• Mac OS X, MySQL Preference Pane doesn't work

  I downloaded and installed MySQL 5.1.47 for OS X 10.6 using the DMG archive: mysql-5.1.47-osx10.6-x86_64.dmg I also installed MySQL.prefPane and MySQLStartupItem.pkg. MySQL.prefPane is a Preference Pane. The problem is, whenever I attempt to start/stop MySQL from the Preference Pane, System Preferences just hangs. It runs at about 50% CPU forever, eventually I have for force quit System Preferences. The same thing happens if I toggle "Automatically Start MySQL Server on Startup". Basically the MySQL Preference Pane is not functional. Note that I have no problem starting MySQL from the command line: sudo /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe I have tried reinstalling MySQL and the Preference Pane. I'm using the standard installation location, nothing out of the ordinary. Every time the MySQL Preference Pane just hangs. I'm doing this on a Macbook Pro (Intel) running OS X 10.6.3. There are no old versions of MySQL on this machine.

• What really happens when I use varchar(10) in the sqlite command-line shell?

  I'm messing around with SQLite for the first time by working through some of the SQLite documentation. In particular, I'm using Command Line Shell For SQLite and the SoupToNuts SQLite Tutorial on Sourceforge. According to the SQLite datatype documentation, there are only 5 datatypes in SQLite. However, in the two tutorial documents above, I see where the authors use commands such as create table tbl1(one varchar(10), two smallint); or create table t1 (t1key INTEGER PRIMARY KEY,data TEXT,num double,timeEnter DATE); which contain datatypes that aren't listed by SQLite, yet these commands work just fine. Additionally, when I ran .dump to see the SQL statements, these datatype specifications are preserved. So, what gives? Does SQLite keep a reference for any datatype specified in the SQL yet converts it behind the scenes to one of its 5 datatypes? Or is there something else I'm missing?

• OpenSSL not listed under PHP modules but shows up in the configure command

  PHP 5.2.12 OS X 10.5.8 If I compile PHP from source with the following configure command ./configure --disable-all --with-openssl=shared,/opt/local it succeeds. However, after a make and make install, php -m does not list the openssl module. Based on what I've read, I think it may be due to multiple installs of the openssl library. Installing the latest version of openssl from source and trying to specify the path in the configure command, --with-openssl=/usr/local, always results in the following error: Undefined symbols: "_EVP_CIPHER_CTX_block_size", referenced from: _zif_openssl_seal in openssl.o ld: symbol(s) not found collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [sapi/cgi/php-cgi] Error 1 I've tried a few different variations on the path with no luck. Based on http://blog.yimingliu.com/2009/02/24/missing-library-symbols-while-compiling-php-528/, I've also tried editing the Makefile so that MH_BUNDLE_FLAGS comes later in the compilation line. After spending a good portion of the day on this issue, I'm at a loss. Any suggestions?

• Problem serving video to iPad from Mongrel 1.1.5 , RoR 2.0.2 on Mac OS 10.6.3 Server

  I am working off the Final Cut Server Integration sample provided by Apple that is a Rails app using 2.0.2 and runs on Mongrel 1.1.5. I can have a basic non-Ruby directory on my boot volume (Mac OS 10.6.3 Server) and can serve up video files just fine to iPad. However, when I drag the same video file into the 'public' area of the app running on -p 3000 it will not play on iPad, but will in Safari 4.0.5 desktop version. Images work fine so I know it's not a permissions issue. I'm getting the crossed-out play icon on iPad so it is not an issue of waiting on a large file to download before playing. I suspect it is a Mongrel/Snow Leopard issue but why would Safari on desktop work fine and not Safari iPad?   itunes asked me to upgrade my iphone's OS to 3.1.3, so I complied naively. then xcode told me that the latest iphone OS version it could support was 3.1.2. So I went to download a new version from https://developer.apple.com/iphone/index.action#downloads, xcode 3.2.2 with iphone SDK. but when i went to install that, i was told I needed snow leopard 10.6.2 or later. so I'm just making sure that I am not misinterpreting anything when I say that, given that it is impossible to downgrade iphone OS versions without jailbreaking, I need to install a new version of the OS just so I can resume testing apps on my iphone?

• Have I fixed my partition problem with os x 10.5.8? Are my GPT and MBR back to normal?

  I'm new to linux and I have overstepped by abilities. I tried dual booting os x 10.5.8 with ubuntu 11.10 with rEFIt, but I been having problems with partitioning. Instead of enduring more headaches, I've made the decision to simply use ubuntu on VirtualBox. I've tried to return my HDD to normal, but I am looking for confirmation that my partitions are ok. • OSX: How to get a volume name (or bsd name) from a IOUSBDeviceInterface or location id

  Hi, I'm trying to write an app that associates a particular USB string descriptor (of a USB mass storage device) with its volume or bsd name. So the code goes through all the connected USB devices, gets the string descriptors and extracts information from one of them. I would like to get the volume name of those USB devices. I can't find the right API to do that. • Replacing xcode with macports software

  I have been trying to replace everything in xcode with stuff I can get from macports. So far, I installed xcode, then macports, then used macports to install gcc, gcc_select, gmake, elf-bintools, bintools, arm-bintools (just to be sure I replaced all the bintools), and then uninstalled all of xcode. I then linked /usr/bin/make with /opt/local/bin/gmake and used gcc_select to select gcc44--the one from macports. I also exported all the bintool executable paths into the .profile path. I was sure this would work (although I should have known better after working on it for 48 hours straight), but nothing will configure, and the log files all have the common error: :info:configure configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables I have a feeling it has something to do with libraries, but I am really not sure. I use a mac 10.5.8. If this is truely 'impossible', what parts of xcode to I need for macports to work? For example, I can uninstall the xcode folder without a problem.

