• Is it normal for GRUB to take some time (15+s) after I choose what to boot?

  I had been planning to change the background of my bootloader for a while, and finally got to it. Now the black screen I get for quite some time was made clear. It is still GRUB, because the background image stays, while all of the text is gone. Then it just simply shows the Lubuntu loading screen for, usually, not more than 3 seconds. I run Lubuntu 12.10. My question is, is this normal behaviour or is something going wrong, causing GRUB to take longer? • Virtual Hosts Not Working (12.10)

  I'm trying to get virtual hosts up and running on my Ubuntu laptop that has 12.10 installed. I'm running Apache2, and I enabled the virtual hosting module. When I go to 12.0.0.1, I'm able to get the default page. When I go to example.local, I just get the search engine results, instead of the "hey, you're seeing this" page I set up in that directory (/var/www/example.local). I even made sure I have only one "NameVirtualHost *:80" variable active. • No wubildr, No spaceleft, Boot Error and A previous installation was detected in D:\ubuntu. Please uninstall that before continuing

  At first I was downloading Ubuntu 12.10 using Windows Installer, but I cancelled it after just 2-3 minutes and dowloaded 32-Bit ISO (ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386). Then I created bootable USB Stick (new HP 210 v210 w) using Pendrivelinux (Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.1.4). I Formatted D Drive. (Both by Windows & EaseUS) I've set boot priority correctly. But after getting message "Boot Error", I ran wubi.exe directly from USB drive. Now the message is "A previous installation was detected in D:\ubuntu. Please uninstall that before continuing." I formatted D: again and performed disk check, surface test using EaseUS. It shows no error or bad sectors. Formatted & checked my pendrive too. Directly ran .iso. But same error keeps coming. I found way around above problems, by copying extracted .iso on D:\ and installing Ubuntu using wubi.exe and though on boot it was shown with Windows 7, selecting it caused following error Try hd(0,0): NTFS5 : No wubildr Try hd(0,1): NTFS5 : So, I uninstalled it and Reeinstalled it Now installation fails at around 7mins saying " An error occurred. No space left on device. For more info please see log file " My D: is a 9 GB partition. (99% Free) Ubuntu Site 12.10 says it needs around 4.5 GB. Now Trying it by extendin D: to 10 GB... • Problem installing Ubuntu 14.04 into a laptop using Windows 8.1

  I have used Ubuntu on my LG laptop for several years. I lately bought an Acer Aspire V5 laptop which included Windows 8.1. I don't have any data on it; I would like to just remove it completely (that horrible Windows 8.1) and install Ubuntu. I tried using a USB device with Ubuntu 14.04 (64bit version) saved on it. I changed the BIOS configuration, putting USB device first on boot order, Windows Boot Manager last. When I try to run with USB device it doesn't work. Messages like these show up: System doesn't have any USB boot option. Please select other boot option in Boot Manager Menu. Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1. insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer 2. choose your language settings, and then click "next" 3. click "repair your computer" If you do not have this disk, contact your system administrator manufacturer for assistance File \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr Status: 0xc000007b Info: the application or operating system couldn't be load...[?] required file is missing or contains errors. Could someone please write step-by-step procedures to install Ubuntu 14.04 after removing Windows 8.1 ? I already have done a second partition on the hard disk just in case.

• AR9485 wireless card loses ability to connect after hibernation

  This has happened twice now, the first time it happened I just reinstalled Ubuntu. The only things that I've been messing with in terms of networking, have been restarting the network-manager service after I resume from hibernate (because it never works right after resume, but restarting the service fixes that), and changing my mac address with ifconfig wlan0 down && ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 11:22:33:44:55 && ifconfig wlan0 up. using tail | dmesg returns a bunch of attempts to connect, saying something like authenticating ... okay you're connected! now I'm going to just disconnect because I feel like it. (reason=3). Any ideas? If it helps maybe I'll add a picture of the tail|dmesg output later. My wireless drivers are as follows: Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter Hamachi Network Interface Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter Here is a pastebin of some terminal outputs that could help. Also, the reddit thread has a few answers, for anyone curious. It's located here. It is entirely possible that it's just my school wifi blocking out my laptop, and my home wifi sucks. • Cycling through ItemStacks whlie supplying data... LOST [on hold]

• VCS for single user using file sync service

  I'm trying to setup a version control for my one man project. My project files are in sync thanks to live mesh (but I could be using dropbox for that matter), between my laptop, my home pc and my office pc. I'm now using Netbeans with local file history. Sometimes it helps to revert to a previous state of one file. But imagine a situation when multiple files have problems. Correct me if I'm wrong but I would have to go to every file and revert to previous "safe" state. I don't like this approach, so I'm considering using a version control between SVN and GIT. I have some previous experience with SVN (TortoiseSVN) and I know that I can create a file:// repo. So, what a want to do is setup a VCS inside my synced folder just to have the ability to "revert" to a previous version if something goes wrong. Since everything's been synced to all computers, I wouldn't ever need to run an update. The file tree organization would be the following: C:...\SyncedFolder\MyProject\ Inside MyProject folder are all the project files plus a directory that has SVN or GIT info of my project (the repo/master). What VCS is best for this situation: SVN or GIT? Does SVN need to store all files from HEAD revision, thus "duplicating" all my project inside my synced folder? Does GIT eliminates this problem? Is this the best approach?

