• Private cloud solution [Eucalyptus,OpenStack, Nimbus] for Java deployments [Glassfish, Tomcat]

  I am interested in a way to have private cloud which would host Glassfish (or Tomcat) server. Which option from Eucalyptus, Openstack or Nimbus would be best to deploy java applications on it? Or maybe there is something other and I am looking wrong at the problem? The way I imagine this, that I should have some shared storage that I could expand by introducing new nodes to this cluster and have easy management for glassfish instances: something like virtual machines images that I can start and stop on demand and that image is shared among nodes. I don't need concrete step-by-step solution here but guidelines how this should be done are very welcome.

• How to reliably take Java Heap Dumps?

  My team is running into difficulties when trying to take good heap dumps triggered by OutOfMemoryErrors. For specific reasons we are currently taking the dumps with jmap called from a bash script instead of using the HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError flag. We're using a 64-bit 1.6 JVM with a heap size around 3 GB. Our heap dumps fail 90% of the time (guesstimate). Is there anything we can do to improve our odds of getting a clean heap dump we can use to troubleshoot memory problems? I have read that jmap had major issues in Java 1.4 but that those issues should be mostly addressed now.

• Java 6.0 Virtual Machine re-caches application on every load

  I have a Java application which is loaded and cached by the JRE and for most users it only needs to cache once unless the application software has changed. However, I have one computer that caches the entire application every time they load it. It is not the version of the JRE, I have that running on other machines. It also works on this machine if logged in as a local admin, just not as a standard user. Does anybody have any ideas on what might be causing this?

• No sound from Java web applet

  Using Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers on Ubuntu 9.10, I am unable to get any sound out from Java (version 6 update 15) on Runescape or WebSDR. I'm only interested in getting WebSDR working and Runescape was the only other web applet I knew would have sound. Sound does work in a test applet I downloaded when run from the command line so it seems to be a web specific issue. Anyone else encountered or solved this or a similar issue? Are there any better applets out there that I can use to test my sound?

• Java and Tomcat issue

  All, At the end of my teather with this and really would appreciate any pointers. I have a system that was installed with Tomcat 5.5.9 and JRE 6 update 13. My issue is that someone has come along and installed tomcat 6 and JRE 5. By this simple action they have destroyed the apps that were originally running on the machine. I have tried to remove the tomcat and java install and from what I can see it has all been removed. My issue, I am now trying to re-install the oringinal app, but this installer now throughs up a file location error and will not re-install the apache part of the installer. Can anyone advise of any hidden location were the apache software may have installed components. This is all installed on Windows Server 2003 R2. Many thanks for your help in advance.

• Where to go to see an exception thrown by a browser based java app

  I have a java app that is running in my browser. At a specific point the app will crash. I would like to find the exception that is being thrown (if possible) so I can show it to the support of the company that makes the app. Is there a standard place for this? Or a way that capture it? (So I can prove that it is happening.) I am using Firefox, but could use IE if needed.

• Import Java Trusted Certificate to JRE

  I need to install a certificate from a Java app to a lot of people. I want to use a one click program or batch file to import it as a Trusted Certificate(in Control Panel-Security-Certificate). Then they won't need to press always allow first time they use the application. I have extracted the needed certificate as both a .csr and as a .cer (the .csr via Control Panel and the .cer via keytool). Now I need to get one of them back without any clicking in menus. I don't really understand the documentation of importing .cer with keytool and would like an example. Or are there an easier way than using keytool?

• Picking only the value field out of Cloudwatch Dimensions, Java

  I have some data that are retried from the cloudwatch api's. Specifically I have used listMetrics. The data that I got from this call is : {Metrics: [{Namespace: Metric from grails, MetricName: hello123, Dimensions: [{Name: name, Value: 1425, }], }, {Namespace: Metric from grails, MetricName: hello123, Dimensions: [{Name: name, Value: 1068, }], }, That was the correct data as I would expect. I need a way to return only the value fields. Not others things. Is there any way to do this, in java? Thanks in advance.

• Java application not starting in Tomcat, Plesk 9 server

  Hi I have a Plesk 9.3 CentOS 5 server on which I installed the addon to have Tomcat functions. One application I have uploaded appears in the Plesk Tomcat user panel but with a yellow exclamation mark and the error "Actual status of the application does not correspond to the status retrieved from the database". The app therefore does not run, while other uploaded test .war applications do. The server runs Tomcat tomcat5.5.23-0jpp.7.el5_2.1 which matches the requirements for the required app according the the company that made it. While searching for the solution I could find all 3 uploaded .war applications in /usr/share/tomcat5/psa-wars/domainhere.com/ but they do not seem uncompressed there even though 2 of them run fine. Not enough Tomcat / Java knowlede to go on... Any idea to help me here ? Best regards.

• Best blog package/platform (java, php etc)?

