• Hack Fest at Devoxx

  On November 11th and 12th, Devoxx attendees will get the chance to build a Java embedded application onsite. During the Raspberry Pi & Leap Motion hands-on labs on Monday and Tuesday mornings, you will learn about Raspberry Pi development with Java embedded using Leap Motion and other sensors. The afternoons are hacking time on a project of your choice. You can get your inspiration from existing projects. You can also use their project source code and improve on already developed applications.  The goal is for you to create something fun and innovative in only a couple of days, no matter your experience in embedded systems.  We provide you with equipment like the Raspberry Pi, sensors, and Leap Motion. • Install tmux on Mac OS X

  This is a short run down on how to get tmux running on your Mac OS X system. The same methodology applies when compiling this on Solaris. What is tmux? According to the developer's page, "tmux is a terminal multiplexer: it enables a number of terminals (or windows), each running a separate program, to be created, accessed, and controlled from a single screen. tmux may be detached from a screen and continue running in the background, then later reattached". Why not just use screen? For me, the primary reason I switched to tmux from screen is the much easier configuration syntax that tmux offers. If you've ever struggled with formatting screen's caption or hardstatus line, then you will appreciate the ease with which you can achieve the same results in tmux. Preparing your environment You will need a C compiler installed. I believe that OS X ships by default with GNU make, but if not, then you will need to obtain it or use Xcode. • how to properly Install chromium from zip and make it the default browser

  Since the Chromium PPA is no longer maintained, for those of us preferring to use chromium over chrome, we have two options: Build and Install from Source Download either 'beta' or daily builds (in a zip file) Unfortunately for me, option 1 is overly complicated. I know how to compile most any other applications in Ubuntu but I've never been able to get chromium to build correctly. I am currently using option 2. In Chromium I have the Chromium Updater installed (http://goo.gl/ffAMy). This gives me quick access to the most recent 64bit versions. Once downloaded, I install to /home/myuser/opt/chrome-linux. From this directory I can run the chrome binary. It works perfectly except for the fact that I cannot get it to act as my default browser. I've tried, as root, installing the binary in /opt/chrome-linux/ with a symbolic link to the 'chrome' binary in /usr/bin. Unfortunately, this doesn't work as a non root user. So my question is - How do I properly install a downloaded chromium zip build so tht it's listed as an option for the default browser?

• Testing the load factor in my lab

  I am a system admin in a lab, I have ~90 computers in the lab and I want to check the load factor on them.. meaning, to check how many people are working on the computers hourly.. To see if I need to buy more computers or not. I am looking for a way to build a script to check if a computer is logged on or not.. (0 for log off - 1 for log on) After I will have this data, I know how to build a script to build me the graphs. All the computers are linked via a domain and most of them have windows XP (few windows 7) I'll be happy to get some help. Amihay

• Microsoft WPC 12&ndash;Predictions

  Let me start by saying I have absolutely no inside knowledge, neither through the MVP program or any other means, that is fuelling what I’m about to write. This is entirely conjecture fuelled by speculation and too much Soporro beer at a fantastic Japanese restaurant tonight. Still, I present to you… D’Arcy’s Worldwide Partner Conference 2012 Predictions!!! So what can we expect to be announced at this year’s WPC? Much more than last year I’m hoping! Last year was sort of encouraging the troops to carry on with the Windows 7 messaging even with Windows 8 looming in the distance. It also showed Microsoft’s slant towards Private Cloud in addition to Azure. This year, we’re going to see a shift to a battle cry – Windows 8 is Coming, Windows 8 is Coming! I expect we’re going to hear an RTM date for Windows 8 from Steve Ballmer tomorrow, in addition to dates surrounding Windows Server 2012. We’ll also hear some announcement around Windows Phone 8, but I’m not really sure what – that whole piece is still quite muddy; are we going to actually *see* Windows Phone 8 devices this week? That would be great, but I imagine those types of announcements might be left for Build. Speaking of Build, I’m expecting an announcement on a date for a Build conference this Fall, probably late October. If any announcements are going to be made around Office 15, the schedule isn’t hinting at it. In fact, other than Office 365 there’s not much mention of Office in the conference sessions – either a red herring, or telling that Microsoft has another announcement coming later. The tagline of the conference is “A New Era. Together.” It’s obvious Microsoft is wanting to leverage WPC to rally their partners to carry the Windows 8 banner into the field of battle this fall when it ships. D

• RAID1: can't replace faulty spare (marked again as 'faulty spare' within seconds)

  I got a problem that I cannot solve: Our fileserver runs XUbuntu and 3 RAID1s. One has a problem since monday: it consists of sdb and sdc. sdb was marked as faulty by mdadm for unknown reasons. I used --remove to remove it from the RAID and then to add it by --add. All was fine, re-syncing started but never got above 0% and after a few seconds, sdb was again marked as 'faulty spare' (and therefore the RAID degraded, but clean). So I saved the first 512 byte of the old sdb to a file, bought a new HDD of same size (4TB), shut down the computer and replaced sdb physically, switched the computer back on and wrote the 512 byte back to the new drive to have the same partition info as the old drive (both are the same type, from same company). But the new drive shows the same behaviour as the old: I can add, re-syncing starts and after a few seconds its marked as 'faulty spare'. • Route multiple subdomains on one external ip to multiple internal ips

  i have several subdomains(git.example.org, build.example.org, etc.), i have a router with an external ip and i have several virtual machines on a host computer with internal ips. Now i want to route git.example.org to internal ip 10.0.2.1 and build.example.org to internal ip 10.0.2.2. How can I do this? I setup in the Router that all traffic on port 80 is comming to my host computer with internal ip 10.0.2.3 and installed Squid on that computer. I added the following lines to the squid.conf file: cache_peer 10.0.2.1 parent 80 0 no-query originserver name=server_1 cache_peer_domain server_1 git.example.org cache_peer 10.0.2.2 parent 80 0 no-query originserver name=server_2 cache_peer_domain server_2 build.example.org But this is not working for me. :( Any help appreciated. • Extreme Portability: OpenJDK 7 and GlassFish 3.1.1 on Power Mac G5!