• Very slow wireless connection (unrelated to power management) using Netgear N150 WNA1100 in 12.04

  I am using a Netgear N150 WNA1100 USB Adapter. The network driver is: ath9k_htc. When I use Ubuntu 12.04 my wireless connection is much slower than when I use the WNA1100 with my Windows 7 installation on the same machine. I have been researching this and the most common reason for this seems to be related to power management. However for me this is off by default. I had entered a bunch of different commands and, at one stage, I got it to work at full power. But then I rebooted the machine and it went back to slow again. After entering the different commands I was afraid that I may have messed something up, so I performed a fresh install of Ubuntu. I still have the same problem. My wireless connection is still much slower when using Ubuntu than when using Windows 7. I am not sure what other info could help... EDIT: Ok, I have made live usb from the iso file I used to install Ubuntu on this pc, and ran it on my laptop. Still the same problem. However la[top works grand on cable. I suppose this means that my wireless adapter or network driver can be eliminated as root of the problem.. So maybe to do with router itself? I use ZyXEL P-660HW-D1

• What design pattern (in python) to use for properly seperate runtime infos with core code?

  I am not sure if this is a clear question. I work on a python project that is based on terminal(console), for which I am planning to implement a GUI. I am not major in CS so I really have no idea about how to effectively design a message system such that: in console, it provide nice look info when runtime. in GUI, it is directed to a certain widget, let's say, a text label, or a bottom bar, or a hide-able frame. Do you have any suggestions? Currently, I am using print function to provide essential informations on stdout during runtime. So a lot of print .... are distributed here and there among the code. I am thinking to use macro-like variables such as 'FILE_NOT_EXTIS_MESSAGE' for printing, and define the variables in one file. Is this a standard way that people always do? How about I introduce a logging system? In sum, I am ask for a pattern that people are commonly using for handling of screen output information with high effectiveness and adaptivity.

• Installshield Development Error durring the Installation process

  Hey guys, I've been stuck by a problem for the past couple days that makes no sense to me. My installer builds fine in the Installshiled IDE but when it is about to finish the installation, int gets two errors then rollbacks: installation failure. Right when the install bar is at about 100%, an error box pops up that states this: "Error 1001.Exception occurred while initializing the installation: System.IO.FileLoadException: Attempt to load an unverifiable executable with fixups (IAT with more than 2 sections or a TLS section.) (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131019)." The box pops up once, then the installer flashes its status to "rollback" then pops up another error box, then once 'ok'ed it procedes to rollback as usual. The installers that I've tried(and failed) have always needed to be Setup.exes, when i try to build a .msi only setup I get this error message. It may help someone who knows more about this system than I do. Your project contains InstallShield prerequisites. A Setup.exe setup launcher is required if you are build a release that includes InstallShield prerequisites. Change your release settings to build Setup.exe, or remove the prerequisites from your project. -7076 There's nothing on the site that has anything from the error code, so I'm at a loss. The time this happend, addEntityForType was called all the way through, creating a new object for the "whereTasted" entity, before the final save: on the entire wine object. When I go through the same procedure again, it works fine. This leads me to believe it's something to do with the app having been run for a while when adding a new location, but I'm not sure. Any thoughts on how I can debug this and get more info the next time this happens?

• Android: get current location from best available provider

  Hi all, I have some Android code that needs to get the best available location QUICKLY, from GPS, network or whatever is available. Accuracy is less important than speed. Getting the best available location is surely a really standard task. Yet I can't find any code to demonstrate it. The Android location code expects you to specify criteria, register for updates, and wait - which is fine if you have detailed criteria and don't mind waiting around. But my app needs to work a bit more like the Maps app does when it first locates you - work from any available provider, and just check the location isn't wildly out of date or null. I've attempted to roll my own code to do this, but am having problems. (It's inside an IntentService where an upload happens, if that makes any difference. I've included all the code for info.) Everything works fine with the use of Nokia N97mini or E71. But when i tried it on HTC HD2, i get the exception from the server. I am using Netbeans 6.5.1 GlassFish V2 as Server. • iPhone Store Kit returning invalid product ID errors