  Hi Folks, I want to set up a blog, but I want it to reside on a URL I've bought, I also don't want any of the ads and such that sit around other blogs on blog specific sites like blogspot and generally want more control. I was thinking of getting shared hosting with mysql and such to get it going (as opposed to a VM which would be overkill). Then I just need to decide on the easiest quickest (and most secure) way of getting something up there. After some googling, I see b2evolution.net which sits on php, or Apache Roller, which seems to sit on Java. Could anyone offer any advice on whats my best approach here? Are there security concerns with either or has anyone any experience in this area? I really want setup time to be minimal, so I can concentrate of the feel of the blog rather than whats under the hood. Many Thanks.

• Prevent Java application from accessing/monitoring/altering clipboard contents

  I'm a student using a service that provides practice questions for standardized tests. The service requires that I access the questions by downloading and running a Java application. If I try to copy anything from any window of my computer (including applications unrelated to the question bank) while the application is running, the copied item is replaced with an obnoxious message asking me to not pirate their copyrighted material. I find this obnoxious, and I also really don't like the idea that any application can slurp up any and all potentially sensitive information that I happen to copy while it's running. Is there are a way to limit the privileges of this application to stop it from doing this? Thank you!

• Multiple Java Apps on single Server

  What is the best way to host potentially dozens of fairly trivial Java web applications on a single machine? These will be for different clients, and so having them isolated from each other is important, so that if one goes down, they don't all go down. I realize Tomcat can handle multiple apps on its own, but having them all run in a single tomcat instance sounds a little scary to me. An instance of tomcat per app also seems silly, since these apps are likely to be fairly basic. Any thoughts?

• How do I display the Java console?

  I'm aware of the fact that you can set it to "show" in the Java control panel, but that's not what I'm asking about. I'm curious about the other options... "Do not start" is pretty straightforward, but what about "Hide"? That would seem to imply that it is indeed running. If so, how can I make it show on demand from the hidden state? Reason: It's annoying to have it open ALL the time, hoping there's a way to (preferably via keystroke) bring it from "hidden" to "shown" state for occasional debugging.

Stephen Chin, a Java Champion, is co-author of the Pro JavaFX Platform 2, while Java Champion Peter Pilgrim is an independent consultant who works out of London.NightHacking with Stephen ChinBefore discussing the tutorial, a note about Chin’s “NightHacking Tour,” wherein from 10/29/12 to 11/11/12, he will be traveling across Europe via motorcycle stopping at JUGs and interviewing Java developers and offering live video streaming of the journey. As he says, “Along the way, I will visit user groups, interviewing interesting folks, and hack on open source projects. The last stop will be the Devoxx conference in Belgium.”It’s a dirty job but someone’s got to do it. His trip will take him from the UK through the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, and finally to Devoxx in Belgium. He has interviews lined up with Ben Evans, Trisha Gee, Stephen Coulebourne, Martijn Verburg, Simon Ritter, Bert Ertman, Tony Epple, Adam Bien, Michael Hutterman, Sven Reimers, Andres Almiray, Gerrit Grunewald, Bertrand Boetzmann, Luc Duponcheel, Stephen Janssen, Cheryl Miller, and Andrew Phillips. The “JavaFX 2 – A Java Developer’s Guide” tutorial introduced Java developers to the JavaFX 2 platform from the perspective of seasoned Java developers. It demonstrated the breadth of the JavaFX APIs through examples that are built out in the course of the session in an effort to present the basic requirements in using JavaFX to build rich internet applications. Chin began with a quote from Oracle’s Christopher Oliver, the creator of F3, the original version of JavaFX, on the importance of GUIs:“At the end of the day, on the one hand we have computer systems, and on the other, people. Connecting them together, and allowing people to interact with computer systems in a compelling way, requires graphical user interfaces.”Chin explained that JavaFX is about producing an immersive application experience that involves cross-platform animation, video and charting. It can integrate Java, JavaScript and HTML in the same application. The new graphics stack takes advantage of hardware acceleration for 2D and 3D applications. In addition, we can integrate Swing applications using JFXPanel.He reminded attendees that they were building JavaFX apps using pure Java APIs that included builders for declarative construction; in addition, alternative languages can be used for simpler UI creation. In addition, developers can call upon alternative languages such as GroovyFX, ScalaFX and Visage, if they want simpler UI creation. He presented the fundamentals of JavaFX 2.0: properties, lists and binding and then explored primitive, object and FX list collection properties. Properties in JavaFX are observable, lazy and type safe. • Customer Spotlight - CSX: Charles Pack

  A couple of weeks ago, I had the distinct privilege of facilitating a training session with CSX.  CSX is a wonderful customer.  They've been a dedicated Oracle customer for many years. They have quite an extensive Oracle footprint including Server Technologies, Fusion Middleware and E-Business Suite products.  They also utilize Oracle's Solution Support Center offering from Advanced Customer Services, for their Database products. I'm always on the lookout for Oracle gems and I discovered one at CSX. Before my session began, I met with Charles Pack.  In my view, he's an Oracle guru.  Don't take my word for it, just read any of the books he's authored or co-authored and the one soon to be released.  Just looking at his bookshelf, I saw titles going back to Oracle 7 & 8, as well as a Solaris 2.x book.  Remember those?   Anyway, Charles is a technologist and a manager (and wears numerous other hats too).  I had a wonderful time talking with Charles and getting to know him.  What do you consider keys to your personal success?  Inability to quit.  When I decide that I will accomplish something, I will, regardless of the nature of the challenge.  Never quitting means a perpetual drive for change and progress and setting examples for others to follow.  The reason I write OCP books is because I can provide a path for people to improve their knowledge of the product, gain a certification, and reach their professional goals. What do you consider the most important part of your job?  Negotiations.  We all have competing goals, incentives and finite resources, but we should all have the same common goal – progress.  So finding the way for all parties to progress is the most important thing we do. What is the most important part of your relationship with Oracle?  Oracle provides solutions – not just products - that are critical to our business success.  So continuous communication regarding education, services, product roadmaps and shared goals is the most important part of our ongoing relationship. • MySql Connector/NET 6.7.4 GA has been released

