• How to install wexpect?

  Hello, I'm running 32-bit Windows XP and trying to have Matlab communicate with Cgate, a command line program. I'd like to make this happen using wexpect, which is a port of Python's module pexpect to Windows. I'm having trouble installing or importing wexpect though. I've put wexpect in the folder Lib, along with all other modules. I can import those other modules but just not wexpect. Commands I've tried include: import wexpect import wexpect.py python wexpect.py install python wexpect.py install --home=~ wexpect install Does anyone have anymore ideas?

• Jython 2.5.1: "ImportError: No Module named os"

  I looked through the other posts and bug reports and couldn't figure out what's causing this. I'm using Jython 2.5.1, in a Java project in Eclipse (Ubuntu 8.10). It has been added to the project as a standalone .jar file (I just replaced the old Jython 2.1 jar with this one). I'm running a script that uses the threading.py class. At some point the statement "import os" is evaluated from linecache.py and I get this error, which I can't seem to figure out how to fix: 'Execution failed. • Unable to run winpdb

  I tried to run winpdb.py, but I got an error saying that it could not find wxPython. This is strange to me because I know I have wxPython installed and included in my PYTHONPATH. I can import wx in the Python interpreter. Mac OS X 10.5.8 Python 2.6 PYTHONPATH=/sw/lib/python2.6/site-packages/:/usr/local/lib/wxPython-unicode-2.8.10.1/lib/python2.6/site-packages/wx-2.8-mac-unicode: $ python winpdb.py wxPython was not found. wxPython 2.6 or higher is required to run the winpdb GUI. wxPython is the graphical user interface toolkit used by Winpdb.   Firstly: I understand what WSGI is and how to use it I understand what "other" methods (Apache mod-python, fcgi, et al) are, and how to use them I understand their practical differences What I don't understand is how each of the various "other" methods work compared to something like UWSGI, behind the scenes. Does your server (Nginx, etc) route the request to your WSGI application and UWSGI creates a new Python interpreter for each request routed to it? How much different is is from the other more traditional / monkey patched methods is WSGI (aside from the different, easier Python interface that WSGI offers)? What light bulb moment am I missing?

• Is there any use for Bash scripting anymore?

  I just finished my second year as a university CS student, so my "real-world" knowledge is lacking. I learned Java my first year, continued with Java and picked up C and simple Bash scripting my second. This summer I'm trying to learn Perl (God help me). I've dabbled with Python a bit in the past. My question is, now that we have very readable, very writable scripting languages like Python, Ruby, Perl, etc, why does anyone write Bash scripts? Is there something I'm missing? I know my linux box has perl and python. Are they not ubiquitous enough? Is there really something that's easier to do in Bash than in some other hll?

• Having py2exe include my data files (like include_package_data)

  I have a Python app which includes non-Python data files in some of its subpackages. I've been using the include_package_data option in my setup.py to include all these files automatically when making distributions. It works well. Now I'm starting to use py2exe. I expected it to see that I have include_package_data=True and to include all the files. But it doesn't. It puts only my Python files in the library.zip, so my app doesn't work. How do I make py2exe include my data files?

• ctypes and PySide

  I'm building an app with PySide, there's some image manipulation that needs to be done and using Python code for this is way too slow. Therefore I hacked out a .dll file that will do it for me. The function definition is as follows: extern "C" { QRectF get_image_slant(QImage *img, float slantangle, float offset) { Now I can load this function in via ctypes. But I can't seem to get ctypes to accept a QImage. I tried calling it like this: ext.get_image_slant(QImage(), 0, 0) And the reply I get is: File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> ctypes.ArgumentError: argument 1: <type 'exceptions.TypeError'>: Don't know how to convert parameter 1 I tired casting the QImage to a c_void_p and it doesn't like that either. From what I can tell QImage() in python should map exactly to a QImage * in C, but Python doesn't seem to understand that.. Is there any way to force the casting?

• Client side html markdown conversion

  Hello, I've been trying to create a client side editor which allows the end user to create content in html or markdown. The user has two tabs for switching between the two. I managed to find some javascript that converts markdown to html, so if a user has been writing markdown and switches to the html tab, the html equivilant is shown. I haven't been able to find a javascript that converts html to markdown, only a python script. The python script is obviously server side. The tabs are just hyperlinks with script in there. Is there any way I can convert the markdown html when the user clicks the tab? The system has been created in python/django for reference Thanks

• QPluginLoader with PyQt modules as plugins: possible?

  Hi! I have a C++ application that loads externals plugins thanks to QPluginloader. QPluginLoader provides access to a Qt plugin. A Qt plugin is stored in a shared library (a DLL). The plugins have to inherit from a pure virtual class ( and Q_DECLARE_INTERFACE ) and QObject. I would like to create plugins by using python and PyQt. Is this possible without too much work? For instance if I have to convert the modules to C++ with boost::python, this could be nonsense, as PyQt is already a conversion from C++ to Python... Thanks!

