• Can I recover a lost text file in Windows 7?

  How can I recover a lost text file in Windows 7?? It has very important information in it and of course, it is gone because of the stupid Windows Update thing....it just automatically closed all of my stuff and restarted my computer!! Would the text file possibly be in the Temp folder in my computer?? I don't know much about this stuff...but I need it. I didn't save the file which makes me think I can never get it back...but I want to make sure. Thanks. I was using notepad.

• Foremost custom file type not accepted by -t argument

  I'm trying to recover a deleted file on an ext3 file system using the foremost utility. The file I want to recover is a hpp C++ source code file. However, foremost does not automatically support the hpp file extension, so I have to add it to the config file. So, following the instructions on the man page, I add the following line to the config file: hpp n 50000 include include ASCII Then I run foremost as follows: $foremost -v -T -t hpp -i /dev/md0 -o /home/recover/ Instead of doing anything, it just displays the help message. If I change the hpp to htm or jpg, it works. So apparently foremost isn't accepting the custom file type I added into the config file. But I've looked over this dozens of times now, and I can't see what I'm doing wrong. I'm following the instructions exactly. Why doesn't foremost recognize the new file type I added to the config file?

• ownership of hard drive recoveery of files Windows 7

  Here is the issue. I have an old laptop that died that was running xp. I now have a win 7 laptop. I need to get the files off the old drive. Win 7 will not let me take ownership of the drive. I can runn the comand prompt in regular mode and do a dir on the drive that shows up as Q: drive in regular mode. I gives me the volume as c and the serial number. I can not take ownership in regular mode with the comand prompt or other means. Microsoft site says use safe mode with networking. So I go to safe mode the drive shows up as G: in safe mode. I use the comand prompt Takeown /f G: and get the device is not ready error. I am at a loss. All I want is to retrieve my files from this drive. Any ideas or sugestions. I don't see how you can dir and get some info in one mode and not acces it in another. I have to get ownership and permissions fixed to get in the drive to get my files. Thanks in advance. I might add that I am using a usb3.0 to ide/sata cable adapter. Software came with the device but I can't make heads or tails out of the manual to know if any of the software can help me. The soft ware is PCClone Ex lite, and Clone Drive Soft ware

  Hello, I would like to know what kind of electrical signals does a cpu send to a dynamic RAM when it wants to write one bit (a 1 or 0). Is it simply that cpu sends just a single electric pulse, and if that electric pulse's voltage is higher than a certain level, it charges the capacitor to a voltage level that is "1" and if it is at a lower voltage band, it charges capacitor to level that it is "0"?

• Program to set time on local computer using GPS data

  I have a laptop running Windows XP that does not connect to the Internet and I would like to use a USB GPS receiver as a time source to set the clock. Generally, the laptop will not have access to the open sky so getting a strong, multi-satellite connection is not likely. Ideally, I would like to be able to have the program detect the GPS receiver and set the clock without intervention from the user. Is what I'm seeking even feasible?

• Recovering corrupted VB.NET Form file?

  Good day. This question is directly related to this one I made here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4911099/there-is-no-editor-available-for-form1-vb-error There, I was working on my VB.NET 2010 Express application, I saved, then a blackout came and now, apparently, I can't view the designer nor code of my Form file (Form1.vb). On StackOverflow, I was recommended to check for the From1.vb file, and try to open it on Notepad. If nothing appeared, it would mean that my file was corrupted. I open it on Notepad, and I get a blank file. It is 27kb, but it only has blank spaces. So I assume it is corrupted. I was told this place was better for dealing with corrupted files, about techniques to recover them. I use Windows7, VB.NET 2010 Express. I run Windows7 on Parallels Desktop, Mac OS X. However, I do not believe that is the problem, most likely it was that damned blackout... this is the first time that happens to me. VB.NET worked just fine for me all time (about a month and half). • Why some recovery tools are still able to find deleted files after I purge Recycle Bin, defrag the disk and zero-fill free space?

  As far as I understand, when I delete (without using Recycle Bin) a file, its record is removed from the file system table of contents (FAT/MFT/etc...) but the values of the disk sectors which were occupied by the file remain intact until these sectors are reused to write something else. When I use some sort of erased files recovery tool, it reads those sectors directly and tries to build up the original file. In this case, what I can't understand is why recovery tools are still able to find deleted files (with reduced chance of rebuilding them though) after I defragment the drive and overwrite all the free space with zeros. Can you explain this? I thought zero-overwritten deleted files can be only found by means of some special forensic lab magnetic scan hardware and those complex wiping algorithms (overwriting free space multiple times with random and non-random patterns) only make sense to prevent such a physical scan to succeed, but practically it seems that plain zero-fill is not enough to wipe all the tracks of deleted files. How can this be?

