  • Backup files from Linux client to Windows Server

    I'm trying to backup my files from my Linux box to my Windows Server 2008 as a push, and when I delete them from my Linux box, they remain on my Windows Server. I've found lots of sources that are similar, but most results were from Windows to Linux. I managed to find slightly more similar cases like Using rsync and cygwin to Sync Files from a Linux Server to a Windows Notebook PC, and rsync from Windows PC to remote Linux server, with the most similar being a backup from Linux to Windows Server, but through a pull from the Windows Server. Initially, I used Unison because I thought having the 2-way capability would come in handy, and I would just have to set some configurations to make it 1-way. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the right configuration, and only managed to synchronize using the command unison "profile" -ui text -auto -silent. When I deleted the files on my Linux box, the files in the Server got deleted too, which of course, isn't what I want. When I tried to find any options for Unison, I only discovered the -force option, which didn't help, since what I wanted was an incremental update to the Server. I found out I could achieve this from using rsync and the -a option (archive), which would keep adding files even if I deleted them from my Linux box. I installed Cygwin on my Windows Server, configured an SSH daemon, but I can't seem to get it working. I've also already configured Windows Firewall to open port 22 (both inbound and outbound). I used the following command from my Linux box: rsync -avrzn /folder/to/be/backed/up/ [email protected]:/cygdrive/c/place/to/store/backed/up/files (a - archive, v - verbose, r - recurse into subdirectories, z - compress, n - dryrun) but it just won't work. Can anyone help me out? I don't mind using either Unison or rsync, as long as it achieves what I want.

  • Track kids browsing history even when they know how to clear it manually

    I have a colleague with two teenage boys (yes, cue cliche's about 'I have this friend see...') He's currently having issues with them browsing pr0n and wants to do a little spying on their browsing (I'm staying clear of the philosophies/ethics on this.) The kids are savvy enough to clear their browsing history when they're done. As I'm his goto for IT he has asked me if there is a way to keep a hold of the browsing history. The family uses Macs, and the kids surf with Safari. I know that browsing history is kept here ~/Library/Safari/History.plist. I figure there should be a way to write either an AppleScript or other script (Python/Ruby/Bash) that can backup this file to a different location (/opt/local/history, etc.) Since the kids know to clear their history when they're done should the file be periodically backed up with something similar to a cron job or something like Hazel? While that could work it seems like it would create a ton of little incremental backups. Or is it possible to 'watch' ~/Library/Safari/History.plist and incrementally add changes to a backup file (saving a diff so to speak) but not lose any data? Any ideas/solutions appreciated. UPDATE/EDIT: Got the word from concerned dad that the oldest uses Firefox on a different PC, so the OpenDNS solution (preferably at the router level) is the best answer so far as it would capture usage for the whole house.

  • Windows 7 access denied to executables.. by what?

    Ever since I started using Windows 7 this problem has been bothering me. From time to time I see similar questions popping up on misc forums, but never did I see an answer. Here are two scenarios that nearly always reproduce it: the explorer way with explorer, navigate to a directory containing at least one exe file go one directory up immediately delete the directory just navigated to yields Folder Acces Denied dialog stating You need permission to perform this action You require permission from Administrators to make changes to this folder, with the buttons try Again and Cancel hitting Try Again never works immediately. Waiting a minute or so and then clickig it again does work note: if in step 2 and waiting a minute or more before going up one directory, the problem does not occur and the folder can be deleted the visual studio way build a project producing an exe file run the executable then close it immediately build the project again (by changing a single character in a source file for example) yields fatal error LNK1168: cannot open /path/to/the.exe for writing note: if in step 2 and waiting a minute or more before building again, the problem does not occur some specs happens both on Windows 7 32 and 64 bit, with VS2008/2010/2011 happens on 3 different machines I do not have a virusscanner of any kind I do have a bunch of services disabled, but nothing that prevents Windows from running normally, UAC is disabled as well happens on any type of disc I always use a user account that is in the Administrators group Obviously both scenarios are very similar and extremely reproducable. So I figured some process must have the file open for some reason, and release it again later. However, using systinternal's handle -a the exe file in question never shows up. (that is the correct way to use handle, right?) So while explorer/VS are reporting they cannot access the file, handle.exe says it's not in use anywhere. This leaves me rather clueless, so I'm wondering if someone can come up with a solution: why does this happen, and how to solve it?

