  • Practical guide to programming paradigms ?

    - by Pierre
I think I might be misunderstanding the whole thing and I am looking for some programming wisdom. When faced with a programming challenge, I feel the most important question is "which programming paradigm(s) are better suited to handle it, and how to apply them". A distant second is "which language to use". Yet it seems that most of the programming related content I stumble upon on the Internet has it exactly backwards and focuses mostly on the language choice. An object-oriented solution is fundamentaly the same, whether it's implemented in c++, Java or PHP... So where is the paradigm centered content? Where is the "practical guide to programming paradigms and implementations" and other literature helping bringing real-world and programming concepts together? Note: I already know about "Programming Paradigms for Dummies: What Every Programmer Should Know" from Peter Van Roy.

  • ORA-22835 using JPA (Buffer too small)

    - by Kenneth
I am trying to persist an Entity with a @Lob annotated String field. The content of that fiels if bigger than the 40k buffer size limit. The first problem I had was related to the setString method used internally by the JPA implementation (Hibernate in my case) and the Oracle JDBC Driver. This problem was solved adding <property name="hibernate.connection.SetBigStringTryClob" value="true"/> to my persistence.xml file. Then, the error changed to a ORA-22835 error (the buffer is too small). ¿Is there any way that JPA solves this problem without going to a low-level implementation? ¿Any suggestions?

  • Adding C++ Object to Objective-C Class

    - by Winder
    I'm trying to mix C++ and Objective-C, I've made it most of the way but would like to have a single interface class between the Objective-C and C++ code. Therefore I would like to have a persistent C++ object in the ViewController interface. This fails by forbidding the declaration of 'myCppFile' with no type: #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> #import "GLView.h" #import "myCppFile.h" @interface GLViewController : UIViewController <GLViewDelegate> { myCppFile cppobject; } @end However this works just fine in the .mm implementation file (It doesn't work because I want cppobject to persist between calls) #import "myCppFile.h" @implementation GLViewController - (void)drawView:(UIView *)theView { myCppFile cppobject; cppobject.draw(); }

I'm working on my own colour scheme for displaying code in visual studio. I can't find some text section name so I don't know where to change it's colour. :( Can anybody help me and tell me where do I find them, I mean what is the name of the following sections: 1)The grey one (documentation tag value and it's quote) - picture below 2)The olive colour: header of a asp.net in vb language document. - <% and underline. (picture below) *Here is second hyperlink but without the begining regarding this supid forum rules. To write my code I use vb.net language.

  • ASP.NET MVC2: Can you get ModelMetadata.ContainerType from within a collection?

    - by CodeSponge
I'm trying to call DisplayFor and DisplayForModel to iterate an IEnumerable< with various element types from within a view. I have Templates defined for each element/Model type. What I would like to do is check the ViewData.ModelMetadata.ContainerType from within the Template so that Template can determine if it was called as part of a collection. A simple example: Index1.aspx: To render a collection of Foos. <%@ Page Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<IEnumerable<Foo>>" %> <asp:Content ContentPlaceHolderID="MainPlaceHolder" runat="server"> <ul><%:Html.DisplayForModel()%></ul> </asp:Content> Index2.aspx: To render a Foo. <%@ Page Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<Foo>" %> <asp:Content ContentPlaceHolderID="MainPlaceHolder" runat="server"> <%:Html.DisplayForModel()%> </asp:Content> Shared\DisplayTemplates\Foo.ascx: A context aware Template for Foo. <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<Foo>" %> <% var tag = typeof(IEnumerable).IsAssignableFrom(ViewData.ModelMetaData.ContainerType) ? "li" : "div"; %> <<%:tag%>><%:Model.Name%></<%:tag%>> The problem with this example is that ViewData.ModelMetaData.ContainerType is null in the Template when resolved though Index1.aspx. From what I've read on Brad Wilson post and others it has to do with the use of IEnumerable and its being an interface. Is there a way to insure that the ContainerType is set? Perhaps by creating a ModelMetadataProviders? I looked into that breifly but it appears the ContainerType value is determined before and then passed to the Provider. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Scala n00b: Critique my code

