  • ruby on rails server is intermittently slow

    - by Richard
My rails installation was chugging along nicely. Last night we had to perform a hot-patch with was really a standard deploy of some exception code. Once capistrano finished the operation one of our admins discovered that there were two long running passenger processes. While we have deployed release over the past two weeks it would appear that these processes have been here and alive the whole time. Granted they could have been zombies or any other artifact and at this point we do not know what state they were in. Which leads me to the question: There are so many moving parts between the rails application and the OS/hardware that being a SME is probably no longer possible. So; how does a sysadmin perform root-cause analysis with any certainty? And: When do I just start rebooting servers?

  • How to show server errors in Rails 2.3.5 with JSON and jQuery

    - by Fortuity
I've got in-place editing on a page in my app (using Rails 2.3.5 and jQuery). I want to know how to display an error on the page when the update fails. I'm using ajax (an XMLHttpRequest) to save an update to a Comment object. The controller has an update method like this: def update @comment = Comment.find(params[:id]) respond_to do |format| # if @comment.update_attributes!(params[:comment]) if false #deliberately forcing a fail here to see what happens format.json { render :nothing => true } else format.json { render :json => @comment.errors, :status => :unprocessable_entity } end end end In Firebug, I can see the server returns a "422" (an appropriate validation error status code). But it's a response to an XMLHttpRequest so there is no redirect to an error page. I think I actually want to do this: format.json { render :json => @comment.errors} or maybe this: format.json {render :json => { :status => :error, :message => "Could not be saved" }.to_json, :status => 400 } and trigger some Javascript function that iterates through (and displays) any errors. I'm using a rails plugin http://github.com/janv/rest_in_place/ to implement the in-place editing. It doesn't appear to have any callback function to handle a failure. What are my options? Can I write some Javascript to respond to a failure condition without hacking the plugin? Do I have to hack the rest_in_place plugin to handle a failure condition? Is there a better plugin (for Rails or jQuery) that handles in-place editing, including failure conditions? UPDATE This post from Peter Bui (http://paydrotalks.com/posts/45-standard-json-response-for-rails-and-jquery) was helpful in showing how to handle an error message from the server using XMLHttpRequest.status. I looked at his implementation of a blog using ajax (http://github.com/paydro/talks). I'm surprised at the complexity required to handle a simple error condition. Usually Rails has all the goodness baked in but it seems server errors with JSON are out of scope. Can that be? I also looked at grimen's validatious-on-rails (http://github.com/grimen/validatious-on-rails/) which accommodates models validations when ajax XMLHttpRequest is used. It's not clear to me how I'd use it to handle the general case of a "save" failing when validations succeed. P.S. Please vote me up... so I can use more than one HTML link when I ask my question :-)

  • Ruby on Rails / PostgreSQL - Library not Loaded error when starting server- libq.5.dylib

    - by Mike McCoy
I have app that is running Ruby 1.9.2, Rails 3, and postgreSQL 8.3. It was originally setup and working with postgreSQL 9.1, but I uninstalled 9.1 and installed and changed to 8.3 insure compatibility on a Heroku shared database setup. It was running ok, but it's not now Now, when working on this app, when I run a database upgrade I get this error: dlopen(/Users/michaeljmccoy/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p290/gems/pg-0.12.2/lib/pg_ext.bundle, 9): Library not loaded: libpq.5.dylib Referenced from: /Users/michaeljmccoy/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p290/gems/pg-0.12.2/lib/pg_ext.bundle Reason: no suitable image found. However, when I add the path to my .profile file and restart the terminal window, I get the same errors.