  • How do I copy files between harddrives on Ubuntu CLI?

    I have a dedicated server with a 120gb main ssd. The server happens to come with a couple of 3000GB hard drives. I'd like to use them to back up my main drive. Preferably, I'd like one as an exact copy of the main SSD and the other with incremental backups of the mysql database and a user uploads file.   • Desktop Provisioning for a Small Linux Software Development Team

    Goal: Get a small team using a standard development image rather than 4 software devs setting up their own environments. Why: it takes a day or days to install a distro, build-specific libraries, tools like editors and IDEs, mysql, couchdb, java, maven, python, android-sdk, etc. It's a giant PITA that when repeated 4 times by 4 developers (not sys admins) wastes time and generates annoying divergences that crop up later (it-builds-on-my-box syndrome). There's no sharing of productivity, settings, tricks, scripts, set-ups. Some of this is helped by segregating the build systems into headless virtualbox images. This doesn't really address tooling though or the GUI-desktop dev that needs doing. So I see three basic strategies, ghosting, virtualization, and finally creating a kind of in-house linux distro (I guess Google does something like this). The target dev environment is based on Debian OpenBox and must allow a mix of 3rd gen Core i7 notebooks 8GB-minimum to work both single and multihead. Important, the lappies are not the same, but a mix of 2012 macbooks and PCs. So: virtualization: is doing all of your work within a VM, like VirtualBox, practical on this hardware or annoying. ghosting: will laptops from different manufacturers make this impractical. DIY distro: short of scripting a bunch of package installs, I don't know if there's any "distro-maker" that could keep this from being an epic project of scripting package installs. So any advice?

  • Full-text search locks up database - error 0x8001010e

    Hi We have a full-text catalog that is populated via a job every 15 minutes like so: ALTER FULLTEXT INDEX ON [dbo].[WorkItemLongTexts] START INCREMENTAL POPULATION We have encountered a problem where the database containing this catalog locks up. There are a couple of scenarios, we either see the job execute and the process hang with with a wait type of UNKNOWN TOKEN, or we see another process hang with a wait type of MSSEARCH. Once this happens the job continues to run but informs us that the request to start a full-text index population is ignored because a population is currently active. Looking in the full text log files we see the following error each time these problems occur: 2010-04-21 08:15:00.76 spid21s The full-text catalog health monitor reported a failure for full-text catalog "XXXFullTextCatalog" (5) in database "YYY" (14). Reason code: 0. Error: 0x8001010e(The application called an interface that was marshalled for a different thread.). The system will restart any in-progress population from the previous checkpoint. If this message occurs frequently, consult SQL Server Books Online for troubleshooting assistance. This is an informational message only. No user action is required."'' The only solution is to restart the SQL Server service and then the full text service. This is now occuring on a daily basis now so any help would be appreciated.

[WARN ] -XX:PermSize=1024m is not a valid VM option. Ignoring [WARN ] -XX:MaxPermSize=1024m is not a valid VM option. Ignoring Could not create the Java virtual machine. This indicates the Java that I have on my system java version "1.6.0_20" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02) Oracle JRockit(R) (build R28.1.0-123-138454-1.6.0_20-20101014-1351-windows-x86_64, compiled mode) and I am running a Windows 7 on Intel Core 2 duo 3Ghz processor and 8gb RAM Any pointers in solving this issue would be of great help.   • Best way to create and restore a Drive Image with Windows 7? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Want to create a system image I am about to build a new PC. I am a windows 7 user. For years now I have been wanting to install windows and all my favorite software, music, etc., and then make a drive IMAGE and be able to go in 6 months later or WHENEVER I want to start fresh and completely format my drives and restore my IMAGE and have all my settings, programs, etc be just5 like when I created the original image. I know there is many ways to do this but I have never done this 100% successfully and I have about a week to figure out how to do it perfectly for when I build my new PC. I have heard good things about using tried Acronis true image in the PAST for doing what I describe4, I tried using it but, but the newer versions are overly complex and don't even seem to work the way I hoped. I also see that Windows 7 has some sort of drive IMAGE creator itself as well. Does the newer Windows 7 image creator do what I am describing above? If it does do what I am asking for (complete drive image with windows, all programs and settings) saved to an IMAGE file that can easily be restored to ANY hard drive in the future? Please share your experiences, tips, ideas on how to achieve this the easiest and most reliable way please

