• Unable to connect to Wireless after installing Ubuntu 12.10

  I am using Asus U56E laptop and after installing Ubuntu 12.10 alongside Windows 8, I am unable to connect to the Wireless. I have been trying to solve this problem since two weeks and couldn't solve it. Please help. Any answer would be appreciated. • Ubuntu 12.04 + Wifi not working

  i'm having problems connecting over wireless. At the moment, I'm using wicd. It seems to get stuck on "Verifying AP association...". Without wicd I can get the connection up and ping the Net - but if I take eth0 down (ifconfig eth0 down), my wireless goes away too (same result if I unplug the wire instead). wicd is the only way I can bring eth0 back (which is the main reason I'm using it) - ifconfig eth0 and/or ifup eth0 do not re-enable the connection (I just discovered it leaves out the gateway. Adding the gateway back in re-enables the connection including wifi; I didn't want to delete the info about wicd above in case it gives someone an idea.) • Wireless networks are not detected at start up in Ubuntu 12.04

  I have recently (three four days ago) installed Ubuntu 12.04 via windows installer i.e. wubi.exe. After the installation completed wireless and Ethernet were both working well. But after restart wireless networks didn't show up while in the network manager both networking and wireless were enabled. Though sometimes after boot it did show the networks available but very rarely. So I went through various posts regarding wireless issues in Ubuntu 12.04 and tried so many things but ended up in nothing satisfactory. I have Broadcom 4313 LAN network controller and brcmsmac driver. Then relying on some suggestions I tried to install bcm-wl driver but couldn't install due to some error in jockeyl.log file. Then i tried fresh installation of the same driver but still could resolve the startup issues with wireless. Then again I reinstalled Ubuntu inside windows using wubi installer. This time again same problem occurred after boot. But this time I successfully installed wl driver before disturbing file-system files of Ubuntu. But again the same issue. This time I noticed some new things: If I inserted Ethernet/LAN cable before startup then wireless networks are available and of course LAN(wired) networks also work. but if i don't plug in cable before startup and then plug it after startup then it didn't detect Ethernet network neither wireless. So I haven't noticed it before that LAN along with wifi also doesn't work after startup. But if i suspend the session and make it sleep and again login then it worked. I tried it every time that WLAN worked perfectly. But still i m unable to resolve that startup problem. Each time i boot first I have to suspend it once then only networks are available. It irritates me each time i reboot/boot my lappy. So please help out of this problem. Any ideas/help regarding this issue would be highly appreciated. • "CB Monitor Windows" proccess blocks XP shutdown

  I've got a home server. Simple, low-power-consumption Intel Atom based PC built by me. It runs XP since Win7 was an overkill for this poor thing. Everything was OK, always used Avast! antivirus + Spybot. However, it stopped shutting down after a while. Few days ago I noticed a "CB Monitor Windows" proccess is blocking this (didn't quit from rdp after sending the shutdown command). What is this proccess? How can I disable/remove it? Tried Malwarebytes, found ONE malware, removed it, did a reboot, no change. Avast is up-to-date, Spybot is the same. What could I do?

• Windows Server Backup "Reading Data; please wait..."

  On windows Server 2008 R2 I have recently added the windows server backup (WSB) feature. Opening WSB I get the message "Reading Data; please wait...". This message fails to go away, even after leaving the server for over 12 hours. I also notice in the task manager that svchost.exe (username: networkservice) is using all available processing power. So I terminated that process and then WSB comes on-line. However after restarting the server and WSB the issue reoccurs. WSB also fails to recognize my store-in-go flash drive (2gb). What is the underlying problem here?

  I discovered that in IRST there is an option to set a cache mode for my 3 ssd raid 0 array. I've read the documentation by Intel and have some questions: Are there any overall benefits/risks from enabling cache mode? As I'm on a laptop, would write back be recommended? I read it increases chance of data loss on power interruption. What is the difference between how windows handles data integrity and the intel driver? Read only mode seems to have the benefit of faster reads, does it have any downsides? Thanks for your help guys!

• Dell Optiplex 980 vs. Dell Studio XPS 9000?

  My company is allowing me to upgrade to either the XPS 9000 or the Optiplex 980. I haven't bought an Optiplex in over a decade, and the only thing I can remember is that the Optiplex is really meant for corporate IT environments, and we're not even close being large enough to have IT issues. I think the components might be of higher quality as well, like the motherboard and power supply. The XPS 9000 is about $150 cheaper than the Optiplex, but the Optiplex has 4GB more RAM, a 2nd video card, and an extra year of service. Seems like the Optiplex is a better deal overall, but since I haven't ever used one, I wanted to see what everyone else here thought.

