  • Encrypt ONE system directory?

    I dont want to encrypt my whole hard drive. But one app i ENJOY using stores my password in a not so secure way in the AppData folder. I would like to encrypt the folder. One note is the folder is inside my user/name directory. Maybe that will help or hinder the solution. I am fine with encrypting all of AppData if necessary. However i prefer not to encrypt C:\Users\NAME\ since it is heavily used by many apps. C:\Users\NAME\AppData\Local\APPNAME

  • Apache mod_rewrite not working properly on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

    Hello all, I'm trying to create a PHP website with clean URLs with Apache's mod_rewrite, using a .htaccess file. mod_rewrite seems to be working, however, it claims it cannot find files on my server that do exist. Just as a basic test, this is what my .htaccess file looks like at the moment--going to [mysite]/page should redirect to the index.php file: Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^page$ index.php Afaik, I have setup the .conf file appropriately as well: <Directory "/Users/myuser/Sites/"> Options Indexes MultiViews AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> However, when I try accessing the URL setup via mod_rewrite ( localhost/~myuser/mysite/page ), I get this: Not Found The requested URL /Users/myuser/Sites/mysite/index.php was not found on this server. However, that file does exist, and that is the proper location! The site works fine otherwise, if I go to localhost/~myuser/mysite/index.php, everything works fine--minus any sort of clean URLs, of course. Has anyone seen this before/have any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

  • Scaling web application with SQL Server 2008 database

    I have a database which has 90% of read only tables. 10% of the tables has writable data. We need to scale the ASP.NET application.We need to add more users who will not be writing to the database. We are thinking of adding another server and routing the users who need read only access to that server. Is there a way to replicate just some tables to another database server. Since the 90% of data doesnt change, we don't want to setup any full database replication. Please advise.

  • Windows Licensing Question [closed]

    Hi, This is a fairly simple licensing question that has me confused. We have 3 servers: SERVER1,SERVER2,SERVER3 running on Windows Server 2003. We have 25 users. Do I need to buy 75 user licenses for the users to access all the servers or can I get by with 25? If I then upgrade 1 server to Windows Server 2008, do I need to buy a new set of user licenses. If I then upgrade the other 2, do I then need to buy 2 more sets of user licenses? Sorry for the confusion!

Notice how in the first example, 'test.l.bc' was generated alongside libtest.a. But in the second example test.l.bc was not generated. Where did it go? This is a contrived example, but in the project I'm trying to build with alchemy the make scripts generate libraries in full paths and then refer to them that way. It seems that alchemy's 'ar' tool is broken if you try to generate a library anywhere other than '.'. Has anyone else seen this?     Hi, I have an RMI client/server set-up on two machines that works fine in a simple situation when the server doesn't require a client-side defned class. However, when I need to use a class defined on the client side I am unable to have the server unmarshall those classes. I suspect this is an issue with my java.rmi.server.codebase property that I pass in as argument to the client app. I followed Sun's RMI Tutorial trail and I think I have followed the steps exactly except that I don't specify a classpath argument when executing client and server because they execute in the directory right above the root package directory (however I tried that too with no effect).   • An "elegant" way of identifying a field?

    Hi. I'm writing a system that underlies programmer applications and that needs to detect their access to certain data. I can mostly do so with properties, like this: public class NiceClass { public int x { get; set; } } Then I go in and tweak the get and set accessors so that they handle the accesses appropriately. However this requires that the users (application programmers) define all of their data as properties. If the users want to use pre-existing classes that have "normal" fields (as opposed to properties), I cannot detect those accesses. Example: public class NotSoNiceClass { public int y; } I cannot detect accesses to y. However, I want to allow the use of pre-existing classes. As a compromise the users are responsible for notifying me whenever an access to that kind of data occurs. For example: NotSoNiceClass notSoNice; ... Write(notSoNice.y, 0); // (as opposed to notSoNice.y = 0;) Something like that. Believe me, I've researched this very thoroughly and even directly analysing the bytecode to detect accesses isn't reliable due to possible indirections, etc. I really do need the users to notify me. And now my question: could you recommend an "elegant" way to perform these notifications? (Yes, I know this whole situation isn't "elegant" to begin with; I'm trying not to make it worse ;) ). How would you do it? This is a problem for me because actually the situation is like this: I have the following class: public class SemiNiceClass { public NotSoNiceClass notSoNice { get; set; } public int z { get; set; } } If the user wants to do this: SemiNiceClass semiNice; ... semiNice.notSoNice.y = 0; They must instead do something like this: semiNice.Write("notSoNice").y = 0; Where Write will return a clone of notSoNice, which is what I wanted the set accessor to do anyway. However, using a string is pretty ugly: if later they refactor the field they'll have to go over their Write("notSoNice") accesses and change the string. How can we identify the field? I can only think of strings, ints and enums (i.e., ints again). But: We've already discussed the problem with strings. Ints are a pain. They're even worse because the user needs to remember which int corresponds to which field. Refactoring is equally difficult. Enums (such as NOT_SO_NICE and Z, i.e., the fields of SemiNiceClass) ease refactoring, but they require the user to write an enum per class (SemiNiceClass, etc), with a value per field of the class. It's annoying. I don't want them to hate me ;) So why, I hear you ask, can we not do this (below)? semiNice.Write(semiNice.notSoNice).y = 0; Because I need to know what field is being accessed, and semiNice.notSoNice doesn't identify a field. It's the value of the field, not the field itself. Sigh. I know this is ugly. Believe me ;) I'll greatly appreciate suggestions. Thanks in advance!   • Optimal storage of data structure for fast lookup and persistence