  • P2V Wouldn't Boot, Rebuilt initrd, Need to Clean Up

    We have a CentOS 5.4 server (build 2.6.18-164.el5xen). We went to P2V this server so we can have redundancy, the physical only has one PSU. The P2V only completed 99% of the way, we have a VMWare ticket opened, but they marked the ticket as low priority. I was able to boot into a rescue disc of Red Hat 5.4 and rebuild the initrd with the help of this blog post. Now the only issue is the original server had a modified initrd, which was also from a different OS build and made by an outside provider. We do not have a document outlining modifications. My question is, is it at all possible to copy the initrd off of the physical server and replace it on the virtual and some how have the virtual machine boot? Thanks for any input. Edit: I copied the initrd img from the physical and it recreated the original issue.   • Why isn't Apache Basic authentication working?

    I just upgraded Apache from it's 2003 build, to a squeaky-clean, brand-new 2.4.1 build. All seems pretty good except for one glaring thing: In my httpd.conf file I have the following: <Directory /> AllowOverride none Options FollowSymLinks AuthType Basic AuthName "Enter Password" AuthUserFile /var/www/.htpasswd Require valid-user </Directory> This should allow only users in the specified auth file to access the server - just as it had under the older version of Apache. (Right?) However, it's not working. Requests are granted with no authentication provided. When I compared raw ruby performance to another identical machine the older machine smoked them. It's as if something changed in RVM, or I installed some package that made compiled versions of ruby perform significantly worse. I know this is a tough question to answer, but what things should I look into in order to track down why the performance has suffered so much? edit I just attempted to install with ruby-build and the version installed was fast. Something rvm is doing to build it in my environment is slow.

    Suppose I want to build a server for the university's academic interests. The server is dedicated only to a site, where users (students and lecturers) just view and fill the academic data. But at a time (e.g. once a semester), about 12,000 students will access the site simultaneously. Due to limitation of resources, I have to build the server using free software (except for the operating system Windows 7, the university has been prepared). The hardware is also limited to the usual 4-core computers (eg, Ivy Bridge Intel Core i7-3770) with approximately 16GB of memory (DDR3 1600 MHz), equipped with an RJ-45 port (Intel 82 579 Gigabit Ethernet). With all these limitations, I have to choose the software (web server, database, etc) are appropriate for this purpose is achieved. I decided to create a site in PHP. Please help me by answering the following questions based on your expertise. (my prime candidate software to consider after googling) Web server which is faster & stable & secure, when implemented and optimized for PHP? And why? (nginx) PHP accelerator which is faster & stable & compatible with the selected web server? And why? (APC with Zend Optimizer+) Database which is faster & stable & secure, when implemented and optimized for selected web server and selected PHP accelerator? (MySQL) Are there any errors that have been or will be happening from my condition is? If there is, please enlighten me? Is there anything else I need to know in order to achieve this goal? If there is, please enlighten me? I understand that the performance also depends on the implementation of source-code program, so I assume it will create a site with the best efficiency (e.g. using AJAX).

  • Are ZFS snapshots + S3 a viable backup system for several VMs and general fileserver storage?

    I've been tasked with setting up a backup system for my small office (around 12 people). Most of our production stuff is on the AWS cloud, so what I need to back up are some small office/development files (under 100G right now), plus our operational VMs and development, which round out to a bit under 1T. I just need something reliable, convenient, and straightforward. I'm comfortable with Linux, FreeBSD, and to some extent Solaris 10, so I'm leaning toward a full server rather than an appliance system ala Openfiler or FreeNAS. What I'm contemplating is a small fileserver for general storage and nightly backups of the virtual machines, followed up by an offsite backup to Amazon's S3 storage service. It'd be the usual incremental backups nightly and full backup weekly. My question is if using ZFS snapshots, both locally and dumped to S3 via 'zfs send [-i]', is a viable backup tool? Or should I stick to using Duplicity, or some other method entirely? ZFS snapshots on the internal fileserver/backup machine sound like a perfect way to provide quick and convenient data recovery, so I'm likely to go with that for local redundancy. (If you folks see scenarios where relying on ZFS snapshots would be worse than a more traditional archiving backup, feel free to convince me.) But are snapshots flexible enough to lean on for recovery from the loss of my backup server? Or am I better off with something more traditional? (feel free to recommend free or commercial backup solutions you favor.)

