• Problem with thread after SCREEN_OFF in Android

  I’m doing an application that listens to the android.intent.action.SCREEN_OFF in a Service (if that matter) and then it is supposed to wait a few seconds and launch an action, I’ve tried a timer schedule method, thread and handler postDelay method but all of them seems to fail, they are never executed on a device, it seems like it’s being freezed/killed after phone is locked. It works on emulator and on device attached to USB, but never with device working on battery only, which actually is a main scenario. Do you know any solutions to this?

• BES Express - configure MDS to push messages from 3rd party web application

  Hi! I have developed IIS web service to send PAP messages using Blackberry Push API over MDS. And there is an application installed on device, configured to receive push messages on appropriate port. Everything works well on MDS simulator. But it's not working well in real environment: I have installed BES Express and register several devices. I can browse MDS url with appropriate port, so url is correct. Also port enabled for reliable pushes is used in push message and in device application. • Returning Meaningful Exceptions from a WCF Project

  I am pretty new to WCF in general. What little experience I have comes from using fairly simple .SVC services in ASP.NET web applications. I tried experimenting with using a WCF Project for the first time, and ran into a major show-stopper. As I’m sure most are aware, for some strange reason, in a web application in which the customErrors mode is set to On , services (both .ASMX and .SVC) will not return exception details to the client. Instead, the exception and stack trace are emptied, and the message always reads “There was an error processing the request”, which is not at all helpful. When services are directly hosted inside the web application itself, it’s easy to work around this restriction by placing the services in a dedicated folder, and setting for that folder. However, I’m running into this same issue with exceptions not being returned from services that live in a separate WCF project. Thing is, I don’t know how to work around that. In a nutshell: I need to get my WCF Project services to bubble REAL exceptions to the client – or at least, the original exception message, instead of “There was an error processing the request”.

• Problem with creation of scheduled task from IIS6 on SR2003

  Hi, I am writing a webapplication using .NET. The webapp creates scheduled tasks using the System.Diagnostics.Process class, calling SCHTASKS.EXE with parameters. I have changed the identity on the app pool, to a specific domain user. The domain-user is local administrator on all the four webservers. From webserver01 I am creating tasks on webserver01 to webserver04. It works perfect for 3-5 days, but then it breaks. It gives me the following errormessage in a messagebox: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application." If I have the system in the broken state, and I change the identity of the app pool to Domain administrator, it works. As I change it back to my domain-user, it breaks again. If I reboot the server, it works again for the same amount of days, but will break again. It seems like a permission-related problem. I just don't understand why it works sometimes, and sometimes doesn't. I hope someone outthere has seen this problem! Looking forward to hear from you! Kind regards, Morten, Denmark

• Error while Installing Android app on Android virtual device

  Hi. I have created a small and simple android app. I tried installing it on an actual android device. But because it won't install, I created an AVD resembling my phone. I tried copying and installing app on that AVD and it still says that error. "Application xxx could not be installed on this phone". Before I tried installing my app on the phone or AVD I following steps: 1. Exported an unsigned copy of application onto my hard-drive. 2. User jarsigner to sign the app 3. Verified with jarsigner that my app is signed properly. 4. Used zipalign to optimize the app resources. I do not have an icon assigned to myapp but mandatory properties like version etc. have been specified properly. I had initially developed app using 2.1 version but because of compatability issues with my phone I reverted code to compile on 1.5 and it still doesn't get installed either on AVD or my phone. My AVD is on 2.1 though and code is compiled with 1.5. Is there a place where I can see the logs as to why app is not getting installed. It would be really helpful. Cheers

• Getting Visual Studio macros in console app

  In a Visual Studio extension, you can get the default include paths for all projects with C# code like: String dirs = dte2.get_Properties("Projects", "VCDirectories"); where dte2 is the Visual Studio application object. Usually, those directories contain macros like $(INCLUDE). You can expand those macros by looking at dte2.Solution.Projects, finding the relevant project in that collection; from the project, look at project.Configurations, find the relevant configuration, and call its Evaluate method. In VS2005/VS2008, there's a .vssettings file that contains the VCDirectories. In VS2010, there's a property sheet with the same information. A console application can just parse those files -- great. But how can you expand the macros? As a first step, I tried instantiating a VCProjectEngine object in a console app, but that just resulted in a COM failure. So I don't know how to instantiate a VCProject object in order to follow the same strategy I used in a VS extension. Where are the macro bindings stored?

