• My linux server takes more than an hour to boot. Suggestions?

  I am building a CentOS 5.4 system that boots off a compact flash card using a card reader that emulates an IDE drive. It literally takes about an hour to boot. The ultra-slow part occurs when Grub is loading the kernel. Once that's done, the rest of the boot process only takes about a minute to get to a login prompt. Does anyone have any suggestions? I suspect that it may have to do with UDMA. Everything IDE-related in my BIOS seems to checkout. The read performance hdparm is telling me 1.77 MB/s. Ouch! • SEO - Problems possibly related to 301 Moved Permanently

  Right, here's the story: We have had a website for one of our brands now for many years, the site design was very bad and recently did a complete overhaul, mostly design, but also some of the backend code. The original site was using links such as this example.com/products/item/127 and thus I wanted to change them to be move user friendly, especially to include the product name, the same link now reads example.com/product/127/my-jucy-product/. Since our switch over we have seen our Google results take a beating (we were on the first page for our normal search terms, now we're nearer the 4th!). The other problem we're having is that the links to the old products haven't updated to the new links despite me coding a 301 redirect from old to new. The 301 is not being fired from .htaccess, but in our PHP framework. I had a look at how the site is being loaded from a old link that is still in Google and here's what firebug is reporting: GET <google link> 302 Found GET example.com/products/item/127 302 Found GET example.com/products/item/127 301 Moved Permanently GET example.com/product/127/my-jucy-product/ 302 Found So the Google link has a 302, good. But when the old link comes in our framework is returning a 302! It's only afterwards when it finally hits the right part of the framework does it 301, so here's my question: Is the reason our old links have not changed and our Google Ranking has significantly nose dived because Google is seeing a 302 before the 301? At the time I was reluctant to mess with our .htaccess because it had become pretty complicated and I was under some pretty intense time constraints, now I'm wondering whether this was an incorrect disicion and perhaps I should revisit it. Many thanks! Edit Bugger, just signed up to the Webmaster Tools and I'm getting redirect errors all over the place, hundreds of them! I think this is my problem.

  Hi I'm developing an Eclipse product. In my plugin i have added an executable file (.exe) which i need to execute. When i launch the product from the eclipse, the file is referenced using the path of the executable on my file system and all went ok. When i export the product the plugin is packaged in a jar file which contains the executable file too. When it references the file the path is something like : $path_to_the_plugin_jar!/$path_to_exe_file_inside_the_jar Using this path to launch a new Process Thrown an exception. How can i refer to a file inside a jar?How could i execute the file? Can i extract the file when i export the product with eclipse? thanks

  I have installed searchlogic and added will_paginate etc. I currently have a product model that has tagging enabled using the acts_as_taggable_on plugin. I want to search the tags using searchlogic. Here is the taggable plugin page: http://github.com/mbleigh/acts-as-taggable-on Each product has a "tag_list" that i can access using Product.tag_list or i can access a specific tag using Product.tags[0] I can't find the scope to use for searching however with search logic. Here is my part of my working form. <p> <%= f.label :name_or_description_like, "Name" %><br /> <%= f.text_field :name_or_description_like %> </p> I have tried :name_or_description_or_tagged_with_like and :name_or_description_or_tags_like and also :name_or_description_or_tags_list_like to try and get it to work but I keep have an error that says the options i have tried are not found (named scopes not found). I am wondering how I can get this working or how to create my own named_scope that would allow me to search the tags added to each product by the taggable plugin. Thanks!

  In the context of C# 4, ASP.NET MVC 2, and NHibernate; I've got the following scenario: Let's assume an entity Product that have an association to ProductType. In a product edit view; how do I implement that only a sub-set of the product's properties are shown in an elegant and DRY way? Use a product view model builder, and from different view models automagically generate the view with my own Html.EditorForModel() (including drop-downs and other stuff not out-of-the-box)? Attribute the properties of one view model and use the Html.EditorForModel() way aforementioned? Use one model, but implement different web controls (view strategies) (can it be done DRY?)? Something else entirely?