  • 150 TB and growing, but how to grow?

    My group currently has two largish storage servers, both NAS running debian linux. The first is an all-in-one 24-disk (SATA) server that is several years old. We have two hardware RAIDS set up on it with LVM over those. The second server is 64 disks divided over 4 enclosures, each a hardware RAID 6, connected via external SAS. We use XFS with LVM over that to create 100TB useable storage. All of this works pretty well, but we are outgrowing these systems. Having build two such servers and still growing, we want to build something that allows us more flexibility in terms of future growth, backup options, that behaves better under disk failure (checking the larger filesystem can take a day or more), and can stand up in a heavily concurrent environment (think small computer cluster). We do not have system administration support, so we administer all of this ourselves (we are a genomics lab). So, what we seek is a relatively low-cost, acceptable performance storage solution that will allow future growth and flexible configuration (think ZFS with different pools having different operating characteristics). We are probably outside the realm of a single NAS. We have been thinking about a combination of ZFS (on openindiana, for example) or btrfs per server with glusterfs running on top of that if we do it ourselves. What we are weighing that against is simply biting the bullet and investing in Isilon or 3Par storage solutions. Any suggestions or experiences are appreciated.

  • NTbackup doesn't complete on system state

    I have a Windows 2003 server that is running a semi-custom backup task. The scheduled task calls NTbackup with a few switches depending on whether it is a full or incremental backup. Most of the time, the NTbackup completes fine, and the wrapper then appends the NTbackup log into its own log before adding a few final comments and completing. The problem I am having is that sometimes, NTbackup seems to just... blank out. It always completes backup of the C: and E: drives, but then it will start the system state and not add any more messages into the event log saying it completed that. And the NTbackup log is left empty, since it doesn't write anything to the log until all the backup tasks are complete. This is causing the wrapper to append no text into its own log. That causes problems for us because we read the information out of that log to determine whether backups are failing. The wrapper task also reports that it is completing normally in the event log. Anyone ever seen a case where system state doesn't complete consistently? To be clear, the server is not logging any error messages anywhere. It's just not seeming to complete or log anything.

  • What needs to be considered when setting up for Linux Development? [closed]

    I want to set up a box for Linux development. I have a working linux install with the usual toolchain and an IDE. I'm looking for advice on how to approach structuring accounts and folders for development. As the Perl folks say "There's always more than one way to do it." Left to my own devices, I'll come up with several unproductive ways of doing it before figuring out what an experienced Linux programmer would think obvious. I'm not looking for instructions to follow for a specific set of tools or a specific software package. Instead, I'm looking for insight into what decisions need to be made and how to make them, with understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of each individual choice. These are some of the questions that come up: Where to put sources Where to put built object files and libraries where to install what to set in environment variables what compiler flags matter and how do you manage them across several types of builds what configuration entries to make in an IDE how to manage libraries to support multiple environments how to handle different build versions such as debug vs release, or cross platform builds If you are an experienced Linux developer, the answers to these questions may seem trivial and obvious. I'd like to learn to make decisions about these questions that result in as little manual configuration as possible, given some existing sources, a particular IDE, or no IDE at all, a paticular set of development libraries etc. At this point you're probably thinking: Can you be more specific? Sure. But remember that I'm trying to learn how to think about this stuff, not just follow a recipie for a specific set of results. Example: Setup a project that uses CMake for some of its components, autogen.sh followed by configure for others and just configure for a few more: debug builds without an IDE debug builds in NetBeans debug builds in Eclipse debug build in Visual Studio all of the above with release builds for Linux, Mac and Windows. So... **What are your thoughts on an approach that works for all four? Do you have any advice on what to read?**

  • Getting PAM/user info into php - something like Net_Finger instead of a db?

