• Turning laptop into WAP using netgear WNA1100? (stuck at hostapd)

  I have a Netgear WNA1100 usb wifi adapter. I have installed Atheros driver from Forum Details (btw name of the file is ath9k_htc-installer.1.0.1-maverick-fixed.deb). I wish to make a setup like connectify(windows) on ubuntu, so that I can connect my phone wirelessly to my laptop via Netgear WNA1100 (behaving as AP) and eventually use internet via my wired lan. I have installed the above mentioned driver, hostapd and hostap-utils. Following is my hostapd.conf file. ssid=vks interface=wlan1 # The interface name of the card driver=ath9k_htc # The card driver macaddr_acl=0 accept_mac_file=/etc/hostapd.accept deny_mac_file=/etc/hostapd.deny ieee80211x=1 # Use 802.1X authentication auth_algs=1 ignore_broadcast_ssid=0 wpa=2 wpa_passphrase=88888888 wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK wpa_pairwise=TKIP rsn_pairwise=CCMP When i run sudo hostapd /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf I get an error invalid/unknown driver 'ath9k_htc # The card driver I think the driver is installed fine, as i can see the blue led blinking on the netgear adapter, which was not blinking earlier. Can someone please guide me how to achieve this setup? I will appreciate an example hostapd.conf file with a simple wpa_psk security setup. Please be detailed and descriptive with commands. How to run and end it. Following is output from lsmod, i have only pasted the entries which had ath and ath related info. Which driver shall i use. • double screen in ubuntu 12.04?

  I am using ubuntu 12.04 and my video card is ATI Radeon 5000. I cannot use double screen (extended version).   If I run the python code below (almost entirely from this useful blog post) then I get three identical nasty looking error messages in the terminal. What might be causing them? I note the number (5857 in the example below) changes slightly on each run. What does this number signify? Is it a memory location or something similar? • Authentication system brainstorm

  Hi. We got multiple small websites (microsites) and one main high traffic one with big users base. Right now the requirement is to build authentication system which should allow users to loign with the same identity across the network. All website are running on different domains, powered by Drupal 6 CMS and have separate databases (so sharing tables with prefix is not an option + it creates a huge mess in the db). Here is the set of core requirements I came up with: Users should be able to login with the same credentials to all sites within the network User’s data sharing between Main site (storage) and all micro sites within the network Data synchronization across the network when user changes the data (update email or password for example) The login/registration process should be seamless and consistent Register on any of the sites across the network and use that identity to login later on. In the future there might be a need to add openid authentication options. Basically we are looking at something similar stackexchange does, but not sure if they have central users base on not. I was thinking about custom solution which will include 2 parts (modules), one will be stored on the Main site for users data storing and responding to requests from clients. Second part (module) will be placed on each microsite, which is going to send requests to the Master. Some kind of client - server setup. One of the complications I see right away is #3. Data Synhcronization across the network. I just don't want to reinvent the wheel and maybe some work is already done in this direction. Looking forward to your ideas on how to approach this project. • Problems compiling with Quickly

  Welcome to another of my questions about compiling! :P So, after days of stress trying to compile my app, first manually, after porting the project to Quickly, I decided to create the project from scratch using this time Quickly. Now I've finished the app, it works great using quickly run and I haven't added any new file, just removed, replaced or modified. But it can't be compiled using quickly package --verbose --extras... why, if there doesn't seems to be errors related with my project? The fail happens because python-mkdebian doesn't haves enough parameters to work. • What is the proper way to install the 3.4 kernel?

  Kernel 3.2 has an annoying error for my wireless card (rtl8192se-b) that makes the connection drop and/or prevents the card to make a connection to the wireless router. Dealing with it was very frustrating until I found out the bug was corrected in 3.4. I downloaded: linux-headers-3.4.0-030400_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_all.deb linux-headers-3.4.0-030400_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_all.deb linux-image-3.4.0-030400-generic_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_amd64.deb and installed with: sudo dpkg -i * Now the wireless works fine, but I have two problems that cannot solve. The first one is minor: plymouth would not start at all. But if I boot with the 3.2 kernel it works fine. The second one is serious: sometimes the computer won't shut down or reboot. The X server terminates but the computer shows part of my grub background and will stay there forever using 100% of the CPU. I have a Toshiba Qosmio with an Core i7 and nvidia graphic card (using nvidia-current). During one shutdown, I briefly read a message that said that the virtualbox module couldn't be unloaded from the kernel. I tried to solve this by removing and purging virtualbox and installing it back. I don't see the message anymore, but sometimes the computer won't shutdown nor reboot. Am I missing something to properly configure the new kernels? Thanks!

