  • JPEG images not loading on PlayBook (Marmalade + iwgame)

    I'm using iwgame on a test project and I was trying to render different resolutions of JPG and PNG images. Everything works fine on the Marmalade Simulator, however once I deploy the game to our PlayBook and run it, only the PNG images are shown. I have declared the images in the MKB file and on a XML file iwgame's using to load the images. I've checked the deployments folder and all images are present in the intermediatefiles/native folder. We're currently using a BlackBerry only license, so we can only test this on the PlayBook, but we do intend to get a Community license and deploy to iOS and Android devices eventually (I'm not sure if this is a problem exclusive to the PlayBook). I really don't know if this is a Marmalade or a iwgame issue. I have a different test project without iwgame and it simply won't run with jpg images (I get the error: 'Could not find handler for extension "jpg"'). While searching for a sollution, I've seen people talking about using libjpg, but I've also found that Marmalade supposedly has integrated native jpeg support (and because of that iwgame has abandoned their jpeg loading support since v0.340), so I don't know what to think. I'm currently using the most recent versions of both Marmalade and iwgame, I believe: Marmalade 6.1.2 and iwgame 0.400. Also, please let me know if there's an easier or better way to do this, such as linking libjpg or something (I'm not exactly sure how to do this). I really would appreciate some help with this, there's a huge difference in size for the images we're planning to use, from a ~500kb jpg file to a ~3.5mb png file. Thanks, guys.

    Hi All, We have a problem related Exchange Server 2010 Activesync.My problem is;When I connecting to activesync from outside, I am receiving the following error. ExRCA is testing Exchange ActiveSync. The Exchange ActiveSync test failed. Test Steps Attempting to resolve the host name mail.xxxxx.com in DNS. The host name resolved successfully. Additional Details IP addresses returned: xx.0.x3.4 Testing TCP port 443 on host mail.x.com to ensure it's listening and open. The port was opened successfully. Testing the SSL certificate to make sure it's valid. The SSL certificate failed one or more certificate validation checks. Test Steps Validating the certificate name. Certificate name validation failed. Tell me more about this issue and how to resolve it Additional Details Host name mail.x.com doesn't match any name found on the server certificate CN=xxxxxx.   • PASS: The Legal Stuff

    I wanted to give a little background on the legal status of PASS.  The Professional Association for SQL Server (PASS) is an American corporation chartered in the state of Illinois.  In America a corporation has to be chartered in a particular state.  It has to abide by the laws of that state and potentially pay taxes to that state.  Our bylaws and actions have to comply with Illinois state law and United States law.  We maintain a mailing address in Chicago, Illinois but our headquarters is currently in Vancouver, Canada. We have roughly a dozen people that work in our Vancouver headquarters and 4-5 more that work remotely on various projects.  These aren’t employees of PASS.  They are employed by a management company that we hire to run the day to day operations of the organization.  I’ll have more on this arrangement in a future post. PASS is a non-profit corporation.  The term non-profit and not-for-profit are used interchangeably.  In a for-profit corporation (or LLC) there are owners that are entitled to the profits of a company.  In a non-profit there are no owners.  As a non-profit, all the money earned by the organization must be retained or spent.  There is no money that flows out to shareholders, owners or the board of directors.  Any money not spent in furtherance of our mission is retained as financial reserves. Many non-profits apply for tax exempt status.  Being tax exempt means that an organization doesn’t pay taxes on its profits.  There are a variety of laws governing who can be tax exempt in the United States.  There are many professional associations that are tax exempt however PASS isn’t tax exempt.  Because our mission revolves around the software of a single company we aren’t eligible for tax exempt status. PASS was founded in the late 1990’s by Microsoft and Platinum Technologies.  Platinum was later purchased by Computer Associates. As the founding partners Microsoft and CA each have two seats on the Board of Directors.  The other six directors and three officers are elected as specified in our bylaws. As a non-profit, our bylaws layout our governing practices.  They must conform to Illinois and United States law.  These bylaws specify that PASS is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership with two members each from Microsoft and CA.  You can find our bylaws as well as a proposed update to them on the governance page of the PASS web site. The last point that I’d like to make is that PASS is completely self-funded.  All of our $4 million in revenue comes from conference registrations, sponsorships and advertising.  We don’t receive any money from anyone outside those channels.  While we work closely with Microsoft we are independent of them and only derive a very small percentage of our revenue from them.

