• I want to build a Google-friendly web app, where should I start?

  I have only very basic experience with HTML/CSS and have quite a bit of experience with testing software and web apps from a consumer perspective. I'd love to launch a web application that plays nicely with Google services, similar to some of the apps you'd find on the Google Apps Marketplace, such as ManyMoon, time to note, Socialwok, etc. I'm a huge Google fan and would like to build something that's well integrated with other Google services. If you were a total beginner and wanted to build a complex app like one of examples above (project management, CRM, etc), where would you start? If you worked your ass off 18 hours a day, 24/7, how fast could you do it? I've dabbled into various languages and development frameworks, and read about which apps are using what languages but it's hard to figure out what would be most beneficial to jump into. Ruby on Rails, PHP, Google Web Toolkit, AppEngine. The list goes on and on. I want to be able to build and launch my own scalable web app. Thanks.

The whole thing is fine if I don't have the last declaration, '{ 0, 36, D3DDECLTYPE_FLOAT3, D3DDECLMETHOD_DEFAULT, D3DDECLUSAGE_TANGENT, 0 },' in it and the CloneMesh function does not return a FAIL. I've also tried using different declarations such as D3DDECLUSAGE_TEXCOORD and that has worked fine, returning a size of 48. Is there something specific about D3DDECLUSAGE_TANGENT I don't know? I'm at a complete loss as to why this isn't working...

• Which is faster: Appropriate data input or appropriate data structure?

  I have a dataset whose columns look like this: Consumer ID | Product ID | Time Period | Product Score 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 2 | 1 | 2 | 3 and so on. As part of a program (written in C) I need to process the product scores given by all consumers for a particular product and time period combination for all possible combinations. Suppose that there are 3 products and 2 time periods. Then I need to process the product scores for all possible combinations as shown below: Product ID | Time Period 1 | 1 1 | 2 2 | 1 2 | 2 3 | 1 3 | 2 I will need to process the data along the above lines lots of times ( 10k) and the dataset is fairly large (e.g., 48k consumers, 100 products, 24 time periods etc). So speed is an issue. I came up with two ways to process the data and am wondering which is the faster approach or perhaps it does not matter much? (speed matters but not at the cost of undue maintenance/readability): Sort the data on product id and time period and then loop through the data to extract data for all possible combinations. Store the consumer ids of all consumers who provided product scores for a particular combination of product id and time period and process the data accordingly. Any thoughts? Any other way to speed up the processing? Thanks

• Setting initial state of a JSF component to invalid

  Hi there I have a small JSF application where the user is required to enter some data about themselves. For each component on the page that has required="true" I want to show an icon depending if there is data in the field or not. My problem is that when the page is initially shown all fields are valid, even if they do not have any data in them. So my question is how I can set a component to be invalid based on if there is data in the field or not? After a submit of the page (or after the component loses focus) the icon is shown properly, it is only on the initial page load I have a problem. • Single Loader to multiple Sprite Possible?

  I've looked in various resources regarding this topic, and it seems to me that I need a Loader for every Sprite which contains an image file (png). I'm trying to make a Tile Rendering System, and have created a grid of X by Y sprites, but all of them actually reference the same image file. Is there any other way to do this? • long startup time...Need help

  My app is all done and working great. So now I ran it on a old iPhone and the app takes 17.3 seconds to start!?!? i spent a lot of time looking into it and i found that the reason it is taking so long to load is i have a lot of views and each view has a png background image. All my views and made in IB and in my code: #import "MyTestAppDelegate.h" #import "MyTestViewController.h" @implementation MyTestAppDelegate @synthesize window; @synthesize viewController; - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication *)application { // Override point for customization after app launch [window addSubview:viewController.view]; [window makeKeyAndVisible]; } - (void)dealloc { [viewController release]; [window release]; [super dealloc]; } @end At the end of the code where is says: [window addSubview:viewController.view]; the app seems to be loading all the views in the nib at the same time. All the png's from all the views are about 12mb. There is no need for the app to load all the views at the same time during startup. Is there a way i can only load the first "home" view at startup? (All the views are part of the same nib.)

• How to style "form" field labels in Windows Phone 7?

  Is there any standards guidance on how to style field labels next to form fields in windows phone 7 silverlight applications? For example, let's say I have a StackPanel with the TextBlock label and a TextBox for data entry. Currently I am using the default TextBlock Margin included in the PhoneTextSubtleStyle ("12,0,12,0"), and using a Margin of "0,-12,0,0" to push the TextBox up closer to the label: <StackPanel HorizontalAlignment="Left"> <TextBlock VerticalAlignment="Center" Text="Name" Style="{StaticResource PhoneTextSubtleStyle}" /> <TextBox Text="{Binding ItemName, Mode=TwoWay}" TextChanged="TextBox_TextChanged" VerticalAlignment="Center" Width="433" Margin="0,-12,0,0" /> </StackPanel> Note that the TextBox seems to have some internal padding of 12 pixels to the left and right, so that the TextBlock label and the TextBox control visually line up perfectly on the left. The problem is, I see existing apps with widely varying conventions for field label styling. Some do not do the negative margin adjustment, like I have above. Some don't. Some appear to override the label TextBlock Margin so that it is indented an additional 12 pixels on the left (i.e. "24,0,12,0" instead of the default "12,0,12,0"). Some apps put the labels to the left of the fields themselves (I hate that). Is there some standard design guidance on field labels in Windows Phone 7? I read through the design template PDF and could only determine that the field labels should be upper case on the first word (preferably only one word labels), and should NOT have a colon at the end. I didn't see anything with regards to margins or alignment between the label and the field.

