• Confused about modifying the sprint backlog during a sprint

  I've been reading a lot about scrum lately, and I've found what seem to me to be conflicting information about whether or not it's ok to change the sprint backlog during a sprint. The Wikipedia article on scrum says it's not ok, and various other articles say this as well. Also my Software Development professor taught the same thing during an overview of scrum. However, I read Scrum and XP from the Trenches and that describes a section for unplanned items on the taskboard. So then I looked up the Scrum Guide and it says that during the sprint "No changes are made that would affect the Sprint Goal" and in the discussion of the Sprint Goal "If the work turns out to be different than the Development Team expected, then they collaborate with the Product Owner to negotiate the scope of Sprint Backlog within the Sprint." It goes on to say in the discussion of the Sprint Backlog: The Sprint Backlog is a plan with enough detail that changes in progress can be understood in the Daily Scrum. The Development Team modifies Sprint Backlog throughout the Sprint, and the Sprint Backlog emerges during the Sprint. This emergence occurs as the Development Team works through the plan and learns more about the work needed to achieve the Sprint Goal. As new work is required, the Development Team adds it to the Sprint Backlog. As work is performed or completed, the estimated remaining work is updated. When elements of the plan are deemed unnecessary, they are removed. Only the Development Team can change its Sprint Backlog during a Sprint. The Sprint Backlog is a highly visible, real-time picture of the work that the Development Team plans to accomplish during the Sprint, and it belongs solely to the Development Team. So at this point I'm altogether confused. Thinking about it, it makes more sense to me to take the second approach. The individual, specific items in the backlog don't seem to me to be the most important thing, but rather the sprint goal, so not changing the sprint goal but being able to change the backlog makes sense. For instance if both the product owner and the team thought they were on the same page about a story, but as the sprint progressed they figured out there was a misunderstanding, it seems like it makes sense to change the tasks that make up that story accordingly. Or if there was some story or task that was forgotten about, but is required to reach the sprint goal, I would think it would be best to add the story or task to the backlog during the sprint. However, there are a lot of people who seem quite adamant that any change to the sprint backlog is not ok. Am I misunderstanding that position somehow? Are those folks defining the sprint backlog differently somehow? My understanding of the sprint backlog is that it consists of both the stories and the tasks they're broken down into. Anyway I would really appreciate input on this issue. I'm trying to figure out both what the idealistic scrum approach is to changing the sprint backlog during a sprint, and whether people who use scrum successfully for development allow changing the sprint backlog during a sprint.

• Java Dragging an object from one area to another [on hold]

  Hello I have a game where you drag bits of food around the screen. I want to be able to click on an ingredient and drag it to another part of the screen where I release the mouse. I am new to java so I do not really know how to do this please help me Here is me code. • Introducing the Metro User Interface on Windows 2012

  Although I am a big fan of using PowerShell to do many of my server operations, that aspect is well covered by those far more knowledgeable than I, and there is vast information around the web already on that. The new Metro interface, and getting around both Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 though is relatively new, even for those whop ran the previews. What is this? A blank Desktop!   Where did the start button go? Well, it is still there...sort of. It is hidden, and acts like an auto hidden component that appear only when the mouse is hovered over the lower left corner of the screen. Those familiar with Gnome or OSX can relate this to the "Hot Corners" functions. To get to the start button, hover your mouse in the very left corner of the task bar. Let it sit there a moment, and a small blue square with colored tiles in it called start will appear. Click it. I clicked it and now I have all the tiles..What is this?   Welcome to the Metro interface. This is a much more modern look, and although at first seems weird and cumbersome, I have actually found that it is a bit more extensible, allowing greater organization and customization than the older explorer desktop. If you look closely, you'll see each box represents either a program, or program group. First, a few basics about using the start view. First and foremost, a right mouse click will bring up a bar on the bottom, with an icon towards the right. Notice it is titled “All Apps”. An even easier way in many places is to hover your mouse in the exact opposite corner, in the upper right. A sidebar will open and expose what used to be a widget bar (remember Vista?), and there are options for Search, Start, and Settings.   Ok Great, but where is everything? It’s all there…Click the All Apps icon.   Look better? Notice the scroll bar at the bottom. Move it right..your desktop is sized to your content..so you can have a smaller, or larger amount of programs exposed. Each icon can be secondary clicked (right mouse click for most of us, and an options bar at the bottom, rather than the old small context menu, is opened with some very familiar options.   Notice the top of the Windows Explorer window has some new features. You still have your right mouse click functions, but since the shortcuts for these items already exist..just copy them. There are many ways, but here is a long way to show you more of the interface. 1. Right mouse click a program icon, and select the Open File Location option. 2. Trusty file manager opens…but if you look closely up at top edge of the window, you’ll see a nifty enhancement. An orange colored box that is titled Shortcut Tools and another lavender box Title Application tools. Each of these adds options at the top of the file manager window to make selection easy. Of course, you can still secondary click an item in the listing window too. 3. Click shortcut tools, right click your app shortcut and copy it. Then simply paste it into the desktop outside the File Explorer window Also note some of the newer features. The large icons up top below the menu that has many common operations. The options change as you select each menu item. Well, that’s it for this installment. I hope this helps you out.