• Look of the app - Py2exe / wxPython

  So my problem is the look and feel from my application, as it looks like an old look app. It is an wxPython application, and on python it runs fine and looks fine, but when I convert it to .exe using py2exe, the look is just bad. Now I know that if you are using XP you need some manifest to correct it but I am in other circumstances. I'm using Windows 7, and I'm using Python 2.6 (Yes, I am including the DLL's and the Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest). So my question is how can I solve this under these circumstances? NOTE: I tried to search on google, but the posts I found were rather old with people using XP and older python versions so I assumed it would be different?   Hi All, Very new to this, and I have no idea where to start. I want to schedule a python script using Task Scheduler in Windows 7. When I add a "New Action", I place the following command as the script/program : c:\python25\python.exe As the argument, I add the full path to the location of my python script path\script.py Here is my script: import datetime import csv import os now = datetime.datetime.now() print str(now) os.chdir('C:/Users/Brock/Desktop/') print os.getcwd() writer = csv.writer(open("test task.csv", "wb")) row = ('This is a test', str(now)) writer.writerow(row) I got an error saying the script could not run. • Which revision of html5lib is stable?

  html5lib notes that it's latest release (0.11) is somewhat old. Using the Python portion, I have recursion problems as noted in Issue 70 and Issue 59 but can't find a recent Mercurial revision that is stable.   Hi all Recently i asked two questions (1 and 2) about using OpenType features in programs written by python and .net languages, but didn't get an answer. i realized there is no way to change text rendering engines of operating systems, or force them to use OpenType. so now want to implement my own. such a program that: provides a text engine that receives glyph shapes from otf and ttf files and renders them in sequence of glyphs in text. generates all of OTL features can be used in other parts of applications like controls and components of .NET or python GUI libraries. if python and .net languages are not suitable in this situation, aware me about other programming languages or tools. comments and answers about text rendering system of common Operating Systems, or designing text engines compatible with unicode 5.02 protocol are welcomed.

• large amount of data in many text files - how to process?

  Hi, I have large amounts of data (a few terabytes) and accumulating... They are contained in many tab-delimited flat text files (each about 30MB). Most of the task involves reading the data and aggregating (summing/averaging + additional transformations) over observations/rows based on a series of predicate statements, and then saving the output as text, HDF5, or SQLite files, etc. I normally use R for such tasks but I fear this may be a bit large. Some candidate solutions are to 1) write the whole thing in C (or Fortran) 2) import the files (tables) into a relational database directly and then pull off chunks in R or Python (some of the transformations are not amenable for pure SQL solutions) 3) write the whole thing in Python Would (3) be a bad idea? I know you can wrap C routines in Python but in this case since there isn't anything computationally prohibitive (e.g., optimization routines that require many iterative calculations), I think I/O may be as much of a bottleneck as the computation itself. Do you have any recommendations on further considerations or suggestions? Thanks

• begin...end VS braces {...} VS indentation grouping

  Hi, everyone. I don't want to fuel any holy-wars here, but I need to ask your opinion. Right now I'm in process of designing a Hardware Description Language as a project in my university. I decided to take VHDL language and just add some syntax-sugar 'coz VHDL is rather obese in syntax. I decided to use indentation to group blocks of code (like in Python), and I'm strongly criticized for that. Originally Begin...End; grouping is used in VHDL language. I have no clue what are cons and pros of these 3 types of grouping, the only thing I know is that I like Python style and I don't understand if it's usage could be erroneous or something? What do you think? What do you like? (hope that I can get some feedback from people who extensively used different languages with different code-grouping syntax, like Pasca, Ada, Delphi, C, C++, C#, Java, Python)

• review on django book vs django tutorial

  going through both the django book and tutorial, am a bit confused to the differences in approach (aren't they both written by the same people?) can anyone who has experience in both give a short review on them? i have decent python skills (largely untested though), but no experience at all in web apps and am trying to decide which one to stick to. i briefly looked in to practical django projects but that was a bit too complicated for me, my background is primarily bash scripting, the python i know i learned from an instant hacking tutorial and diving into python.

• stumped by WSGI module import errors

  Hi, I'm writing a bare bones Python wsgi application and am getting stumped by module import errors. I have a .py file in the current directory which initially failed to import. By adding sys.path.insert(0, '/Users/guhar/Sites/acom') the import of the module worked. But I now try and import a module that I had installed via easy_install and it fails to import. I tried setting sys.path.insert(0, '/Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/') which contains the egg file, but to no avail. I would've thought that all packages under "/Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/" would be available to a WSGI application. Does anybody have any pointers?

  Hello all. I am following the the tutorial at http://www.py2exe.org/index.cgi/Tutorial to figure out how to use py2exe. I get down to step 3 where you are suppose to run the command: python setup.py py2exe I do that and then I get this error: 'python' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I have python 2.4 installed on my machine. any idea's? I am sure it is something simple.

  Hello all, First off, I'm posting this because when I was looking for a solution to the problem below, I could not find one on stackoverflow. So, I'm hoping to add a little bit to the knowledge base here. I need to process some files in a directory and need the files to be sorted numerically.   My python script uses subprocess to call a linux utility that is very noisy. I want to store all of the output to a log file, but only show some of it to the user. I thought the following would work, but the output does show up in my application until the utility has produced a significant amount of output. #fake_utility.py, just generates lots of output over time import time i = 0 while True: print hex(i)*512 i += 1 time.sleep(0.5) #filters output import subprocess proc = subprocess.Popen(['python','fake_utility.py'],stdout.subprocess.PIPE) for line in proc.stdout: #the real code does filtering here print "test:", line.rstrip() The behavior I really want is for the filter script to print each line as it is received from the subprocess. Sorta like what tee does but with python code. What am I missing? Is this even possible?