• Is there any framework for rich web clients on top of html/css?

  Some RAD tools like openobject use rich web clients. I.e. their client side code reside inside the browser and they talk to the server via xml-rpc or json-rpc only and change the view accordingly, all the javascript and css are transferred only once. Such rich web clients would increase the productivity in enterprise class web application that have lots of processes and forms etc. I would like to use such a rich web client inside my own application. I tried to search but found only openerp-web, which is tightly integrated to its server. Is there any other rich web client framework available? if not, is there any design detail I can look into to create my own? Thanks. Edit: Browser is a client which uses http and similar protocols to talks to web server which serve pages that the client displays. Rich web client is a client which sits on top of Browser which talks to the server, send data, receive data and information about How to update the view etc and do it. Similar to Vaadin, such rich web client will eliminate any code requirement on client side and and all the coding will be done on server side. Belows are such thin clients. pjax ( jquery ) vaadin ( java ) openobject web client ( python ) nagare ( python ) seaside ( smalltalk ) p4a ( php ) this are all such clients that once properly setup will allow to code on only on sever and still provide great ajax like experience.

• Looking for recommnedation on JavaScript libraries in the leage of ExtJS and Qooxdoo for serious web

  Hello. I'm looking for a JavaScript library for my web application. The application is very data intensive and has rich form controls (almost windows like). AJAX will be used liberally. The development platform is ASP.Net (mostly ASP.Net MVC will be used). I cannot pursue with ExtJs due to the price/license factor. I checked Qooxdoo but it is very windows-unfriendly. YIU fell short of my needs w.r.t. form controls it offers. Other libraries like jQuery do not offer rich form controls. So I am looking recommendations for a library that satisfies most of following needs: Rich UI controls Solid API for AJAX handling Employs good programming practices for scripting in frontend (preferably OO but not mandatory) Free. Else has only development cost and not production Windows friendly (or at least not unfriendly) Not monolithic. Should be independent (Not have development & production dependencies) Theme'ing should be easy (preferably wrapped by the library) I am not mentioning other basic needs (like browser compatibility). I hope any popular library will honor those.

First off, I'm on Delphi 7. a) Does Delphi 2010 bring anything new to the table to help with this situation? b) Should we pick an aftermarket component suite and rely on them to solve all these problems? c) Should we go with an aftermarket skinning engine? d) Perhaps a more html type gui is the way to go. Can we make a relatively complex gui app with html that doesn't require using a browser? (prefer to keep it form based) e) Should we just knuckle down and code through each one of these scenarios and quit bitching about it? f) And finally, how in the world are we supposed to test all these conditions? thanks, shawnH

  I have a web site running on IIS7 on a remote server. I would like to do the following: Create a new subfolder under the root virtual directory. Create a new app pool. Add this new app pool to the new subfolder Normally, I would do this manually in IIS by first creating the app pool, and then right-clicking the sub folder an choose "add application", but I need to do this programmatically in C#. I've managed to make the above points 1 and 2 work, but I can't find the way to adding the application to the sub folder. • Easy way to lock a file on a remote machine (windows)?

