• Booting Ubuntu on HP Pavilion g7 - 13.04 [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? 24 answers I have a HP Pavilion G7 with an AMD A4 processor and Radeon graphics. I want to install Ubuntu on my laptop but whenever I put the Ubuntu live CD in it and boot to it, the screen shows the Ubuntu logo and the four little dots then after about a minute or two the screen goes black. I can tell the screen is still on but it doesn't have anything on it. I'm beginning to wonder if its a driver problem but I can't really install the drivers when I cant even get Ubuntu to show anything except a loading screen. I've already tried using 12.04 and 12.10 and all the others down to Ubuntu 10. none of them worked. All the other versions don't even show the Ubuntu logo. I'd prefer to have Ubuntu 13.04 on it if its possible but I haven't had any luck finding a solution. I've also tried using WUBI installer in Windows 7 but all that did was make my computer slower for windows and it does the same with the screen when i boot it to Ubuntu. I'm trying to use Ubuntu alongside Windows 7. I cant find any solution on Google. It wont load anything and I know that there is a program called grub on Ubuntu that I used on my desktop computer when it had graphics trouble but the trouble with my desktop was minor things like the screen would flash and then show weird patterns on the screen. But I can't find anything on what to do with the HP laptop. Please help. I use this laptop a lot for games on Windows 7 and I just want to use Ubuntu for when I take my laptop to school and for school stuff. Edit: I just tried booting it in nomodeset and some other things and still didn't work. It did boot up but now when it goes to install alongside windows it crashes and says Ubuntu is forcing reboot or something like that Also, this question is different from the black screen at boot issue because when I do use nomodeset on my computer and select install Ubuntu it will go as far as the screen where you can choose to replace Windows or run alongside Windows. Then after I click continue it ejects the live CD and turns off my computer without installing anything. The error message it shows when it ejects the disk says signal 15, shutting down - modem manager [1675]: <info> Caught nm-dispatcher.action: Caught signal 15, shutting down... *Deconfiguring network interfaces... • Why is my system freezing when I switch users

  Hello I've recently upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 64bit. I'm running AMD graphics with the proprietary drivers. I have two user accounts. Mine(administrator) and my girlfriend's(standard) My girlfriend clicks "switch user" from my lock screen and logs in fine. I then try to click "switch user" from her lock screen and everything goes black. Then the monitor blinks on and off with just a single cursor. I have no way to access the terminal, the system is unresponsive and I have to hit the power button. Even ctrl + alt + f4 or ctrl + alt + t doesn't get me a terminal. When I press the power button on my system, it does start printing out the shutdown sequence on the monitor. Here is my .xsession-errors Script for ibus started at run_im. • Network manager broadband modem BUG

  just upgraded to ubuntu 12.10 from 12.04 using wvdial to connect to the internet (network manager doesn't detect my modem Huawei E367 ), though the new network manager detected my modem and asked me the enter the PIN, it doesn't connect, it shows my provider (Orange TN) and the signal (2 bars) but dosn't connect and I can't clic on the name of my broadband (ORANGE TN) . Just hoping that there will be a bug-fix for it or any other solution so I can go back to using the network manger :)

• Slow wireless on Dell XPS 14 ultrabook

  I've got Ubuntu 12.04 running on this Dell XPS 14 Ultrabook (L421X). Everything is working but my wireless transfer rates are low. I'm getting about 1MB/s download speed on the ultrabook vs 15MB/s on the E6500. If I move into the room with the access point the speed climbs to 15MB/s so I'm guessing it is a signal strength issue but wavemon shows comparable signals to those seen by the E6500. Are there any settings I can tweak in hopes of making it faster?

• How do I get a TP-LINK WN723N wireless USB adapter working?

  I am having trouble using a TP-LINK WN723N wireless USB adapter on my computer which is running Ubuntu 12.04. When I plug the adapter in, the computer automatically picks up a signal from my wireless router but only connects to the internet for a short amount of time before losing the connection. • How best to look up objects by label?