    - by Peter
G'day everyone, I'm a Scala n00b (but am experienced with other languages) and am learning the language as I find time - very much enjoying it so far! Usually when learning a new language the first thing I do is implement Conway's Game of Life, since it's just complex enough to give a good sense of the language, but small enough in scope to be able to whip up in a couple of hours (most of which is spent wrestling with syntax). Anyhoo, having gone through this exercise with Scala I was hoping the Scala gurus out there might take a look at the code I've ended up with and provide feedback on it. I'm after anything - algorithmic improvements (particularly concurrent solutions!), stylistic improvements, alternative APIs or language constructs, disgust at the length of my function names - whatever feedback you've got, I'm keen to hear it! You should be able to run the following script via "scala GameOfLife.scala" - by default it will run a 20x20 board with a single glider on it - please feel free to experiment. // CONWAY'S GAME OF LIFE (SCALA) abstract class GameOfLifeBoard(val aliveCells : Set[Tuple2[Int, Int]]) { // Executes a "time tick" - returns a new board containing the next generation def tick : GameOfLifeBoard // Is the board empty? def empty : Boolean = aliveCells.size == 0 // Is the given cell alive? protected def alive(cell : Tuple2[Int, Int]) : Boolean = aliveCells contains cell // Is the given cell dead? protected def dead(cell : Tuple2[Int, Int]) : Boolean = !alive(cell) } class InfiniteGameOfLifeBoard(aliveCells : Set[Tuple2[Int, Int]]) extends GameOfLifeBoard(aliveCells) { // Executes a "time tick" - returns a new board containing the next generation override def tick : GameOfLifeBoard = new InfiniteGameOfLifeBoard(nextGeneration) // The next generation of this board protected def nextGeneration : Set[Tuple2[Int, Int]] = aliveCells flatMap neighbours filter shouldCellLiveInNextGeneration // Should the given cell should live in the next generation? protected def shouldCellLiveInNextGeneration(cell : Tuple2[Int, Int]) : Boolean = (alive(cell) && (numberOfAliveNeighbours(cell) == 2 || numberOfAliveNeighbours(cell) == 3)) || (dead(cell) && numberOfAliveNeighbours(cell) == 3) // The number of alive neighbours for the given cell protected def numberOfAliveNeighbours(cell : Tuple2[Int, Int]) : Int = aliveNeighbours(cell) size // Returns the alive neighbours for the given cell protected def aliveNeighbours(cell : Tuple2[Int, Int]) : Set[Tuple2[Int, Int]] = aliveCells intersect neighbours(cell) // Returns all neighbours (whether dead or alive) for the given cell protected def neighbours(cell : Tuple2[Int, Int]) : Set[Tuple2[Int, Int]] = Set((cell._1-1, cell._2-1), (cell._1, cell._2-1), (cell._1+1, cell._2-1), (cell._1-1, cell._2), (cell._1+1, cell._2), (cell._1-1, cell._2+1), (cell._1, cell._2+1), (cell._1+1, cell._2+1)) // Information on where the currently live cells are protected def xVals = aliveCells map { cell => cell._1 } protected def xMin = (xVals reduceLeft (_ min _)) - 1 protected def xMax = (xVals reduceLeft (_ max _)) + 1 protected def xRange = xMin until xMax + 1 protected def yVals = aliveCells map { cell => cell._2 } protected def yMin = (yVals reduceLeft (_ min _)) - 1 protected def yMax = (yVals reduceLeft (_ max _)) + 1 protected def yRange = yMin until yMax + 1 // Returns a simple graphical representation of this board override def toString : String = { var result = "" for (y <- yRange) { for (x <- xRange) { if (alive (x,y)) result += "# " else result += ". • Building big, immutable objects without constructors having long parameter lists

    - by Malax
Hi StackOverflow! I have some big (more than 3 fields) Objects which can and should be immutable. Every time I run into that case i tend to create constructor abominations with long parameter lists. It doesn't feel right, is hard to use and readability suffers. It is even worse if the fields are some sort of collection type like lists. A simple addSibling(S s) would ease the object creation so much but renders the object mutable. What do you guys use in such cases? I'm on Scala and Java, but i think the problem is language agnostic as long as the language is object oriented. Solutions I can think of: "Constructor abominations with long parameter lists" The Builder Pattern Thanks for your input!

  • Most wanted feature for C# 4.0 ?

    - by Romain Verdier
Some blogs on the Internet give us several clues of what C# 4.0 would be made of. I would like to know what do you really want to see in C# 4.0. Here are some related articles: C# 4 tag on Jon Skeet's blog 4 features for C# 4 What do you want in C# 4 Future Focus - I: Dynamic Lookup .NET 4, C# 4 and the DLR Channel 9 also hosts a very interesting video where Anders Hejlsberg and the C# 4.0 design team talk about the upcoming version of the language. I'm particularly excited about dynamic lookup and AST. I hope we would be able to leverage - at some level - the underlying DLR mechanisms from C#-the-static-language. What about you ?