• XNA WP7 Texture memory and ContentManager

  I'm trying to get my WP7 XNA game's memory under control and under the 90MB limit for submission. One target I identified was UI textures, especially fullscreen ones, that would never get unloaded. So I moved UI texture loads to their own ContentManager so I can unload them. However, this doesn't seem to affect the value of Microsoft.Phone.Info.DeviceExtendedProperties.GetValue("ApplicationCurrentMemoryUsage"), so it doesn't look like the memory is actually being released. Example: splash screens. In Game.LoadContent(): Application.Instance.SetContentManager("UI"); // set the current content manager for (int i = 0; i < mSplashTextures.Length; ++i) { // load the splash textures mSplashTextures[i] = Application.Instance.Content.Load<Texture2D>(msSplashTextureNames[i]); } // set the content manager back to the global one Application.Instance.SetContentManager("Global"); When the initial load is done and the title screen starts, I do: Application.Instance.GetContentManager("UI").Unload(); The three textures take about 6.5 MB of memory. Before unloading the UI ContentManager, I see that ApplicationCurrentMemoryUsage is at 34.29 MB. After unloading the ContentManager (and doing a full GC.Collect()), it's still at 34.29 MB. But after that, I load another fullscreen texture (for the title screen background) and memory usage still doesn't change. • Configuring correct port for Oozie (invoking PIG script) in Cloudera Hue

  I am new to CDH4 Oozie workflow editor. While trying to invoke a pig script from Oozie workflow editor, i am getting the following error. HadoopAccessorException: E0900: Jobtracker [mymachine:8032] not allowed, not in Oozies whitelist It looks like Oozie is submitting the job to Yarn port (8032). I want it to submit to 8021 (MR jobtracker) port. Can someone help me in identify where to set the job tracker URL or port so that oozie picks up the correct one (using Hue or Cloudera manager). Previously I tried the following but none of them helped Modfied workflow.xml file /user/hue/oozie/workspaces/../workflow.xml file. However it gets overwritten when I submit the job from workflow editor. In cloudera Manager -- oozie -- configuration --Oozie Server (advanced) -- Oozie Server Configuration Safety Valve for oozie-site.xml property I set the following- <property> <name>oozie.service.HadoopAccessorService.nameNode.whitelist</name> <value>mymachine:8020</value> oozie.service.HadoopAccessorService.jobTracker.whitelist mymachine:8021 and restarted the oozie service. 3. Tried to override 'jobTracker' property while configuring the pig task. This appears as follows in the workflow file however it doesn't take effect (or doesn't override) and still uses 8032 port. <global> <configuration> <property> <name>jobTracker</name> <value>mymachine:8021</value> </property> </configuration> </global> I am using CDH4 version. • MSDeploy doesn't deploy to remote server using MSBuild and Visual Studio 2010

  I'm currently running Visual Studio Team System 2010 RC and I'm trying to get the Build Service setup to build my solution and deploy 3 web applications in it. I've created a custom build configuration called Integration and I've setup the "IIS Web site/application name to use on the destination server" on the Package/Publish tab of the Properties for each of the web applications. In my Build Definition I've set the following arguments: /p:DeployOnBuild=True /p:DeployTarget=MSDeployPublish /p:MSDeployPublishMethod=InProc /p:MsDeployServiceUrl=http://my-server-name:8172/msdeploy.axd /p:EnablePackageProcessLoggingAndAssert=True However, when I run the build I get the following error, for all three web applications: Updating setAcl (RightContent). C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\Web\Microsoft.Web.Publishing.targets(3481,5): error : Web deployment task failed. (Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation.) I don't think this is my actual problem though. This error is occuring after the following entry in the log: Updating setAcl This is what's causing the error message, but it appears that MSDeploy is trying to deploy to the local IIS on the Build server, not the server I specified with the MsDeployServiceUrl parameter. After looking at the targets file at C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\Web\Microsoft.Web.Publishing.targets, I added the EnablePackageProcessLoggingAndAssert, which adds extra logging. The log shows an emptry string for the value of MsDeployServiceUrl. I also noticed in the target that MsDeployServiceUrl has a lowercase s, which is somewhat confusing because the task name MSDeployPublish has an uppercase S. I tried using it using uppercase, then again using lowercase, but neither worked. A couple other things to note: My build service is running as NETWORK SERVICE. The server I'm trying to deploy to is on another domain. I also tried adding /p:username=mydomain\myusername /p:password=mypassword to the MSBuild paramter list, but that didn't help. Does anyone know if I'm supplying the correct parameters? Or provide me with the correct ones? Thanks

