made sure to generate a machine key and it is the same on both the development web.config and the production web.config. And yet, when I try to login on the production server, the same user that I'm able to login successfully with on the development computer, fails on the production server. There is other content in the database, the schema generated by FluentNHibernate. This content is able to be queried successfully on both development and production servers. This is mind boggling, I believe I've verified everything, but obviously it is still not working and I must have missed something. Please, any ideas? Answer: I ran into a problem with similar symptoms at one point by forgetting to set the applicationName attribute in the web.config under the membership providers element. Users are associated to a specific application. Since I didn't set the applicationName, it defaulted to the application path (something like "/MyApplication"). When it was moved to production, the path changed (for example to "/WebSiteFolder/SomeSubFolder /MyApplication"), so the application name defaulted to the new production path and an association could not be made to the original user accounts that were set up in development. Could your issues possibly be the same as mine? I have this already in my web.config but still get the issue. • The HTML5 doctype is not triggering standards mode in IE8

  i work for a company where all our sites currently use the XHTML 1.0 transitional doctype (yes i know it is very old school). I want to change them all to use the HTML5 doctype seeing as it is backwards compatible. One of the reasons why i want to make the switch is because in IE8 if someone has the developer tools installed then the old XHTML doctype switches the browser into compatibility mode and renders the page as IE7. From reading up on it i was led to believe that the HTML5 doctype will set any page to render in standards mode, but this is not happening when i test it on our staging server it still flips into IE7 rendering mode. The weird thing is if i save the page with HTML5 doctype locally and open it, it is rendering in IE8 standards mode. There must be something else causing it to drop into compatibility IE7 rendering. Any ideas what this could be? • Strategy and AI for the game 'Proximity'

  'Proximity' is a strategy game of territorial domination similar to Othello, Go and Risk. Two players, uses a 10x12 hex grid. Game invented by Brian Cable in 2007. Seems to be a worthy game for discussing a) optimal strategy then b) how to build an AI Strategies are going to be probabilistic or heuristic-based, due to the randomness factor, and the high branching factor (starts out at 120). So it will be kind of hard to compare objectively. A compute time limit of 5s per turn seems reasonable. Game: Flash version here and many copies elsewhere on the web Rules: here Object: to have control of the most armies after all tiles have been placed. Each turn you received a randomly numbered tile (value between 1 and 20 armies) to place on any vacant board space. If this tile is adjacent to any ally tiles, it will strengthen each tile's defenses +1 (up to a max value of 20). If it is adjacent to any enemy tiles, it will take control over them if its number is higher than the number on the enemy tile. Thoughts on strategy: Here are some initial thoughts; setting the computer AI to Expert will probably teach a lot: minimizing your perimeter seems to be a good strategy, to prevent flips and minimize worst-case damage like in Go, leaving holes inside your formation is lethal, only more so with the hex grid because you can lose armies on up to 6 squares in one move low-numbered tiles are a liability, so place them away from your main territory, near the board edges and scattered. You can also use low-numbered tiles to plug holes in your formation, or make small gains along the perimeter which the opponent will not tend to bother attacking. a triangle formation of three pieces is strong since they mutually reinforce, and also reduce the perimeter Each tile can be flipped at most 6 times, i.e. when its neighbor tiles are occupied. Control of a formation can flow back and forth. Sometimes you lose part of a formation and plug any holes to render that part of the board 'dead' and lock in your territory/ prevent further losses. Low-numbered tiles are obvious-but-low-valued liabilities, but high-numbered tiles can be bigger liabilities if they get flipped (which is harder). One lucky play with a 20-army tile can cause a swing of 200 (from +100 to -100 armies). So tile placement will have both offensive and defensive considerations. Comment 1,2,4 seem to resemble a minimax strategy where we minimize the maximum expected possible loss (modified by some probabilistic consideration of the value ß the opponent can get from 1..20 i.e. a structure which can only be flipped by a ß=20 tile is 'nearly impregnable'.) I'm not clear what the implications of comments 3,5,6 are for optimal strategy. Interested in comments from Go, Chess or Othello players. (The sequel ProximityHD for XBox Live, allows 4-player -cooperative or -competitive local multiplayer increases the branching factor since you now have 5 tiles in your hand at any given time, of which you can only play one. Reinforcement of ally tiles is increased to +2 per ally.)