    Hey All, As always, I would like to thank all of your help and assistance in advance. I am looking for a way to automatically redirect a user to a site and maintain the redirect site as the referral site. Let me explain the process and what is needed in a step by step format. User clicks on a desired link in an email User is navigated to testdomain.com User is automatically redirected to test.com/landing test.com sees testdomain.com as the referral site Data is gathered via Google Analytics I am unsure as if this PHP code will take care of it, or not - header("Location: http://google.com", true, 303); I could test and that is most likely what I am going to do. But I would like to understand a little more as to WHY this would or WHY this wouldn't work.

    Welcome everyone to T-SQL Tuesday Episode 34!  When last we tuned in, Mike Fal (b|t) hosted Trick Shots.  These highlighted techniques or tricks that you figured out on your own which helped you understand SQL Server better. This month, I'm asking you to look back this past week, year, century, or hour...to a time when you COULDN'T figure it out.  When you were stuck on a SQL Server problem and you had to seek help. In the beginning... SQL Server has changed a lot since I started with it.  <Cranky Old Guy> Back in my day, Books Online was neither.  There were no blogs. Google was the third-place search site. There were perhaps two or three community forums where you could ask questions.  (Besides the Microsoft newsgroups...which you had to access with Usenet.  And endure the wrath of...Celko.)  Your "training" was reading a book, made from real dead trees, that you bought from your choice of brick-and-mortar bookstore. And except for your local user groups, there were no conferences, seminars, SQL Saturdays, or any online video hookups where you could interact with a person. You'd have to call Microsoft Support...on the phone...a LANDLINE phone.  And none of this "SQL Family" business!</Cranky Old Guy> Even now, with all these excellent resources available, it's still daunting for a beginner to seek help for SQL Server.  The product is roughly 1247.4523 times larger than it was 15 years ago, and it's simply impossible to know everything about it.*  So whether you are a beginner, or a seasoned pro of over a decade's experience, what do you do when you need help on SQL Server? That's so meta... In the spirit of offering help, here are some suggestions for your topic: Tell us about a person or SQL Server community who have been helpful to you.  It can be about a technical problem, or not, e.g. someone who volunteered for your local SQL Saturday.  Sing their praises!  Let the world know who they are! Do you have any tricks for using Books Online?  Do you use the locally installed product, or are you completely online with BOL/MSDN/Technet, and why? If you've been using SQL Server for over 10 years, how has your help-seeking changed? Are you using Twitter, StackOverflow, MSDN Forums, or another resource that didn't exist when you started? What made you switch? Do you spend more time helping others than seeking help? What motivates you to help, and how do you contribute? Structure your post along the lyrics to The Beatles song Help!     I’m trying to make TraceTune (and eventually ClearTrace) work the way I do.  My typical query tuning session goes like this: Run a trace and upload to TraceTune/ClearTrace Tune the slowest queries Goto 1 I might do this two or three times in one day and then not come back to it again for weeks or even months.  This is especially true for those clients that I only visit a few times per month.  In many cases I’ll look at a query, decide I can’t do much with it and move on.  I needed a way to capture that information. TraceTune now lets you enter a comment for a query.  It can be as simple or as complex as you like.  The comment will be shown inline with the execution history of that query. This should let you walk back through your history with a query and decide whether you should spend more time tuning it.

    The latest release of ClearTrace (Build 38) now shows the execution history of a particular statement. You’ll need to save the trace files to a trace group instead of just using the default.  That’s as easy as typing something into the trace group name when you upload the trace.  I usually put the server name in this field. Build 38 also re-enables support for statement level events.  If your trace includes RPC:StmtCompleted or SQL:StmtCompleted events those will be processed and save.  In the results tab you can choose to view statement level or batch level events.  Please note that saving statement level events in a trace can generate HUGE trace files very quickly.

  • SSMS Tools Pack 2.1.0 is out. Added support for SQL Server 2012 RC0.

