• How do I prevent lighttpd from caching static files, even when modified on disk?

  I am using lighttpd to serve static files. I have a bunch of images in a dir that I regularly update. This will change the file content (and filesize) as well as the modification date, but not their filename. When I access the files through http, the updates are not taken into account and lighty serves the old file. I can manually rename the file to something different, then lighttpd will return a 404 error, and if I rename my file back, I will get the correct updated version. Seems like lightty is using some kind of cache mechanism of its own (which is fine) to return static files. Unfortunatly, it seems that this mechanism doesn't update itself when files are modified. I checked through Wireshark, and my browser is really doing a request to the file, this is not a browser caching issue. It returns a 200 OK when requesting it from an empty cache, and a 304 Not Modified otherwise, as expected. But the file is returned with a wrong Last-Modified header that do not reflect the real last modification date. Maybe there is some config directive that I am not aware of ? I would like the files returned by lighty to reflect the changes made on disk directly, or at least being able to invalidate its cache.

• How can I get DVDs playing after a Vista to XP change? [closed]

  I replaced my vista install on a Dell Inspiron 1525 with XP and have managed to get most things up and running again however I'm having trouble with playing DVDs. When I try and play a DVD I get the following message: Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card. I have ensured that my drive is configured to play Region 2 discs (I'm in the UK), I've installed the most up to date XP codec pack which makes me think it's a driver issue. In device manager I have got my DVD drivers up to date however under "Other Devices" I'm missing several which sound key: Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus Video Controller Video Controller (VGA Compatible) However I've installed all the relevant drivers I can find on the Dell website. The drive itself is working - I've run software from the drive. I'm afraid I am far from a sys-admin so I'm struggling on this one. How can I get my DVDs playing again?

• Mac OS X - Time Machine backup fails verification - What can I do to save the history?

  Hi, How do I make Time Machine to make a new complete backup without losing older versions of backed up files? Verbose: I am using the Time Machine backup on my OS X (Snow Leopard) to backup the whole computer to an external drive. I especially like the "history", i.e. the feature that allows you to restore the older version of a file. Problem: I had some data corruption on my external backup drive, I repaired it with the System Tool for doing that, it found some faults. I had the disk tool repair the external drive. After that, the external drive was OK and I could use Time Machine again. I let Time Machine do one more backup. Now I made a verification according to http://superuser.com/questions/47628/verifying-time-machine-backups, namely along sudo diff -qr . $HOME/Desktop 2>&1 | tee $HOME/timemachine-diff.log However: After doing the command above, several differences and missing files were reported, approx. 200 files in sum. Whereas some of the missing files were cache or excluded directories, the differences do bother me, especially as some important documents from me are listed as differing. How can I make sure that the data on the external drive is synced correctly? Is it possible to have Time Machine to do a complete new backup without losing the history? Or to have Time Machine compare all files for differences and re-write all files that are different? Or can I set some flags on the files that do not match to have them copied again? (like the archive-flag in Windows/Dos). I'd rather not touch the files because I would like to keep the date of last change/date of creation) Thank you for your thoughts!

• Display on secondary video card (Nvidia 8400 GS): horrible refresh, bogs system

  This is my work computer, but it's a small shop. We do business software development. The most hardcore thing we create is some web animations with html5 and fancy javascript/css. The base machine is a Dell Precision T3500 - Xeon W3550 (3.07GHz quad), 6GB ram, pair of 500GB harddrives, and Win 7 x64 Enterprise SP1. My primary video card is an ATI FirePro V4800 1GB in a PCIe slot of some speed driving a pair of 23s at 1920x1080 through DisplayPort-HDMI adapters. The secondary card is an NVidia GeForce 8400GS in a PCI slot driving a single 17" at 1280x1024 through DVI. On either of the 23" monitors, windows move smoothly, scroll quickly, and are generally very responsive. On the 17", it's slow, chunky, and when I'm trying to scroll a ton of content, Windows will occasionally suggest I drop to the Windows Basic theme. I've updated drivers for both cards, and I've gotten every Windows update relating to video. Specifically: ATI FirePro Provider: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc Date: 6/22/2014 Version: 13.352.1014.0 NVidia 8400 GS Provider: NVIDIA Date: 7/2/2014 Version: 9.18.13.4052 Unfortunately, new hardware isn't really an option. Is there anything I can do software-wise to speed up the NVidia-driven monitor?

