  • Capslock turns on intermittenly on Windows Login Screen

    At first I thought it was a coworker playing a joke on me.. I have a habit of locking my workstation whenever I leave my desk. however i have noticed over the last several years that sometimes the capslock key would be on when I return. I don't notice this until i try typing in my password (which would fail because its in ALL CAPS) and then glance at the now illuminated caps lock key. This has happened on and off across half a dozen workstations on 2000, XP, Vista, and Windows 7. Possible causes I'm losing my mind "feature" in windows? some sort of institutional domain policy at my workplace someone has been messing with me for many many years ?

  • Problem with the hosts file in Windows XP

    I have a computer with Windows XP SP2 with a weird problem. The hosts file doesn't work. No matter what I do, adding or removing entries in the file doesn't make any difference, pinging the added names times out. I tried flushing the DNS cache (using ipconfig /flushdns) but that didn't work, I even tried to restart the DNS client service but that made no difference too. Removing entries also has no effect, I ping the names and I get a reply. Help!!! Edit: Thanks for your answer guys, but the problem is more complicated than this. It seems I'll have to reinstall Windows.

    Hi, I need to run a PHP app on a windows apache server. I've installed Apache, unzipped the app into the htdocs folder, but when I type this URL into the browser http://localhost:8080/pixelpost/admin/install.php I get the content of the PHP file, rather than the output it should generate. What are the steps for enabling PHP support in Apache on windows? I guess I need to install mod_php, and possibly do some other stuff, but my Apache and PHP knowledge is minimal, so idiot-proof instructions would be much appreciated. Thanks, Don

  • Windows 7 - Move location of Eventlog

    I am having a particular nasty problem of my main system drive 'disappearing' all of the sudden while the system is running. The vendor somewhat knows about this but has not managed to fix it completely over multiple fw iterations. Problems I have with the support is that I cannot provide any particular system log files/entries to further analyse what might have been going on because, well - windows cannot write to its 'lost' drive before bsod'ing. Is there any way to configure where Windows 7 stores its event logs so that I could specify a second physical hdd?

  • Windows shuts down unexpectedly when waking up from sleep

    I've been facing this issue since yesterday, whenever I put the computer into sleep mode and when I wake up, it takes me to boot menu with choices; start Windows normally, safe mode, etc. in short, it shuts down unexpectedly while waking up. I have my laptop dual booted with up-to-date Windows 7 SP1 (32-bit) and Ubuntu 10.10. This problem is not happening with Ubuntu. I googled the issue and went through this, this and this page. But, none of the threads were helpful to solve it. I've found that there's something to do with device drivers. What can be done to resolve the issue? Can SFC utility solve it if it is due to corrupt system files?

  • After installing Windows Phone 8 SDK, Connectify doesn't work

    Today I installed Windows Phone 8 SDK from the official site. After installing and a couple of restarts (it restarted the PC to enable Hyper-V), I opened Connectify. I use Connectify Hotspot to connect my iPod to the internet as I have an ethernet connection and no wireless router. The problem is that now, Connectify doesn't show WiFi in Share Over. The attached screenshot shows this. Previously, before I installed the SDK, it would show Ethernet and Wi-Fi. I would select WiFi and share my internet. Now, this is completely screwed. EDIT: I found out that the Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi Miniport Driver has got disabled and I am not able to enable it again. Please advise. Please advise on what to do Hardware: Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, Apple MacBook Pro 9,1 15 inch Mid-2012 (non retina)

    I have a Fujitsu scanner that I cannot get working on Windows 7 x64. I have downloaded both the TWAIN and ISIS x64 drivers from the fujitsu website but Windows still does not recognize. I have tried it out using GIMP and Paint.net, neither program sees the scanner. I have also tried the fi-5000N Configuration Tool from Fujitsu but to no avail. Anyone know what drivers i need to install? Here's the info on the back of the scanner: Model: Fi-5110E0X2 Part No: PA03360-B015 Serial No: 026132 Date: 2005-09

    i download one zip folder and extract it in windows 7. after extracting it shows file names with green color. now when i try to open any file, it give error access denied. even i set the permission on that file for full control, same error is coming. if i extract same folder in windows vista or xp no error. actually attribute of file is AE and when i right click on file and then select properties-- general-- advance -- encrypt contents to secure data is selected. if uncheck this option i can't apply it again gives error permission denied.     My dad's currently using windows movie maker to try to make a video out of a series of JPEG images and some MP3s. He's not very happy with it, since Windows movie maker seems to downsample the source images he's used, and not very efficently - despite them being the same resolution as the output WMM is supposed to make, and the replaygain based audio level normalisation on the tracks don't work. So, i'd want a free programme that has storyboard mode (else i'd use visualdub) that'll not try to change the resolution of images used to make a video (assuming all images are the same resolution), and preferably accept the normalised mp3 files we're using. WMM isn't a option, since Its what i'm trying to find a replacement for.

