• Defunct website taken over by spammer. How to stop them?

  A friend of mine used to publish a small literary fiction magazine, both in print and on the web. In 2011 she announced that she was quitting, put a note on the website, and carefully unwound the subscriptions. She continued hosting the site (with all the back-issues available for free) until the beginning of this year, when she let the hosting lapse and the domain name expire. Today she discovered that some unknown person has purchased her former domain name and put up a modified version of her entire site. The design is different but all the content is the same, including all of the back-issues of the magazine (and the stories by diverse authors contained within), their cover art, news posts, and even her contact information. All the content would have been available from Archive.org, so it's no mystery how they got it. The only thing noticeably changed is a column added to the front page titled "Favorite Videos", with around 35 links to Youtube videos. The links are named things like "Video (Worry)" and "Video (Squirting)" and the videos all feature a man named Leo giving dubious advice and promoting his life-coaching website. Here's one of the suspect videos. There does not appear to be any connection between the content of the videos and my friend or her magazine. I also posted to the Security StackExchange to ask why someone would do this and what the security risks are to her. What I want to know here is, what can she do to stop them? To be clear she doesn't want the domain name back. She just doesn't want her name and copyrighted material used deceptively. Also, what (if anything) could she have done when shutting down her website to avoid this happening?

• Actually utilizing relational databases for entity systems

  Recently I was researching several entity systems and obviously I came across T=Machine's fantastic articles on the subject. In Part 5 of the series the author uses a relational schema to explain how an entity system is built and works. Since reading this, I have been wondering whether or not actually using a compact SQL library would be fast enough for real-time usage in video games. Performance seems to be the main issue with a full blown SQL database for management of all entities and components. However, as mentioned in T=Machine's post, basically all access to data inside the SQLDB is done sequentlially by each system over each component. Additionally, using a library like SQLite, one could easily improve performance by storing the entity data exclusively in RAM to increase access speeds. Disregarding possible performance issues, using a SQL database, in my opinion, would allow for a very intuitive implementation of entity systems and bring a long certain other benefits like easy de/serialization of game states and consistency checks like the uniqueness of entity IDs. Edit for clarification: The main question was whether using a SQL database for the actual entity management (not just storing the game state on the disk) in a real-time game would still yield a framerate appropriate for a game or even if someone is aware of projects that demonstrate SQL in a video game.

• what is the best program to capture my workings as an AVI or MPEG

  I have already used recordmydesktop, xvidcap and kazam. My sound working fine with other audio or videos. xvidcap doesn't record sound at all. I have tried many ways. If I try as: 'padsp xvidcap', it also gives error, like: /dev/dsp cannot found or missing. I have changed it to /dev/snd. Still no effect. Even I can record sound through gnome-sound-recorder - after pressing record button, I open pavucontrol. Then from Recording tab, I choose 'Monitor of Analog Stereo'. But if I run xvidcap, I don't get that option in pavucontrol. kazam works a bit slow. It records at the beginning of the captured video. But for unknown reason, it eventually the sounds just go off. Also the video is not smooth as xvidcap. Though Kazam output as H64/MP4. Record my Desktop also doesn't give sound. Can you guys please help me, either - how to get sound with xvidcap or how kazam could be record nicely. I am looking something Camtasia, as used for Windows. Thanks in advance. Raihan

• How do I get my graphic card to work properly?

  I been having some problems with my graphic card for a time now. But I had enough when I did'nt get Oil Rush to work on my HP Pavilion g6. The system has suggested hardware drivers for me, but the first time I installed them they pretty much fucked up the graphics. After some time I managed to get the computere to work properly (I thought) again. When the game did'nt work I tried to the hardware drivers for the graphic card anyway. First of all there was to possible choices insted of one, as the last time I installed the drivers (when it did'nt work out so good). The choices are: ATI/AMDs proprietary video drivers FGLRX (update for edition) and Proprietary FGLRX-video drivers for ATI/AMD I realized the drivers probebly are pretty much the same, so I tried the first one. But this did'nt work. Instead I was asked to "Look in to /usr/var/log/jockey.log". This did'nt helped me much. Instead I choiced the other one, wich was installed and after reboot there where some changes. First of all there was a lot more details for Unity that was'nt there before and some shortkeys are now working that did'nt before (like Ctrl + T and the Prt Sc-button). But overall everything doesn't work as it used to. Like when you browse between the workspaces it doesn't look the same. To get to the point: it doesn't work well right now even if I got some things better and now will not Oil Rush (as I mentioned in the beginning) even start. SO! Can someone give me any advice with this? I'm stuck. Can't manage to see whats wrong right now. Any help? My graphic card is AMD Radeon HD 6470M.