• Localize WiX installer which uses the Firewall extension

  I've got a WiX installer project which uses MSBuild to generate the MSI file. The WXS file includes the WiX firewall extension: xmlns:fire="http://schemas.microsoft.com/wix/FirewallExtension" I've defined two cultures in the MSBuild file with the following definition: <PropertyGroup> ... <Cultures>en-us;no-no</Cultures> </PropertyGroup> I've also added the translated resources: <ItemGroup> <EmbeddedResource Include="lang\Firewall_no-no.wxl" /> <EmbeddedResource Include="lang\WixUI_no-no.wxl" /> </ItemGroup> These represents translation to Norwegian for the Firewall extension and the WixUI extension. When I run the build it succeeds with the en-us part, but the no-no part fails with the following error messages: C:\delivery\Dev\wix30_public\src\ext\FirewallExtension\wixlib\FirewallExtension.wxs(19): error LGHT0102: The localization variable !(loc.WixSchedFirewallExceptionsInstall) is unknown. Please ensure the variable is defined. .... Couple of issues: I don't know where the C:\delivery directory comes from. I don't have such a directory. The localization variables referenced in the error message have been translated in the Firewall_no-no.wxl file. • Windows 7 - Enable Network DTC Access

  I have a Visual Studio 2010 Windows Forms application in which I start a transaction using the TransactionScope class. I then Receive a message from a Sql Server Broker Services message queue, which works fine. I next try to call a stored procedure from the same database with a call to my data access layer which is a Visual Studio dataset (xsd file). When I make this second call to the database I get the following error message: The MSDTC transaction manager was unable to pull the transaction from the source transaction manager due to communication problems. Possible causes are: a firewall is present and it doesn't have an exception for the MSDTC process, the two machines cannot find each other by their NetBIOS names, or the support for network transactions is not enabled for one of the two transaction managers. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8004D02B). I've seen several posts on the web that talk about Enabling DTC access through dcomcnfg.exe, and allowing DTC to communicate through Windows Firewall. I've done those things, and am still having this problem. I know our remote database server is setup to Enable DTC access, because we are using similar transactions in other projects built with Visual Studio 2008 on Windows XP and Vista. I think there is something specific about Windows 7 and Visual Studio 2010 causing this problem, but haven't been able to find out what it is. Can anyone help with this problem?

• Rewind request body stream

  I am re-implementing a request logger as Owin Middleware which logs the request url and body of all incoming requests. I am able to read the body, but if I do the body parameter in my controller is null. I'm guessing it's null because the stream position is at the end so there is nothing left to read when it tries to deserialize the body. I had a similar issue in a previous version of Web API but was able to set the Stream position back to 0. This particular stream throws a This stream does not support seek operations exception. In the most recent version of Web API 2.0 I could call Request.HttpContent.ReadAsStringAsync()inside my request logger, and the body would still arrive to the controller in tact. • SSRS 2005 Set SimplePageHeaders on the report instead of the server?

  I have one report that does not export to excel friendly from SSRS 2005. I know I can use <Render> <Extension Name="EXCEL" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.ExcelRenderer.ExcelRenderer,Microsoft.ReportingServices.ExcelRendering"> <Configuration> <DeviceInfo> <SimplePageHeaders>True</SimplePageHeaders> </DeviceInfo> </Configuration> </Extension> </Render> in the rsreportserver.config, but I am not the only person with reports on this machine. I also found that you can pass &rc:SimplePageHeaders=True in the url to export the report programatically. I tried adding the &rc:SimplePageHeaders=True to the end of the url when navigating to the report manager, but when I select excel from the dropdown and click export the headers are still exported. I even tried setting the rc:Command=Render and rc:Format=EXCEL in the url too without any luck. Is there a way to do what I am trying to do? note: I am wanting to render the report on the built in report manager and use the build in export to excel dropdown, not in an app or website.

  So, I've followed other related threads, but for some reason I'm still having this error and I'm about ready to tear my hair out. • Android: trouble updating to Android SDK Tools, revision 7.

