• Nashorn in the Twitterverse, Continued

  After doing the Twitter example, it seemed reasonable to try graphing the result with JavaFX.  At this time the Nashorn project doesn't have an JavaFX shell, so we have to go through some hoops to create an JavaFX application.  I thought showing you some of those hoops might give you some idea about what you can do mixing Nashorn and Java (we'll add a JavaFX shell to the todo list.) Okay, with the meat out of the way, let's talk about the hoops. When working with JavaFX, you start with a main subclass of javafx.application.Application.  This class handles the initialization of the JavaFX libraries and the event processing.  This is what I used for this example; import java.io.IOException; import java.io.InputStream; import java.io.InputStreamReader; import javafx.application.Application; import javafx.stage.Stage; import javax.script.ScriptEngine; import javax.script.ScriptEngineManager; import javax.script.ScriptException; public class TrendingMain extends Application { private static final ScriptEngineManager MANAGER = new ScriptEngineManager(); private final ScriptEngine engine = MANAGER.getEngineByName("nashorn"); private Trending trending; public static void main(String[] args) { launch(args); } @Override public void start(Stage stage) throws Exception { trending = (Trending) load("Trending.js"); trending.start(stage); } @Override public void stop() throws Exception { trending.stop(); } private Object load(String script) throws IOException, ScriptException { try (final InputStream is = TrendingMain.class.getResourceAsStream(script)) { return engine.eval(new InputStreamReader(is, "utf-8")); } } } To initialize Nashorn, we use JSR-223's javax.script.  private static final ScriptEngineManager MANAGER = new ScriptEngineManager(); private final ScriptEngine engine = MANAGER.getEngineByName("nashorn"); This code sets up an instance of the Nashorn engine for evaluating scripts. The  load method reads a script into memory and then gets engine to eval that script.  Note, that load also returns the result of the eval. Now for the fun part.  There are several different approaches we could use to communicate between the Java main and the script.  In this example we'll use a Java interface.  The JavaFX main needs to do at least start and stop, so the following will suffice as an interface; public interface Trending {     public void start(Stage stage) throws Exception;     public void stop() throws Exception; } At the end of the example's script we add; (function newTrending() {     return new Packages.Trending() {         start: function(stage) {             var data = getTrendingData();             graph(stage, data);             stage.show();         },         stop: function() {         }     } })(); which instantiates a new subclass instance of Trending and overrides the start and stop methods.  The result of this function call is what is returned to main via the eval. trending = (Trending) load("Trending.js"); To recap, the script Trending.js contains functions getTrendingData, graph and newTrending, plus the call at the end to newTrending.  Back in the Java code, we cast the result of the eval (call to newTrending) to Trending, thus, we end up with an object that we can then use to call back into the script.  trending.start(stage); Voila. ?

• Android JSON HttpClient to send data to PHP server with HttpResponse

  I am currently trying to send some data from and Android application to a php server (both are controlled by me). There is alot of data collected on a form in the app, this is written to the database. This all works. I have tried changing the doPost function a little (this is actually a little better, as I said I have alot to send, basically 3 of the same form with different data - so I create 3 JSONObjects, one for each form entry - the entries come from the DB instead of the static example I am using).   I want to enable form based authentication by using database as realm but I'm always getting that message whenever I try to authenticate as Tomcat manager in Tomcat 6. I have already created a table user_name and user_roles and mapped the username(blue) to admin and manager as role in user_roles table in mysql, but still I'm unable to authenticate and enable form based authentication. • iPhone Development: CoreLocation and MapKit

  How bad is it to use Location Manager to retrieve the location information when MapView.showUserLocation is also TRUE? I have a situation where i want to show the blue dot to indicate the user's current location, and i want to record the user's current location after some time interval. Having said that, there may be situations where the user's current location is now being shown, but i still want to get the user's current location. I think i'll have to use the Location Manager in my controller class, but setting showUserLocation = YES would mean that i'll be draining more battery since two Location Managers are working at the same time? Is this assumption correct?

• Why does CLLocationManager returns null locations on the iphone SDK 4 beta in the Simulator?