  I am using a Belkin G Wireless Router F5D7234, and i have a DSL connection with only a ethernet cable. So i connected the cable to the Modem port and allowed it to use Dyanmic IP, it worked successfully and an ip was assigned to it and multiple computers could connect to it and browse. But after some time the power went off and after then upon rebooting it is taking about half hour to get an IP address.   I recently bought a UPS, however, the only outlets take this sort of connector: But, the other end of the cables is like this (right): The thing is, I really need to connect it to a power bar, so I need a cable that has one end like in the first photo, and the second end like this (right side): I've searched around for quite a while, and asked at a few shops, but cannot seem to find a cable that will fulfill this purpose. This seems crazy to me, as I would think that a UPS wouldn't only be able to be attached to devices that take the relatively obscure output seen on the right side of the second image I posted. Do I need to buy another UPS that has the proper connectors?? Please help!!

• WDS "No response" only when notify and wait for approval

  I have a WDS server setup for use with MDT2010, and everything was working fine until this morning. Now, whenever I try to boot from LAN, I get an error: Downloaded WDSNBP... Architecture: x64 WDSNBP started using DHCP Referral. Contacting Server: 10.50.10.12 (Gateway: 0.0.0.0) No response from Windows Deployment Services server. Launching pxeboot.com My PXE Response Policy setting on the WDS is set to this: [ ] Do not respond to any client computer [ ] Respond only to known client computers [o] Respond to all (known and unknown) client computers [X] For unknown clients, notify administrator and respond after approval The odd thing is that if I clear the approval option (so any computer gets a response) it works fine. I have delegated permissions on the AD OU to the computer object WDS is running on, but that doesn't seem to have helped. As it works without approval, I can only assume my DHCP options are fine and this is some sort of AD permission problem. (Server is Windows Server 2008 SP2)

  When you first power on a 5524, connected via the serial console, you are offered a setup wizard where you can enter the management IP/Net/Gateway and enter the admin password. HOWEVER, if you dont do this in 60 seconds, the wizard dissapears, and there seems to be no way to run it again - even if you reboot the box. No commands work in the CLI, it just gives you this prompt: If you type say enable, or login, it gives: >login Unknown parameter May be one from the following list: debug help So no commands seem to work. The CLI reference guide does not seem to have any way to run the wizard, or to set the management port or admin passwords. So by not responding in 60 secons after boot, the unit is bricked. Any ideas?

• MacBook Pro - 7200 vs 5400 rpm drives - Heat and Noise

  I am looking at a new 15" MacBook Pro for development purposes. I am planning to run a Virtual Machine for about 50% of my work (Windows 7 x64, IIS, SQL Server, and VS 2010). The upgrade from a 5400 rpm drive to a 7200 rpm is only $45. From what I understand the faster rotational speed of the 7200 rpm drive will help virtual machine performance. However, I am concerned that additional heat and fan noise might be an issue. I will be running mostly on A/C power so decreased battery life is not a major concern for me. Since I would be running with a Core i7 processor which gives off a fair amount of heat already I was wondering if it might be best to stay at 5400 rpm for the hard drive. What do you all think? I'm guessing I've set something up wrong here but I've just followed a tutorial 100% correctly!! If anyone could help I'd be very grateful! Thanks EDIT: According to this blog, this post and a few other websites, I'm not the only one getting this problem. It has been like this since the release of xCode 3.2, assuming the apple dev center documents and tutorials etc are pre-3.2 as well. However some say its a known issue whereas others seem to think this was intentional. I for one would like both the extended console and in code messages, and I certainly do not like the "Command /bin/sh..." error and really think they would have documented such an update. Hopefully it will be fixed soon anyway. UPDATE: Here's confirmation it's something changed since the release of xCode 3.2.1. This image: is from my test build using 3.2.1. • inaccessible_boot_device after p2v Windows 2000 Pro SP4 to Workstation 6.5

  I am using the latest VMware Converter Standalone to p2v a physical Windows 2000 Professional SP4 PC. The PC is a standard Pentium with IDE disk from circa 2001. The disk is 20GB partitioned logically into C: and D. It converts with no errors (I did both disks into one VMDK). When I power on the VM in VMware Workstation 6.5 (or Vmware Player 2.5) it gets to the Win 2000 boot graphic then I get a BSOD with the classic 0x7B Stop error: inaccessible_boot_device. Is there anything I can do to get the vm to boot? I am lost for ideas, normally p2v of a basic IDE pc works flawlessly. I'm willing to put a bounty on this as I am trying to sort this out for a client urgently.

• ESXi and Windows Server CPU parking

  For those that don't know, CPU parking is a feature in recent Windows Server releases that allows Windows to pretty much drop a CPU core to zero use, and having nothing use it. It's been introduced as a power-saving measure. There's more detail about it here, amongst other places. However what I'm curious about is whether this matter on a virtualised guest - or is CPU parking more of a hindrance than a help, given that the physical CPUs are managed by ESXi, not Windows, and that a parked CPU is less likely to deal with traffic unless the scheduler deems there's enough work to unpark the CPU? I've not found anything about this - I do suspect it will be very much based on a given workload, but I've not seen any discussion (unlike, say, whether hyper-threading has any effect, which seems to be discussed regularly). Whilst I do understand the "test with your workload" I was wondering if there was any advice/guidelines out there that I've missed.