  • Rails send mail with GMail

    - by Danny McClelland
Hi Everyone, I am on rails 2.3.5 and have the latest Ruby installed and my application is running well, except, GMail emails. I am trying to setup my gmail imap connection which has worked previously but now doesnt want to know. This is my code: # Be sure to restart your server when you modify this file # Uncomment below to force Rails into production mode when # you don't control web/app server and can't set it the proper way # ENV['RAILS_ENV'] ||= 'production' # Specifies gem version of Rails to use when vendor/rails is not present RAILS_GEM_VERSION = '2.3.5' unless defined? RAILS_GEM_VERSION # Bootstrap the Rails environment, frameworks, and default configuration require File.join(File.dirname(__FILE__), 'boot') Rails::Initializer.run do |config| # Gems config.gem "capistrano-ext", :lib => "capistrano" config.gem "configatron" # Make Time.zone default to the specified zone, and make Active Record store time values # in the database in UTC, and return them converted to the specified local zone. config.time_zone = "London" # The internationalization framework can be changed to have another default locale (standard is :en) or more load paths. # All files from config/locales/*.rb,yml are added automatically. # config.i18n.load_path << Dir[File.join(RAILS_ROOT, 'my', 'locales', '*.{rb,yml}')] #config.i18n.default_locale = :de # Your secret key for verifying cookie session data integrity. # If you change this key, all old sessions will become invalid! # Make sure the secret is at least 30 characters and all random, # no regular words or you'll be exposed to dictionary attacks. config.action_controller.session = { :session_key => '_base_session', :secret => '7389ea9180b15f1495a5e73a69a893311f859ccff1ffd0fa2d7ea25fdf1fa324f280e6ba06e3e5ba612e71298d8fbe7f15fd7da2929c45a9c87fe226d2f77347' } config.active_record.observers = :user_observer end ActiveSupport::CoreExtensions::Date::Conversions::DATE_FORMATS.merge!(:default => '%d/%m/%Y') ActiveSupport::CoreExtensions::Time::Conversions::DATE_FORMATS.merge!(:default => '%d/%m/%Y') require "will_paginate" ActionMailer::Base.delivery_method = :smtp ActionMailer::Base.smtp_settings = { :enable_starttls_auto => true, :address => "smtp.gmail.com", :port => 587, :domain => "XXXXXXXX.XXX", :authentication => :plain, :user_name => "XXXXXXXXXX.XXXXXXXXXX.XXX", :password => "XXXXX" } But the above just results in an SMTP auth error in the production log. I have read varied reports of this not working in Rails 2.2.2 but nothing for 2.3.5, anyone got any ideas? Thanks, Danny

  • Why would I want to install node.js in my Rails Application?

    - by Crazy JIm
Okay guys, I'm super confused. I thought node.js was a sever side framwork, basically the js version of Ruby's Rails or PHP's Zend. However, I'm having some difficulty with turbolinks, and it seems to be the way to fix it is through installing node.js I mean, I don't understand this at all. How can two frameworks work together like this? Also, it's not a gem (that REALLY would have confused me), you have to install node.js it onto your local machine by running (in the case of Ubuntu) sudo apt-get install nodejs Firstly, how does this totally separate framwork have any bearing on rails? Secondly, surely this isn't fixing the problem forever? When you specify a gem in your gemfile, the server knows what external libraries to install. How does the server know to install nodejs?

  • What set of tools make up "the rails way" of testing javascript in the browser?

    - by Jordan Feldstein
What's the concensus for doing in-browser (either headless or remote-controlled) testing of javascript? Unit testing my JS is nice, but can't protect against irresponsible changes to the DOM. Unit testing of the JS and functional testing of the views to make sure they both provide and utilize the same, correct DOM, might work, but then the link between JS and DOM is being covered in two places which seems brittle or cumbersome. Is there an acknowledged "Rails Way" to implement full-stack tests, where I can run my javascript against the DOM rendered by the rest of the app, and check the results? (Something like what PHPUnit and Selenium give us, but inside the rails framework?)

  • Is is OK to use a non-primary key as the id in a rails resource?