  Today I got some help from Jaroslav Havlin, the creator of the new "Search in Projects API". Below are the steps to create a search provider that finds recently modified files, via a new tab in the "Find in Projects" dialog: Here's how to get to the above result. Create a new NetBeans module project named "RecentlyModifiedFilesSearch". Then set dependencies on these libraries: Search in Projects API Lookup API Utilities API Dialogs API Datasystems API File System API Nodes API Create and register an implementation of "SearchProvider". This class tells the application the name of the provider and how it can be used. It should be registered via the @ServiceProvider annotation.Methods to implement: Method createPresenter creates a new object that is added to the "Find in Projects" dialog when it is opened. Method isReplaceSupported should return true if this provider support replacing, not only searching. If you want to disable the search provider (e.g., there aren't required external tools available in the OS), return false from isEnabled. Method getTitle returns a string that will be shown in the tab in the "Find in Projects" dialog. It can be localizable. It returns a SearchComposition object, as shown below. Please note that the example uses ComponentUtils.adjustComboForFileName (and similar methods), that modifies a JComboBox component to act as a combo box for selection of file name pattern. These methods were designed to make working with components created in a GUI Builder comfortable. Remember to call fireChange whenever the value of any criteria changes. When something interesting is found, it should be displayed (with SearchResultsDisplayer.addMatchingObject). The displayer can be created by subclassing SearchResultsDisplayer class or simply by using the SearchResultsDisplayer.createDefault. • SSO between multiple Flex applications

  We have three applications developed in Flex and all these use BlazeDS. These applications have their own authentication implementations (Database). Also they will be deployed in tomcat. Deploying all these applications in the same tomcat instance is acceptable for us. We want to bring the authentication credentials of all these applications into a single place and also provide SSO feature between these applications. We also want the authentication module to be configurable. Something like the system administrator can decide if the authentication should be done against a database or LDAP. Say, if the user successfully logs into app1, and when he access app2 in the same browser he should be automatically logged in. Same goes for logout as well. We have been exploring OpenAM, jGuard and JOSSO. I'm not sure if these require lot of customization to work with Flex. I would like to know how people are implementing SSO for Flex applications. Is there a common and simple SSO solution available for Flex based applications ?

• How can I give a basic idea of what I'm working on to a non programmer?

  As a relatively new programmer (1 year professionally, many years as an amateur) I've run into many situations that sent me running to Stack Overflow for answers that failed my meagre experiences. Tonight I received the hardest question ever. My wife asked me: What are you working on? The questions is deceptive in it's simplicity. A straight forward and truthful answer of "I'm working on a c# class module for monitoring database delivery times" is sure incite suggestion of attempts to confuse. My second instinct was to suggest that it couldn't really be explained to a layperson, after very brief consideration I came to the conclusion that this would likely result in a long and sleepless night on the sofa. The end result was a muddled answer along the lines of "something to monitor automatic things to make sure they're delivered on time". The reception was fairly chilly, I had to make many assurances that I was not insulting her ample intelligence. My question is thus, what is the best way to discuss your work as a programmer with your significant other who is not.

• What to choose for a multilingual site with support for Markdown and commenting

  I want to publish articles at a multilingual site. I want to be able to write an article in two languages and have them available on separate URLs: thesite.foo/english-breakfast thesite.com/engelsk-frukost If the users web browser is set to English I'd like to show a small notice at the top of the Swedish version with a link to the English one. The link should have an appropriate rel attribute for a translation (search for hreflang at http://diveintohtml5.org/semantics.html). There should be a way to list all articles belonging to these sets: Swedish only, English only, Swedish versions + English only, English versions + Swedish only. I'd like to publish these as four RSS-feeds. And I would like to have two versions of the main site, one in Swedish (showing Swedish versions + English only) and one in English (showing English versions). I shall be able to write the articles using Markdown, as that is the formatting language I find most convenient. There should be a way for users to comment. And some kind of way for me to protect myself against comment spam. I am leaning towards learning Drupal. I suspect I'll have to code this behavior myself as a module. To be frank I'd rather work with Java. Is Drupal the way to go? Or is there something more suitable for this project?

