• Do you contribute to open-source software?

  Recently John Resig (creator of the jQuery library) wrote on his twitter that "When it comes to hiring, I'll take a Github commit log over a resume any day.". As much as I respect that (motivating developers to give back to the community), it also puzzles me, as not all of us have the opportunity to do so, for a number of reasons (family, employer agreements, etc). How would you make a case for the non-contributor developer? Do you think that developers that do not contribute to open-source software are doomed from certain kinds of organizations?

• State of Texas delivers Private Cloud Services powered by Oracle Technology

• MEF to the rescue in Task-it

  One of the frameworks that I chose to leverage in the development of my Silverlight 4 Task-It application is MEF, the Managed Extensibility Framework. Actually, that decision came while I was at a Silverlight Deep Dive session on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA, and came at the recommendation of John Papa (Microsoft Silverlight Evangelist) and Glenn Block (the MEF Maniac). If you are not familiar with MEF, its primary function is to provide a framework for extensibility in Silverlight applications, however, what I found is that MEF's capabilities go beyond just this. As a matter of fact, Microsoft announced at MIX this week that its new Silverlight Analytics Framework would use MEF for composition. • Humor in Documentation

  Is a small amount of lighthearted wording or humor acceptable in source code documentation? For example, I have an algorithm that has a message hop around a graph (network) until its path forms a cycle. When this happens it is removed from the queue of the node it last resided on which removes it from memory. I write that in a comment, and finish the comment with "Rest in peace, little guy". That serves very little documenting purpose, but it cheers me up a bit, and I imagine it might cheer up other people I'm working with as they read through the code. Is this an acceptable practice, or should my in-code documentation resemble as much as possible the speeches of 2004 presidential candidate John Kerry? ;-)

  If google search query results are incorrect: How can it be reported? What is the procedure to correct it? @Lèse majesté: Incorrect results are the results that do not contain any of the searched keywords in them like in this my question @John Conde, yes I believe it is the right defitition. @DisgruntedGoat, even when there are a lot of results by keycaptcha for "Past 24 hours", the Google.com presents results only on reCAPTCHA. Anyway, they are different from those by google if to search by "keycaptcha" (in quotes) and by other search engines. Everybody thinks that searches by one keyword should be sneakily substituted by google's own promoted brand products?

  I’m pleased to announce that a new XAML-Based User Group has started in Birmingham, Alabama. The group is being hosted by Michael Crump and Jonathan Marbutt. The reason is very simple: we feel that Birmingham needs a fresh start. We are both very passionate about .NET and are hoping to share our experiences with the community. This includes Silverlight, WPF, Windows Phone 7, Surface, Lightswitch and Silverlight with SharePoint 2010. • Podcast with AJI about iOS development coming from a .NET background

  I talked with Jeff and John from AJI Software the other day about developing for the iOS platform. We chatted about learning Xcode and Objective-C, provisioning devices and the app publishing process. We all have a .NET background and made lots of comparisons between the two platforms/ecosystems/fanbois. They even let me throw in a plug for Christian Radio Locator. Jeff was my first contact with the Kansas City .NET community. It was probably about 10 years ago. He pushed me to talk more (and rescued me from my first talk that bombed) and blog more. One time a group of us took a 16 hour car trip to South Carolina for a code camp and live podcasted the whole thing. • Force users to access SSL site using specific host header

  Hi, So i am running IIS7 with one SSL site on it. I have a few different domains and subdomains that all point to my external IP. When using http they all direct to their respective sites using host headers. Whenever someone uses https on any of the domains they all point to my SSL site. I only want people who type in https://sub.domain.com (for example) to end up at my secure site and for anything else to just not go there, it can throw an error or direct to the http version, it doesn't matter. Is there a way of getting IIS7 to check the host header and throw an error if it doesn't match my specific subdomain? Thanks, Michael

• Outlook - Sychronise contacts from exchange

  At work the exchange server has details of all employees in the system. Then there is the Contacts folder in Outlook. I can populate this with all staff, but, I want to synchronise it against all staff (occasionally) removing people who in are in my local contacts, but not in the Exchange server (leavers) and importing changes/updates/new staff from the exchange server. However, I also have some personal contacts (family members etc) locally that I want to exclude from that. This is to enable synching to my smartphone better. Any suggestions? Regards, Michael

• Happy Tau Day! (Or: How Some Mathematicians Think We Should Retire Pi) [Video]