    - by nPn
I am getting ready to set up a resource for some new api calls to my rails application. I am planning on calling the resource devices ie resources :devices This is going to represent a android mobile devices I know this will get me routes such as GET devices/:id In most cases :id would be an integer representing the primary key, and in the controller we would use :id as such: GET devices/1 @device = Device.find(params[:id]) In this case I would like to use :id as the google_cloud_messaging_reg_id So I would like to have requests like this: GET devices/some_long_gcm_id and then in the controller , just us params[:id] to look up the device by the gcm registration id. This seem more natural, since the device will know it's gcm id rather than it's rails integer id. Are there any reasons I should avoid doing this?

  • Hosting rails sites; vps or shared, and how much ram? [closed]

    - by raphael_turtle
Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I have 3 rails sites to launch, all of which are fairly small and consisting of a custom cms, one with an online store, and 2 sinatra sites which are mainly static, portfolio sites. What would be the best way to host these sites (I've deployed on dreamhost shared before and some vps's) Is it best to manage them together under one vps? e.g linode $20/m (for the cheapest option, 512mb and would that even be enough ram?) or keep each rails site separate and host each one on a small vps? e.g $4/m (there's often lots of deals like this on webhostingtalk) I'm currently hosting the sinatra sites for free on heroku but finding it a bit slow sometimes.

  • How can I defend Ruby on Rails against customers' not technical opinion?

    - by okeen
My customer, a translations business owner, just told me that he has been reading about Ruby on Rails and told me that "there are more PHP guys around there" and "it seems the community prefers it". What would you, as software engineer and freelancer, say to the customer to achieve these goals: Sell Make him see that the technology is my expert decision and Rails is as good or better than PHP (+ whatever framework) for this particular project. UPDATE: Thank you all for the suggestions! Tomorrow I've got another meeting with him, let's see how it goes, I will update again :) UPDATE 2: Finally I told him to read this thread and the result has been fantastic: He gave me the project and we are going to start right now. Thank you all for the help, you have free beer in my charge if we see someday :) BTW: I learned the lesson: be as transparent as possible, because if you believe in yourself and your work, there is no question compromising enough to beat you. regards

I am trying to install an app on a shared server. If i understand properly because i am using a shared server, and that Dreamhost doesn't suppose rails 3.2.8 I must use FCGI, although i am not sure how to install and to make it run properly. From this tutorial http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Rails_3. To my understand here what I did, In dreamhost, activate PHP 5.x.x FastCGI and made sure Phusion Passenger is unchecked Create an app on my localmachine Because rails doesn't create a dispatch and access file i create the two following file in my /public folder dispatch.fcgi #!/home/username/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p327/bin/ruby ENV['RAILS_ENV'] ||= 'production' ENV['HOME'] ||= `echo ~`.strip ENV['GEM_HOME'] = File.expand_path('~/.rvm/gems/ruby 1.9.3-p327') ENV['GEM_PATH'] = File.expand_path('~/.rvm/gems/ruby 1.9.3-p327') + ":" + File.expand_path('~/.rvm/gems/ruby 1.9.3-p327@global') require 'fcgi' require File.join(File.dirname(__FILE__), '../config/environment') class Rack::PathInfoRewriter def initialize(app) @app = app end def call(env) env.delete('SCRIPT_NAME') parts = env['REQUEST_URI'].split('?') env['PATH_INFO'] = parts[0] env['QUERY_STRING'] = parts[1].to_s @app.call(env) end end Then created the file .htaccess <IfModule mod_fastcgi.c> AddHandler fastcgi-script .fcgi </IfModule> <IfModule mod_fcgid.c> AddHandler fcgid-script .fcgi </IfModule> Options +FollowSymLinks +ExecCGI RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.fcgi/$1 [QSA,L] ErrorDocument 500 "Rails application failed to start properly" Uploaded to a folder and pointed to the public folder in dreamhost Made sure dispatch.fcgi has 777 for write ssh and run the following command in the public folder : ./dispatch.fcgi Crossing my finger but it doesn't work I get the following errors ./dispatch.fcgi: line 1: ENV[RAILS_ENV]: command not found ./dispatch.fcgi: line 1: =: command not found ./dispatch.fcgi: line 2: ENV[HOME]: command not found ./dispatch.fcgi: line 2: =: command not found ./dispatch.fcgi: line 3: syntax error near unexpected token (' ./dispatch.fcgi: line 3:ENV['GEM_HOME'] = File.expand_path('~/.rvm/gems/ruby 1.9.3-p327')' Doing wrong??? • Why is Routes.rb not loading the IPs from cache?