  Hi everyone, I have this piece of code: - (void)locationManager:(CLLocationManager *)manager didUpdateToLocation:(CLLocation *)newLocation fromLocation:(CLLocation *)oldLocation { NSLog(@"Manager did update location!!"); self.currentLocation = newLocation.description; } I have this code inside a class that conforms to the CLLocationManagerDelegate. I tested earlier in sdk 3.0 and works nice (on both simulator and device). I'm testing this class on the SDK 4, in the simulator, but it gives null as a newLocation. I can't even get the NSLog for the first call. I checked other app where I use the location framework and it doesn't work either. I implemented the locationManager:didFailWithError: message also, wich is never called. Can anyone please confirm that the simulator can't do any CLLocationManager capabilities? (a link where the bug is reported as a known issue will be awesome). Is there a way to fix this? Thanks in advance.

• Rails - MS-SQL Server problems (unixODBC, FreeTDS) on Mac 10.6

  Followed the instructions on the Rails wiki and have had success connecting to SQL Server 2000 with TSQL -- both with DSN-less and DNS connections. I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.3. Wiki instructions here. Installed ruby-odbc, dbi (0.4.0), dbd-odbc (2.4.5), activerecord-sqlserver-adapter (2.3.5). In my database.yml (Rails 2.3.6): development: adapter: sqlserver mode: ODBC dsn: 'DRIVER=/usr/local/lib/libtdsodbc.so;TDS_Version=8.0;SERVER=mssql01.discountasp.net;DATABASE=DB_164368_dmusd;Port=1433;uid=DB_164368_dmusd_user;pwd=Schools77;' This yields the following error: ODBC::Error: S1090 (0) [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Invalid string or buffer length When I attempt to use a DSN connection, I get the following error: ODBC::Error: IM002 (0) [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found, and no default driver specified I have in fact verified that the FreeTDS driver (libtdsodbc.so) is installed and the path correct. • Problem with room/screen/menu controller in python game: old rooms are not removed from memory

  I'm literally banging my head against a wall here (as in, yes, physically, at my current location, I am damaging my cranium). Basically, I've got a Python/Pygame game with some typical game "rooms", or "screens." EG title screen, high scores screen, and the actual game room. Something bad is happening when I switch between rooms: the old room (and its various items) are not removed from memory, or from my event listener. Not only that, but every time I go back to a certain room, my number of event listeners increases, as well as the RAM being consumed! (So if I go back and forth between the title screen and the "game room", for instance, the number of event listeners and the memory usage just keep going up and up. The main issue is that all the event listeners start to add up and really drain the CPU. I'm new to Python, and don't know if I'm doing something obviously wrong here, or what. I will love you so much if you can help me with this! Below is the relevant source code.   Hi, i'm making an app that needs to be up and running at all times. (24/7) I'm not very expirienced with services, but I read on the internet that services can be made uncolasble by setting their "onclose" property to false. I have got the service monitoring my app, and the service can't be closed directly from the task manager services window... but, when I click "go to process" task manager leads me to the process the service spawned. From there I can close the process and instantly close the service. Since I don't have much expirience with services i'm wondering, is this behavior normal? If not, how to make the service unstopable?

  I am working with network request - response in Objective-C. There is something with asynchronous model that I don't understand. In summary, I have a view that will show my statuses from 2 social networks: Twitter and Facebook. When I clicked refresh, it will call a model manager. That model manager will call 2 service helpers to request for latest items. When 2 service helpers receive data, it will pass back to model manager and this model will add all data into a sorted array. What I don't understand here is that : when response from social networks come back, how many threads will handle the response. From my understanding about multithreading and networking (in Java), there must have 2 threads handle 2 responses and those 2 threads will execute the code to add the responses to the array. So, it can have race condition and the program can go wrong right? Is it the correct working model of iphone objective-C? Or they do it in a different way that it will never have race condition and we don't have to care about locking, synchronize?   I am currently upgrading an installation of Tridion from 5.3 to 2011 starting almost from scratch (aside from migrating the database), brand new virtual servers. I just want to ask for some advice on my current server setup... a sanity check. All servers are running Windows Server 2008. The pages on our website are all classic ASP. Database SQL Server cluster. The 5.3 database has been migrated using the DatabaseManager. This is pretty standard and works well (in test anyway). Content Manager A single server to run the Content Manager and the Publisher. There are around 10 people using it at any one time so not under a particularly heavy load. Content Data Store Filesystem located somewhere on the network. One directory for live and one for staging. Content Delivery Two servers (cd1 and cd2) each with the the following server roles installed. cd1 writes to a filesystem content data store for the live website, cd2 writes to the content data store for the staging website. Presentation Two public facing web servers (web1 and web2) serving both the live and staging websites. The web servers read directly from the content data store as its a filesystem. Each of the web servers have the Content Delivery Server installed so that I can use dynamic linking (and other features?). I've so far set up everything but the web servers. Any thoughts? edit Thanks to Ram S who linked me to a decent walkthrough, upvoted. I suppose I should have posed some questions as I didn't really ask a question. I guess I'm a little confused over the content deliver aspect. I have the Content Delivery split in two separate parts. cd1 and cd2 do the work of shifting information from the Content Manager to the Staging/Live web directories. web1 and web2 should do the work of serving the web pages to the outside world and will interact with the content data store (file system). Is this a correct setup? I need some parts of the Content Delivery on my web servers right? Theoretically I could get rid of the cd1 and cd2 servers and use web1 and web2 to do the deployment right? But I suspect this will put the web servers under unnecessary strain should there ever be a big publish. I've been reading the 2011 Installation Manual, Content Delivery section, and I'm finding it quite hard to get my head around!