  I've tracked down an error in my logs, and am trying to reproduce it. My theory is that a file sometimes gets locked in a specific folder, and when the application (ASP.NET) tries to delete that folder it hangs. I don't have the application running on my own machine so I'm debugging this on a remote server. But for the life of me, I can't seem to figure out a way to lock a file that prevents it from being deleted by the process. My first thought was to map the network path to a local drive and just leave a command prompt open to that folder. Locally that always fouls up my folder deletes, but apparently SMB is a bit more robust and doesn't grant me a lock. After that I created an infinte loop vbscript in the folder and executed it remotely. The file was deleted out from underneath the executing code. Man! I then tried creating a file on the server in that folder and removing all permissions. That didn't do the trick. I don't have access to the IIS settings so perhaps it's running under a privileged system account. So: what's a program that you know is free and I can quickly use to create an exclusive lock on a file so I can test my delete theory? Like a really, really bad Notepad clone or something. :-)

• What is the best cross-platform language for desktop applications? (Java, Adobe Air, Flex, Silverlight??, Anything Else)

  My business partner needs a desktop application programmed, and it needs to be cross-platform as he wants Mac owners (OS X) to be able to run it as well. This, of course, is a bit of a problem for me as I program in PHP for my web projects and exclusively in C# (formerly used Visual Basic) for my desktop apps. I've been using (and love) NetBeans for my PHP stuff, and love Visual Studio just as much; they're both excellent IDEs. With this in mind, I'd like to find a language and IDE that's as similar to Visual Studio as possible (or at least something that makes development as easy as it does) for my cross-platform application development. In fact, if there is a language I can use with VS I'd be extremely happy. I realize that NetBeans has a Java Desktop App IDE, but have been having problems with it (my question in regards to that issue is here. I am also not sure that I really want to learn and use Java if there is a better, easier option out there. Obviously, the first language that came to mind that I can use cross-platform was Java, but I've also heard of people using Adobe Air, as well as Flex being used. I've never programmed in any of those languages, and as such have no frame of reference from which I can decide which would be best for me. I'm also not sure what other options there may be for me; perhaps there's another language I can use that'd be better than the three options I've already provided. (Can you make desktop apps with Silverlight? If so, did MS make an interpreter that will get them to work on OS X?) I like the syntax of C# quite a bit, and the Visual Studio IDE makes it extremely easy to make my apps with. As such, I'd like to find something that'll work as well for me with the cross-platform shatner as C# and its IDE does with my Windows apps. Thanks in advance for your help/opinions!

• What technologies/tools do people use to implement live websites ?

  Hi, I have the following situation: -I have a server A hooked up to a piece of hardware that sends values and information out of every second. Programs on the server machine can read these values. This server A is in a very remote location so Internet connection is very slow and not reliable but the connection does exist. Let's say it's a weather station in the Arctic. -Users from the home location want to monitorize the weather values somehow. Well, the users can use a remote desktop connection the server A but that would be too too slow. My idea is somehow to have a website on a web server (let's call the webserver - B and B is in a home location ) and make the server A connect to the server B and somehow send values and the web application reads the values and displays them....... but how to do such a system ?? I know I can use MySQL and have the server A connect to a SQL server on server B and send INSERT queries and have the web application running on server B constantly read from the SQL server but I think that would be way way too slow and I think there has to be a better solution. Any ideas ? BTW. The users should be able to send information to the weather station from the website as well ( so an ADMIN user should be allowed to shut down the weather station from the website or whatever) Best regards, MadSeb

• Weird behavior with windows startup C#

  Hi, I've created an application with the option to start on Windows startup. I did not manage to find out what was wrong, so I tried it differently: create a shortcut in the Startup folder. Couldn't go wrong I figured, I mean, it's just a shortcut right? • Publishing content to multiple (unknown) domains using Open Graph?

  I'm working on an application that publishes content ('articles') on a variety of URLs, which are all controlled by the same WordPress installation (mapped domains, all powered by the same set of code/part of a network). All of the publishing is done through one central Facebook App. I have no idea what the domains for these URLS are going to be, since they are controlled by our users who register domains and then configure them within their account on our service. When I attempt to use Open Graph to publish content on one of these sites (that has a customized domain), they are rejected with the following error (error code 1611028): Object at URL * * * * of type 'article' is invalid because the domain '* * * ' is not allowed for the specified application id ' * * *'. You can verify your configured 'App Domain' at.... Since I can't enter all of the domains into Facebook, and since they are not derived from my App URL anyway, is there any way that I can have this work? Some sort of magic OG tag I can put in the pages or something? Or is it just not possible to do what I'm trying to do?