  • Windows 7 does not recognize hdmi audio output

    I recently upgraded to Windows 7 on a Dell 545 MT with audio/video output via nVidia 9800 GTX+ to a flat screen television. I have installed/uninstalled/reinstalled all the most recent drivers from nVidia & realtek, but the machine will not recognize the hdmi output as a sound device (as it did previously in Vista). I troubleshot the problem with Dell for over an hour and was then directed to their software specialists who want $130 to fix the issue! Can anyone offer some insights on this? I've searched nVidia and Windows 7 forums w/o success and would really like to get sound coming back through my tv speakers. Many Thanks.

    Is there a tool or a trick to easily duplicate a windows profile? My problem is that I have a local user profile and I like to copy that for another user. Additionaly that profile was created locally when a domain-user logged in, and I like to create a copy of that profile for a non-domain-user. Hope it's clear what my problem is. I've just seen there is a similar question: Copy Windows 7 profile from one domain user to another Now I like to know if it is possible to simply change the user-profile's Name and Password.   • Windows 7 installation asks for DVD drivers

    I have installed Windows XP on my machine (Company CQ5020NL). Before I was able to do that, I set the SATA controller to IDE in the bios. Now I want to install Windows 7 upgrade. The DVD boots into the installation setup, but when I click "Install now" and am asked to load "A required CD/DVD drive device". When I click "Browse" I can browse the installation dvd and the drive I want to install to. I have tried all the SATA options in the bios already. I have no idea what to do... can anybody help me out?

    All, I have a single Windows 2008 server running in Amazon's EC2 cloud. It's running a web application that is running fine and is accessible to the outside world. I need 3-5 developers to be able to work on database on the server, and was intending to accomplish this by setting up SSTP/RRAS on the server and letting them VPN in. This has been a bit of an ordeal due to the amount of server roles and messing with certificates that has been needed, but my VPN connection works now (all clients will be Windows 7). My problem is that when I drop my VPN connection (from the client side) the server hangs. The only way that I've found to get it back is to reboot it from the Amazon management console.     I've got access to a network via CheckPoint VPN (Windows client). Problem is, I have a linux box that needs to talk to its web services and the target web servers are inside the VPN. So far, we have been unable to connect linux to the VPN (and I'm not trying to solve that problem at the moment). I'm wondering if (temporarily) I can setup a proxy server on a Windows (XP) box to shuttle HTTP requests back and forth? If so, what'd be a good application to do this? (hopefully free/open-source) TIA

    I have a one desktop running windows 7 ultimate connected to Ethernet cable. And I want to share folder to another wifi connected laptop (also windows 7 ultimate). Both machines are on the same home internet connection. I have tried to share folders by going to properties sharing advanced sharing permissions checked all the boxes to allow all but I don’t see any shared files on my laptop. I know it’s possible to share folders between two Wi-Fi connected machines but how can it be done when one pc is cable connected and other is Wi-Fi connected on the same internet connection.

    My laptop has an OEM version of Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I need to reinstall Windows, and I've made sure that disk I have downloaded is the same as the one on my system (32-bit Home Premium). Is the retail version the same as the OEM? I only have a retail copy but I have an OEM license. Will I have any problems reactivating my copy of windows? Note, my HW hasn't changed. Note: I saw this post already, but I don't have an OEM disk: Installing XP with out manufacturers original XP restore disk, possiable with OEM disk?

  • Reduce Windows DNS Service caching on Window

    I'm struggling with DNS caching issues on a Windows based LAN. I've noticed that if I change a DNS record on a domain hosted by a 3rd party nameserver, that I always seem to be the very last person to see the change happen. I can often query the domain using a service which checks propagation around the world like www.whatsmydns.net but I usually find that all other DNS servers are correct and it's only my own server which has the old IP - even 8-12 hours later. This is an issue for us as we're website developers and often making changes to DNS records so these huge delays are frustrating. It seems to be because our primary domain controller server (+Active Directory & DNS) on our LAN (which is also our local DNS server) caches records for AGES (Way beyond it's published TTL). How can I stop the Windows DNS server from caching, or reduce the caching to only an hour or so?
