• What is the explanation for "warning: assuming that the loop is not infinite"

  I had just taken the decision to change as many variables from unsigned to int and upon recompiling the code in question, was greeted by this warning message: freespace_state.c:203: warning: assuming that the loop is not infinite The line in question: for (x = startx; x <= endx; ++x, ++xptr) This loop is 60 lines of code (inc white space/brackets etc), and has a goto within it, and at least one occurrence of continue. In this case, I think I am appreciative that GCC is assuming this loop is not infinite, because, it should never loop indefinitely. What is GCC trying to tell me here?

• How to create GUI as inner class with WindowBuilder

  I would like to use WindowBuilder in Eclipse to construct Swing GUIs. The JPanels I need to build will be inner classes in a non-GUI wrapper, like so: public class MyWrapper extends MyBaseClass { ... class MyPanel extends JPanel { ... } } So my question is this: can I construct MyPanel using WindowBuilder? If so, how should I set it up? If anyone is interested, the wrapper is an abstract base class which the plug-ins I am developing for my app must extend; deployment concerns mean that it's not really practical to put the GUIs in a separate JAR either so I pretty much have to do it this way. My current workflow, which is awful, is to build the GUI in NetBeans and paste the entire generated class into Eclipse where I connect it up to the methods in my wrapper. I am very hopeful that WindowBuilder will let me work more reliably and efficiently if I can trick it into generating code in MyPanel, not MyWrapper. Thanks

Some days ago I got the idea (probably inspired by reading some objective c code) to include the default implementations as an inner class. Now some colleagues (all with much more java experience than me) saw this idea - feedback was between shocked and surprised ("this is working?"). I googled around a bit but didn't find much evidence of usefulness of this "pattern" (personal i like it): pdf-paper and a faq about code style What do you think - especially in those cases where an "default" implementation is tightly coupled to an interface. • Looping through a method without for/foreach/while

  Is there a way of calling a method/lines of code multiple times not using a for/foreach/while loop? For example, if I were to use to for loop: int numberOfIterations = 6; for(int i = 0; i < numberOfIterations; i++) { DoSomething(); SomeProperty = true; } The lines of code I'm calling don't use 'i' and in my opinion the whole loop declaration hides what I'm trying to do. This is the same for a foreach. I was wondering if there's a looping statement I can use that looks something like: do(6) { DoSomething(); SomeProperty = true; } It's really clear that I just want to execute that code 6 times and there's no noise involving index instantiating and adding 1 to some arbitrary variable. As a learning exercise I have written a static class and method: Do.Multiple(int iterations, Action action) Which works but scores very highly on the pretentious scale and I'm sure my peers wouldn't approve. I'm probably just being picky and a for loop is certainly the most recognisable, but as a learning point I was just wondering if there (cleaner) alternatives. Thanks. • <a> with an inner <span> not triggering :active state in IE 8

  I want to style the :active state of a button that is represented by an <a> tag. The <a> tag has an inner <span> (beacuse I want to add an icon to this button). I notice the :active state is triggered properly in everything but Internet Explorer 8. In IE 8, it appears that the area around the <span> (the <a>’s padding) triggers the :active state, but when clicking directly on the text within the <span>, the :active state is not triggered. • mod_rewrite all but two files causing loop

  I'm trying to set up a web site to allow the creation of a semaphore file to close the site. The logic I want to follow is: when the semaphore file exists and the request is not for /style.css or /favicon.icon show the content of /closed.html I have 1 and 3 working, but my exceptions for 2 result in a processing loop when style.css or favicon.ico are requested. This is my most recent attempt: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/style.css RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/favicon.ico RewriteCond /usr/local/etc/site/closed -f RewriteRule ^.*$ /closed.html [L] This is in a VirtualHost block, not in a Directory. There is no .htaccess file in play. I have also recently tried this, based on an answer I found elsewhere, but with the same (looping) result: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/style.css [OR] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/favicon.ico RewriteRule ^.*$ - [L] RewriteCond /usr/local/etc/site/closed -f RewriteRule ^.*$ /closed.html [L] I expect a request for /style.css or /favicon.ico to fail to match one of the first two rewrite conditions, which should prevent the URI from being rewritten, which should stop the mod_rewrite iteration. However, mod_rewrite seems to think the URI has been rewritten in those cases, and iterates over the rules again (and again, and again). The above works properly in all cases except for style.css or favicon.ico. In those cases I exceed the loop limits. What am I missing here to cause the rewrite iteration to stop when someone requests style.css or favicon.ico? EDIT: Here's a loglevel 9 example of what happens using the first ruleset when a request arrives for /style.css. So I declared some functions within the plugin, which I want to call from any other location, just like an object with methods. Is that even possible? So is it even possible? Or are there any other solutions? I don't want to use an normal unrelated jQuery-Class for this purpose. • Error Expected Loop VBScript