  Hi guys. I (sadly) have to deploy a rails application on Windows XP which has to connect to Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Surfing in the web there are a lot of hits for connect from Linux to SQL Server, but cannot find out how to do it from Windows. Basically I followed these steps: Install dbi gem Install activerecord-sql-server-adapter gem My database.yml now looks like this: development: adapter: sqlserver mode: odbc dsn: test_dj host: HOSTNAME\SQLEXPRESS database: test_dj username: guest password: guest But I'm unable to connect it. When I run rake db:migrate I get IM002 (0) [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified I'm not a Windows user, so cannot understand really well the meaning of dsn element or so. Does someone have an idea how to solve this? • Winforms - a strange problem a with simple binding

  Hi Guys, It's hard for me to clearly describe my problem but I'll try. I have a UserControl1 which contains UserControl2 which contains several WinForms controls (most of them DevExpress). I do simple binding to these controls to my datatable fields. So far everything works fine. When I move the focus to a record in the table (by navigating in a grid rows for example) the binding works great, the concurrenmcy manager moves the cursor and everything reflects right in the bounded controls. The problem starts when I add new user UserControl3 above UserControl2 and make UserControl2.Visible = false. Now UserControl3 is shown and UserControl2 exists but not shown. Now when I set UserControl2.Visible = true to show it again the simple binding stops working! I navigate in the grid but either the ConcurrencyManager stops working or the simple binding becomes disconnected. My question: Are there any known issues/ best practices with the binding & concurrency manager? Thanks a lot, Adi Barda

  Hi All, My application uses Core Location in three different views. It's working perfectly. In my first view, I subclass the CLLocationManager and use protocol methods for location updates to my calling class. Before I install the framework and code in my other classes, I was wondering: Is the protocol method the best way? What happens to the Core Location execution if the user exits the view or quits the app while it's trying to get a location fix? Is the location task terminated with the GPS system turned off immediately? If the user simply switches to another view, is it OK to assume that I can start Core Location in the next view without regard to the last? Where should the first update location call be placed. Should the application delegate instantiate the CLLocation Manager class using protocol so that it can update any of the views chosen or should each class instantiate the manager. But I have removed all cells in atableview before call 'reloadData'.   Till now I've been exporting data INTO the SQL Server CE database, but now in SSIS I'm attempting to source data that was inserted in a previous step of the import. The SSIS fails during validation with the following error Error: Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.DtsCouldNotCreateManagedConnectionException: Could not create a managed connection manager. I am attempting to use the ADO NET Source that connects to the Data Source using the Microsoft.SqlServerCe.Client.3.5 provider (i.e. ADO.NET connection manager). I CAN preview the data in the ADO.NET Source editor, but the package validation fails due to the above error.

• Using Add-on SDK to add toolbar buttons? Integrating XUL and Add-on SDK for Firefox Add-ons?

  I have already coded most of a Firefox add-on using the Add-on SDK API. I am now discovering that Add-on SDK might not be powerful enough for my purposes. I need two things: A drop down button in the toolbar next to the location bar. To modify the add-ons manager in firefox It is truly disappointing, but I don't believe either of these is possible with the Add-on SDK. First of all, I understand there is a widget module in the Add-on SDK API. But this only allows me to add a simple icon or label to the awkward add-on bar. What if I need to add a nicer button like the one next to the location bar for Firebug or Greasemonkey? As for modifying the add-ons manager in firefox, I have tried Nickolay Ponomarev's XUL with the Add-on SDK without any success whatsoever. If anyone knows how to get this working and can point me in the right direction that would be extremely helpful (cfx init --template xul doesn't do anything the regular SDK does when I try it)