• WMI Remote Process Starting

  Scenario I've written a WMI Wrapper that seems to be quite sufficient, however whenever I run the code to start a remote process on a server, I see the process name appear in the task manager but the process itself does not start like it should (as in, I don't see the command line log window of the process that prints out what it's doing etc.) The process I am trying to start is just a C# application executable that I have written.   Here is the code for my simple parsing application. I am getting an error that states 'No mapping exists from type System.Text.RegularExpressions.Match to a known managed provider native type'.   I have a custom EntityHome class. I wire the dependent entity in the wire method, but when I call the action (persist) the wired component is always null. What could be the reason, similar code generated by seam gen is apparently working. Here is the entity class.   I have a List which is straight forward representation of a database table. I am trying to sort and apply some magic after the data is loaded into List of HashMaps. In my case this is the only hard and fast way of doing it becoz I have a rules engine that actually updates the values in the HashMap after several computations. Meaning, if you consider the last two rows they have same actionId = 1234 and same eventId = 11. Now we can to pick the least fromDate from those 2 records which is Wed Mar 17 10:54:12 and farther toDate which is Wed Mar 31 10:54:12 and update those 2 record's fromDate and toDate to Wed Mar 17 10:54:12 and Wed Mar 31 10:54:12 respectively. And as a read/write test, to me it looks a bit pointless to read the same integer over and over (if I understand well what's going on in the Stream Read/Write) Wouldn't it be better to read int's from the previously written file and just read and write ints on the same place? Is there a better way to illustrate it? I've been breaking my head about a lot of these things for a while and I just can't get the whole picture..

• SQL error - Cannot convert nvarchar to decimal

  I have a C# application that simply parses all of the txt documents within a given network directory and imports the data to a SQL server db. Everything was cruising along just fine until about the 1800th file when it happend to have a few blanks in columns that are called out as DBType.Decimal (and the value is usually zero in the files, not blank). So I got this error, "cannot convert nvarchar to decimal". I am wondering how I could tell the app to simply skip the lines that have this issue?? Perhaps I could even just change the column type to varchar even tho values are numbers (what problems could this create?) There are a variety of tools available to help you and Support diagnose SOA Suite issues in 11g but it can be confusing as to which tool is appropriate for a particular situation and what their relationships are. This blog post will introduce the various tools and attempt to clarify what each is for and how they are related. Let's first list the tools we'll be addressing: RDA: Remote Diagnostic Agent DFW: Diagnostic Framework Selective Tracing DMS: Dynamic Monitoring Service ODL: Oracle Diagnostic Logging ADR: Automatic Diagnostics Repository ADRCI: Automatic Diagnostics Repository Command Interpreter WLDF: WebLogic Diagnostic Framework This overview is not mean to be a comprehensive guide on using all of these tools, however, extensive reference materials are included that will provide many more details on their execution. Another point to note is that all of these tools are applicable for Fusion Middleware as a whole but specific products may or may not have implemented features to leverage them. A couple of the tools have a WebLogic Scripting Tool or 'WLST' interface. WLST is a command interface for executing pre-built functions and custom scripts against a domain. • Adobe Illustrator can't open SVG file

  I have a generated SVG file which for some reason won't open in Adobe Illustrator when I serve the file content from my ASP.net application, but if I were to write this generated file directly to the file system from my ASP.net application, the file opens fine! I've put a zip of the two files here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1761973/Files.zip The zip has two files: Map.svg Test.svg Map.svg doesn't open in Illustrator, it shows up a Text Import Options dialog, and upon clicking OK, will show the XML content of the file. Test.svg opens fine in Illustrator. Doing a comparison of the two files yields NO DIFFERENCES whatsoever! There must be something different in these two files (caused by downloading the generated SVG from the web browser), but I have no idea what?