    - by Christian Fazzini
I am testing this in local. My ip is 127.0.0.1. The ip_permissions table, is empty. When I browse the site, everything works as expected. Now, I want to simulate browsing the site with a banned IP. So I add the IP into the ip_permissions table via: IpPermission.create!(:ip => '127.0.0.1', :note => 'foobar', :category => 'blacklist') In Rails console, I clear the cache via; Rails.cache.clear. I browse the site. I don't get sent to pages#blacklist. If I restart the server. And browse the site, then I get sent to pages#blacklist. Why do I need to restart the server every time the ip_permissions table is updated? Shouldn't it fetch it based on cache? Routes look like: class BlacklistConstraint def initialize @blacklist = IpPermission.blacklist end def matches?(request) @blacklist.map { |b| b.ip }.include? request.remote_ip end end Foobar::Application.routes.draw do match '/(*path)' => 'pages#blacklist', :constraints => BlacklistConstraint.new .... end My model looks like: class IpPermission < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :ip, :note, :category validates_uniqueness_of :ip, :scope => [:category] validates :category, :inclusion => { :in => ['whitelist', 'blacklist'] } def self.whitelist Rails.cache.fetch('whitelist', :expires_in => 1.month) { self.where(:category => 'whitelist').all } end def self.blacklist Rails.cache.fetch('blacklist', :expires_in => 1.month) { self.where(:category => 'blacklist').all } end end

  • Missing a constant on load.. how can i get around this? (Rails::Plugin::OpenID)

    - by Chris Kimpton
I have a Rails 2 project that I am trying to upgrade to Rails 3, but getting some issues with bundler. When I run "rake", it runs the tests just fine. But when I run "bundle exec rake" it fails to find a constant. The error is this: /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:131:in `const_missing': uninitialized constant Rails::Plugin::OpenID (NameError) from /Users/kimptoc/Documents/ruby/borisbikes/borisbikestats.pre3/vendor/plugins/open_id_authentication/init.rb:16:in `evaluate_init_rb' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:182:in `call' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:182:in `evaluate_method' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:166:in `call' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:90:in `run' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:90:in `each' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:90:in `send' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:90:in `run' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:276:in `run_callbacks' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/actionpack-2.3.9/lib/action_controller/dispatcher.rb:51:in `send' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/actionpack-2.3.9/lib/action_controller/dispatcher.rb:51:in `run_prepare_callbacks' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/rails-2.3.9/lib/initializer.rb:631:in `prepare_dispatcher' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/rails-2.3.9/lib/initializer.rb:185:in `process' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/rails-2.3.9/lib/initializer.rb:113:in `send' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/rails-2.3.9/lib/initializer.rb:113:in `run' from /Users/kimptoc/Documents/ruby/borisbikes/borisbikestats.pre3/config/environment.rb:9 from ./test/test_helper.rb:2:in `require' from ./test/test_helper.rb:2 I have these gems installed: $ gem list *** LOCAL GEMS *** actionmailer (2.3.9) actionpack (2.3.9) activerecord (2.3.9) activeresource (2.3.9) activesupport (2.3.9) authlogic (2.1.3) bundler (1.0.7) gravtastic (2.2.0) linecache (0.43) mocha (0.9.10) newrelic_rpm (2.13.4) parseexcel (0.5.2) rack (1.1.0) rack-openid (1.1.1) rails (2.3.9) rake (0.8.7) ruby-debug-base (0.10.5.jb2, 0.10.4) ruby-debug-ide (0.4.15) ruby-openid (2.1.8, 2.1.7, 2.0.4) sqlite3-ruby (1.3.2) The bundler Gemfile is as follows: source 'http://rubygems.org' #gem 'rails', '3.0.3' gem "rails", "2.3.9" gem "activesupport", "2.3.9" gem "ruby-openid", "2.1.7", :require => "openid" #gem "authlogic-oid", "1.0.4" # Bundle edge Rails instead: # gem 'rails', :git => 'git://github.com/rails/rails.git' gem 'sqlite3-ruby', :require => 'sqlite3' gem "authlogic", "= 2.1.3" gem "newrelic_rpm" # gem "facebooker" gem "parseexcel" gem 'gravtastic', '= 2.2.0' gem "rack-openid", '=1.1.1', :require => 'rack/openid' # not sure what this does... gem "mocha" I have these plugins installed: 2dc_jqgrid authlogic_openid open_id_authentication squirrel I see these similar questions: Missing a constant on load.. how can i get around this? and Requiring gem in Rails 3 Controller failing with "Constant Missing" But their solutions dont seem to work for my situation. • how do I redirect from a subdirectory to another directory, but strip off the original subdirectory

