• Changing Dropdown based on Other Dropdown Menu

  I've seen a few questions like this, but mine is a bit more specific so I hope this isn't considered a repost. I am working on a website that is built with struts 2 and hibernate. I need to dynamically populate a drop down menu using data from a sql query based on an option selected in another drop down menu. So basically when the first option is selected I need to rehit the server and get the results from a query like SELECT column FROM table WHERE option = dropDownOption On top of that, I would really like to use ajax to only refresh the affected elements, however I'm really unfamiliar with ajax. I have jquery on this project and I found they have some ajax built in, but is this a good method for using it? any advice on this topic would be appreciated.

• Active Index is not being persisted in jQuery accordion change event

  I have an asp.net aspx page and on that page I have a hidden input field with and id of paneIndex. However, when I load the page, the alert shows index 1 which is correct on the first load, but if I open up pane 3 for example, the alert shows 1 still. Am I doing something wrong? • Flash Sprite looses focus on MOUSE_DOWN event

  My Sprite class keeps losing focus when I click with the mouse - specifically after the MOUSE_DOWN event (before the click is complete). I have set mouseEnabled to false on the children, no change. I added a listener for FOCUS_OUT and noticed that the FocusEvent.relatedObject property is NULL, which is confusing me - doesn't that mean there is no new focus target, the focus is just getting lost?   Hi - I'm a bit at a loss as to how to find a clean algorithm for doing the following: Suppose I have a dict k: >>> k = {'A': 68, 'B': 62, 'C': 47, 'D': 16, 'E': 81} I now want to randomly select one of these keys, based on the 'weight' they have in the total (i.e. sum) amount of keys. >>> sum(k.values()) >>> 274 So that there's a >>> 68.0/274.0 >>> 0.24817518248175183 24.81% percent change that A is selected. How would you write an algorithm that takes care of this? In other words, that makes sure that on 10.000 random picks, A will be selected 2.481 times?

• Color generation based on random number

  I would like to create a color generator based on random numbers, which might differ just slightly, but I need colors to be easily recognizable from each other. I was thinking about generation then in a rgb format which would be probably easiest. I'm afraid simply multiplying given arguments wouldn't do very well. What algorithm do you suggest using? Also, second generated color should not be the same as previous one, but I don't want to store them - nor multiplying with (micro)time would do well since the scripts' parts are usually faster.

• Does anybody have practice in programming PCMEF - architectures?

  PCMEF is an architecture style presented in the book Practical Software Engineering by Maciaszek and Liong. The layers are: P: Presentation C: Controller M: Mediator E: Entity F: Foundation. It is some kind of enchancement compared with MVC - architecture. I recommend it to interactice, data and communicating - oriented purposes. I have programmed it using Visual Prolog. Foundation in my applications is the data model (domains) for the application. PCMEF is like a simulated computer: Presentation is the display, Controller the user interface and event handling, Mediator the internal logic and data highway. Entity is the database or external interfaces and F defines the knowledge. This is a really nice small architecture. Does any other have experiance of it?

• Online Game programming in Google App Engine: AI

  I am currently in the planning stages of a game for google app engine, but cannot wrap my head around how I am going to handle AI. I intend to have persistant NPCs that will move about the map, but short of writing a program that generates the same XML requests I use to control player actions, than run it on another server I am stuck on how to do it. I have looked at the Task Queue feature, but due to long running processes not being an option on the App engine, I am a little stuck. I intend to run multiple server instances with 200+ persistant NPC entities that I will need to update. Most action is slowly roaming around based on player movements/concentrations, and attacking close range players(you can probably guess the type of game im developing)

  Hi! I have a SharePoint site (I'm the farm administrator with full control over the farm and site) and I used Windows authentication. I had a event receiver feature installed which manage add/update/delete for my lists to have custom behavior. Everything worked ok on Windows Authentication. But... now I am using form-based authentication (the same, I'm the site administrator with full control), but my feature works fine only with add/update events.... delete doesn't work any more, and it's the same code (damn it) as it was on windows authentication. Where am I doing wrong? why delete items don't work any more? Thanks in advance