• Play Halo on the Xbox360 Arcade

  I'm looking at purchasing a Xbox360 because I've wanted to catch up with the Halo trilogy. Does the cheap Arcade edition console support Halo 2 Halo 3? Halo Wars? Would I be able to save my game progress in single player? Would I be able to play online in typical maps? General questions: Would I be able to play games using the DVD drive or do I have to download everything? Does the tiny HDD hurt even if I don't download any games, trailers or music? Are there any other differences in comparison to the Xbox360 Pro? I have a regular TV that uses the composite cable, so I don't need the HDTV support in the Pro edition.

• Opinions on NTFS for Mac solution?

  I am currently using the free NTFS-3G to access my NTFS drive from the Mac. It seems pretty stable (except once in the very beginning, it locked up the Mac and corrupted my NTFS drive, which I then fixed with chkdsk from a PC). However, speed is NOT one of its virtues. In fact, it's painfully slow I've been looking at buying Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X 8.0. Their product comparison PDF claims nearly double the speed (vs NTFS-3G) in almost every category (read, write, etc...). In addition, there is now an unsupported native solution with the snow leopard. Can folks here share their experiences. Is the native solution stable enough to be used for daily work? Should I just go with Paragon?

• Slow network file access with VMWare Server and Windows 7

  I have Windows 7 32-bit virtual machine running in a VMWare Server virtual machine. The host is Windows 7 64-bit. When I copy files between them it is extremely slow - it will take several minutes to copy even a 1 MB file. I can upload the file to an website and then download it again almost instantaneously by comparison. Browsing the network is quite zippy and has no problems. I have been unable to set up a HomeGroup between the computers though - the guest always times out without managing to get setup. Any ideas on how I should go about tracking down where the problem is?

• Reverse DNS does not match SMTP banner vs Reverse DNS mismatch

  I have to make decision whether my Reverse DNS should match SMTP banner but Reverse DNS to DNS and vice versa stays different or vice versa. Which one to choose? I have an 2x Exchange 2010 server with one SMTP Sender with TMG 2010. TMG has 2 links connected so that we have 2 separate internet providers. The problem is I have no way to control TMG behavior on which link is used to send emails as it picks it randomly. I have 2 MX records: - mail.test.com which resolves to IP and IP resolves to mail.test.com - mail2.test.com which resolves to IP2 and IP2 resolves to mail.test.com This was done to prevent smtp banner issues but it provides problems with Reverse DNS if the server on the other side is eager enough to do comparison. But I've checked with Google and they also don't have that in perfect condition.

• Incredibly high latency for Ubuntu guest on Hyper-V

  I've got several Ubuntu 10.04 virtual machines running as Hyper-V guests on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 and they're all perfectly fine. Today I installed my first Ubuntu 11.10 virtual machine and I'm seeing rediculous pings: These servers are all connected via gigabit to a local LAN, with almost no network traffic at all1, with a legacy network adapter in Hyper-V. I'm a bit of an Ubuntu n00b so I don't really know where to go from here. Any ideas? free -m reports: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 485 470 15 0 63 299 -/+ buffers/cache: 107 378 Swap: 507 20 487 This is within a few mb of our other Ubuntu servers that are on 10.04. I removed the Legacy NIC and installed a Synthetic one in Hyper-V and this did improve the numbers, in that they're around 10-30ms now, but I would still be expecting <1ms response times. 1As a comparison, I have another Ubuntu 10.04 guest on Hyper-V almost 1,000km away that has a ping of 33ms

• Is there a diff utility that allows you to exclude columns?