• mysql fulltext search as level2 index

  lets say I have a table with product details. one of the fields is category (integer). I want to do fulltext search on product name in specific category. Unfortunately Mysql does not allow me to specify index that includes category and product name as fulltext. It looks like I can use fulltext only on product_name and theefore any fulltext search will search product names in all categories. Is there any way to solve this (allow fulltext search/index only on products in category)?

This window now shows the value extracted from the database, i.e. 0.5. This will confuse a user when I tell him with the help_text to enter the number in g, while seeing the number of kgs. Before saving the product I override save as follows: def save(self): if self.weight: self.weight = self.weight / 1000 This converts the number entered in grams to kgs.

  I was browsing my teacher's code when I stumbled across this: Order* order1 = NULL; then order1 = order(customer1, product2); which calls Order* order(Customer* customer, Product* product) { return new Order(customer, product); } This looks like silly code. I'm not sure why, but the teacher initialized all pointers to NULL instead of declaring them right away(looking at the code it's entirely possible, but he chose not to). My question is: is this good or acceptable code? Does the function call have any benefits over calling a constructor explicitely? And how does new work in this case? Can I imagine the code now as kind of like: order1 = new Order(customer, product);

Given the following example, it can get rather tedious ... • Adding childs to list of parents with jquery /mvc2

  Hi, I have a table of products on my page, each product has zero or more colors, the colors are shown as a list beneath the product. After the colors I have a button to add a color. The button will do an ajax call with the parent product id to a controller which will return a JSON object with color information. My problem is where to store the product id in the DOM, should I put it in a hidden field and use jquery in the click event of the "add color" to get to it? What is the best way to do this? • file_column not creating files, just empty tmp directory

  Up to the end of December 2009 everything worked fine, so i assume that after some upgrades on servers (Ubuntu 8.10 and second Ubuntu 9.10) something stopped working. Model: class Product < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :category file_column :thumbnail, :magick = { :geometry = "150x100" } there is of course table 'products' in database, and it has column 'thumbnail' what's interesting that File actually is uploaded to server, it goes to the /tmp directory under RackMultipartXXXX-0 name, and it is unmodified image. The problem is, that then this file is not moved to 'tmp' dir under RAILS_ROOT/public/product/ nor the 'XX' (where xx means ID of a product) under public/product also. i don't know what to do, i spend few HOURS trying different versions of file_column, also trying to make new, test rails application only from scaffold, but then, in this new application problem was the same

• How do I get a full Magento session in an external script? (Specifically, Catalog Rules)

  I'm running an external script that loads up a Magento session. Within that script, I'm loading products and grabbing a bunch of properties. The one issue is that getFinalPrice() does not apply the catalog rules that apply to the product. I'm doing everything I know to set the session, even a bunch of stuff that I think is superfluous. Nothing seems to get these rules applied. Here's a test script: require_once "app/Mage.php"; umask(0); $app = Mage::app("default"); $app->getTranslator()->init('frontend'); //Probably not needed Mage::getSingleton('core/session', array('name'=>'frontend')); $session = Mage::getSingleton("customer/session"); $session->start(); //Probably not needed $session->loginById(122); $product = Mage::getModel('catalog/product')->load(1429); echo $product->getFinalPrice(); Any insight is appreciated.

• Creating items in groups in Rails

  My product table is id type price location 1 chips $3 aisle3 I have a question with adding the products in groups. There is a quantity field(nonmodel) where the user can enter the quantity While adding a new product if the user enters: type: soda quantity: 3 Then there 3 records should be created in product model with type= soda like the following. id type 2 soda 3 soda 4 soda If user enters location: aisle4 quantity: 2 Then id location 5 ailse4 6 ailse4 Can you tell me how to pass the nonmodel field 'quantity' to the rails(model or controller) and how use it to add the products in groups as mentioned above? or should I create a column called quantity in my product table? Will the history be updated too for all these new records with after_create filter which I already have ? Is there any good tutorial or book which shows how to pass such nonmodel html/javascript fields from view to rails and then back to the view? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