    I've got a very small user group who just need to login, upload, check and then move specific files to a different area when ready. Right now, I use the nginx PAM auth module to log them in against their unix accounts. As their login is their home directory, I've already got the info to send the uploads to the right area - one line of php and no database needed. But I'm maintaining a separate DB just so PHP can welcome them, grab their email and send them an email when processed. Yes, sure I could use nosql or sqlite instead so as to not need a whole mysql install. But it occurred to me that as I've got all these blank user fields for phone numbers I could populate with any data, that I could use something like php's Net_Finger. Which failed for me with: sudo pear install Net_Finger Starting to download Net_Finger-1.0.1.tgz (1,618 bytes) ....done: 1,618 bytes could not extract the package.xml file from "/build/buildd/php5-5.5.9+dfsg/pear-build-download/Net_Finger-1.0.1.tgz" Download of "pear/Net_Finger" succeeded, but it is not a valid package archive Error: cannot download "pear/Net_Finger" At which point I thought I'd stop, and take a ServerFault reality check - is this a really bad/dangerous/stupid idea just to stop me having to maintain details in two places rather than one? It there a better way? Googling shows that it's not an oft-asked thing, so perhaps with good reason?

  • Identifying Exchange 2010 regular process that is walking the mailbox database

    I have an Exchange 2010 server running on a SAN-backed platform. The platform does block-level backups based on a snapshot/incremental basis, that only capture changed data. I was surprised to see a regular period of time where the data changes were happening at a high, sustained rate. Due to the way this system works, that can lead to 1.2TB of stored data per month. The regularity implied a scheduled task, but it is not a fixed interval. It is approximately every 26-32hrs. The disks were performing read operations of ~5MB/s and write operations of ~4.5MB/s, for a period of 3-4hrs. The total written data was ~55-60GB. Reading on TechNet, I am wondering if the following is causing this: http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2011/12/14/database-maintenance-in-exchange-2010.aspx#checksumming The somewhat restrictive thing is that the process only happens at most once every 24 hours. I was able to investigate while it was running, finding the following: the process is store.exe it is working on the mailbox database files while running, it is generating .log files (in the mailbox database folder) consistent with database changes the mailbox database is ~60GB in size, which fits with the total data changes on each iteration I have currently switched to a fixed maintenance window, as a test. It's not clear whether this is the cause, as the symptoms fit, but are not conclusive. Does anyone have any suggestions for additional troubleshooting?

  • How to avoid duplicates when copying files that have been renamed at the destination

    I have to get pictures from a folder – with subfolders which are updated automatically – with their extensions. These files have to be copied in a folder where a website based on PHP will edit them (by renaming and creating an XML file) to be downloadable and integrated in an XML feed. Because of the rename function of the script, when I perform the copy gain, all the files are duplicated, because the script has renamed the original ones already.   • How to make a redundant desktop system with daily snapshots? (Is btrfs ready for use?)

    I want to configure a desktop system in which the home filesystem would be redundant (e.g. RAID-1), and would have weekly snapshots taken. I've already done this with ZFS, the snapshot system is wonderful, and with send/recv you can easily create backups on external media. Unfortunately, at that point, I want GNU+Linux and not FreeBSD or Solaris, so I'm looking for suggestions for good alternatives. I reckon that my alternatives are: btrfs - it seems to be exactly what I need, it has snapshots and commands that allow you to easily replicate zfs send. Yet all documentation mentions that it's still experimental. I can't seem to find any actual reports on its reliability or usability issues. Can you point me to any information on that issue that could clarify whether it would be a possible choice? I have a large preference for this option, mostly because I don't want to reformat the drives when btrfs becomes ready, but I there's no information on whether it's usable at all, whether it's a silly idea to use it, etc. The question that I cannot get the answer to is what does "experimental" mean. lvm snapshots and ext4 - preferably not, since it can consume an awful amount of space when new files are created. Creating 200 GB files requres 200 GB free space and 200 GB additionally for snapshots. I also have found it unreliable -- failed metadata rewrite results in an unreadable PV. I'm wondering how btrfs would compare here. A single filesystem (ext4) on a RAID-1 array with custom COW snapshots with hardlinks (like cp -al). That's my current preference if I can't use btrfs. So how experimental btrfs is, which should I choose, and do I have any other options? What if I don't keep external incremental backups, would that affect my choice?