    - by Eric Cope
I have a Ruby on Rails app running on 12001. I am currently redirecting a subdomain to 127.0.0.1:12001 using some ReWriteCond detection. Now I want to redirect my subdirectory to that rails app. http[s]://domain.com/redmine to 127.0.0.1:12001 The current rules apply REQUEST_URI to the above rails path, but I need to strip "/redmine" from the front of REQUEST_URI... Any ideas?

  • Simple, current how-to install mod-security on cPanel server?

    - by linux911
Does anyone have or know of a simple, up to date how to for installing mod-security on cPanel and configuring it after install? Every how to on the web I've found is at least two years old and is based on a mod-security addon function in cPanel which doesn't exist anymore. There are a couple of free add ons to simplify selecting rule files (configserver's for example) but there's no documentation on which rules a cPanel system "should" be using and so on.

  • Bundler isn't loading gems

    - by Garrett
I have been having a problem with using Bundler and being able to access my gems without having to require them somewhere, as config.gem used to do that for me (as far as I know). In my Rails 3 app, I defined my Gemfile like so: clear_sources source "http://gemcutter.org" source "http://gems.github.com" bundle_path "vendor/bundler_gems" ## Bundle edge rails: git "git://github.com/rails/arel.git" git "git://github.com/rails/rack.git" gem "rails", :git => "git://github.com/rails/rails.git" ## Bundle gem "mongo_mapper", :git => "git://github.com/jnunemaker/mongomapper.git" gem "bluecloth", ">= 2.0.0" Then I run gem bundle, it bundles it all up like expected. Inside the environment.rb file that is included within boot.rb it looks like this: # DO NOT MODIFY THIS FILE module Bundler file = File.expand_path(__FILE__) dir = File.dirname(file) ENV["PATH"] = • Rail 3 custom renderer: where do put this code?

    - by Derick Bailey
I'm following along with Yehuda's example on how to build a custom renderer for Rails 3, according to this post: http://www.engineyard.com/blog/2010/render-options-in-rails-3/ I've got my code working, but I'm having a hard time figuring out where this code should live. Right now, I've got my code stuck right inside of my controller file. Doing this, everything works. When I move the code to the lib folder, though, I have explicitly 'require' my file in the controller that needs the renderer or it won't work. Yes, the file gets loaded when it sits in the lib folder, automatically. but the code to add the renderer isn't working for some reason, until I do a require on it. where should I put my code to add the renderer and mime type, so that rails 3 will pick it up and register it for me, without me having to manually require the file in my controller?