• A good php framework in 2012

  I've done a lot of googling around this, and practically all of the answers I find are pre 2011, and are answered in the usual, here are the 5 most popular frameworks... So I'd like to update this topic for 2012, I'm going to build a web application with a pretty complex back-end system driving it, and I'd like to use a framework so I don't have to reinvent the wheel. My application will be hugely user based, so I would appreciate a built in authentication/validation system. (When this is missing it takes me a good 2 weeks of intense and frivolous research to try to pick the "best" one (I don't want to roll my own, I don't think I'd do a better job than what's out there). I've looked into a tried a few, so I'll give you what I like and don't like, but I don't want to bias answers too much. I don't like: Frameworks that auto-generate bloated code. If they have the feature, fine, but if I have to use it, I get frustrated. Backwards compatibility with php4, eww. I don't need backwards compatibility at all. I like: Getting up and running quickly (but without all the auto-generation bogus), what I mean by this is that all the essentials are there, so I don't have to come to a grinding halt to research what the best 3rd party plugin is to get the feature I need. Thorough documentation, good tutorials. Good presentation of these materials. Please explain why your framework suggestion is good, don't just give the name of a framework without any justification. • Windows service - COM class factory error 80070583

  I have a Windows service that periodically scrapes some web pages, using mshtml and HtmlAgilityPack. For this particular C# code snippet: HTMLDocumentClass doc = new HTMLDocumentClass(); doc.write(new object[] { responseFromServer }); doc.close(); I get this error: Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {25336920-03F9-11CF-8FD0-00AA00686F13} failed due to the following error: 80070583. I tracked down the CLSID in the registry, and it turned out to be mshtml.dll. I also noticed that the version I actually have is version 7.0.6000.17023, and the registry version is listed as Version=7.0.3300.0. The error code 80070583 means "Class does not exist"; interestingly, I've also gotten an error from the same program with error code 80070582, or "Class already exists". What does it all mean? Edit: Since there are no answers, I ended up working around the problem, by ditching MSHTML and using HTML Agility Pack to parse HTML. How do I close this question?

• Windows 7 64 / Visual Studio 2008 / OpenCV2.1 error: "The application was unable to start correctly

  Hey all, I'm building OpenCV2.1 from top of branch in 64 bit mode, when I link the libraries against my code (that works in 32 bit mode on XP), I get the dialog: "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0150002) Click OK to close the application" When I start the application. The event viewer is pointing at one of the OpenCV dll's & says it's a Side-by-Side error, but I'm definitely building OpenCV & my code as a 64 bit compile, and there are no errors during that process. I've tried fiddling with the /MTd options & it doesn't help. Some (almost) related questions have suggested installing the VS2008 redistributable package, but I'm building using vs2008 pro, that seems like madness? Is it still necessary to install the package in my case? Any help, including the cause of these side-by-side errors, would be appreciated. James

I have tried almost all methods specified on stackoverflow on google but I still cant find out where I am going wrong....I cannot upload a file greater than 64 kb!.. I have the following operation contract: public double DivideByZero(int x, int y) { if (y == 0) { throw new FaultException<ArgumentException> (new ArgumentException("Just some dummy exception") ,new FaultReason("some very bogus reason"), new FaultCode("007")); } return x / y; } And following is taken from the client:- Console.WriteLine("Enter the x value"); string x = Console.ReadLine(); Console.WriteLine("Enter the Y value"); string y = Console.ReadLine(); try { double val = client.DivideByZero(Convert.ToInt32(x), Convert.ToInt32(y)); Console.WriteLine("The result is " + val.ToString()); } catch(FaultException<ArgumentException> exp) { Console.WriteLine("An ArgumentException was thrown by the service "+ exp.ToString()); } catch (Exception exp) { Console.WriteLine(exp.ToString()); } In the above case catch(FaultException exp) (the first catch block with ArgumentException in the client code) block does not get executed. However, when I remove ArgumentException to have catch(FaultException exp), the same catch block gets executed. I am not sure about this as I am throwing FaultException from my operation contract. Am I missing anything here. Appreciate your help, Ashish