• If I install Ubuntu 12.04, will it recognize all of my RAM?

  I have a question that's been bugging me since a long time. A friend of mine told me that when he had Ubuntu 11.10 installed the OS only recognized 3.4GB instead of 8GB. In the next week I'll be buying a new computer and I'll have 8GB of RAM, does the Video Card need to have it's own video memory for the OS to recognize the RAM entirely?. If you could give me some advise on how to configure my PC before I buy it it would be great. Thanks. Tengo una duda que me ronda de hace tiempo. • Gigabyte u24f Touchpad (elantech) not detected

  A new Ubuntu user here. I just installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my gigabyte U24F laptop. At first the touch-pad (I believe it's elantech) was working fine but one day I turned it off using fn+f10 key from the keyboard. The next day I could no longer turn it back on and it has since been undetected by the system. xinput returns Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)] ? ? Video Bus id=9 [slave keyboard (3)] ? Power Button id=10 [slave keyboard (3)] ? AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=12 [slave keyboard (3)] so there's no touch-pad detected. I'm using a USB mouse at the moment. Attempting to run synclient gives "Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?" Things I've tried so far to no avail Reinstalling xserver-xorg-input-synaptics. Checking dconf.editor settings, touchpad is enabled. Booting into a live usb session, touchpad no longer even works in this case. (Does this mean a fresh install wouldn't even solve the problem?) Any help is greatly appreciated!

• Should I cache the data or hit the database?

  I have not worked with any caching mechanisms and was wondering what my options are in the .net world for the following scenario. We basically have a a REST Service where the user passes an ID of a Category (think folder) and this category may have lots of sub categories and each of the sub categories could have 1000 of media containers (think file reference objects) which contain information about a file that may be on a NAS or SAN server (files are videos in this case). The relationship between these categories is stored in a database together with some permission rules and meta data about the sub categories. So from a UI perspective we have a lazy loaded tree control which is driven by the user by clicking on each sub folder (think of Windows explorer). Once they come to a URL of the video file, they then can watch the video. The number of users could grow into the 1000s and the sub categories and videos could be in the 10000s as the system grows. The question is should we carry on the way it is currently working where each request hits the database or should we think about caching the data? We are on using IIS 6/7 and Asp.net.

• nautilus crash when merging/overwriting files

  On my Ubuntu 10.10, whenever I want to copy some files/folders over some other files/folders, or when I try to empty the trash, nautilus crashes! Example: I have a folder with some files. Now I want to overwrite this folder with a folder with the same name, same files, but some additional files, the merge window comes up, I choose merge and nautilus crashes (does not respond, when I press the close button I can force close it). Some times it even does the copying/emptying (trash), but it always crashes! This happens when copying to the same partition/ntfs partition/netshares, but not when I make a new folder and copy the files/folders into that (without overwriting anything). On a netshare, it's even possible to merge these files afterwards with another computer! dmesg/syslog/messages does not show any entry related to that problem. Does anyone have a solution for this very annoying problem? EDIT: dpkg -l nautilus* (see output in pastebin) EDIT2: I found out, nautilus already crashes before clicking replace/merge (as soon as the question appeares. In the video it's not entirely clear, that i click the cross before the force-close dialog appeares. • Problems with microphone and network

  Hello... very good day everybody! I'm having some problems regarding the Ubuntu 12.4.01 LTS. For this reason, cordially i ask everyone's help. Such problems can be summed up in network (01) and audio (02)! 01) I can not set a DSL network settings in the "upper bar" (on side the clock). When i create the connection, the system says that the cables modem are disconnected! I can only use the internet if i set up a connection at terminal through the command "pppoeconf". I can not make recordings, obviously i can't use the microphone. I believe that something is giving interference or the settings are wrong! • How do I disable touchpad tap to click?