• MySQL Query GROUP_CONCAT Over Multiple Rows

  I'm getting name and address data out of generic question / answer data to create some kind of normalised reporting database. The query I've got uses group_concat and works for individual sets of questions but not for multiple sets. I've tried to simplify what I'm doing by using just forename and surname and just 3 records, 2 for 1 person and 1 for another. In reality though there are more than 300,000 records. Example of results with qs.Id = 1. QuestionSetId Forename Surname ------------------------------------------------------- 1 Bob Jones Example of results with qs.Id IN (1, 2, 3). QuestionSetId Forename Surname ------------------------------------------------------- 3 Bob,Bob,Frank Jones,Jones,Smith What I would like to see for qs.Id IN (1, 2, 3). QuestionSetId Forename Surname ------------------------------------------------------- 1 Bob Jones 2 Bob Jones 3 Frank Smith So how can I make the 2nd example return a separate row for each set of name and address information? I realise the current way the data is stored is "questionable" but I cannot change the way the data is stored. I can get sets of individual answers but not sure how to combine the others. • Any tool to make git build every commit to a branch in a seperate repository?

  A git tool that meets the specs below is needed. Does one already exists? If not, I will create a script and make it available on GitHub for others to use or contribute. Is there a completely different and better way to solve the need to build/test every commit to a branch in a git repository? Not just to the latest but each one back to a certain staring point. Background: Our development environment uses a separate continuous integration server which is wonderful. However, it is still necessary to do full builds locally on each developer's PC to make sure the commit won't "break the build" when pushed to the CI server. Unfortunately, with auto unit tests, those build force the developer to wait 10 or 15 minutes for a build every time. To solve this we have setup a "mirror" git repository on each developer PC. So we develop in the main repository but anytime a local full build is needed. We run a couple commands in a in the mirror repository to fetch, checkout the commit we want to build, and build. It's works extremely lovely so we can continue working in the main one with the build going in parallel. There's only one main concern now. We want to make sure every single commit builds and tests fine. But we often get busy and neglect to build several fresh commits. Then if it the build fails you have to do a bisect or manually figure build each interim commit to figure out which one broke. Requirements for this tool. The tool will look at another repo, origin by default, fetch and compare all commits that are in branches to 2 lists of commits. One list must hold successfully built commits and the other lists commits that failed. It identifies any commit or commits not yet in either list and begins to build them in a loop in the order that they were committed. It stops on the first one that fails. The tool appropriately adds each commit to either the successful or failed list after it as attempted to build each one. The tool will ignore any "legacy" commits which are prior to the oldest commit in the success list. This logic makes the starting point possible in the next point. Starting Point. The tool building a specific commit so that, if successful it gets added to the success list. If it is the earliest commit in the success list, it becomes the "starting point" so that none of the commits prior to that are examined for builds. Only linear tree support? Much like bisect, this tool works best on a commit tree which is, at least from it's starting point, linear without any merges. That is, it should be a tree which was built and updated entirely via rebase and fast forward commits. If it fails on one commit in a branch it will stop without building the rest that followed after that one. Instead if will just move on to another branch, if any. The tool must do these steps once by default but allow a parameter to loop with an option to set how many seconds between loops. Other tools like Hudson or CruiseControl could do more fancy scheduling options. The tool must have good defaults but allow optional control. Which repo? origin by default. Which branches? all of them by default. What tool? by default an executable file to be provided by the user named "buildtest", "buildtest.sh" "buildtest.cmd", or buildtest.exe" in the root folder of the repository. Loop delay? run once by default with option to loop after a number of seconds between iterations.

