  • Server 2012 DFS New Member Issue

    I am trying to add a new member to our DFS topology. We have 3 DCs (VMs - VMware) running Windows server 2012, two servers are located in or Primary site and the third at our DR site. Currently the two servers at our primary site are currently replicating DFS (full mesh) and are working fine. I have tried several times to add the third DC to our DFS topology, every time i configure the replication path e.g E:\MSI and click ok the MMC snap in crashes. Below is the crash info, any idea what is causing this? What i am doing is fairly straight forward and don't see why this would be happening.     So, I'm trying to replicate MSDN "pseudoframes" here. Their pages are laid out like they're using an old-school frameset, but inspecting their elements with firebug reveals they've done this with purely div's. Here's my attempt at it.   • Help with understanding why UAC dialog pops up on Win7 for our application

    We have a C++ unmanaged application that appears to cause a UAC prompt. It seems to happen on Win7 and NOT on Vista Unfortunately the UAC dlg is system modal so I can't attach a debugger to check in the code where it is, and running under msdev (we're using 2008) runs in elevated mode. We put a message box at the start of our program/winmain but it doesn't even get that far, so apparently this is in the startup code. What can cause a UAC notification so early and what other things can I do to track down the cause? EDIT Apparently the manifest is an important issue here, but it seems not to be helping me - or perhaps I am not configuring the manifest file correctly. Can someone provide a sample manifest? Also, does the linker/UAC magic figure out that the program "might" write to the registry and set its UAC requirements based on that? There are code paths that might trigger UAC, but we are not even at that point when the UAC dlg comes up. An additional oddity is that this does not seem to happen on Vista with UAC turned on.   • SCCM 2012 - Windows 8 WSUS

    We're using SCCM 2012 to deploy Windows Updates on our domain, and our Windows 8 clients have started failing with error 80240438 when they try to update. Windows 7 clients update fine, but Windows 8 clients refuse to do anything. I've done a search online and it seems to only reference Windows InTune. Has anyone seen any similar behavior on Windows 8 machines? If we don't get that error, we're getting 80244021 which seems to indicate that the server can't be found.... but they can resolve it just fine and our exceptions are defined on the proxy too.   • Windows server reboot loop - uninstalling hotfixes

    After installing 3 updates, my system is stuck in a reboot loop. I am using server 2008 r2. I have tried deleting pending.xml from the windows directory, so pelase don't suggest that. I tried dism /image:d:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions which completed successfully but did not solve my issue I then tried: dism /image:d:\ /Remove-Package /PackageName: and sucusfully removed one of the 3 updates. The two updates that are left are not listed with the dism get-packages command, but are listed with the get-apppatches command. I cannot find a way to uninstall them with dism however. So my question is, how can I manually uninstall specific updates or hotfixes from within the winre environment?

    I've enabled automatic updates but windows cannot update itself automatically, nor updating via Internet Explorer (by visiting http://www.windowsupdate.com/) works. I get this error message in event log: Unable to Connect: Windows is unable to connect to the automatic updates service and therefore cannot download and install updates according to the set schedule. Windows will continue to try to establish a connection. What could be wrong? A malware?

Currently the product roll out and updates are handled by Group Policy however I would like to control the updates via ClickOnce deployment now. What I would like to know is, how should I initially roll out the package to make sure that all users have got it. Can I use a combination of Group Policy (the roll out) and then rely on the ClickOnce deployment model for any further updates?

    I have an Ubuntu 9.04 PC behind a corporate firewall and proxy server. This requires that in order to get update-manager to fetch and apply updates, I must set the proxy and authentication settings in the Synaptic network configuration. Once done, I can check for updates and things work smoothly (except I don't get popup notifications of new updates, must manually check periodically). However, distribution updates just don't show up in update-manager, such as the newly released 9.10 Karmic Koala. I had the same issue in upgrading 8.10 to 9.04 and solved it by downloading and upgrading from the 9.04 ISO. What do I need to do to upgrade to 9.10 using the standard update-manager UI?

Note that answering this question doesn't necessarily require any knowledge about the keyboard or rebinding the keys: I can add, for any given key, a "ShellExecute" entry, and it will simply execute the following command as if it was typed at a Command Prompt. (I'm aware I dumbed that down rather significantly, but bear with me. I'm not really a Windows guy myself.) I use the volume knob for it's intended purpose, to change volume. I would like to change, however, a different key, to "reset" the Windows volume level back to exactly 50%, or, as it refers to it, "50", on it's 0-100 scale. I'm looking for the "program" (what I would type at a command prompt? these are still just Sys32 programs in the PATH, aren't they?) that, I imagine, would take arguments, to change Sound/Volume settings under Windows 7. Perhaps, for clarification, something that might take the form "C: SetVolume -slevel 50" or something.

    I have a NAS device, it has 3 shares. On one computer I have access to all 3 of the shares. On another computer I keep getting this error when try and add a 2nd one.   • Win Server 2008 Hanging on "Applying Computer Settings"

    Applied ~8 updates this morning, and on reboot the server just sits on "Applying Computer Settings". I've let it sit for a max of almost 40m with no response. I hard-booted (/duck) and can get into safe-mode. From there it applies it's updates and is ok. But still on normal boot gets stuck in "applying". I've tried uninstalling the updates from safe-mode with the same reaction. Any insights?

    I have a brand new installation of Windows XP (SP1 or older). I installed Norton AntiVirus, Firefox, Putty, and Cygwin. No other software is present. Windows Update finds the following 64 updates: KB905760, KB978262, Internet Explorer 8, KB71961, KB954155, KB968816, KB923561, KB950762, KB949402, KB950974, KB951376, KB951748, KB952004, KB952954, KB955069, KB956572, KB956802, KB956803, KB956844, KB958470, KB958869, KB959426, KB960803, KB960859, KB961501, KB969059, KB970238, KB970238, KB971032, KB971468, KB971657, KB972270, KB973507, KB973815, KB973904, KB974112, KB974318, KB974392, KB975025, KB975560, KB975561, KB975713, .......) When these updates are applied, the system reboots to a black screen with two error messages. The first error message says: lsass.exe - Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000142). Click on OK to terminate the application. The second error message says: services.exe - Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000142). Click on OK to terminate the application. I then proceed to boot into Safe Mode, use System Restore, and everything works fine again until the 64 updates re-appear in Windows Update. I can see two options: disable Auto-Updates or install each of the 64 updates one at a time until finding the troublesome update. Does anyone have any better ideas?