  MySQL Connector/Net 6.7.4, a new version of the all-managed .NET driver for MySQL has been released.  This is the GA, is feature complete. It is recommended for production environments.  It is appropriate for use with MySQL server versions 5.0-5.7.  It is now available in source and binary form from http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/net/#downloads and mirror sites (note that not all mirror sites may be up to date at this point-if you can't find this version on some mirror, please try again later or choose another download site.) The 6.7 version of MySQL Connector/Net brings the following new features: -  WinRT Connector. -  Load Balancing support. -  Entity Framework 5.0 support. -  Memcached support for Innodb Memcached plugin. -  This version also splits the product in two: from now on, starting version 6.7, Connector/NET will include only the former Connector/NET ADO.NET driver, Entity Framework and ASP.NET providers (Core libraries of MySql.Data, MySql.Data.Entity & MySql.Web). The My Oracle Support and Enterprise Manager user research team will be in action.  If you are someone who does patching, edits configurations, or uses either MOS configuration management (the collector) OR Enterprise Manager configuration compare or search, we have a treat for you!  Come give us your feedback on how you do your tasks, what needs you have, and how we can do better in this space. We will be doing this during OOW, but an OOW badge is not required to participate.  OR If you are someone who downloads large amounts of software (say, the entire EBS stack) and wants to understand how one customize a "recommended" stack of software for yourself, or your customers, let us know!  We have a study looking at how to create, customize and download all of the software needed for an installation. • OpenWorld: Our (Road) Maps are Looking Good!

  Wow, only one (or two) days down at Oracle OpenWorld! Are you on overload yet? I'm still trying to figure out how to be in 3 sessions at the same time... I guess everyone needs to prioritize! There was a lot to see in Monday's sessions, especially some great forward-looking roadmap sessions. In case you aren't here or you decided to go to other sessions, this is my quick summary of what I could capture from a couple of the roadmaps: In the Fusion CRM Strategy and Roadmap session, Anthony Lye provided an overview of the Fusion CRM strategy including the key design principles of 3 E's: Easy, Effective and Efficient. After an overview of how Oracle has deployed Fusion CRM internally to 25,000 users worldwide, Anthony discussed the features coming in the next release, the releases in the next 12 months and beyond. I can't detail too much since you haven't read Oracle's Safe Harbor statement, but check out Fusion Tap and look for new features and added functionality for sales prediction, marketing, social and integration with a number of the key Customer Experience products.  In the Oracle RightNow CX Cloud Service Vision and Roadmap session, Chris Hamilton presented the focus areas for the RightNow product. As a result of the large increase in development resources after the acquisition, the RightNow CX team is planning a lot of enhancements to the functionality, infrastructure and integrations. As a key piece of the Oracle Customer Experience (CX) strategy, RightNow will be integrated with Oracle Social Network, Oracle Commerce (ATG and Endeca), Oracle Knowledge, Oracle Policy Automation and, of course, further integration with Fusion Sales and Marketing. Look forward to seeing more on the Virtual Assistant, Smart Interaction Hub and Mobility. In addition to the roadmaps, I was looking forward to hearing from Oracle CRM customers. So, I sat in on two great Siebel customer panels: The Maximizing User Adoption Rates for Siebel Sales and Siebel Partner Relationship Management panel consisted of speakers from CSL Behring, McKesson and Intuit. It was great to get an overview of implementations for both B2B and B2C companies. It was great hearing that all of these companies have more than 1,000 sales users (Intuit has 4,000) and how the 360 degree view of the customer in Siebel is helping these customers improve their customers' experience (CX). They are all great examples of centralized implementations which have standardized processes across the globe and across business units.  Waste Management, Farmers Insurance and the US Citizenship & Immigration Services presented in the Driving Great Customer Experiences with Siebel Service Applications session. Talk about serving large customer bases! Is it possible that Farmers with only 10 million households is the smallest of these 3? All of them provided great examples of how they are improving the customer experience (CX) including 60-70% improvements in efficiency or reducing the number of applications the customer service reps (CSRs) need to use from 10 to 1 (Waste Management) and context aware call transfers to avoid the caller explaining their issue 3 times (USCIS). So that's my wrap up of only 4 sessions from Monday. In between sessions, I stopped by the Oracle DEMOgrounds and CRM Pavilion to visit with a group of great partners and see the products and partner integrations in action.