  Hello, I am trying to test In App Purchases on my iPhone and running into a problem where the product IDs I request information for end up being returned to me as invalid product IDs in the "didRecieveResponse" method. I have: Created an in store product associated with this app. It's bundle ID matches everything else. It has been cleared for sale and approved by the developer. Made sure my new provisioning profile has in store app purchases enabled and it has the full app name: "com.domain.appname" Made sure this is the provisioning profile being used to sign the app to my iPhone. Made sure that "com.domain.appname" is the app ID used to build the provisioning profile. Made sure that "com.domain.appname" is used in my plist file as the bundle identifier. Everything seems to be in place, however I still get my products returned to me as invalid IDs. • Cannot get UISearchBar Scope Bar to appear in Toolbar (or anywhere) on iPad

  This is really causing me fits. I see a lot of info on putting a UISearchBar in the top row of a UITableView -- but I am putting the UISearchBar into the Toolbar at the top of my screen (on the iPad). I cannot find ANYTHING regarding how to handle UISearchBar and UISearchDisplayController using a UIPopoverController on the iPad. Any more info about the UISearchDisplayController using a UIPopoverController would be greatly appreciated. Please help with this as I am at my wit's end. Using IB, I put a toolbar on the IUView on the iPad. I added the following: Search Bar (not Search Bar and Search Display) to the toolbar. I set the options to be as follows: Show Cancel Button, Show Scope Bar, Scope Button Titles are: "Title1" and "Title2" (with Title2's radio button selected). Opaque, Clear Context and Auto Resize are checked. I hooked up the delegate of Search Bar to the "File's Owner" and linked it to IBOutlet theSearchBar.   Results Delphi users who wish to use HID USB in windows HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB Contain a list if keys containing vender ID and Producer ID numbers that co inside with the USB web sites data base. These numbers and the GUID held within the key gives important information to execute the HID.dll that is otherwise imposable to execute. The Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device manager/USB Serial Bus Controllers/Mass Storage Devices/details simply lists the registry data. The access to the programmer has been documented through the API32.dll with a number of procedures that accesses the registry. But that is not the problem yet it looks like the problem!!!!!!!!! The key is info about the registry and how to use it. These keys are viewed in RegEdit.exe it’s self. Some parts of the registry like the USB have been given a windows security system type of protection with a Aurthz.dll to give the USB read and right protection. Even the api32.dll. Now only Microsoft give out these details and we all know Microsoft hate Delphi. Now C users have enjoyed this access for over 10 years now. Now some will make out that you should never give out such information because some idiot may make a stupid virus (true), but the argument is also do Delphi users need to be denied USB access for another ten years!!!!!!!!!!!!. What I do not have is the skill in is assembly code. I’m seeking for some one that can trace how regedit.exe gets its access through Aurthz.dll to access the USB data. So I’m asking all who reads this:- to partition any friend they have that has this skill to get the Aurthz.dll info needed. I find communicating with USB.org they reply when they have a positive email reply but do not bother should their email be a slightly negative policy. For all simple reasoning, all that USB had to do was to have a secure key as they have done, and to update the same data into a unsecured key every time the data is changed for USB developer to access. And not bother developers access to Aurthz.dll. • Freezes (not crashes) with GCD, blocks and Core Data

  I have recently rewritten my Core Data driven database controller to use Grand Central Dispatch to manage fetching and importing in the background. Controller can operate on 2 NSManagedContext's: NSManagedObjectContext *mainMoc instance variable for main thread. this contexts is used only by quick access for UI by main thread or by dipatch_get_main_queue() global queue. NSManagedObjectContext *bgMoc for background tasks (importing and fetching data for NSFetchedresultsController for tables). This background tasks are fired ONLY by user defined queue: dispatch_queue_t bgQueue (instance variable in database controller object). Fetching data for tables is done in background to not block user UI when bigger or more complicated predicates are performed. I know this pattern is not completely clean for at last 2 reasons: bgQueue not necessarily fires the same thread after suspension but since it is serial, it should not matter much (there is never 2 threads trying access bgMoc NSManagedObjectContext dedicated to it). Sometimes table view data source methods will ask NSFetchedResultsController for info from bgMoc (since fetch is done on bgQueue) like sections count, fetched objects in section count, etc.... Event with this flaws this approach works pretty well of the 95% of application running time until ... AND HERE GOES MY QUESTION: Sometimes, very randomly application freezes but not crashes. It does not response on any touch and the only way to get it back to live is to restart it completely (switching back to and from background does not help). No exception is thrown and nothing is printed to the console (I have Breakpoints set for all exception in Xcode). I have tried to debug it using Instruments (time profiles especially) to see if there is something hard going on on main thread but nothing is showing up. I am aware that GCD and Core Data are the main suspects here, but I have no idea how to track / debug this. Let me point out, that this also happens when I dispatch all the tasks to the queues asynchronously only (using dispatch_async everywhere). This makes me think it is not just standard deadlock. Is there any possibility or hints of how could I get more info what is going on? Some extra debug flags, Instruments magical tricks or build setting etc... Any suggestions on what could be the cause are very much appreciated as well as (or) pointers to how to implement background fetching for NSFetchedResultsController and background importing in better way.

