• IDE framework for a dynamic language?

  Let's say I have a super-wonderful new programming language, and I want there to be an IDE for it. What IDE platform/framework could I use to get this done efficiently? I mean things like: Collection of files in a project, searching them, tabbed/split editors etc. — the basics. Syntax highlighting and auto-indent/reformatting. Providing the user interface for code completion — hit tab, get a list (I'll have to implement the necessary partial evaluation myself (it's a dynamic language)). This is the feature I'm most wishing for. Built-in parser framework which is good at recovering from the sort of syntax errors occurring in code that is in the middle of being edited would be helpful. In-editor annotation of syntax/runtime error locations fed back from the language runtime. REPL (interactive evaluator) interaction with the same completion as in the editor. This system should be Linux/Mac/Windows cross-platform (in that priority order). Being implemented in Java (or rather, accepting language plugins written in Java) is possibly useful, but anything else is worth a try too.

  Hello. I have an ASP.net MVC2 application. In wich I'm using JQuery to alter all table rows so I can click anywhere in any row to trigger a click event on a link in the clicked row. The tables is created using MVC's built in partialview ajax. • WF -- how do I use a custom activity without creating it in a separate Workflow Activity Library?

  I am trying to accomplish something that seems like it should be very simple. I have a State Machine Workflow Console Application with a workflow in it. I have created a custom activity for it. This activity will NEVER be used ANYWHERE ELSE. I just want to use this activity on my workflow, but: It does not appear in the toolbox. I cannot drag it from the Solution Explorer onto the workflow designer. I absolutely do not want to create a separate State Machine Workflow Activity Library, since that will just clutter my solution. Like I said, I will never use this activity in any other project, so I would like to keep it confined to this one...but I just can't figure out how to get it onto the designer! Am I going crazy!? • Visual Studio breaks, and steps, but sometimes steps out

  Something very odd is going on. It's been going on for some time, but I've just ignored it up to now. I have both a Silverlight and WCF service in my solution, which shares .CS file between them (one project has a link to the file, which exists in the other project). While debugging the Silverlight app, pressing the F10 key steps through code as normal, and when I get to a method call which exists in the shared file (between the projects), and Press F11, it simply skips the method instead of stepping into it (and yes, the "Just My Code" option is not checked). If I put a breakpoint in the method I'm trying to get into, it works fine (as in the debugger will break on the line), but as soon as I step (F10) it exits the method (and with F11 [step into] also). Ok, on first thought, you might think it's to do with the link, but no, it isn't. I tried removing the link and using a copy instead, but the same thing happens. And no, it's not the debug symbols, I looked into that already. The method I'm trying to step through is static, and is in a non-static partial class, in a file shared by both projects. My guess: The same types and static methods exist in the WCF and Silverlight ... would the debugger get confused?

• How can I emulate Vim's * search in GNU Emacs?

  In Vim the * key in normal mode searches for the word under the cursor. In GNU Emacs the closest native equivalent would be: C-s C-w But that isn't quite the same. It opens up the incremental search mini buffer and copies from the cursor in the current buffer to the end of the word. In Vim you'd search for the whole word, even if you are in the middle of the word when you press *. I've cooked up a bit of elisp to do something similar: (defun find-word-under-cursor (arg) (interactive "p") (if (looking-at "\\<") () (re-search-backward "\\<" (point-min))) (isearch-forward)) That trots backwards to the start of the word before firing up isearch. I've bound it to C-+, which is easy to type on my keyboard and similar to *, so when I type C-+ C-w it copies from the start of the word to the search mini-buffer. However, this still isn't perfect. Ideally it would regexp search for "\<" word "\>" to not show partial matches (searching for the word "bar" shouldn't match "foobar", just "bar" on its own). I tried using search-forward-regexp and concat'ing \ but this doesn't wrap in the file, doesn't highlight matches and is generally pretty lame. An isearch-* function seems the best bet, but these don't behave well when scripted. Any ideas? Can anyone offer any improvements to the bit of elisp? Or is there some other way that I've overlooked?

• How do I generate a connection reset programatically?