  • Override Devise Sign-in with reCaptcha

    - by Bashar Abdullah
I'm trying to override the Rails devise login to include recaptcha. I followed the steps here http://presentations.royvandewater.com/authentication-with-devise.html#8 however for some reason, authentication always fails. To isolate the problem, I removed all my code and called super directly class SessionsController < Devise::SessionsController def create super end end file is at: Rails.root/app/controllers/sessions_controller.rb the slide suggest Rails.root/app/controllers/sessions.rb but I assume that was just a mistake. Trying it out didn't help either. I even copied the full Sessions Controller code into my own, still gives the problem. Authentication fails here specifically: resource = warden.authenticate!(:scope => resource_name, :recall => "#{controller_path}#new") Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

  • Can't connect to Sunspot server in Ubuntu server

    - by Chris Benseler
I followed the steps in https://github.com/outoftime/sunspot/wiki/Adding-Sunspot-search-to-Rails-in-5-minutes-or-less to install & set up Sunspot search in Rails in a Mac OS and it is ok. In a Ubuntu server, there's connection refused error. When I run rake sunspot:solr:start and the proccess starts. The file sunspot-solr-development.pid is created in /tmp/pids But when I try to reindex rake sunspot:reindex ... rake aborted! Connection refused - connect(2) I tried to run the commands with sudo and gave permission 777 to the project files, but there's still error. Rails 3.0.8 Don't know where else to search for a solution...

  • Apache Mod_rewrite rule working on one server, but not another

    - by Mason
I am using mod_jk and mod_rewrite on httpd 2.2.15. I have a rule.... RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/video/play\.xhtml.* RewriteRule ^/video/(.*) /video/play.xhtml?vid=$1 [PT] I just want to rewrite something like /video/videoidhere to /video/play.xhtml?vid=videoidhere This works perfectly on my developer machine, but on production I get a 404 (generated by Jboss, not Apache). here is the tail of access.log and rewrite.log on prod (broken). the rewrite.log is exactly the same on dev(working) applying pattern '^/video/(.*)' to uri '/video/46279d4daf5440b2844ec831413dcc3b' RewriteCond: input='/video/46279d4daf5440b2844ec831413dcc3b' pattern='!^/video/play\.xhtml.*' => matched rewrite '/video/46279d4daf5440b2844ec831413dcc3b' -> '/video/play.xhtml?vid=46279d4daf5440b2844ec831413dcc3b' split uri=/video/play.xhtml?vid=46279d4daf5440b2844ec831413dcc3b -> uri=/video/play.xhtml, args=vid=46279d4daf5440b2844ec831413dcc3b forcing '/video/play.xhtml' to get passed through to next API URI-to-filename handler "GET /video/46279d4daf5440b2844ec831413dcc3b HTTP/1.1" 404 420 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.6) Gecko/20100628 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Firefox/3.6.6" I can access http://www.fivi.com/video/play.xhtml?vid=46279d4daf5440b2844ec831413dcc3b but not /video/46279d4daf5440b2844ec831413dcc3b Both server are even using the EXACT same httpd.conf, and modules. • Ruby on Rails (Redmine) on Apache - 503 Error

    - by andrewtweber
I am running a Ruby on Rails application called Redmine. It's been working fine, but today it's giving a 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable error. (It was initially set up by an employee who is now gone.) I check the error log and it says: [Mon Nov 21 11:03:30 2011] [error] (111)Connection refused: proxy: HTTP: attempt to connect to 127.0.0.1:3000 (127.0.0.1) failed [Mon Nov 21 11:03:30 2011] [error] ap_proxy_connect_backend disabling worker for (127.0.0.1) Here's a chunk of my Apache config <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName redmine.{domain}.com RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/%{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ balancer://redminecluster%{REQUEST_URI} [P,QSA,L] </VirtualHost> <Proxy balancer://redminecluster> BalancerMember http://127.0.0.1:3000 </Proxy> I found this link: http://www.redmine.org/boards/2/topics/20561 which suggests I simply need to "start the redmine server." I've tried /etc/init.d/redmine start which gives me this output => Booting Mongrel => Rails 2.3.11 application starting on http://0.0.0.0:3000 The contents of /etc/init.d/redmine: cd /var/redmine sudo ruby script/server -d -e production One thing I immediately notice is that it says 0.0.0.0 instead of 127.0.0.1. In addition, running top or ps -ef shows no record of a "mongrel" or "redmine" process. I've also tried restarting Apache before and after starting redmine. Not sure where to go from here.