  • How are lists implemented in Haskell (GHC)?

    - by eman
I was just curious about some exact implementation details of lists in Haskell (GHC-specific answers are fine)--are they naive linked lists, or do they have any special optimizations? More specifically: Do length and (!!) (for instance) have to iterate through the list? If so, are their values cached in any way (i.e., if I call length twice, will it have to iterate both times)? Does access to the back of the list involve iterating through the whole list? Are infinite lists and list comprehensions memoized? (i.e., for fib = 1:1:zipWith (+) fib (tail fib), will each value be computed recursively, or will it rely on the previous computed value?) Any other interesting implementation details would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  • Throwing an exception while handling an exception

    - by FredOverflow
If a destructor throws in C++ during stack unwinding caused by an exception, the program terminates. (That's why destructors should never throw in C++.) If a finally block is entered in Java because of an exception in the corresponding try block and that finally block throws another exception, the first exception is silently swallowed. This question crossed my mind: Could a programming language handle multiple exceptions being thrown at the same time? Would that be useful? Have you ever missed that ability? Is there a language that already supports this? Is there any experience with such an approach? Any thoughts?

  • ANTLR JavaScript Target

    - by kunalsawlani
Hello, I have been using ANTLR to generate a parser + tree grammar for a mark up language with Java target which works fine. Now I am trying to get the target in JavaScript to use it in my web browser. However, I have not been able to locate any good documentation on how to go about doing this. I am using eclipse with ANTLR IDE, and when i specify the language as JavaScript, I get the following errors. Multiple markers at this line (10): internal error: group JavaScript does not satisfy interface ANTLRCore: mismatched arguments on these templates [treeParser(grammar, name, scopes, tokens, tokenNames, globalAction, rules, numRules, bitsets, labelType, ASTLabelType, superClass, members, filterMode)] (10): internal error: java.util.NoSuchElementException: no such attribute: filterMode in template context [treeParser] If anyone could help me out with this or point me to some material which I could read about the JavaScript target with ANTLR, it would be great. Thanks

  • How do I create interface methods using .tlb types in VS C++?

    - by Steven
Background: The .TLB file contains interfaces written in language 'X'. I don't have .h, .idl, .tlh, or any other header files - just the .TLB file. Language 'X' does not export compatible .h, .idl, etc. I use the VS wizard to add an ATL simple object to my ATL project. I want to add a method to the interface of my simple ATL object that uses one of the .TLB defined types for a parameter. // Something like the following in the .idl file: interface ISomeInterface : IUnknown { HRESULT SomeMethod([in] ITypeFromTLB* aVal); // ITypeFromTLB declared in .TLB file. }; How can I do this? I'm hoping for a wizard, or a line in the .idl interface declaration that would bring in the .tlb information. midl's include (no .tlb), import (no tlb), and importlib (library only) don't seem to provide a solution (I need proxy/stub to be working, so I cannot put this inside the library declaration with the importlib command). Thanks.

  • FIFA official website design and development

    - by Morron
Hi, I'm just curious about design and development of official FIFA website. What is the programming language being used to build the site? What is the development methodology they are using? I used Firebug to look around the site. Here's sth I found: HTTP/1.1 200 OK Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate, private Content-Type: text/html Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.0 x-ua-compatible: IE=EmulateIE7 Vary: Accept-Encoding Content-Length: 8320 Date: Tue, 15 Jun 2010 17:54:19 GMT Connection: keep-alive According to that, I think they use IIS 7 to run the site but I'm not sure what programming language they are using. Any comment is a drop of water in the glass.

  • How to create a web framework in C# without ASPX?

    - by Mark
I've managed to get a C# asp page running under ubuntu/apache/mono, but I don't want to write my framework in these ASP pages, I want to use straight C# and then I'll use a templating language for my views. But I don't know where to begin? C# is a compiled language, so... how would I do this? Would I compile everything and then have apache hook into the (single) executable and pass in the the request URL? Could I request specific .cs pages and then have apache tell it to compile and then "display" it only if it's been updated? Can the "view" files be compiled individually to avoid having to recompile everything every time there's a change? Is there some "base" I can work from, or am I going to have to reinvent accessing GET and POST variables (by reading header info) and all sorts of other stuff we take for granted in languages like PHP?