  HI All I need to write a scientific application in C++ doing a lot of computations and using a lot of memory. I have part of the job but due to high requirements in terms of resources I was thinking to start moving to OpenMPI. Before doing that I have a simple curiosity: If I understood the principle of OpenMPI is the developer that has the task of splitting the jobs over different nodes calling SEND and RECEIVE based on node available at that time. Do you know if it does exist some library or OS or whatever that has this capability letting my code reamain as it is now? Basically something that connects all computers and let share as one their memory and CPU? I am a bit confused because of the high material available on the topic. Should I look at cloud computing? or Distributed Shared Memory? Can you help me or address me a bit? Thanks

  I have a number of table rows that I would like to toggle the visibility of. They should be visible if a data item I have set on them earlier equals a selected value in a form. Thing is that I thought I was able to give toggle a function that would decide if each row should be on or off, but it turns out I can only give it a boolean condition which would be an all or nothing deal kind of... So, I have this function: function() { return $(this).data('category_id') == category_id; } How can I use that to go through all the rows and toggle them on or off? Or is there a better approach to this? What should I do?

• The conventional location for storing my Java libraries and applications in UNIX based systems

  I usually store the Java applications and JAR files that I download from the Web in the ~/Java folder on my computer (an OS X machine). I have been doing this since the days when I was a Windows user. However I think in UNIX based systems user local apps are conventionally stored in another directory. I have a feeling that this directory should either be /usr/local/, /usr/local/USERNAME, /opt/local, or /opt/local/USERNAME but I am not sure. Any ideas which directory can I use for this purpose? Please note that, I am talking about archive files that I download from the Web, unpack and use locally and not programs that have installation scripts or MacPorts, etc.

  Hello, I have a file with lines having some fields delimited by "|". I have to extract the lines that are identical based on some of the fileds (i.e. find lines which contain the same values for fields 1,2,3 12,and 13) Other fields contents have no importance for searching but the whole extracted lines have to be complete.   Hi all, I have written this piece of code that splits a string and stores it in a string array:- String[] sSentence = sResult.split("[a-z]\.\s+"); However, I've added the [a-z] because I wanted to deal with some of the abbreviation problem. But then my result shows up as so:- Furthermore when Everett tried to instruct them in basic mathematics they proved unresponsiv I see that I loose the pattern specified in the split function. Its okay for me to loose the period, but loosing the last letter of the word disturbs its meaning. Could some one help me with this and in addition also could someone help me with dealing with abbreviations? Like because I split the string based on periods, I do not want to loose the abbreviations. Thanks in advance

  For event handling, I am starting to see many coders doing this: XButton.Click += OnXButtonClicked() ... void OnXButtonClicked() { ... } Where did this On_ convention come from? It just doesn't feel right in terms of methods. I am starting to see this as well and am wondering what others thought: XButton.Click += HandleXButtonClick() ... void HandleXButtonClick() { ... } When using intellisense, Visual Studio handles these like so: XButton.Click += XButton_Click; ... void XButton_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { ... } I am seeking some advice on these naming conventions and would greatly appreciate some advice.

  I'm developing an HTML5 application (a game), that automatically preloads 5 video files. I'm able to do so correctly on Safari for PC, so there are no overlooked problems with file formats, codecs or such. The load fails on an iPad. As an official guide for video on iOS puts it: This means the JavaScript play() and load() methods are also inactive until the user initiates playback, unless the play() or load() method is triggered by user action. In other words, a user-initiated Play button works, but an onLoad="play()" event does not. Does this mean, that I have no means to initiate the loading of video after a user initiated action, if that action hasn't been tied to a video element (user clicked on a regular div — I request loading and displaying of a video, compared to the user actually clicking on a video element to load and play that particular element)?