However I just realize it is quite tricky, because I want the user select for example tag1, tag2 and tag3, with the mouse. Instead now they disappear when the mouse rolls out from the puppet image.   In my web browser userscript project I need to replace just one text node without affecting the other HTML elements under the same parent node as the text. And I need to replace it with more than one node: <div id="target"> some text<img src="/image.png"> </div> Needs to become: <div id="target"> <a href="#">mixed</a> text <a href="#">and</a> HTML<img src="/image.png"> </div> I know jQuery doesn't have a whole lot of support for text nodes. I know I could use direct DOM calls instead of jQuery. And I know I could just do something like $('#target').html(my new stuff + stuff I don't want to change). What I'd like to ask the experts here is, Is there a most idiomatic jQuery way to do this?

  Whenever I input an age of 65 or less, I get a number somewhere less than 2,100,000. However, when I input an age of 68 or higher, the result is instantly put at 18,446,744,071,590,568,320, which is the maximum value for uint64_t. I have no idea why there is this jump in results. • jQuery UI Calendar displays too large, would like the demo size???

  So I downloaded a custom themed UI for jQuery and added the calendar control to my sight (Example: link text). In the example it shows/displays the size I would like but on my webpage it's about twice the size. why??? I do have a ton of other CSS but I don't have control over the look and feel of the page (Can't touch current CSS, MEH!!). Is there a way to get the demo look on my site? • Help adding a backgroundView to UITableViewCell

  I'm getting really desperate trying to add a UIImageView to UITableViewCell.backgroundView. All my efforts have resulted in this crappy rendering: It looks like the cell's label's white background is sitting on top of cell's background and covering portions of it. I tried setting the label's background color to clear, or some other color and it does not have any event. It is always white. The reason I know it's the text label's background causing this white area is that if I don't do [cell setText:@"Cell text here"]; the white area is gone and I see just the cell's background image. Here's the code that I'm using.   Hi, I have been wrestling with Amazon's CloudWatch API with limited success. Does anyone know of any good resources (other than amazon's api docs) for using the APIs. I have tried to run them using the PHP library for CloudWatch but get nothing but error codes. The issue is that I need to break this down by where the user registered from (e.g. website, wap site, or a mobile application). the resulting output data should look like this... [date] [num_reg_website] [num_reg_wap_site] [num_reg_mobileapp] 1 FEB 2010,24,35,64 2 FEB 2010,23,85,48 3 FEB 2010,29,37,79 etc... The source table is as follows... • jquery simplemodal close wont work in firefox

• How can I quickly parse large (>10GB) files?

  Hi - I have to process text files 10-20GB in size of the format: field1 field2 field3 field4 field5 I would like to parse the data from each line of field2 into one of several files; the file this gets pushed into is determined line-by-line by the value in field4. There are 25 different possible values in field2 and hence 25 different files the data can get parsed into. I have tried using Perl (slow) and awk (faster but still slow) - does anyone have any suggestions or pointers toward alternative approaches? FYI here is the awk code I was trying to use; note I had to revert to going through the large file 25 times because I wasn't able to keep 25 files open at once in awk: chromosomes=(1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25) for chr in ${chromosomes[@]} do awk < my_in_file_here -v pat="$chr" '{if ($4 == pat) for (i = $2; i <= $2+52; i++) print i}' >> my_out_file_"$chr".query done

  I set up the SimpleModal plugin to work from our Ad server(Real 24/7). Essentially, attempting to make an interstitial ad. • Yet another question about C++ books..

  Intro rant Hey all, so after just over a year of browsing I decided it's time to ask a question for myself, it's sadly similar to many that have been asked before. I'm 18, am studying towards a BSc in Comp SCi and have been programming 'on and off' for about 6 years now, after wrestling with C++ for a bit then stumbling upon (and reading cover to cover) "Programming: Principles and Practice Using C++" by the great man himself I feel pretty comfortable with C++, I am almost finished writing my first open source program in C++ (a mediawiki parser, http://code.google.com/p/apertium-mediawiki/). I have decided I want to really get to know the power of C++, get familiar with some of its 'darker' corners and also delve into game programming, at this point I am rather keen on the book "Essential 3D Game Programming: with C++ and OpenGL" (released 24 may '10), I would also like to get 1 or 2 other books on 'general C++' that I can read cover to cover during my spare time. At this point I am pretty open to suggestions I would like something in the intermediate/advanced zone, some books I am rather keen on include: The C++ Standard Library: A tutorial and reference, C++ Template, the complete guide, and Modern C++ Design: Generic Programming and Design Patterns Applied Thanks in advance.