  • 2008R2 Standard and Hyper-V and Ram Usage (Usable vs Available)

    A new server was purchased for our development team to start utilizing the full feature set of TFS, namely Lab Management. Because of the need for Lab Management we bought a fairly beefy machine to handle this task and to also act as a build machine. I have been tasked to setup additional features TFS on this machine starting out with a build controller and eventually going towards a full out Lab Management setup using Hyper-V. My question: Upon initially logging I noticed that Windows is registering 64gb but only 32gb available. I know this is a limitation because of licencing since only Standard Edition is installed. Since Hyper-V is another layer that handles the virtualization of guest OS's is Hyper-V able to access this memory? Or is Hyper-V memory usage also limited by 2008 R2 Standard? If Hyper-V can somehow access this memory, is this how it should be setup? Or should the host 2008R2 Standard be upgraded to Enterprise so the Host can utilize the full 64gb? Before I go hog wild and using TFS I wanted to ask some experts so I don't need to reinstall the OS down the road to utilize the additional 32gb. Thanks for any help or links you can share.

  • Gradle + Robolectric: Where do I put the file org.robolectric.Config.properties?

    I'm trying to setup a test using Robolectric to click on a menu button in this repository. Basic Robolectric tests will run, but I'm not able to run any project-specific test using resources because it says it can't find my AndroidManifest.xml. After running ../gradlew clean check, here's the standard output from the Robolectric html file: WARNING: No manifest file found at ./AndroidManifest.xml.Falling back to the Android OS resources only. To remove this warning, annotate your test class with @Config(manifest=Config.NONE). I found these instructions which indicate I should create an org.robolectric.Config.properties file, but I'm not sure where to put it. I've tried everywhere, pretty much, and despite moving the file, the path in the error message is always the same as above (./AndroidManifest.xml). This makes me think the build process has never picked up the settings in the file org.robolectric.Config.properties. I also tried the @Config(manifest="") directive but this gave me a cannot find symbol error. If I move the AndroidManifest.xml into my project directory, then I get an error about it not being able to find the path ./res/values and I wasn't able to resolve that either. Any ideas? Update 1 Thanks Eugen, I'm now using @RunWith(RobolectricGradleTestRunner.class) instead of @RunWith(RobolectricTestRunner).   • NetBeans Development 7 - Windows 7 64-bit … JNI native calls ... a how to guide