  Hi, I'm sure you've seen the "the connection was reset" message displayed when trying to browse web pages. (The text is from Firefox, other browsers differ.) I need to generate that message/error/condition on demand, to test workarounds. So, how do I generate that condition programmatically? (How to generate a TCP RST from PHP -- or one of the other web-app languages?) Caveats and Conditions: It cannot be a general IP block. The test client must still be able to see the test server when not triggering the condition. Ideally, it would be done at the web-application level (Python, PHP, Coldfusion, Javascript, etc.). Access to routers is problematic. Access to Apache config is a pain. Ideally, it would be triggered by fetching a specific web-page. Bonus if it works on a standard, commercial web host. Update: Sending RST is not enough to cause this condition. See my partial answer, below. I've a solution that works on a local machine, Now need to get it working on a remote host.

• ASP.NET AJAX weirdness

  Ok, I thought I understood these topics well, but I guess not, so hopefully someone here can clear this up. Page.IsAsync seems to be broken. It always returns false. But ScriptManager.IsInAsyncPostBack seems to work, sort of. It returns true during the round trip for controls inside UpdatePanels. This is good; I can tell if it's a partial postback or a regular one. ScriptManager.IsInAsyncPostBack returns false however for async Page Methods. Why is this? It's not a regular postback, I'm just calling a public static method on the page. It causes a problem because I also realized that if you have a control with AutoPostBack = false, it won't trigger a postback on it's own, but if it has an event handler on the page, that event handler code WILL run on the next postback, regardless of how the postback occurred, IF the value has changed. i.e. if I tweak a dropdown and then hit a button, that dropdown's handler code will fire. This is ok, except that it will also happen during Page Method calls, and I have no way to know the difference. Any thoughts?

I would think that there should not be an issue. I tried creating a constructor for my Web User Control so that it would give default values to my properties but that didn't work. Any idea how to make this work? It doesn't seem like it should be that

• asp.net mvc stand alone ascx control how do i link (css and js) most efficiently

  Hi, I need some advice. I have developed some asp.net mvc web pages. Each page has a master and some ascx controls (between 2 - 6) embedded into it a js and css file. Up to now every thing was fine. In order to improve modularity, flexibility and testability the ascx's are now expected to be able to work as stand alone controls. (Each ascx has also got its own css and js files in some cases it has another control inside it) In order to meet this requirement we call the controller with the relevant parameters and it returns the ascx (partial) directly to the browser without all of the other parts of the original page . In order to get it to display correctly (css) and act correctly (js/jquery) all of the relevant files need to be added (as links or scripts eg. href="<%= ResolveUrl(styleSheet)%>") to the user control. This is "contradicting" the concept of positioning the files at the most logical place (could be the master page for example). How can I overcome this problem? Keep in mind that this is relevant for each "control" ascx file. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

• ASP.NET: "Object Required" when repeating LinkButtons in an UpdatePanel

  I have an UpdatePanel which has a Repeater repeating LinkButtons. When I click a LinkButton, the page does a partial postback, then I get a javascript error: "Object required". I tried debugging the javascript, but couldn't get a call stack. If I remove the UpdatePanel, the LinkButtons do a full postback, and they disappear from the page.   I have question about my problem. Thru manustrip in form1 i have made new form2 when i click on a right option. This form is for deleting data in access database if you pick in combobox ID of row it deletes the whole row wher is ID 4 or somethig else...   I'm just starting a new project and I am getting some really weird stuff happening. ASP.NET 3.5, VS2008. I've tried rebuild, close VS, delete everything and get from svn again but I cannot understand why the repeater in the following is null on page_load. I know this is going to be a headslapping moment. Help me out?   I'm trying to match a series of xml tags that are comma separated, and to then apply an xslt transformation on the whole group of nodes plus text. For example, given the following partial XML: <p>Some text here <xref id="1">1</xref>, <xref id="2">2</xref>, <xref id="3">3</xref>. </p> I would like to end up with: <p>Some text here ^1,2,3.</p> A much messier alternate would also be acceptable at this point: <p>Some text here ¹^,²^,³.</p> I have the transformation to go from a single xref to a sup: <xsl:template match="xref""> ^{<xsl:apply-templates/>} </xsl:template> But I'm at a loss as to how to match a group of nodes separated by commas.   Hi, I've got an installer with a custom action project. I want the action to fire at install. The action fires, when I write something to the event log, it works perfectly. But I really need to debug the file since the action is quite complicated.