  I am writing the server backed by a pre-written API. I'm going to get a number of strings representing ports, signals, paths, etc etc etc. I need to look up the object associated with a given label, these objects are all in memory (no sql magic to do this for me). My question is, how best do I associate a given unique label with the mutable object it represents? I have enough objects that looking through every signal or every port to find the one that matches is possible, but may be slightly too slow. To be honest the direct 'look at every object' method is probably good enough for so small a body of objects and anything else is premature optimization, but I still am curious what the proper solution would be if I thought my signals were going to grow a bit larger. As I see it there are two options available. First would be to to create a 'store' that is a simple map between object and label. I could have it so that every time I call addObject the object is automatically saved into a hashmap or the like. This works, but relies on my properly adding and deleting each object so the map doesn't grow indefinitely. The biggest issue to me is that this involves having some hidden static map in my ModelObject class that just feels...wrong somehow. The other option is to have some method that can interpret the labels. All of these labels are derived from the underlying objects. So I can look at the signal label, for instance, and say "these 20 characters are the port" to figure out what port I need. This would allow me to quickly figure out what I need. However, if the label method is changed the translateLabelToObject method needs to be updated as well or everything breaks. Which solution is cleaner, or possibly a cleaner solution than either of above? For the record I'm working with sufficient number of variables to make direct comparison a little slow, but not enough to be concerned about memory overhead, written in java. All objects that have labels I need to look up extend the same parent class.

  I run an Ubuntu 12.04 server as a virtual machine on a VMWare ESXi 5 server. I've configured VMWare to shut the quest machines down the sane way (with an ACPI (if I understand it righ) shutdown signal so that guest OSes would do it). And this works with other VMs (running Windows 7 Professional and openSuSE) but doesn't work with the Ubuntu server - VMWare still offers just to power them off when I ask it to stop the guest. Any ideas how to fix this?

• Wifi problems with Ubuntu 13.10

  I should probably say straight off that I am brand new to Ubuntu. I installed 13.10 alongside Windows 7 a couple of days ago and I've managed to clear up all the little problems, apart from with the wifi. My internet is fine using an ethernet cable. I can connect to the wifi, and it tells me that the signal is good, but for the vast majority of the time I can't load anything, and system monitor tells me that I am sending and receiving nothing. The problem is somewhere in Ubuntu. It works fine on Windows 7, my Android phone and all of my flatmates laptops. I know I'm not the only one with this problem, but the fixes I've seen either don't work or I don't understand them enough to carry them out. Help? • Dual VGA monitors with Quadro FX 580?

  I have a machine with a Quadro FX 580 card (DVI and two Displayport). Attached to it are two 19" Acer screens, which are both (annoyingly) VGA. The first one works perfectly, with a DVI-VGA adaptor. The second one doesn't work. It's got a VGA cable, which goes into a VGA-DVI converted, which then goes into a DVI-Displayport converter. Initally, I was getting 'Cable Unplugged' on the screen, and it couldn't be seen by Windows or the nVidia control panel. After swapping the VGA-DVI adaptor (which works perfectly on another machine), Windows can now see the monitor. The nVidia panel sees the model and native resolution, but I get a constant 'No Signal' error. Switching to the other Displayport makes no difference. I suspect that the card is seeing a DVI connection plugged into it (nVididaCP shows the monitor as having a DVI connection), and it only sending out a digital signal because of this. Does anyone know of a solution (other than trying to get a Displayport-VGA adaptor), or of a way to force the card to see it as VGA? Thanks, ~Dentrasi

• Are HDMI to VGA Adapters Really Device-Specific?

  There are a lot of devices on the market right now (especially mobile devices) with a Micro-HDMI or Mini-HDMI port and no VGA or D-Sub output. Most manufacturers of said devices sell a cable that looks something like this: I have yet to find a cable like this that claims to work on a wide array of devices. In general, these cables claim to work with one specific device only. The way these cables work, I think, is that analog VGA signals are sent from the HDMI port on the device. This should work for devices that have special hardware on the motherboard/GPU capable of driving this. Is it the case that these cables have to be custom designed for each device? Or, is it rather that any device which possesses this special "signaling of analog VGA over the HDMI port" can be made to work with a cable that is physically compatible (i.e. the HDMI end plugs into the device and the VGA end accepts a VGA monitor cable)? Note that I am not looking for a product recommendation, just a conceptual clarification on what exactly these devices are doing. Also, a few remarks: The cables like the one depicted here are not digital to analog converters. I know about these: they are expensive, and they are the ONLY solution if your device only outputs a digital signal and is incapable of driving analog VGA over the HDMI port. The cables like the one depicted here are not straight crossover cables from VGA to HDMI, either. The crossover cables are designed to send a digital HDMI signal over the VGA port's wires; that is, the wire protocol is HDMI (digital) but the physical pinout is the same as VGA, even though nothing analog is happening. Once again, this is not the behavior that, I believe, the devices which I'm talking about in this question are doing. The cabling and devices that this question is about transmit the analog VGA data over the HDMI port (the HDMI port is in the device outputting the data, and the VGA side is the monitor/projector).