    This version adds support for SQL Server 2012 RC0 and fixes a few bugs with SQL History. Because of the support for regions in SSMS 2012 the regions and debug sections feature has been removed from SSMS Tools Pack for SQL Server 2012. The feature is still available for previous SSMS versions. In other news SSMS Tools Pack has won the SQL Magazine bronze award for best free tool of 2011.   • VMPlayer 9, Xubuntu 12.10, Rails Development - Freezing frequently

    I have a new Vizio Ultrabook that came with Windows 7. I develop Rails applications, and it's a pain to do that in windows, so I setup a Xubuntu VM with 1GB ram and 2 CPU cores. I basically keep the VM open all the time and have enough memory not to worry. Sometimes I pause the VM. For the first few days, everything was fine. The fourth day, Xubuntu froze up while running a test (with Guard and RSpec). I didn't think much of it and restarted the VM and went on my way. The freezes started becoming more frequent, though. I don't think they are only when I run a test, but often they are. It'll happen quickly, too. Startup VM, save file, test runs, it freezes, all within 5 minutes. Of note: the VM is using a shared folder from Windows (where the code is). This may be the problem. Any other people experience something like this?

  • git in non-distributed, independent, lone programming ...best practice(s) ?

    I am currently studying the git documentation to get a hang of distributed version control workflow and use of git command line. I want to first start using git with small, personal, pet projects so to gain experience before doing it on large scale (i.e., bigger projects, team dev). What areas of the git system should I, as a lone player, devote most of my study time to... what parts should I leave for the larger scale work later on. In other words what features of the git system will fully be grasped in team work only, and therefore should not be too involved with at an individual level?

  • gcc sandboxing tool - AppArmor / CHROOT jail on Ubuntu 12.04

    We have a Node application as the front end to a C++ sandboxing tool, which compiles code using gcc and outputs the result to the browser. e.g. exec("gcc -o /tmp/test /tmp/test.cpp", function (error, stdout, stderr) { if(!stderr) { execFile('/tmp/test', function(error, stdout, stderr) {}); } }); This works fine. However, as you can imagine this is a security nightmare if it were to be made public - so I was thinking of two options to protect my stack: 1) A CHROOT jail - but this in itself wouldn't be enough to prevent directory traversal / file access. 2) AppArmor ? So my question is really, how could I protect my stack from any nasties that could come from: A) Compiling unknown code using gcc B) Executing the compiled code

  • Utility to Script SQL Server Configuration

    I wrote a small utility to script some key SQL Server configuration information. I had two goals for this utility: Assist with disaster recovery preparation Identify configuration changes I’ve released the application as open source through CodePlex. You can download it from CodePlex at the Script SQL Server Configuration project page. The application is a .NET 2.0 console application that uses SMO. It writes its output to a directory that you specify.  Disaster Planning ScriptSqlConfig generates scripts for logins, jobs and linked servers.  It writes the properties and configuration from the instance to text files. The scripts are designed so they can be run against a DR server in the case of a disaster. The properties and configuration will need to be manually compared. Each job is scripted to its own file. Each linked server is scripted to its own file. The linked servers don’t include the password if you use a SQL Server account to connect to the linked server. You’ll need to store those somewhere secure. All the logins are scripted to a single file. This file includes windows logins, SQL Server logins and any server role membership.  The SQL Server logins are scripted with the correct SID and hashed passwords. This means that when you create the login it will automatically match up to the users in the database and have the correct password. This is the only script that I programmatically generate rather than using SMO. The SQL Server configuration and properties are scripted to text files. These will need to be manually reviewed in the event of a disaster. Or you could DIFF them with the configuration on the new server. Configuration Changes These scripts and files are all designed to be checked into a version control system.  The scripts themselves don’t include any date specific information. In my environments I run this every night and check in the changes. I call the application once for each server and script each server to its own directory.  The process will delete any existing files before writing new ones. This solved the problem I had where the scripts for deleted jobs and linked servers would continue to show up.  To see any changes I just need to query the version control system to show many any changes to the files. Database Scripting Utilities that script database objects are plentiful.  CodePlex has at least a dozen of them including one I wrote years ago. The code is so easy to write it’s hard not to include that functionality. This functionality wasn’t high on my list because it’s included in a database backup.  Unless you specify the /nodb option, the utility will script out many user database objects. It will script one object per file. It will script tables, stored procedures, user-defined data types, views, triggers, table types and user-defined functions. I know there are more I need to add but haven’t gotten around it yet. If there’s something you need, please log an issue and get it added. Since it scripts one object per file these really aren’t appropriate to recreate an empty database. They are really good for checking into source control every night and then seeing what changed. I know everyone tells me all their database objects are in source control but a little extra insurance never hurts. Conclusion I hope this utility will help a few of you out there. My goal is to have it script all server objects that aren’t contained in user databases. This should help with configuration changes and especially disaster recovery.