  I have a script that opens up an excel file if the password provided is correct. If its wrong, it prompts a message. It works perfectly when I add a loop at the end. However, the problem is whenever the password is wrong the script won't stop asking for the password because of the loop. What I want is the script to quit/close if the password is wrong. I tried to remove the loop and replaced it with "wscript.quit" but it always prompts the message "expected loop".   I have been expeirmenting with Watir, Nokogir and Hpricot. All of these use top-down approach which is my problem. i.e. they use element type to search element. I want to find out the element using the text without knowing element type. e.g. <element1> <element2> Text2 </element2> <element3> Text3 </element3> text4 </element1> I want is to get element2 and element1 etc by searching for Text2 and Text3. Please note that I do not know if elements are divs or tr/tds or links etc. I just know the text. Algorithem should be something like : iterated through all the elements, match inner text, if match get me the element and the parent element. Let me kow if this is possible in any way?

I bet that sounded more than a bit confusing, so I'll skip straight to an example. • Speeding up inner-joins and subqueries while restricting row size and table membership

  I'm developing an rss feed reader that uses a bayesian filter to filter out boring blog posts. The Stream table is meant to act as a FIFO buffer from which the webapp will consume 'entries'. I use it to store the temporary relationship between entries, users and bayesian filter classifications. After a user marks an entry as read, it will be added to the metadata table (so that a user isn't presented with material they have already read), and deleted from the stream table. Every three minutes, a background process will repopulate the Stream table with new entries (i.e. whenever the daemon adds new entries after the checks the rss feeds for updates). Problem: The query I came up with is hella slow. More importantly, the Stream table only needs to hold one hundred unread entries at a time; it'll reduce duplication, make processing faster and give me some flexibility with how I display the entries. The query (takes about 9 seconds on 3600 items with no indexes): insert into stream(entry_id, user_id) select entries.id, subscriptions_users.user_id from entries inner join subscriptions_users on subscriptions_users.subscription_id = entries.subscription_id where subscriptions_users.user_id = 1 and entries.id not in (select entry_id from metadata where metadata.user_id = 1) and entries.id not in (select entry_id from stream where user_id = 1); The query explained: insert into stream all of the entries from a user's subscription list (subscriptions_users) that the user has not read (i.e. do not exist in metadata) and which do not already exist in the stream. Attempted solution: adding limit 100 to the end speeds up the query considerably, but upon repeated executions will keep on adding a different set of 100 entries that do not already exist in the table (with each successful query taking longer and longer). This is close but not quite what I wanted to do. Does anyone have any advice (nosql?) or know a more efficient way of composing the query?

I ask the question better formulated again: To clarify my problem I added some new information: I got an MySQL DB with MyISAM tables. The two relevant tables are: * orders_products: orders_products_id, orders_id, product_id, product_name, product_price, product_name, product_model, final_price, ... * products: products_id, manufacturers_id, ... (for full information about the tables see screenshot products (Screenshot) and screenshot orders_products (Screenshot)) Now what I want is this: - Get all Orders who ordered products with manufacturers_id = 1. And the product name of the product of this order (with manufacturers_id = 1). Grouped by orders. What I did so far is this: SELECT op.orders_id, p.products_id, op.products_name, op.products_price, op.products_quantity FROM orders_products op , products p INNER JOIN products ON op.products_id = p.products_id WHERE p.manufacturers_id = 1 AND p.orders_id > 10000 p.orders_id 10000 for testing to get only a few order_id's. But thies query takes much time to get executed if it even works. Two times the sql server stucked. Where is the mistake?

I'm trying to optimize this query: SELECT `posts`.* FROM `posts` INNER JOIN `posts_tags` ON `posts`.id = `posts_tags`.post_id WHERE (((`posts_tags`.tag_id = 1))) ORDER BY posts.created_at DESC; The size of tables is 38k rows, and 31k and mysql uses "filesort" so it gets pretty slow. I tried to use different indexes, no luck.