  When you were in school you learned all about Pi and its relationship to circles and turn-based geometry. Some mathematicians are rallying for a new lesson, on about Tau. Michael Hartl is a mathematician on a mission, a mission to get people away from using Pi and to start using Tau. His manifesto opens: Welcome to The Tau Manifesto. This manifesto is dedicated to one of the most important numbers in mathematics, perhaps the most important: the circle constant relating the circumference of a circle to its linear dimension. For millennia, the circle has been considered the most perfect of shapes, and the circle constant captures the geometry of the circle in a single number. Of course, the traditional choice of circle constant is p—but, as mathematician Bob Palais notes in his delightful article “p Is Wrong!”,1 p is wrong. It’s time to set things right. Why is Pi wrong? Among the arguments is that Tau is the ration of a circumference to the radius of a circle and defining circles by their radius is more natural and that Pi is a 2-factor number but with Tau everything is based of a single unit–three quarters of a turn around a Tau-defined circle is simply three quarters of a Tau radian. • 12.04 WiFi issue on a particular access point

  I have a WiFi access point that I connect to a PC to share its Internet connection with multiple machines, in a training environment. All the machines with 11.04 connect to this access point with no problem, and can access any server on the Internet. These machines have an Intel Wireless -N 1030 BGN chipset (as reported by lspci). Now, my problem is that I don't manage to connect 12.04 machines to this wireless network. The systems I tried do manage to connect (confirmed by Network Manager), but when I try to access a website like http://kernel.org, the browser shows "Connecting to kernel.org...", but displays a "The connection has timed out" error page. Other symptoms: Name resolution works (for example 'nslookup kernel.org') finds kernel.org's IP address 'ping kernel.org' doesn't work The same 12.04 machines have no problem at all with other wireless networks. So there is probably something weird in my access point (though the 11.04 machines are not impacted). Would you have any suggestions for investigating this issue? Thanks, Michael.

• In the Aggregate: How Will We Maintain Legacy Systems? [closed]

  NEW YORK - With a blast that made skyscrapers tremble, an 83-year-old steam pipe sent a powerful message that the miles of tubes, wires and iron beneath New York and other U.S. cities are getting older and could become dangerously unstable. July 2007 Story About a Burst Steam Pipe in Manhattan We've heard about software rot and technical debt. And we've heard from the likes of: "Uncle Bob" Martin - Who warned us about "the consequences of making a mess". Michael C. Feathers - Who gave us guidance for 'Working Effectively With Legacy Code'. So certainly the software engineering community is aware of these issues. But I feel like our aggregate society does not appreciate how these issues can plague working systems and applications. As Steve McConnell notes: ...Unlike financial debt, technical debt is much less visible, and so people have an easier time ignoring it. If this is true, and I believe that it is, then I fear that governments and businesses may defer regular maintenance and fortification against hackers until it is too late. [Much like NYC and the steam pipes.] My Question: Is there a way that we can avoid the software equivalent of NYC and the steam pipes?

  Thats right, the beta of the eBay Simple Lister app is now available in the eBay garden. I am really excited about this application! This Silverlight 4 application was built using Sketchflow, Blend, and Visual Studio 2010. It was designed and developed by Cynergy Systems for eBay with help from several Microsoft folk including Raj Ramabadran, Will Tschumy, Joe Shirey, and John Papa. • Oracle is Child&rsquo;s Play&hellip;in NSW

  A few weeks ago, my colleague Michael Seback posted a blog entry on Oracle’s acquisition of Haley.  We recently read  an interesting report from Down Under, and here was our press release on the  implementation of Oracle’s Policy automation software in New South Wales, which I thought I would share. We always love hearing about our software “at work”, and especially in the Public Sector- social services area, where it makes a big difference to people’s lives. Here were some of the reasons, why NSW chose Oracle software: “One of the things Oracle’s Policy Automation system is good at is allowing you take decision  trees and rules that are obviously written in English and code them up using very much a natural language approach,” said Holling (CIO for Human Services). “So it was quite a short process to translate the final set of rules that were written on paper into business rules that were actually embedded in the system.” “Another reason why we chose Oracle’s Automation tool is because with future versions of Siebel it comes very tightly integrated with that. It allows us to then to basically take the results of the Policy Automation survey and actually populate our client management system database with that information,” said Holling. As per Surend Dayal, North America VP, Oracle’s Policy automation has applications across a wide range of industries, including public sector—especially health and human services—also financial services, insurance, and even airline rewards programs. In other words, any business process that requires consistent, accurate decision-making where complex legislation and/or internal policies are involved.