  Hi I've been stuck on this problem for a while and would appreciate your help. I'm writing an API to allow an external source like a Browser Query String or a smartphone to enter some model User info in a form and hit the User create action to write the data to the db. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong with the code below. I've also observed that if I have code like @user = User.new(params[:user]), that this approach only works when a user enters their data within the form. And that if I have code such as @user = User.new( name: params[:name], location: params[:location], password = params[:password], email: params[:email]), that this code ONLY works for a Query string entry, but NOT both Query string AND regular form submission. Why is that and how can I write the code above in the Users Controller Create action, so that it takes care of both situations?   I am trying to read data from a bluetooth barcode scanner (KDC300) using C. Here is the code I have so far, and the program successfully establishes a bluetooth connection to the scanner, but when a barcode is scanned, no input is displayed on the screen (Eventually more will be done with the data, but we have to get it working first, right). PRoblem is that CoreData Framework on Mac OS X does not have NSFetchedResultsController.h nor NSFetchedResultsControllerDelagete protocol declared. At least I am not able to force COCOA application to see this class even if I drag Core Framework from iPhone project to link with Mac Application? Anyone faced this problem?

• What is the autoload class names structure, for the root "library" dir in a Zend Framework 1.10.2 pr

  I have a project I created with Zend Framework 1.10.2. I usually use the application/models directory for new model files I create, and the auto loading is fine, so for example - My_Model_SampleClass is located application/models/SampleClass.php. However, I have just created a custom Exception class, and it does not fit in the models directory inside the application dir (at least the way I see it, I could be logically wrong), so I've created it in the root "library" dir, but I can't seem to find the correct class name + file name to use, so auto loading will be done correctly. BTW, I use a namespace for all custom classes I use, let's assume it's "My".

  I'd like to control iTunes through Objective-C ( I just can't get Python appscript installed correctly on my OS/X 10.6.3 system ... that would have been my first choice ). From what I gather, the IPC on Cocoa is based on Apple Events : is there either: Online documentation on iTunes / Apple Events API ? Instrospection mechanism to get to iTunes API? I know about Applescript Editor / Open Dictionary functionality but I can't figure out how to translate the information I see into IPC calls. Note: I have already tried working out a solution through PyObjC but the main function I am after is track searching which I can't figure out. Disclaimer: OS/X super-newbie here.

• Connecting a LAN to an OpenVPN server via a windows 7 client gateway

  I've got OpenVPN set up between my windows 7 client and linux server. The goal is that I'll get secure access to a webapp running on the server from any computer on the client LAN. I'm using ccd to assign static ip addresses to each client connection, with key authentication. It's working on my client machine (10.83.41.9), and when you go to the gateway IP address (10.83.41.1), it loads up the webapp. Now I really need the other computers on the client LAN to be able to connect to the webapp as well, via the windows machine. The client has a static IP address of 192.168.2.100 on the LAN, and I've enabled IP forwarding in windows (confirmed by ipconfig /all). In my router I've forwarded 10.83.41.1 / 255.255.255.255 to 192.168.2.100. In the how-to, it mentions "Make sure your network interface is in promiscuous mode." as well. I can't find in the windows network config, so this may or may not be part of it. Ideally this would be achieved without any special configuration the other LAN computers. Not sure how far I'm going to get on my own at this point, any ideas? Is there something I'm missing, or anything I should need to know?

  I am trying to build a template geographic database for PostGIS (1.5) on Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) for my GeoDjango application. I am following: http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/contrib/gis/install/#creating-a-spatial-database-template-for-postgis I've managed to come up to the point where the provided postgis.sql should be run (i.e. psql -d template_postgis -f $POSTGIS_SQL_PATH/postgis.sql) At that point I am getting an error at the first SQL statement that is tried to be run.   There are a plethora of questions about virtual box port forwarding problems but none with my specific details. I have a Windows install living in Virtual Box, hosted within OSX. I've got several webservers running on localhost on different ports within the Windows install. I cannot for the life of me get port forwarding to work so I can access those webservers from OSX.   Hello there, /Volumes/sites is a connection to a samba share that hosts some of our sites. We authorise using a username & password that is the same user/pass to log onto the mac. When committing, (or even doing a cleanup) from the Mac Client side using the svn command line tool or SCPlugin, this error occurs: Commit succeeded, but other errors follow: Error bumping revisions post-commit (details follow): In directory '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html' Error processing command 'committed' in '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html' Error replacing text-base of 'index.php' Can't move '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html/.svn/tmp/text-base/index.php.svn-base' to '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html/.svn/text-base/index.php.svn-base': Operation not permitted Any ideas? I think it's to do with permissions on the mac side not being able to move files around on the samba share. Apologies if my question is kinda vague so any extra information I can give please shout. • using araxis merge for folder comparison on git branches (OSX)

  I know how to setup araxis merge to be my git diff / merge tool, so if I do git difftool it automatically launches araxis merge. However if I do git difftool upstream/master (to see all the differences between current branch and upstream/master), it launches the app one by one for every single file that is different. Is there a way of setting it up so I can get a folder comparison type view, and then go down and view each file diff as I choose? i.e. similar to this http://www.araxis.com/merge_mac/overview2.html The only way I've found to do this is to clone my repo into a new folder, switch to the branch there, and then do a normal araxis merge folder comparison.
