• Getting the count of rows in a Java resultset

  Hello Does anyone know a better way of getting the number of rows in a Java resultset returned from a MySQL database? I'm currently using this: public static int getResultSetRowCount(ResultSet resultSet) { int size = 0; try { resultSet.last(); size = resultSet.getRow(); resultSet.beforeFirst(); } catch(Exception ex) { return 0; } return size; } But am open to alternatives. The resultset returned is not going to be the total number of rows read from the database so I don;t think I can use SQL COUNT. Thanks Mr Morgan.

• Optimizing a 3D World Javascript Animation

  Hi! I've recently come up with the idea to create a tag cloud like animation shaped like the earth. I've extracted the coastline coordinates from ngdc.noaa.gov and wrote a little script that displayed it in my browser. Now as you can imagine, the whole coastline consists of about 48919 points, which my script would individually render (each coordinate being represented by one span). Obviously no browser is capable of rendering this fluently - but it would be nice if I could render as much as let's say 200 spans (twice as much as now) on my old p4 2.8 Ghz (as a representative benchmark). Are there any javascript optimizations I could use in order to speed up the display of those spans? • Overlay 2d weapon sprite over character sprite ?

  Hello, I'm working on a game where my character needs to be able to have different weapons. For that I think that somehow overlaying the weapon over the moving sprite would be the correct choice, but I'm not sure about how could I do this. Assuming my Character spritesheet looks like this: And my preliminar weapon spritesheet ( haven't decided on a fixed square size for the weapon yet ), looks like this: How would you make the overlay to set the weapon correctly over the character hand for each of his frames? I know that one way would be just to have a weapon frame the same size as my character sprites, and overlay those too, but I think that if the game has way too much weapons (say 15 different kinds of one hand weaps) this could get pretty insane ( having one weapon sprite sheet the same size as the character sprite sheet for each type of weapon ) Do you guys have any advice on how to implement this? (supporting overlaying the weapon sprites over the character sprites) Thanks!

• Making large toolbars like the iPod app

  I am trying to create a toolbar programatically (rather than via IB) very similar to the toolbar featured in the iPhone app. Currently I've been experimenting with the UIToolbar class, but I'm not sure how (and if?) you can make the toolbar buttons centrally aligned and large like that in the iPod app. Additionally, regardless of size, the gradient/reflection artwork never correctly respects the size and is stuck as if the object is the default smaller size. If this cannot be done with a standard UIToolbar, I guess I need to create my own view. In this case, can the reflection/gradient be created programmatically or will it require some clever alpha tranparency Photoshopped artwork?

• UITableViewCell repeating problem

  I have a UItableview with cells. Some cells have uilabels and some have uibuttons. The UIbuttons are created whenever the first character in an array is "^". However, the uibuttons repeat when i scroll down (appearing over the uilabel).. and then multiply over the uilabels when I scroll up. Any clues why? • Linux core dumps are too large!

  Hey guys, Recently I've been noticing an increase in the size of the core dumps generated by my application. Initially, they were just around 5MB in size and contained around 5 stack frames, and now I have core dumps of 2GBs and the information contained within them are no different from the smaller dumps. Is there any way I can control the size of core dumps generated? Shouldn't they be at least smaller than the application binary itself? Binaries are compiled in this way: Compiled in release mode with debug symbols (ie, -g compiler option in GCC). Debug symbols are copied onto a separate file and stripped from the binary. A GNU debug symbols link is added to the binary. At the beginning of the application, there's a call to setrlimit which sets the core limit to infinity -- Is this the problem?

  I am running Kubuntu 13.10 on a Lenovo G500 laptop. My question is similar to this one: How can I remap my F keys on my HP laptop? That is to say, my F1-F12 keys are mapped to certain special functions, and only holding down the Fn key restores access to the standard F1-F12 keys. How do I remap certain keys? I would like to know if there is a way to remap Fx to Fn+Fx and vice-versa. As per the instructions of #87043 I checked my BIOS and there is no option to switch the Fx/Fn key functionality. Googling through Leonovo's support forums indicates a BIOS update enabling this is in the works, but there's no indication of when it will be complete. Using xev I was able to see what X sees when F1-F12 are pressed.   I have a "shipping" form that I want to offer users the ability to copy their input values over to their "billing" form by simply checking a checkbox. I've coded up a solution that works -- but, I'm sort of new to jQuery and wanted some criticism on how I went about achieving this. Is this well done -- any refactorings you'd recommend? • Image processing in a multhithreaded mode using Java

  Hi Folks, I am supposed to process images in a multithreaded mode using Java. I may having varying number of images where as my number of threads are fixed. I have to process all the images using the fixed set of threads. I am just stuck up on how to do it, I had a look ThreadExecutor and BlockingQueues etc...I am still not clear. What I am doing is, - Get the images and add them in a LinkedBlockingQueue which has runnable code of the image processor. - Create a threadpoolexecutor for which one of the arguements is the LinkedBlockingQueue earlier. - Iterate through a for loop till the queue size and do a threadpoolexecutor.execute(linkedblockingqueue.poll). - all i see is it processes only 100 images which is the minimum thread size passed in LinkedBlockingQueue size. I see I am seriously wrong in my understanding somewhere, how do I process all the images in sets of 100(threads) until they are all done? Any examples or psuedocodes would be highly helpful Thanks! • How to Apply a Business Card Template to a Contact and Customize it in Outlook 2013