    Scenario I have the following methods: public void AddItemSecurity(int itemId, int[] userIds) public int[] GetValidItemIds(int userId) Initially I'm thinking storage on the form: itemId -> userId, userId, userId and userId -> itemId, itemId, itemId AddItemSecurity is based on how I get data from a third party API, GetValidItemIds is how I want to use it at runtime. There are potentially 2000 users and 10 million items. Item id's are on the form: 2007123456, 2010001234 (10 digits where first four represent the year). AddItemSecurity does not have to perform super fast, but GetValidIds needs to be subsecond. Also, if there is an update on an existing itemId I need to remove that itemId for users no longer in the list. I'm trying to think about how I should store this in an optimal fashion. Preferably on disk (with caching), but I want the code maintainable and clean. If the item id's had started at 0, I thought about creating a byte array the length of MaxItemId / 8 for each user, and set a true/false bit if the item was present or not. That would limit the array length to little over 1mb per user and give fast lookups as well as an easy way to update the list per user. By persisting this as Memory Mapped Files with the .Net 4 framework I think I would get decent caching as well (if the machine has enough RAM) without implementing caching logic myself. Parsing the id, stripping out the year, and store an array per year could be a solution. The ItemId - UserId[] list can be serialized directly to disk and read/write with a normal FileStream in order to persist the list and diff it when there are changes. Each time a new user is added all the lists have to updated as well, but this can be done nightly. Question Should I continue to try out this approach, or are there other paths which should be explored as well? I'm thinking SQL server will not perform fast enough, and it would give an overhead (at least if it's hosted on a different server), but my assumptions might be wrong. Any thought or insights on the matter is appreciated. And I want to try to solve it without adding too much hardware :) [Update 2010-03-31] I have now tested with SQL server 2008 under the following conditions. Table with two columns (userid,itemid) both are Int Clustered index on the two columns Added ~800.000 items for 180 users - Total of 144 million rows Allocated 4gb ram for SQL server Dual Core 2.66ghz laptop SSD disk Use a SqlDataReader to read all itemid's into a List Loop over all users If I run one thread it averages on 0.2 seconds. When I add a second thread it goes up to 0.4 seconds, which is still ok. From there on the results are decreasing. Adding a third thread brings alot of the queries up to 2 seonds. A forth thread, up to 4 seconds, a fifth spikes some of the queries up to 50 seconds. The CPU is roofing while this is going on, even on one thread. My test app takes some due to the speedy loop, and sql the rest. Which leads me to the conclusion that it won't scale very well. At least not on my tested hardware. Are there ways to optimize the database, say storing an array of int's per user instead of one record per item. But this makes it harder to remove items.

  • Dynamically change MYSQL query within a PHP file using jQuery .post?

    Hi, Been trying this for quite a while now and I need help. Basically I have a PHP file that queries database and I want to change the query based on a logged in users name. What happens on my site is that a user logs on with Twitter Oauth and I can display their details (twitter username etc.). I have a database which the user has added information to and I what I would like to happen is when the user logs in with Twitter Oauth, I could use jQuery to take the users username and update the mysql query to show only the results where the user_name = that particular users name. At the moment the mysql query is: "SELECT * FROM markers WHERE user_name = 'dave'" I've tried something like: "SELECT * FROM markers WHERE user_name = '$user_name'" And elsewhere in the PHP file I have $user_name = $_POST['user_name'];. In a separate file (the one in which the user is redirected to after they log in through Twitter) I have some jQuery like this: $(document).ready(function(){ $.post('phpsqlinfo_resultb.php',{user_name:"<?PHP echo $profile_name?>"})}); $profile_name has been defined earlier on that page. I know i'm clearly doing something wrong, i'm still learning. Is there a way to achieve what I want using jQuery to post the users username to the PHP file to change the mysql query to display only the results related to the user that is logged in.     Hello everyone! I'm building a silverlight application hosted on ASP.NET Web App. / IIS7 / SSL-enabled website. For security, I put my silverlight page inside a Members folder in the ASP.NET Web Application, and restricted access from anonymous users.(see web.config below) when users try to access pages under Members folder, they get redirected to https://www.ssldemo.com/authenticationtest/login.aspx. (see web.config below) (I've mapped www.ssldemo.com to 127.0.0.1). for security, I'm switching to HTTPS in login.aspx, and back to HTTP after validation. below is the code for login.aspx.cs. protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { LoginControl.LoggedIn += new EventHandler(LoginControl_LoggedIn); } void LoginControl_LoggedIn(object sender, EventArgs e) { //for going to ReturnURL & switching back to HTTP string serverName = HttpUtility.UrlEncode(Request.ServerVariables["SERVER_NAME"]); string returnURL = Request["ReturnURL"]; Response.Redirect(ResolveClientUrl("http://" + serverName + returnURL)); } The problem is, when I deploy another application to http://www.ssldemo.com/authenticationtest/members/AnotherApplication/ and open http://www.ssldemo.com/authenticationtest/members/AnotherApplication/default.aspx, Users get redirected to https://www.ssldemo.com/authenticationtest/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fauthenticationtest%2fmembers%2fanotherapplication%2fdefault.aspx. but even when I enter the correct credentials at login page, I get redirected to the same login page again, not to the ReturnUrl. when I looked into fiddler, it said '302 object moved to here.'