    I provide this for you to hopefully save you some time and pain. As part of my expereince in getting to know NB Development v7 on my Windows 64-bit workstation I found another frustrating adventure in trying to get the JNI (Java Native Interface) abilities up and working in my project. As such, I am including a brief summary of steps required (as all the documentation I found was completely incorrect for these versions of Windows and NetBeans on how to do JNI). It took a couple of days of experimentation and reviewing every webpage I could find that included these technologies as keyword searches. Yuk!! Not fun. To begin, as NetBeans Development is "all about modules" if you are reading this you probably have a need for one, or more, of your modules to perform JNI calls. Most of what is available on this site or the Internet in general (not to mention the help file in NB7) is either completely wrong for these versions, or so sparse as to be essentially unuseful to anyone other than a JNI expert. Here is what you are looking for ... the "cut to the chase" - "how to guide" to get a JNI call up and working on your NB7 / Windows 64-bit box. 1) From within your NetBeans Module (not the host appliation) declair your native method(s) and make sure you can compile the Java source without errors. Example: package org.mycompanyname.nativelogic; public class NativeInterfaceTest { static { try { if (System.getProperty( "os.arch" ).toLowerCase().equals( "amd64" ) ) System.loadLibrary( <64-bit_folder_name_on_file_system>/<file_name.dll> ); else System.loadLibrary( <32-bit_folder_name_on_file_system>/<file_name.dll> ); } catch (SecurityException se) {} catch (UnsatisfieldLinkError ule) {} catch (NullPointerException npe) {} } public NativeInterfaceTest() {} native String echoString(String s); } Take notice to the fact that we only load the Assembly once (as it's in a static block), because othersise you will throw exceptions if attempting to load it again. Also take note of our single (in this example) native method titled "echoString". This is the method that our C / C++ application is going to implement, then via the majic of JNI we'll call from our Java code. 2) If using a 64-bit version of Windows (which we are here) we need to open a 64-bit Visual Studio Command Prompt (versus the standard 32-bit version), and execute the "vcvarsall" BAT file, along with an "amd64" command line argument, to set the environment up for 64-bit tools. Example: <path_to_Microsoft_Visual_Studio_10.0>/VC/vcvarsall.bat amd64 Take note that you can use any version of the C / C++ compiler from Microsoft you wish. I happen to have Visual Studio 2005, 2008, and 2010 installed on my box so I chose to use "v10.0" but any that support 64-bit development will work fine. The other important aspect here is the "amd64" param. 3) In the Command Prompt change drives \ directories on your computer so that you are at the root of the fully qualified Class location on the file system that contains your native method declairation. Example: The fully qualified class name for my natively declair method is "org.mycompanyname.nativelogic.NativeInterfaceTest". As we successfully compiled our Java in Step 1 above, we should find it contained in our NetBeans Module something similar to the following: "/build/classes/org/mycompanyname/nativelogic/NativeInterfaceTest.class" We need to make sure our Command Prompt sets, as the current directly, "/build/classes" because of our next step. 4) In this step we'll create our C / C++ Header file that contains the JNI required statments. Type the following in the Command Prompt: javah -jni org.mycompanyname.nativelogic.NativeInterfaceTest and hit enter. If you receive any kind of error that states this is an unrecognized command that simply means your Windows computer does not know the PATH to that command (it's in your /bin folder). Either run the command from there, or include the fully qualified path name when invoking this application, or set your computer's PATH environmental variable to include that path in its search. This should produce a file called "org_mycompanyname_nativelogic_NativeInterfaceTest.h" ... a C Header file. I'd make a copy of this in case you need a backup later. 5) Edit the NativeInterfaceTest.h header file and include an implementation for the echoString() method. Example: JNIEXPORT jstring JNICALL Java_org_mycompanyname_nativelogic_NativeInterfaceTest_echoString (JNIEnv *env, jobject jobj, jstring js) { return((*env)->NewStringUTF(env, "My JNI is up and working after lots of research")); } Notice how you can't simply return a normal Java String (because you're in C at the moment). You have to tell the passed in JVM variable to create a Java String for you that will be returned back. Check out the following Oracle web page for other data types and how to create them for JNI purposes. 6) Close and Save your changes to the Header file. Now that you've added an implementation to the Header change the file extention from ".h" to ".c" as it's now a C source code file that properly implements the JNI required interface. Example: NativeInterfaceTest.c 7) We need to compile the newly created source code file and Link it too. From within the Command Prompt type the following: cl /I"path_to_my_jdks_include_folder" /I"path_to_my_jdks_include_win32_folder" /D:AMD64=1 /LD NativeInterfaceTest.c /FeNativeInterfaceTest.dll /link /machine:x64 Example: cl /I"D:/Program Files/Java/jdk1.6.0_21/include" /I"D:/Program Files/java/jdk1.6.0_21/include/win32" /D:AMD64=1 /LD NativeInterfaceTest.c /FeNativeInterfaceTest.dll /link /machine:x64 Notice the quotes around the paths to the 'include" and 'include/win32' folders is required because I have spaces in my folder names ... 'Program Files'. You can include them if you have no spaces without problems, but they are mandatory if you have spaces when using a command prompt. This will generate serveral files, but it's the DLL we're interested in. This is what the System.loadLirbary() java method is looking for. 8) Congratuations! You're at the last step. Simply take the DLL Assembly and paste it at the following location: <path_of_NetBeansProjects_folder>/<project_name>/<module_name>/build/cluster/modules/lib/x64 Note that you'll probably have to create the "lib" and "x64" folders. Example: C:\Users\<user_name>\Documents\NetBeansProjects\<application_name>\<module_name>\build\cluster\modules\lib\x64\NativeInterfaceTest.dll Java code ... notice how we don't inlude the ".dll" file extension in the loadLibrary() call? System.loadLibrary( "/x64/NativeInterfaceTest" ); Now, in your Java code you can create a NativeInterfaceTest object and call the echoString() method and it will return the String value you typed in the NativeInterfaceTest.c source code file.