  If you want to add a business card template to an existing contact in Outlook, you can do so without having to enter all of the information again. We will also show you how to customize the layout and format of the text on the card. Microsoft provides a couple of business card templates you can use. We will use their Blue Sky template as an example. To open the archive file for the template you downloaded, double-click on the .cab file. NOTE: You can also use a tool like 7-Zip to open the archive. A new Extract tab becomes available under Compressed Folder Tools and the files in the archive are listed. Select the .vcf file in the list of files. This automatically activates the Extract tab. Click Extract To and select a location or select Choose location if the desired location is not on the drop-down menu. Select a folder in which you want to save the .vcf file on the Copy Items dialog box and click Copy. NOTE: Use the Make New Folder button to create a new folder for the location, if desired. Double-click on the .vcf file that you copied out of the .cab archive file. By default, .vcf files are associated with Outlook so, when you double-click on a .vcf file, it automatically opens in a Contact window in Outlook. Change the Full Name to match the existing contact to which you want to apply this template. Delete the other contact info from the template. If you want to add any additional information not in the existing contact, enter it. Click Save & Close to save the contact with the new template. The Duplicate Contact Detected dialog box displays. To update the existing contact, select the Update information of selected Contact option. Click Update. NOTE: If you want to create a new contact from this template, select the Add new contact option. With the Contacts folder open (the People link on the Navigation Bar), click Business Card in the Current View section of the Home tab. You may notice that not all the fields from your contact display on the business card you just updated. Double-click on the contact to update the contact and the business card. On the Contact window, right-click on the image of the business card and select Edit Business Card from the popup menu. The Edit Business Card dialog box displays. You can change the design of the card, including changing he background color or image. The Fields box allows you to specify which fields display on the business card and in what order. Notice, in our example, that Company is listed below the Full Name, but no text displays on the business card below the name. That’s because we did not enter any information for Company in the Contact. We have information in Job Title. So, we select Company and click Remove to remove that field. Now, we want to add Job Title. First, select the field below which you want to add the new field. We select Full Name to add the Job Title below that. Then, we click Add and select Organization | Job Title from the popup menu to insert the Job Title. To make the Job Title white like the name, we select Job Title in the list of Fields and click the Font Color button in the Edit section. On the Color dialog box, select the color you want to use for the text in the selected field. Click OK. You can also make text bold, italic, or underlined. We chose to make the Job Title bold and the Full Name bold and italic. We also need to remove the Business Phone because this contact only has a mobile phone number. So, we add a Mobile Phone from the Phone submenu. Then, we need to remove enough blank lines so the Mobile Phone is visible on the card. We also added a website and email address and removed more blank lines so they are visible. You can also move text to the right side of the card or make it centered on the card. We also changed the color of the bottom three lines to blue. Click OK to accept your changes and close the dialog box. Your new business card design displays on the Contact window. Click Save & Close to save the changes you made to the business card for this contact and close the Contact window. The final design of the business card displays in the Business Card view on the People screen. If you have a signature that contains the business card for the contact you just updated, you will also need to update the signature by removing the business card and adding it again using the Business Card button in the Signature editor. You can also add the updated Business Card to a signature without the image or without the vCard (.vcf) file.

• Texture allocations being doubled in iPhone OpenGL ES

  The below couple lines are called 15 times during initialization. The tx-size is reported at 512 everytime, so this will allocate a 1mb image in memory 15 times, for a total of 15mb used.. However, I noticed instruments is reporting a total of 31 allocations! (15*2)+1 glTexImage2D(GL_TEXTURE_2D, 0, GL_RGBA, tx-size, tx-size, 0, GL_RGBA, GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE, spriteData); free(spriteData); Likewise in another area of my program that allocates 6 256x256x4 (256kB) textures.. I see 13 sitting there. (6*2)+1 Anyone know what's going on here? It seems like awful memory management, and I really hope it's my fault. Just to let everyone know, I'm on the simulator.

  Hello there. I have a question on the java applet.I've created a java applet,which is a board game,that can have a 2*2 array with row number and column number both set to 9 by default. Now I want to extend my applet a bit,that the user can specify the size they want on the command-line,then the applet class will create an applet with correspoding size. I try to add a constructor in the applet class,but the Eclipse complains,I also tried another class,which will create an instance of this applet with size as an instance variable,but it is not working. Could anyone help me a little bit on where to put a main() method that can take care of user-specified board sized,then create an array in my applet class accordingly? Thanks a lot. Rob

• Sorting Table Cells based on data from NSArray

  Hi, I have an NSArray which contains information from an RSS feed on dogs, such as [dog types], [dog age] and [dog size]. At the moment my UITableView simply displays each cell on each dog and within the cell lists [dog types], [dog age] and [dog size]. I want to be able to allow users of my app to "sort" this data based on the dog name, dog size or dog age when they press a UIButton in the top nav-bar. I'm struggling to work out how to filter the UITableView based on these factors, so any help is appreciated. Thanks.

• Will MyISAM type tables work better than InnoDB for large numbers of columns?

  I have a MySQL InnoDB table with 238 columns. 56 of them are TEXT type, 27 are VARCHAR(255). I am getting MySQL error 139 when users insert data sometimes. After research I found that I'm probably running into InnoDB row size/column size/column count limitations. (I'm putting it that way because the specific limits among those three things are interdependent.) Docs on InnoDB give an idea of the limits. If I switch this table to MyISAM is it likely to solve the problem? I understand the maximum row size of 65,535 bytes. I think I'm hitting InnoDB's additional 8000 byte limit somehow. Switching to PostgreSQL is also a remote option, but would take much longer.