  For example, I have a text file, each line is a long string. I want to exclude 2 "segments" of this string, say columns 1-7 and 20-22. So the bottom 2 lines below would be a match: 123456789012345678901234567890 ------------------------------ xxxxxxxAAAAAAAAAAAAxxxBBBBBBBB yyyyyyyAAAAAAAAAAAAyyyBBBBBBBB I know WinMerge has a "IgnoreColumns" plugin but I have never go this working. In this example I would rename it IgnoreColumns_1-7, 20-22.dll, select it in the plugins menu, and choose "Pre-Differ." but it has never worked. I am going to be comparing huge files that I don't want to modify. I'm not opposed to stream editing them in the comparison with sed or something like that, but I would prefer not to modify the actual files. I have not chose to feed sed to diff yet just because I was hoping for for a more visual view of the data.

• If Nvidia Shield can stream a game via WiFi (~150-300Mbps), where is the 1-10Gbps wired streaming?

  Facts: It is surprising and uncharacteristic that a wireless game streaming solution is the *first to hit the market when a 1000mbps+ Ethernet connection would accomplish the same feat with roughly 6x the available bandwidth. 150-300mbps WiFi is in no way superior to a 1000mbps+ LAN connection aside from well wireless mobility. Throughout time, (since the internet was created) wired services have **always come first yet in this particular case, the opposite seems to be true. We had wired internet first, wired audio streaming, and wired video streaming all before their wireless counterparts. Why? Largely because the wireless bandwidth was and is inferior. Even today despite being significantly better and capable of a lot more, it is still inferior to a wired connection. Situation: Chief among these is that NVIDIA’s Shield handheld game console will be getting a microconsole-like mode, dubbed “Shield Console Mode”, that will allow the handheld to be converted into a more traditional TV-connected console. In console mode Shield can be controlled with a Bluetooth controller, and in accordance with the higher resolution of TVs will accept 1080p game streaming from a suitably equipped PC, versus 720p in handheld mode. With that said 1080p streaming will require additional bandwidth, and while 720p can be done over WiFi NVIDIA will be requiring a hardline GigE connection for 1080p streaming (note that Shield doesn’t have Ethernet, so this is presumably being done over USB). Streaming aside, in console mode Shield will also support its traditional local gaming/application functionality. - http://www.anandtech.com/show/7435/nvidia-consolidates-game-streaming-tech-under-gamestream-brand-announces-shield-console-mode ^ This is not acceptable to me for a number of reasons not to mention the ridiculousness of having a little screen+controller unit sitting there while using a secondary controller and screen instead. That kind of redundant absurdity exemplifies how wrong of a solution that is. They need a second product for this solution without the screen or controller for it to make sense... at which point your just buying a little computer that does what most other larger computers do better. While this secondary project will provide a wired connection, it still shouldn't be necessary to purchase a Shield to have this benefit. Not only this but Intel's WiDi claims game streaming support as well - wirelessly. Where is the wired streaming? All that is required, by my understanding, is the ability to decode H.264 video compression and transmit control/feedback so by any logical comparison, one (Nvidia especially) should have no difficulty in creating an application for PC's (win32/64 environment) that does the exact same thing their android app does. I have 2 video cards capable of streaming (encoding) H.264 so by right they must be capable of decoding it I would think. I should be able to stream to my second desktop or my laptop both of which by hardware comparison are superior to the Shield. I haven't found anything stating plans to allow non-shield owners to do this. Can a third party create this software or does it hinge on some limitation that only Nvidia can overcome? Reiteration of questions: Is there a technical reason (non marketing) for why Nvidia opted to bottleneck the streaming service with a wireless connection limiting the resolution to 720p and introducing intermittent video choppiness when on a wired connection one could achieve, presumably, 1080p with significantly less or zero choppiness? Is there anything limiting developers from creating a PC/Desktop application emulating the same H.264 decoding functionality that circumvents the need to get an Nvidia Shield altogether? (It is not a matter of being too cheap to support Nvidia - I have many Nvidia cards that aren't being used. One should not have to purchase specialty hardware when = hardware already exists) Same questions go for Intel Widi also. I am just utterly perplexed that there are wireless live streaming solution and yet no wired. How on earth can wireless be the goto transmission medium? Is there another solution that takes advantage of H.264 video compression allowing live streaming over a wired connection? (*) - Perhaps this isn't the first but afaik it is the first complete package. (**) - I cant back that up with hard evidence/links but someone probably could. Edit: Maybe this will be the solution I am looking for but I still find it hard to believe that they would be the first and after wireless solutions already exist. • BES 5.0 and MAPI calls to exchange system