  I am trying to deploy my first rails app to Heroku and seem to be having a problem. After git push heroku master I get an error saying that relation "tags does not exist. I understand that without knowledge of my application it will be hard to help but I am wondering if someone can point me in the right direction. • web grid server pagination trigger multiple controller call when changing page

  When I server-filter on "au" my web grid and change page, multiple call to the controller are done : the first with 0 filtering, the second with "a" filtering, the third with "au" filtering. My table load huge data so the first call is longer than others. I see the grid displaying firstly the third call result, then the second, and finally the first call (this order correspond to the response time of my controller due to filter parameter) Why are all that controller call made ? Can't just my controller be called once with my total filter "au" ? What should I do ? Hi, In the project we need to develope a mail system. This must do common work with the webservice. We create a Bean who recieves an auto-generated class from non-root xsd element (not wsdl); this bean do this common work. The mail system recieves a xml with elements defined in xsd file and we need to drop this elements info to wsdlc generated classes. With this objects we can use this common bean. Is not possible to redirect the mail request to the webservice. We've looking for the code to do this with WL9.2 resources but we don't found anything. At the moment we've tried to use JAXB for this unmarshalling: JAXBContext c = JAXBContext.newInstance(new Class[]{WasteDCSType.class}); Unmarshaller u = c.createUnmarshaller(); WasteDCSType w = u.unmarshal(waste, WasteDCSType.class).getValue(); waste variable is an DOM Element object. It isn't the root element 'cause the root isn't included in XSD First we needed to add no-arg constructor in some autogenerated classes. No problem, we solved this and finally we unmarshalled the xml without error Exceptions. But we had problems with the attributes. The unmarshalling didn't set attributes; none of them in any class, not simple attributes, not large or short enumeration attributes. No problem with xml elements of any type. We can't create the unmarshaller from "context string" (the package name) 'cause not ObjectFactory has been create by wsldc. If we set the schema no element descriptions are founded and unmarshall crashes. • How Do I Bind a "selected Item" in a Listbox to a ItemsControl in WPF?

  LowDown: I am trying to create a Document Viewer in WPF. It will allow the user to preview selected documents and if they want, compare the documents in WPF. So they can view them side by side. The layout is this: Left side is a full list box. On the right side is a Collection or an Items control. Inside the items control will be a collection of the "selected documents" in the list box. So A user can select multiple items in the list box and for each new item they select, they can add the item to the collection on the right. I want the collection to look like a image gallery that shows up in Google/Bing Image searches. Make sense? The problem I am having is I can't get the WPFPreviewer to bind correctly to the selected item in the list box under the itemscontrol. Side Note: The WPFPreviewer is something Micorosft puts out that allows us to preview documents. Other previewers can be built for all types of documents, but im going basic here until I get this working right. • Is possible to make mt.exe embed manifest files correctly in Visual Studio 2008?

  I found that mt.exe fails to correctly create and embed manifest files into executables when run inside a VCPROJ. For example the same executable load well on Windows 7 but failed to load on Windows XP. The manifest was embedded and correct. After I spend lots of hours searching for possible reasons and solution I modified the project settings to generate the manifest outside the exe file. Now it works on both systems. • How to do inclusive range queries when only half-open range is supported (ala SortedMap.subMap)

  On SortedMap.subMap This is the API for SortedMap<K,V>.subMap: SortedMap<K,V> subMap(K fromKey, K toKey) : Returns a view of the portion of this map whose keys range from fromKey, inclusive, to toKey, exclusive. This inclusive lower bound, exclusive upper bound combo ("half-open range") is something that is prevalent in Java, and while it does have its benefits, it also has its quirks, as we shall soon see. The following snippet illustrates a simple usage of subMap: static <K,V> SortedMap<K,V> someSortOfSortedMap() { return Collections.synchronizedSortedMap(new TreeMap<K,V>()); } //... Or some unknown type that may not even be Comparable<?>? So the question is: is it possible to write a general subMapInclusive method that takes a SortedMap<K,V>, and K fromKey, K toKey, and perform an inclusive-range subMap queries? Related questions Are upper bounds of indexed ranges always assumed to be exclusive? Is it possible to write a generic +1 method for numeric box types in Java? On NavigableMap It should be mentioned that there's a NavigableMap.subMap overload that takes two additional boolean variables to signify whether the bounds are inclusive or exclusive. Had this been made available in SortedMap, then none of the above would've even been asked. So working with a NavigableMap<K,V> for inclusive range queries would've been ideal, but while Collections provides utility methods for SortedMap (among other things), we aren't afforded the same luxury with NavigableMap. • Find optimal strategy and AI for the game 'Proximity'?

