• About partition sizes

  I am going to install Ubuntu on a new computer, but I'm not quite sure how big each partition should be. If I create only root, home and swap partitions, on what partition will programs be installed? Will they go to /home or to root? Basically does it make sense for instance to have following partitions: / - 6GB /home - 80GB /swap - 4GB Is 6GB large enough for my root partition? Also are these 3 partitions a good choice, or is there a better configuration? I have at the moment 3 operating systems installed, and I do make changes quite often.

• How to deal with "software end-of-life" situations?

  When a vendor declares that they no longer intend to provide any support or services to a piece of software (and stated the intent to exit the business - offering no upgrade paths), and stated that customers must pay a nominal fee in order to have the existing data exported, what kind of recourse do programmers/customers have? Things I can think of: Need to purchase spare hardware and set up a spare environment on which the software can continue to operate. Various data export methods which do not require vendor involvement. (For example, screen scraping, printing to image followed by re-scanning, etc) Parallel systems where staff will duplicate the old data into a new system manually or semi-automatically Legal means, in case the vendor is in financial trouble Any other ideas? Assuming that there is no "circumvention" involved (no DRM, no DMCA), is data recovery or reverse engineering legal/acceptable?

  I am a senior in high school majoring in Computer Science next fall. This summer, I would like to intern at a company relevant to my interests of investment banking and software engineering. What would be some possible ways to find openings? How should I contact them? (E-mail, phone, etc.) Should I prepare and submit a CV? I feel it might be a little dull as it would have no experience or references. After contacting someone about an internship, should I follow up, or just wait for them to contact me? Is there anything else I should do or be aware of?

• Reasons for Pair Programming

  I've worked in a few shops where management has passed the idea of pair programming either to me or another manager/developer, and I can't get behind it at all. From a developer stand-point I can't find a reason why moving to this coding style would be beneficial, nor as a manager of a small team have I seen any benefit. I understand that it helps on basic syntax errors and can be helpful if you need to hash something out, but managers that are out of the programming loop seem to keep seeing it as a way of keeping their designers from going to Facebook or Reddit than as a design tool. As someone close to the development floor that apparently can't quite understand from a book tossed my way or a wiki page on the subject... from a high level management position, what are the benefits of Pair Programming when dealing with Scrum or Agile environments?

  Well basicly lately I have been having lag problems with 12.10. I will post my specs, but before the update to 12.10, it said that I had intel graphics. Now it says I have Gallium. • Learning the basics

  I am a Linux server administrator first and foremost... Having said that, I have been asked by a former high school teacher of mine to teach students a bit about programming. Like any Linux administrator, I know my fair share of Python and Bash. The problem is that I know NOTHING about the lower level stuff like "machine code" and compilation. The main purpose of this series is to teach programming, not computer science, so I don't need a graduate degree's level of knowledge for this, they will be learning Python first and foremost. However, I would like to learn enough to at least broach the subject with them, any ideas where I can learn that kind of stuff relatively quickly?

• Do big domain sellers ever stop renewing their domains? [on hold]

  There are many companies out there who register tons of domains that they have no plans to use except for trying to sell them for a ridiculously high price. One domain name in particular was registered in year 2000 and hasn't been in use since then other than as a temporary redirect website for about a month (when checking web.archive.org). It makes me furious that this behaviour has not been outlawed yet. I wonder if it's even worth to wait for a .com domain to expire anymore? Do you have any success stories to share?

  this question is for LibGdx geeks. I want to make transparent screen in my game. For example, when level completes I want a new transparent screen pop up and show player's high score, buttons to navigate on next level etc like in angry birds kind of screen. This type of screen can also use, when user click on pause button, to show pause screen. Please guide me to design this kind of screen. Or if I am going wrong to make transparent screens for this kind of situation. Please guide me for better one.

• Is medium-resolution a good middle ground for web images?