  • How do I set an Array in one class with another array in another class in Objective-C

    - by Stef
Hi Guys, I've populated and array with data like this in one class... PowerClass .h NSMutableArray pickerArray; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableArray pickerArray; - PowerClass .m @synthesize pickerArray; @implementation NSMutableArray *array = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:@"stef", @"steve", @"baddamans", @"jonny", nil]; pickerArray = [NSMutableArray arrayWithArray:array]; And I'm trying to set the Array in another class WeekClass .h PowerClass *powerClass; NSMutableArray *pickerData; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableArray pickerData; @property (nonatomic, retain) PowerClass *powerClass; WeekClass .m @implementation pickerData = [NSMutableArray arrayWithArray:powerClass.pickerArray]; I have no errors or warnings. It just crashes. The NSLog says that the powerClass.PickerArray is Null... I don't know why this is... Please help point me in the right direction... Thanx guys Stef :-)

  • How to disable localization of errors in Visual Studio?

    - by MartyIX
I use Visual Studio 2008 and it really makes me crazy how it shows error messages (in Error List window, Output window - especially exceptions) partially in English and partially in my native language. Interestingly, it is worse in WPF than in WinForms project. I've read here that it is about Culture of the running thread (so that the problem is in a settings for .NET). Why am I solving it? It's simple because if I run into an error message and I don't know what it exactly mean or how to fix the problem then trying to google the problem in any other language than in English is very problematic. For example, it would be useful to set English for debugging purposes. How to solve the problem? Thanks for any suggestion!

  • i18n and l10n web guidelines

    - by Konstantin Petrukhnov
Is there any standards/guidelines/good practices for making websites with support of different content and UI? I'm interesting in articles/tutorials, that cover this topics. E.g. there going to be website for multiple countries. And user should have possibility to select UI and content languages separately. I assume that not all content will be translated, so there should be some mechanism for showing "default language" content for specific page. But again, should this "default" be per site, or per country? E.g. in some countries (Belgium, Finland) there are several official languages. If one language is unavailable, should default be second one, or English? Another example: many people prefer English UI (no mater of their origin), but want local scales (inches, meters) and local services. I don't care much about programing languages now, just want to understand what users are expected, what should be scope, and what are good practices.

  • Change the null placeholder in a Cocoa binding?

    - by Monolo
Is there a way to change (for the purpose of localization) the null placeholder in a binding in Cocoa? The bindings are set up in Interface Builder for a popup button. The two-way nature of the bindings as set up in IB is needed, so doing it programmatically is not really appealing. I am aware that the standard way of handling localizations of a nib file is by making one for each language, but since this is the only difference in the whole nib file between the language versions, it seems a bit excessive for a single string. If there is a way to modify a binding created in IB, I was thinning about doing it in the file's owner's awakeFromNib method.

  • Implementing Domain Driven Design

    - by Steve Dunn
Is anyone using the techniques from Domain Driven Design? I've recently read the Eric Evans book of the same name (well, most of it!) and would be interested to hear from anyone who's implemented all/some of it in a project (particularly in C#/C++) I've kept this question open ended as I'd like to see as many comments as possible, but I have a few questions in particular: 1 - Should value types be real 'value types' if the language supports it? e.g. a struct in C# 2- Is there any feature in C# that makes clearer the association between the language and the model (for instance, this is an entity, this is an aggregate etc.)

  • CPP extension and multiline literals in Haskell

    - by jetxee
Is it possible to use CPP extension on Haskell code which contains multiline string literals? Are there other conditional compilation techniques for Haskell? For example, let's take this code: -- If the next line is uncommented, the program does not compile. -- {-# LANGUAGE CPP #-} msg = "Hello\ \ Wor\ \ld!" main = putStrLn msg If I uncomment {-# LANGUAGE CPP #-}, then GHC refutes this code with a lexical error: [1 of 1] Compiling Main ( cpp-multiline.hs, cpp-multiline.o ) cpp-multiline.hs:4:17: lexical error in string/character literal at character 'o' Using GHC 6.12.1, cpphs is available. I confirm that using cpphs.compat wrapper and -pgmP cpphs.compat option helps, but I'd like to have a solution which does not depend on custom shell scripts. -pgmP cpphs does not work. P.S. I need to use different code for GHC < 6.12 and GHC = 6.12, is it possible without preprocessor?