• Enable VT-x in HP 8300 elite

  I have a HP 8300 elite (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz). I'm trying to run a virtual machine via VirtualBox. But every time I start the VM, it says: VT-x is disabled in the BIOS. (VERR_VMX_MSR_VMXON_DISABLED). My lscpu output is like this: Architecture: x86_64 CPU op-mode(s): 32-bit, 64-bit Byte Order: Little Endian CPU(s): 8 On-line CPU(s) list: 0-7 Thread(s) per core: 2 Core(s) per socket: 4 Socket(s): 1 NUMA node(s): 1 Vendor ID: GenuineIntel CPU family: 6 Model: 58 Stepping: 9 CPU MHz: 1600.000 BogoMIPS: 6784.74 Virtualization: VT-x L1d cache: 32K L1i cache: 32K L2 cache: 256K L3 cache: 8192K NUMA node0 CPU(s): 0-7 I went into the BIOS but the things the can be tweaked is very limited and I couldn't find the VT-x setting. Anybody know how to do this in this setup?

• Load Average runaway

  Is there any way to chase down lockups and runaway load averages? Every so often (pretty randomly) I'll get my load average spike up over 5 usually to around 10-15 and sometimes as high as 75 (dual core machine), and cause my system to lock for an indeterminate amount of time. The only thing I can possibly chase it to is using nVidia fakeraid (RAID-1) with JFS on top of that for my /home partition. Also I noticed that when my load averages spike, the power management system doesn't step up my processor speed from 1.6 to its maximum 2.13Ghz clock speed (not sure if this makes a huge difference with this problem). Any ideas?

• Windows 7 random black screen when idle

  Occasionally, when I'm away from my computer for about 5 minutes, the computer screen will go black and all USB devices (keyboard/mouse) will lose power. Attempting to move the mouse or pressing keys does not 'wake up' the computer. This only started happening a few days ago but I'm not sure what changes I did could have caused this and I uninstalled programs (one by one) I installed before it started happening, but still having the same issue. The one thing I noticed different about my computer since it started happening is i've been getting random survey popups from www.insightexpress.com. I ran Microsoft Security Essentials scan, it picked up some Java related malware, I removed it but still the same issue. I'm running MBAM right now and will run SAS after.

• VMFS recovery - how do you proceed?

  The more I look into ESX the more often i have to handle cases where the partition table of a disk with a VMFS volume gets corrupted. The reasons for this can be * idiot user * failed update * power failure * .... I guess you guys must already have something like a usual procedure on how to work through this cases. I am especially interested in a straight fast way to find out if the VMFS volume itself is corrupted beyond repair. So far I use very time consuming attempts with scans with Testdisk and similar tools. Do you have better / faster ways ?

• How to add “chapters” or “bookmarks” to movies?

  Is there an easy way to add chapters to existing movie files? Note: Actually, I’m not 100% sure if they’re called “chapters” in video files, but it’s the same concept as DVDs. I assume this differs with the video encoding, but any help at all is progress! I have video files in various formats (although .mov, .mp4, and .m4v are my most common). I’m on Mac OS X, but I posted here (instead of the Apple Q&A) because I figured any answers may be useful to other non-Apple power users. Apple-native, application-based solutions preferred (usability is top of my list). However, command-line programs and utilities that do the job are just as welcome. Please share any indirect-but-related wisdom you may have on this topic. Thanks!

• New build won't POST, no video, no beeps

  Specs: Motherboard: MSI 760GM-P23 FX Integrated graphics (on MoBo) CPU: AMD Athlon II x4 640 RAM: GeIL Pristine 4GB DDR3 Case/PSU: TOPOWER TP-4107BB-400 Is not POSTing, no video output, no beeps. When RAM is removed, 3 beeps. I have tried removing and replacing the CPU and all the power cables with no change. Resetting the BIOS (by removing and replacing the battery) did nothing as well. Is there something I'm forgetting (1st time building from components), or could one of the components be bad? EDIT: New development: with CPU and RAM installed correctly, it will turn on lights and fans (still no POST) and after running for a minute or so it will turn off and the PSU will make a buzzing noise that ceases only when unplugged.

• How to charge an iPhone on a Windows PC without Installing iTunes

  I want to be able to charge my iPhone on my work computer, which is running Windows Server 2008 SP1 64-Bit. When I plug the iPhone in with the USB cable, it will not charge. Windows attempts to locate a driver for the device but only comes up with a generic Camera device and even if I allow that to be installed, the iPhone still does not charge. I have checked the computer's BIOS settings and did not find anything relating to power on the USB devices. I also tried this on ports at the back of the computer in addition to those on the front. The PC is a Dell Optiplex 780. As far as I can tell USB devices do not charge unless Windows has installed an appropriate driver. Since it is a work computer I do not want to install iTunes which does include a driver. I have a workaround that I will post as an answer for reference.
