• Is Information Technology really Engineering?

  While travelling I met a mathematician who was sitting near me. In a discussion he said: "...there is nothing like engineering in IT or rather programming". A true engineering is what Architecture is, what Electrical and Mechanical is. It made me think and I was puzzled. A percent of my brain agreed also because in Indian Army, there is no subject like Computer Engineering in the Engineering Corps. They don't consider programming as engineering. This is what I heard few years back, I don't know what Indian Army thinks now. What are your views?

• what is the simplest 3d software for unity?

  Ive heard a lot about Daz studio, Poser, Maya, K-3d, Anim8or, Blender, and all the rest. My question is which one is the best choice in terms of simplicity and quality. price is not an issue really. I'm programming games in java for android mobile devices at the moment but i will eventually move onto larger platforms. I would like to utilize unity3d for the game programming itself and utilize a 3d modeling software just to create the game objects. I just need to know the best one to get started with from scratch or should i use a combination of multiple ones? Any insight for this would be great, thanks!

• Self Documenting Code Vs. Commented Code

  I had a search but didn't find what I was looking for, please feel free to link me if this question has already being asked. Earlier this month this post was made: http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/php/why-youre-a-bad-php-programmer/ Basically to sum it up, you're a bad programmer if you don't write comments. My personal opinion is that code should be descriptive and mostly not require comment's unless the code cannot be self describing. In the example given // Get the extension off the image filename $pieces = explode('.', $image_name); $extension = array_pop($pieces); The author said this code should be given a comment, my personal opinion is the code should be a function call that is descriptive: $extension = GetFileExtension($image_filename); However in the comments someone actually made just that suggestion: http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/php/why-youre-a-bad-php-programmer/comment-page-2/#comment-357130 The author responded by saying the commenter was "one of those people", i.e, a bad programmer. • How would you explain that software engineering is more specialized than other engineering fields?

  I work with someone who insists that any good software engineer can develop in any software technology, and experience in a particular technology doesn't matter to building good software. His analogy was that you don't have to have knowledge of the product being built to know how to build an assembly line that manufactures said product. In a way it's a compliment to be viewed with an eye such that "if you're good, you're good at everything", but in a way it also trivializes the profession, as in "Codemonkey, go sling code". Without experience in certain software frameworks, you can get in trouble fast, and that's important. I tried explaining this, but he didn't buy it. Any different views or thoughts on this to help explain that my experience in one thing, doesn't translate to all things?

Currently I am using this meta tag: <meta name="viewport" content="width=575; user-scalable=no;"> This displays some odd behavior in that it loads fully zoomed out and then, once the page is loaded, zooms in to 575. What are the best methods to ensure that my site will surely display at 575px wide in mobile browsers?

• How to do a cacheable redirection?

  When users enter my website example.com, their "preferred" language is detected and they are redirected (using a 301 Moved Permanently redirection) to example.com/en/ (for english), example.com/it/ (for italian), etc. It works perfectly, but when I analized my website with the Google Page Speed tool it gave me the following advice. Many pages, especially mobile pages, redirect users to a different URL, for instance from www.example.com to m.example.com. Making this redirect cacheable by the user's browser can speed up page load times for repeat visitors to a site. And later it says We recommend using a 302 redirect with a cache lifetime of one day. The redirect should include a Vary: User-Agent header as well as a Cache-Control: private header. So my questions are, how can I do a "cacheable" redirection in PHP? Would the following be enough? header("HTTP/1.0 302 Moved Temporarily"); header("Location: example.com/whatever"); exit;

• sound card is not working

  I've installed Ubuntu 11.4 on my dell xps m2010 using wubi. Then booted up and could not connect to the Internet using 3three huawei e122 usb mobile broadband (I would like this to work also). I've managed to connect through a wireless network, I went to my favorite sites and was told I needed to install adobe flash player.This what I did players run and picture is good. But there is no sound! Then I've tried to play songs in Banshee, but no sound. I have checked everything in sound preferences including test speaker, there is sound. I have sigmatel sound card.   I am a QA engineer interested in mobile development and automation.I have basic programming experience (intermediate level Python, C++ programmer) and as most companies choose Java for writing frameworks I need to pickup Java. I use Ubutnu 12.04 LTS and I will be using Head First Java as learning material. When I searched for JDK options I found Oracle Java 6 and 7 and Open JDK. I read somewhere in Ubuntu forums that Java 6 is not recommended on Ubuntu systems and I am a little bit confused about which version should I use, that would be compatible with the book and the OS.

  so i figured this one out, as a newcomer to the web development scene from the telecom biz, where we dealt with low level hardware API's, and a C++ fanboy, i tend to be bothered by automagical code, yes i appreciate the effort that went into it, and i certainly appreciate the luxury it provides to get more things done, but i just don't get it. so i decided to change that, and start investigating the new MVC based web apps, and at first it was like hitting a brick wall, i knew MVC from MFC days, so i'm familiar with the pattern, but i just couldn't get my head around the web version of it, till i came to realize the routing, is actually a separate feature to be inspected, much like understanding how LINQ works by better understanding anonymous objects. and so this article serve as an introduction to the following blogs where i share my views of how asp.net routing works, and then leverage that to the MVC level, and play around that field for a bit. as with most of my shared knowladge that may seem trivial to some, but i guess a newcomer's point of view can be useful for some folks out there.

  I have an Android game in which I've included ads from Millennial Media and Admob. Between these two networks, my fill rate is consistently above 95%. Right now, I'm getting over 45,000 requests for ads per day, and I'm starting to see exponential growth. But, my eCpm for both Millennial and Admob is ridiculously low. Millennial's is $.12 and Admob's is $.01. I've been reading some other posts and it seems like people are getting between $1 and $4 per 1,000 views. How can increase mine? Thank you!