• Javascript crc32 function and PHP crc32 not matching

  Hello everyone, I'm working on a webapp where I want to match some crc32 values that have been generated server side in PHP with some crc32 values that I am generating in Javascript. Both are using the same input string but returning different values. I found a crc32 javascript library on webtoolkit, found here: "http://www.webtoolkit.info/javascript-crc32.html" ... when I try and match a simple CRC32 value that I generate in PHP, for the life of me I can't generate the same matching value in the Javascript crc32 function. I tried adding a utf-8 language encoding meta tag to the top of my page with no luck. I've also tried adding a PHP utf8_encode() around the string before I enter it into the PHP crc32 function, but still no matching crc's .... Is this a character encoding issue? How do I get these two generated crc's to match? • Asp.net MVC/Silverlight and Sharepoint 2010 integration

  Just a sidenote: I'm not sure whether I should post this to serverfault as well, because some MOSS admin may have some info for me as well? Additional note 1: I've found this document (Asp.net MVC 2 & Sharepoint integration) if anybody with sufficient expirience is willing to comment on its content whether this can be used in my described scenario or not. Additional note 2: I've discovered (later) that Silverlight is supported in Sharepoint 2010 so I'm considering it as well. So if anyone would comment on silverlight integration as well. A bit of explanation first (without Asp.net MVC/Silverlight) Is it possible to integrate the two? Is it possible to write an application that would share at least credential information with MOSS? I have to write a MOSS application that has to do with these technologies: MOSS 2010 Personal client certificates authentication (most probably on USB keys) Active Directory Federation Services Separate SQL DB that would serve application specific data (separate as not being part of MOSS DB) How should it work? Users should authenticate using personal certificates into MOSS 2010 There would be a certain part of MOSS that would be related to my custom application This application should only authorize certain users via AD FS - I guess these users should have a certain security claim attached to them This application should manage users (that have access to this app) with additional (app specific) security claims related to this application (as additional application level authorization rights for individual application parts) This application should use custom SQL 2008 DB heavily with its own data This application should have the possibility to integrate with external systems as well (Exchange for instance to inject calendar entries, ERP systems etc) This application should be able to export its data (from its DB) to files. I don't know if it's possible, but it would be nice if the app could add these files to MOSS and attach authorization info to them so only users with sufficient rights would be able to view/open these files. Why Asp.net MVC/Silverlight then? I'm very well versed in Asp.net MVC (also with the latest version) and I haven't done anything on Sharepoint since version 2003 (which doesn't do me no good or prepare me for the latest version in any way shape or form). This project will most probably be a death march project so I would rather write my application as a UI rich Asp.net MVC application and somehow integrate it into MOSS. But not only via a link, because I would like to at least share credentials, so users wouldn't need to re-login when accessing my app. Using Asp.net MVC I would at least have the possibility to finish on time or be less death marching. Is this at all possible? I haven't done any serious project using SIlverlight, but I will sooner or later have to. So I'm also considering a jump into it at this moment, because it still might make this application development easier than strict Sharepoint 2010. Questions Is it possible to integrate Asp.net MVC/Silverlight into MOSS as described above? If integration is not possible, would it be possible to create a completely MOSS based application that would work as described? Which parts of MOSS 2010 should I use to accomplish what I need?

• Slow Jquery Animation

  I have this webpage : http://miloarc.pyrogenicmedia.com/ Which atm is nothing special. It has a few effects but none that break the bank. If you mouse over a tile, it should change it's opacity to give it a fade effect. This is done through the Jquery Animation, not through CSS (I do this so it can fade, instead of being a straight change). Everything looks nice when the page loads, and the fades look perfect. Infact if you drag your mouse all over the place, if gives you a "trail" almost like a snake. Anyway, My next problem is that you will see there is a box in the top left, which is going to tell you information about the tile you are hovering over. This seems to work fine. When you mouse over that information box, it switches it's position (So that you can reach the tiles that were previously hidden underneath it). From my understanding, this is all working fine, and to the letter. However, After one move of the info box (One hover). Viewing the page in Firefox turns slugish. As in, after a successful move of the info box, the fade effects become very stuttered, and it doesn't pick up events as fast meaning you can't draw a "trail" on the screen. Chrome doesn't have this issue. It seems to work fine no matter what. Safari also seems ok. Although I do notice if I move my mouse really fast, it does jump a bit but not as much as firefox. Internet explorer doesn't work at all. Seems to crash the browser... And there is an error with the rounded corner plugin im using (Not sure why...). All in all, I think whatever I'm doing inside my code must be heavily sluggish. But I don't know where it is happening.