• 10.10 boots to command line login prompt

  I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a computer that was previously running 10.04 (that worked fine). Now, each time I boot up, it starts up in a command line login prompt. I can login and it stays at the command line (as expected). I can then manually start gdm with sudo start gdm and it works fine. I can also enable compiz (using proprietary nvidia drivers) so I'm reasonably confident that it's not a driver problem (at least not in the sense that the drivers just flat out aren't working). Interestingly, if I leave it at the command prompt without logging in, after about 5 or 10 minutes, gnome starts up on its own. I'm not sure what is causing this. Say I have 11 modules in the application and I would have to develop Dashboards for every role in the organization for whom I are going to develop application. We Decided to use Asp.Net Web Api and return json data from our apis. We are going to include 11 Self hosted web apis projects in our application (one self hosted web api) for every module. All 11 modules are connected to one Sql server 2012 Database. Then once api is ready we would have to create Business Dashboards (Based upon roles in Organization). So Now my web api client is Asp.Net Mvc application.Asp.Net mvc will consume those web apis. Here is the part for whom all explanation is done. How should I manage Security of all 11 self hosted web apis? How should I only authenticated request is coming? If I authenticate user by login and password and then redirect user to appropriate Dashboard designed for the role that user have and load data by consuming web apis. How should I ensure that the request coming for accessing data is authenticated?

• PHP - Making CMS (architecture, etc.)

  I'm in the stage of planning new CMS. Before I used WordPress and other open source CMS for my clients, but I always had to write new modules and even mess with the code in order to do certain things. Which as you understand is not the best thing to do. So I finally decided to make my own CMS to work with, the way I need. But before I start it, I would like to think it trough carefully to ensure that I won't need to rewrite it ground up, just because I forgot to include some feature into architecture or did it wrong. I would like to hear your thoughs and the most important I would like you to suggest me some articles or books on that subject, especially on architecture of such systems. I googled a few good books, but that is not enough. The way I'm planning to do it: PHP5, completely OOP, modules architecture. You make a page and add any modules you need there, but modules are not global, but local to a page so you can make two pages with the same module, but content will be different if you set different "content ID" for these two entities. But it can be set the same, so two pages has the same content of the modules put there. Also I plan to support online storage web service (like amazon S3) for images and files, so I would like to hear your thoughs on it too. Also I have not yet decided how to store language data. I don't want to use DB for that, but I haven't decided yet. Also I think I will support other DB with global DB class and separate DB wrappers for MySQL and other databases. And, well, I would appreciate any other information you can provide for that subject.

• How to make pulseaudio and ubuntu detect the same audio device as alsa driver

  I use Ubuntu 14.04 x64 and I use gnome-shell on my laptop. I have a Bose companion 5 (which is basically a USB sound system) and a HDMI port, both does work perfectly when I just boot with the cable plugin. However, when my laptop go to sleep or get unplugged from those two outputs, if I plug back the device, I end up without any hardware detection (only the built-in speakers) from pulse and gnome-shell sound output selector while if I use alsamixer, the device look up and ready. gstreamer-properties allow me to select and test effectively any device but while alsa recognize any device on the run, pulse is not capable of handling things correctly, my question is then: How can I make pulse detect and use the same hardware as alsa, or how to remove completely and gracefully pulseaudio (meaning volume applet running in gnome shell) I don't mind if the project implies to recompile half gnome shell if it implies those audio outputs work all the time. Pulse does not list my soundcard when I use command pactl list cards while the module plug&play for sound card is loaded in pactl list modules. I really don't know what to do, the behavior seems pretty random.

  The one and only thing prohibiting wide adoption of PinkMatter's amazing Flamingo ribbon bar integration for NetBeans Platform applications (watch the YouTube movie here and follow the tutorial here) is... the amount of real estate taken up by the height of the taskpane: I was Skyping with Bruce Schubert about this and he suggested that a first step might me to remove the application menu. OK, once that had been done there was still a lot of height: But then I configured a bit further and now have this, which is pretty squishy but at least shows there are possibilities: How to get to the above point? Get the PinkMatter Flamingo ribbon bar from java.net (http://java.net/projects/nbribbonbar), which is now the official place where it is found, and then look in the "Flaming Integration" module. There you'll find com.pinkmatter.modules.flamingo.LayerRibbonComponentProvider. Do the following: Comment out "addAppMenu(ribbon);" in "createRibbon()". That's the end of the application menu.