• Infected Win XP disk not openable on a Vista computer

  How can I read a WinXP partioned disk that is infected and shows up on a USB connection to Win Vista computer as a single partition that Vista cannot see the contents? The XP computer HDD is partioned into 4 partitions. It became infected, and all attempts to clean it have failed. Applications begin to launch, but are then shut down by the infecting agent. Using a major Anti-virus Co. boot disk (which was unable to connect to the Web, probably because the infecting agent stopped it) with virus definitions dated after the disk became infected, the resultant scan showed no infection. I bought a USB cable to connect the IDE drive to my Vista computer, but when I open Win Explorer, it sees the disk, but does not show any contents. It indicates it is a single partition that is valid. However in all the ways I have tried it does not show drive contents. Any suggestions on what to do next?

  I have a Google Drive spreadsheet with a single column that holds string values (Twitter screen names) such as "user1", "user1", "UserX", and I would like to count those values so that I can easily craft a bar chart out of it. So the result should be value occurrence ----------------------- user1 2 UserX 1 ... .... Please note, I only want to look for whole words, and not part words.   I have a energy spreadsheet for multiple sites. the first row has month and year. the next row has columns for date invoice received, KW hours and cost. So there are three columns for each month. I have merged the month cell across the three columns. When i create a pivot table the date kw/h and costs are labled date1, date2, etc. Can I link the months headings to the subheadings to get meaningful headings in the pivot table????

• I just deleted "/bin". What's the best way to recover?

  I just ran (not on purpose!) rm -rf /bin. I've booted down the computer and am using Finnix to try to recover from it. I have succeeded in mounting the drive, and confirmed that, yes, the entire /bin folder is deleted. Is it possible to recover from this without reinstalling the OS? I'm thinking that I could setup a VM with the same OS and architecture (Ubuntu Server 11.10 alpha release, x86) and install all the packages I had installed on the server, then just copy the /bin folder. Will this work? Am I better off just starting over?

This is working great, however it would be ideal if in the message body, the Event contents could be placed. I have tried using $eventdescription and %eventdescription%, but those are just shots in the dark. Any amount of googling produces no results. Does anyone know if this is possible? Update: Sparks' suggestion below is a step in the right direction I believe, however that method doesn't seem to work for all values. For example, I can pull the RecordID, Severity and Channel as shown, but I can't use the same method to retreive the EventID, or most importantly the description. • Large scale file replication with an option to "unsubscribe" from a replicated file on a given machine

  I have a 100+ GB files per day incoming on one machine. (File size is arbitrary and can be adjusted as needed.) I have several other machines that do some work on these files. I need to reliably deliver each incoming file to the worker machines. A worker machine should be able to free its HDD from a file once it is done working with it. It is preferable that a file would be uploaded to the worker only once and then processed in place, and then deleted, without copying somewhere else — to minimize already high HDD load. (Worker itself requires quite a bit of bandwidth.) Please advise a solution that is not based on Java. None of existing replication solutions that I've seen can do the "free HDD from the file once processed" stuff — but maybe I'm missing something... A preferable solution should work with files (from the POV of our business logic code), not require the business logic to connect to some queue or other. (Internally the solution may use whatever technology it needs to — except Java.)

  I need to recover some mails from a backed up OST file. Unfortunately, I deleted the corresponding IMAP mail account from Outlook. When I recreate the mail account and replace the created OST file with my backup I get the following error message: The file {path}.ost cannot be accessed because it has been configured for use with a different mailbox. How to solve this problem? Please don't suggest a OST to PST tool unless you know it works. I tried numerous of those tools from dubious looking websites and none worked. Please note: I am using Outlook 2013 Preview.

• MS Access ADP front end and SQL Server back end for field data collection?

  I am an anthropologist. I am going to the field and will use a netbook to collect survey data. The survey forms will need to allow me to enter data into multiple tables, search tables, allow subforms, and be fast enough to not slow down my interview. I have considered storing the data in a SQL Server Express 2008 R2 server (there will be a lot of data) while using a Microsoft Access data project as a front end. To cut down the number of steps required to collect and store data, I'm considering using the netbook for both data storage and collection (after reading this article about SQL Server on a netbook). My questions are: (1) Is there a simpler solution that is also gratis (gratis because I already have a MS Access license from my workplace, and SQL Server Express is, obviously, free)? (2) Does my idea to store and collect data using the netbook make sense? Thank you.

• In BASH, are wildcard expansions guaranteed to be in order?

  Is the expansion of a wildcard in BASH guaranteed to be in alphabetical order? I forced to split a large file into [10Mb pieces][1] so that they can be be accepted by my Mercurial repository. So I was thinking I could use: split -b 10485760 Big.file BigFilePiece. and then in place of: cat BigFile | bigFileProcessor I could do: cat BigFilePiece.* | bigFileProcessor In its place. However, I could not find anywhere that guaranteed that the expansion of the asterisk (aka wildcard, aka '*' ) would always be in alphabetical order so that .aa came before .ab ( as opposed to be timestamp ordering or something like that ). Also, are there any flaws in my plan? How great is the performance cost of cating the file together?