  'Proximity' is a strategy game of territorial domination similar to Othello, Go and Risk. Two players, uses a 10x12 hex grid. Game invented by Brian Cable in 2007. Seems to be a worthy game for discussing a) optimal algorithm then b) how to build an AI. Strategies are going to be probabilistic or heuristic-based, due to the randomness factor, and the insane branching factor (20^120). So it will be kind of hard to compare objectively. A compute time limit of 5s per turn seems reasonable. Game: Flash version here and many copies elsewhere on the web Rules: here Object: to have control of the most armies after all tiles have been placed. Each turn you received a randomly numbered tile (value between 1 and 20 armies) to place on any vacant board space. If this tile is adjacent to any ally tiles, it will strengthen each tile's defenses +1 (up to a max value of 20). If it is adjacent to any enemy tiles, it will take control over them if its number is higher than the number on the enemy tile. Thoughts on strategy: Here are some initial thoughts; setting the computer AI to Expert will probably teach a lot: minimizing your perimeter seems to be a good strategy, to prevent flips and minimize worst-case damage like in Go, leaving holes inside your formation is lethal, only more so with the hex grid because you can lose armies on up to 6 squares in one move low-numbered tiles are a liability, so place them away from your main territory, near the board edges and scattered. You can also use low-numbered tiles to plug holes in your formation, or make small gains along the perimeter which the opponent will not tend to bother attacking. a triangle formation of three pieces is strong since they mutually reinforce, and also reduce the perimeter Each tile can be flipped at most 6 times, i.e. when its neighbor tiles are occupied. Control of a formation can flow back and forth. Sometimes you lose part of a formation and plug any holes to render that part of the board 'dead' and lock in your territory/ prevent further losses. Low-numbered tiles are obvious-but-low-valued liabilities, but high-numbered tiles can be bigger liabilities if they get flipped (which is harder). One lucky play with a 20-army tile can cause a swing of 200 (from +100 to -100 armies). So tile placement will have both offensive and defensive considerations. Comment 1,2,4 seem to resemble a minimax strategy where we minimize the maximum expected possible loss (modified by some probabilistic consideration of the value ß the opponent can get from 1..20 i.e. a structure which can only be flipped by a ß=20 tile is 'nearly impregnable'.) I'm not clear what the implications of comments 3,5,6 are for optimal strategy. Interested in comments from Go, Chess or Othello players. (The sequel ProximityHD for XBox Live, allows 4-player -cooperative or -competitive local multiplayer increases the branching factor since you now have 5 tiles in your hand at any given time, of which you can only play one. Reinforcement of ally tiles is increased to +2 per ally.)

• Opening an SQL CE file at runtime with Entity Framework 4

  I am getting started with Entity Framework 4, and I an creating a demo app as a learning exercise. The app is a simple documentation builder, and it uses a SQL CE store. Each documentation project has its own SQL CE data file, and the user opens one of these files to work on a project. The EDM is very simple. A documentation project is comprised of a list of subjects, each of which has a title, a description, and zero or more notes. So, my entities are Subject, which contains Title and Text properties, and Note, which has Title and Text properties. There is a one-to-many association from Subject to Note. I am trying to figure out how to open an SQL CE data file. A data file must match the schema of the SQL CE database created by EF4's Create Database Wizard, and I will implement a New File use case elsewhere in the app to implement that requirement. Right now, I am just trying to get an existing data file open in the app. I have reproduced my existing 'Open File' code below. I have set it up as a static service class called File Services. The code isn't working quite yet, but there is enough to show what I am trying to do. I am trying to hold the ObjectContext open for entity object updates, disposing it when the file is closed. So, here is my question: Am I on the right track? What do I need to change to make this code work with EF4? Is there an example of how to do this properly? Thanks for your help.