  I'm used to thinking of hi-res 300 ppi and above, and lo-res, 72 or 96. But today I got an image that was 240 ppi, and da boss wanted as high res as possible. It was a huge file, but when I resized down to 700px wide in PS, optimized jpeg with no compression, without changing the res the result was a 129KB file that looks decent on most browsers (at least my box...who knows about old monitors, etc.) Did I miss a conference when I was on a break? Are others doing medium-res?

• I'm trying to install postgresql on 12.04, and it's just not working

  I've got a new installation and I'm trying to get Postgresql working. The database was installed and I started a restoration from a dump on another machine, but that ran into problems because I had forgotten to install the "contrib" package. I used "pg_dropcluster" to drop the old cluster so I could start from scratch, and that's when things went weird. The first manifestation of this was that /etc/postgresql was just empty. I uninstalled the postgresql package and reinstalled, several times, to no avail. Is there something I can do to figure out why apt is confused here? I've done this many times on many systems and never seen anything like this happen.

• How can I turn off calculated columns in an Excel table from a macro using VBA? [migrated]

  I am working on a macro that inserts formulas into a cell in an Excel table. The Excel table does the automatic filling of columns and fills all the cells in that column with the formula, but all I want is one cell to have the formula. I cannot just turn off automatic formula for tables as I need to have other people use this worksheet on their systems. Is there a way to turn off the automatic filling of formulas in a table using VBA in a macro? It just needs to be temporary: I just want to turn it off, put in my formulas, then turn it back on.

  I have been working on my personal website for sometime, I think I have been doing a good technical job, but, unfortunately I did a terrible job while structuring the website because I didn't care about the keywords I was going to use. Although it is my personal website, I'd like to mention the main objective is the blog of the website, so I'd like that the keywords were related to the content that it is in the blog, at present google webmaster tools is displaying a lot of keywords that has nothing to do with the content of the website, and some SEO reporting websites such as woorank says that the keyword optimization of the website is awful, So I have 3 questions: How to choose, set and use keywords while structuring a website? OPTIONAL: which are all the methods and sources used by search engines to collect the keywords of a website? there are some high profile websites that aren't optimized on this as well, should I concerned about this anyway?, is there anything more important that I should be concerned about?   I am developing my first Cocos2d iPhone/iPad game that includes quite a few sprites, I would need approximately 80 different. As this is for both normal and HD displays I have 2x of each sprite. I am using TexturePacker to optimize the thing. I would like to ask if there are any rules-of-thumb, tricks, ideas etc. to adjust to in regards to size of content, quality and how you maintain high-quality HD-based graphics due to its size vs. the device memory sizes? Also, is it a good idea to only have one copy of the sprites and scale it using code?

• Develop open-source library and get donations for it?

  I have a nice open-source library in mind to write. It would take a few months to develop properly and I would need to stop supporting myself though other projects. Could anybody share experiences and best-known-methods to get some sort of financial support through the Internet whilst developing free, open-source code? Or, phrased more directly: which systems apart from "PayPal" are in use by programmers to get donations for open-source code? Provide a list. Optionally, sort the list as if it were a recommendation in descending order of positive experiences made with each system. Optionally, share a tidbit of your success story getting this kind of financial support. Optionally: give an indication as to how much money can be made that way? (I heard Vim's author could support himself just with donations at some point?)

• Ubuntu 12.04 lts cannot build a wireless connection

  Hi i just got a new notebook and it came with ubuntu 12.04 lts operation system. But it can't make a wireless connection. I plugged in my Ethernet cable and i can reach the Internet with it but I need wireless connection so much. This is the first time I'm using ubuntu so i'm really confused. I can see wireless networks (including mine) but i cannot use them. It seems like it's establishing a connection but soon it gives up. Please help, I don't have much time for this and I do not have any idea about operation systems.

  I stumbled several times over D and really asked myself why it isn't more popular. D is a systems programming language. Its focus is on combining the power and high performance of C and C++ with the programmer productivity of modern languages like Ruby and Python. Special attention is given to the needs of quality assurance, documentation, management, portability and reliability. Do you think it has got a future? I really would like to try it but somehow the thought that I'm the only person on earth programming D discourages me to try it.