  You've heard this a million times but the "tap to click" is a pain in the behind and I want to disable it. There is no touchpad in gpointing-device-settings and neither in mouse and touchpad in system settings. I've tried some commands in terminal but it's all crap. Dconf-editor doesn't react. • Resolution changes when using switch

  So, the "real" resolution of my monitor is 1024x768. That's what I'd use on my docked Windows laptop, and what I'd use on my Xubuntu desktop connected directly. When I connect a switch, to switch between the two, however, the ubuntu machine's resolution changes. Everything's still proportional, and it still thinks it's doing 1024x768, but the icons and fonts appear larger. Not 800x600 larger, but still big. When I used Xubuntu Precise, I created an xorg.conf file to set a resolution of 1280x1024 which made it look the way it does without the switch ... as a workaround. When I upgraded to Trusty, I lost this. I tried to re-create it, but doesn't seem to load my file. Ideally, I'd like to correct the original problem, but I'd settle for being able to up the resolution. I searched for a while, and tried to do it, but I'm giving up ... please help me out. • Terminal closing itself after 14.04 upgrade

  All was fine in 12.04, in this case I'm using virtualbox in Windows. Last days the warning message about my Ubuntu version no longer being supported was coming up pretty often, so, yesterday I finally decided to upgrade. The upgrading process ran ok, no errors, no warnings. After rebooting the errors started to happen. Just after booting up there were some errors about video, gnome, and video textures (sorry I didn't care in that moment so I don't remember well). Luckly that went away after installing VirtualBox additions. But the big problem here is that I can't use the terminal. It opens Ok when pressing control+alt+t, but most of the commands cause instant closing. For example, df, ls, mv, cd... usually work, although it has closed few times. But 'find' causes instant close. 'apt-get' update kills it too, just after it gets the package list from the sources, when it starts processing them. I've tried xterm, everything works and I have none of that problems. I have tried reinstalling konsole, bash-static, bash-completion, but nothing worked. I have no idea what to do as there is no error message to search for the cause. It seems something related to bash, but that's all I know.

• dual monitors and unity - ati radeon cards

  I have a vaio laptop with an ATI Radeon video card and an external screen. I used to run dual monitors on Ubuntu 10.10 fine, but recently decided to upgrade to 11.10 via 11.04 I don't think it's the video card or the fglrx driver. It seems to be unity. When I start up, the laptop screen is normal and the external screen is all white, although I can move my mouse over it. However, the cursor becomes the big X that used to be cursor of the first versions of Xwindows. I can right click on it, and it brings up the context menu for the desktop. And then, all of a sudden, it shows my desktop background. I can continue to move my mouse over the external screen, and now the cursor is normal (little white arrow). But I can't do anything any longer (not even the context menu as before), and trying to drag a window to it (which always worked on 10.10) doesn't work. I actually really like unity. It gives me the most our of my desktop, and uses all space available, which is great. But how can I get my second screen back? I tried unity 2D, but the result is the same.   Recently I had an interview with dev team in a company. The team uses agile + TDD. The code exercise implements a video rental store which generates statement to calc total rental fee for each type of video (new release, children, etc) for a customer. The existing code use object like: Statement to generate statement and calc fee where big switch statement sits to use enum to determine how to calc rental fee customer holds a list of rentals movie base class and derived class for each type of movie (NEW, CHILDREN, ACTION, etc) The code originally doesn't compile as the owner was assumed to be hit by a bus. So here is what I did: outlined the improvement over object model to have better responsibility for each class. use strategy pattern to replace switch statement and weave them in config But the team says it's waste of time because there is no requirement for it and UAT test suite works and is the only guideline goes into architecture decision. The underlying story is just to get pricing feature out and not saying anything about how to do it. So the discussion is focused on why should time be spent on refactor the switch statement. In my understanding, agile methodology doesn't mean zero design upfront and such code smell should be avoided at the beginning. Also any unit/UAT test suite won't detect such code smell, otherwise sonar, findbugs won't exist. Here I want to ask: is there such a thing called agile design in the agile methodology? Just like agile documentation. how to define agile design upfront? how to know enough is enough? In my understanding, ballpark architecture and data contract among components should be defined before/when starting project, not the details. Am I right? anyone can explain what the team is really looking for in this kind of setup? is it design aspect or agile aspect? how to implement minimum viable product concept in the agile process in the real world project? Is it must that you feel embarrassed to be MVP?