  We have been using BES 4.1(5) for a while now and it has been a resource hog on exchange due to high number of MAPI calls. I have heard that BES 5.0 is even worse. the comparison i heard is that BES 4.1 is makes MAPI calls equal to 5 outlook clients per BB user and BES 5.0 makes MAPI calls equal to 10 outlook clients per BB user. can someone confirm if it is true? is BES 5.0 is really that bad in MAPI calls and for exchange performance. ? thanks

• Windows Batch Scripting: Newest File Matching a Pattern

  This would be lightning quick in linux, but I'm not familiar enough with windows flavour of batch scripting. Basically I want to look for a series of files matching a certain wildcard, and get the one with the most recent modified date. I've gotten as far as: for %%X in (*.exe) do ( REM Do stuff.... ) But I'm not sure what manner of comparison operators there are, or if there's a better way of doing this. Anyone offer up any good solutions? Ideally it would involve a vanilla install of Vista; so no special trickery like cygwin/etc.

• Would Microsoft Security Essentials be adequate protection?

  Is Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) adequate protection for my computer? What is the experience with this product? EDIT. On 2009-10-31 I found out about a comparison of AV Suites. MSE did VERY well. EDIT: One that I found interesting was "Raven", who mentioned that AV software has to hook deeply into the OS, and who better to design this than the designer of the OS. EDIT: My personal experience is that I like it, but I also use Malwarebytes and Superantispyware. Each of them sometimes come up with one the others missed or ignored.

• Hyper-V core NIC speeds and registry changes

  Good afternoon, On a Dell PE T610 I have Hyper-V core running, with 2 x Broadcom BCM5709C NetXtreme II GigE installed. I have noticed that copying large files 17GB for example, from a network physical server to the Hyper-V host local drive [not vm guest] is very slow in comparison to copying from Physical to Physical servers. Copying a 17GB file physical to Hyper-V host takes 30 minutes Copying a 17GB file physical to physical host takes 15 minutes Can someone tell me exactly what registry nodes I should disable on Hyper-V NICs to improve performance. So far I have gone to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4 D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and set the following to 0 on both physical NICs: *LSOv1IPv4 *LSOv2IPv6 *TCPUDPChecksumOffloadIPv4 *TCPUDPChecksumOffloadIPv6 Should I also disable *TCPConnectionOffloadIPv4 & *TCPConnectionOffloadIPv6? • What are the performance differences between PCI-Express x16 and x4

  I have two PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots on my motherboard, but one of them is actually just x4. For passing through my graphics card to a virtual machine I need to use both slots simultaneously and unfortunately, the easiest way for me to achieve that is putting the stronger card in the x4 slot (secondary slot; I need the stronger card to be in the secondary slot, not the primary). As such I am wondering what sort of noticable performance differences I can expect from using the x4 slot with a strong card as opposed to having it in the true x16 slot. Does it limit the performance so much that the strong card in the x4 slot will actually perform worse than the significantly weaker card in the x16 slot? (For spec comparison I am using a GTX-670 in the x4 slot and GTX-550-Ti in the x16 slot) What implications does this have?

  I have been using OpenX's AdServer with mySql as a backend, and since OpenX allows one to choose between mysql and postgres, I was wondering if anyone ever used Postgres and wished to talk about their experience with it here. Also, is there anyone who maybe tried using OpenX with both and can offer a comparison between the databases ? I am asking this question because I was having some trouble recently with mySql because some tables crashed occasionally and proved problematic because of the overhead they generated; and as a consequence of this, Statistics where not being generated.