  • memory tuning with rails/unicorn running on ubuntu

    - by user970193
I am running unicorn on Ubuntu 11, Rails 3.0, and Ruby 1.8.7. It is an 8 core ec2 box, and I am running 15 workers. CPU never seems to get pinned, and I seem to be handling requests pretty nicely. My question concerns memory usage, and what concerns I should have with what I am seeing. (if any) Here is the scenario: Under constant load (about 15 reqs/sec coming in from nginx), over the course of an hour, each server in the 3 server cluster loses about 100MB / hour. This is a linear slope for about 6 hours, then it appears to level out, but still maybe appear to lose about 10MB/hour. If I drop my page caches using the linux command echo 1 /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches, the available free memory shoots back up to what it was when I started the unicorns, and the memory loss pattern begins again over the hours. Before: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 7130244 5005376 2124868 0 113628 422856 -/+ buffers/cache: 4468892 2661352 Swap: 33554428 0 33554428 After: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 7130244 4467144 2663100 0 228 11172 -/+ buffers/cache: 4455744 2674500 Swap: 33554428 0 33554428 My Ruby code does use memoizations and I'm assuming Ruby/Rails/Unicorn is keeping its own caches... what I'm wondering is should I be worried about this behaviour? FWIW, my Unicorn config: worker_processes 15 listen "#{CAPISTRANO_ROOT}/shared/pids/unicorn_socket", :backlog = 1024 listen 8080, :tcp_nopush = true timeout 180 pid "#{CAPISTRANO_ROOT}/shared/pids/unicorn.pid" GC.respond_to?(:copy_on_write_friendly=) and GC.copy_on_write_friendly = true before_fork do |server, worker| STDERR.puts "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX BEFORE FORK" print_gemfile_location defined?(ActiveRecord::Base) and ActiveRecord::Base.connection.disconnect! defined?(Resque) and Resque.redis.client.disconnect old_pid = "#{CAPISTRANO_ROOT}/shared/pids/unicorn.pid.oldbin" if File.exists?(old_pid) && server.pid != old_pid begin Process.kill("QUIT", File.read(old_pid).to_i) rescue Errno::ENOENT, Errno::ESRCH # already killed end end File.open("#{CAPISTRANO_ROOT}/shared/pids/unicorn.pid.ok", "w"){|f| f.print($$.to_s)} end after_fork do |server, worker| defined?(ActiveRecord::Base) and ActiveRecord::Base.establish_connection defined?(Resque) and Resque.redis.client.connect end Is there a need to experiment enforcing more stringent garbage collection using OobGC (http://unicorn.bogomips.org/Unicorn/OobGC.html)? Or is this just normal behaviour, and when/as the system needs more memory, it will empty the caches by itself, without me manually running that cache command? Basically, is this normal, expected behaviour? tia

  • Trouble with mod_proxy and mongrel_rails

    - by x3ro
Hey there I'm trying to set up a mod_proxy - mongrel combination, but somehow, apache/mod_proxy is unable to access mongrel locally. The following is my configuration for mod_proxy: ProxyRequests Off ProxyPreserveHost On <Location / ProxyPass http://localhost:3000/ ProxyPassReverse http://localhost:3000/ Order deny, allow Allow from all </Location Mongrel/Rails ist running just fine, because I can access it from my browser, and even with lynx on the server. However, I get the following error when trying to use the proxy: [error] [client 127.0.0.1] Invalid Content-Length I would appreciate any help :D PS: Oh, and the server is running Plesk to configure vhosts, if thats important.