  Currently I have Android SDK 2.1 (+ tools revision 4). I'd like to upgrade to Android SDK 2.2. When I try to do it I'm informed I need to upgrade Android SDK Tools to revision 7 first. So I agree, the process starts and then I get an error: -= warning! =- A folder failed to be renamed or moved. On Windows this typically means that a program Is using that Folder (for example Windows Explorer or your anti-virus software.) Please momentarily deactivate your anti-virus software. Please also close any running programs that may be accessing the directory 'D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\too!s'. When ready, press YES to try again. Downloading Android SDK Tools, revision 7 Installing Android SDK Tools, revision 7 Failed to rename directory D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools to D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\temp\ToolPackage.old01. I am aware of http/https and antivirus issues. So I disactivated my AV. I also closed any application that might hold a handle to the folder. Eclipse is also closed (I start the manager via command line). However I still get the same error. Looks like the only app that can hold a handle to the folder is the manager itself, because its starting directory is the one the error complains about ('\tools'). I am on Win XP Pro + SP3. Does anyone have an idea?

• Hive Based Registry in Flash

  To start with I'll say I've read the post here and I'm still having trouble. I'm trying to create a CE6 image with a hive-based registry that actually stores results through a reboot. I've ticked the hive settings in the catalog items. In common.reg, I've set the location of the hive ([HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\init\BootVars] "SystemHive") to "Hard Drive\Registry" (Note: the flash shows up as a device called "Hard Drive") In common.reg, I've set "Flags"=dword:3 in the same place to get the device manager loaded along with the storage manager I've verified that these settings are wrapped in "; HIVE BOOT SECTION" This is where it starts to fall over. It all compiles fine, but on the target system, when it boots, I get: A directory, called "Hard Disk" where a registry is put A device, name called "Hard Disk2" where the permanent flash is Any changes made to the registry are lost on a reboot What am I still missing? Why is the registry not being stored on the flash? Strangly, if I create a random file/directory in the registry directory, it is still there after a reboot, so even though this directory isn't on the other partition (where I tried to put it), it does appear to be permanent. If it is permanent, why don't registry settings save (ie Ethernet adapter IP addresses?) I'm not using any specific profiles, so I'm at a loss as to what the last step is to make this hive registry a permanent store.

  Hello, I am using WCF Ria Services beta in my silverlight application. I have a long running task on the server which keeps writing its status to a database table. I have a "GetTranslationProgress" Ria Service Query method which queries the state to get the status. This query method is called continuously at a regular interval of 5 seconds until a status = Finished or Error is retrieved. In some cases if the task on the server is running for a long duration 2-3 minutes then I receives this error:- Load operation failed for query 'GetTranslationProgress'. The server did not provide a meaningful reply; this might be caused by a contract mismatch, a premature session shutdown or an internal server error. at System.Windows.Ria.OperationBase.Complete(Exception error) at System.Windows.Ria.LoadOperation.Complete(Exception error) at System.Windows.Ria.DomainContext.CompleteLoad(IAsyncResult asyncResult) at System.Windows.Ria.DomainContext.<c_DisplayClass17.b_13(Object ) The error occurs intermittently and I have no idea what could be causing this error.   My task is to change the ErrorMessage property of the DataAnnotation validation attribute in MVC2.0. For example I should be able to pass an ID instead of the actual error message for the Model property and use that ID to retrieve some content(error message) from a another service e.g database, and display that error message in the View instead of the ID. MVC DatannotationsModelValidator’s ErrorMessage property is read only. So I cannot set anything here b. System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotationErrorMessage property(get and set) which is already set in MVC DatannotationsModelValidator so we cannot set again.   I am trying to use EWS, first time trying to use the ExchangeServiceBinding. I have tried to use impersonation because I will not know the logon user's domain password, so I thought impersonation would be the best fit. Any thoughts on how I can utilize impersonation? Am I setting this correctly, I get an error while trying to run my application. I also tried without impersonation just to try to see if I can create a task, no luck either. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Has anyone installed NServiceBus onto a Microsoft clustered server?

  I am trying to install NServiceBus onto a clustered win2k3 host. The configuration utility provided (runner.exe) throw some errors that I did not catch, and it now runs correctly. • iPhone Development - CLLocationManager vs. MapKit

  If i want to show userLocation on the map, and at the same time record the user's location, is it a good idea to add an observer to userLocation.location and record the locations, OR should i still use CLLocationManager for recording user location and use mapView.showUserLocation to show the user's current location (blue indicator)? I want to show the default blue indicator supported by the MapKit API.