  Occasionally you hear someone grumble about platform support for some portion or combination of the Java product "stack". As you're about to see, this really is not as much of a problem as you might think. Our friend John Yeary was able to pull off a pretty slick feat with his vintage Power Mac G5. In his words: Using a build script sent to me by Kurt Miller, build recommendations from Kelly O'Hair, and the great work of the BSD Port team... I created a new build of OpenJDK 7 for my PPC based system using the Zero VM. The results are fantastic. I can run GlassFish 3.1.1 along with all my enterprise applications. I recently had the opportunity to pick up an old G5 for little money and passed on it. What would I do with it? At the time, I didn't think it would be more than a space-consuming novelty. Turns out...I could have had some fun and a useful piece of hardware at the same time. Maybe it's time to go bargain-hunting again.   I have a client who currently runs a venue and has ticket purchases made available through a third party. The way the site currently works is that there is a standard href in the nav menu to the ticket purchasing site. <a href'http://example.com/events'>Events</a> <a href'http://example.com/about'>About</a> <a href'https://someticketvendor.com/myclient?blah'>Tickets</a> They claim that they want to improve their SEO by appearing to integrate the ticket pages into their site. Having spoken to the ticket vendor, they only offer integration through iframes which is just horrible. I don't really know much about SEO but I'm wondering if I can create an htaccess rule to have http://example.com/tickets forward to href'https://someticketvendor.com/myclient?blah Are they are any negative SEO implications to doing this? Is there a better way this could be done?

• I Can't run the Netbeans but I installed successfully

  I'm new to Ubuntu as well as Netbeans. I installed Netbeans, and I've made sure to install all the JDKs and JREs I could find. It installed without errors. I also saw this question and made sure I followed all the instructions there as well. I never got any error messages of any kind. So far as I know, it installed okay. However, when I try to run Netbeans, I get the message in the bottom of the Netbeans IDE like this: ant -f /root/NetBeansProjects/samp1 -Djsp.includes=/root/NetBeansProjects/samp1/build/web/one.jsp -DforceRedeploy=false -Dclient.urlPart=/one.jsp -Ddirectory.deployment.supported=true -Djavac.jsp.includes=org/apache/jsp/one_jsp.java -Dnb.wait.for.caches=true run /root/NetBeansProjects/samp1/nbproject/build-impl.xml:774: The libs.CopyLibs.classpath property is not set up. This property must point to org-netbeans-modules-java-j2seproject-copylibstask.jar file which is part of NetBeans IDE installation and is usually located at <netbeans_installation>/java<version>/ant/extra folder. Either open the project in the IDE and make sure CopyLibs library exists or setup the property manually. • Twitter Customer Sentiment Analysis

  The breakable toy that I am currently working on is a twitter customer sentiment analyser. It scrapes twitter for tweets relating to a particular organisation, applies a machine learning algorithm to determine if the content of tweet is positive or negative, and generates reports of the sentiment data over time, correlated to dates, events and news feeds. I’m having lots of fun building this, but I would also like to learn if there is a market for quantified sentiment data. So that I can start to show people what I have in mind I have created a mockup of the simplest and most important report. It shows customer sentiment over time, with important events highlighted. As the user moves their mouse to the right (forward in time) the source data area scrolls up to display the tweets from that time. The tweets are colour coded based on sentiment rating. After I started working on this project I discovered that a team of students have already built something similar. It is a lot of fun to enter your employers name and see what it says.

I would now like to understand the basics of how are events are associated with on-screen objects? An explanation of how Events are associated with on Screen Objects: The application registers the Event, the Event Handler and the Component with the GUI Server. When an Event is detected the GUI Server has to link an Event to a Window and then to a Component, it then consults the Event / Component Table to identify which Handler (s) to be executed. I am having problems finding resources/papers that have mention of this process - especially of a Event / Component Table - can anyone clarify?

• Subscribe/Publish Model in Web-based Application (c#) - Best Practices for Event Handlers

  I was recently exposed to a desktop application that uses an publish/subscribe model to handle commands, events, etc. I can't seem to find any good examples of using this in a web application, so I wonder if I am off base in trying to use this for web based development (on the server side)? I'm using asp.net c#. My main question in regards to the design is: When using a publish/subscribe model, is it better to have generic commands/events that pass no parameters and then have the subscribers look at static context objects that contain the data relevant to the event? Or is it better to create custom arguments for every event that contain data related to the event? The whole concept of a global container seems so convenient but at the same time seems to break encapsulation. Any thoughts or best practices from anyone who has implemented this type of model in a web based application? Even suggestions on this model out of the scope of my question are appreciated.

• Why is a software development life-cycle so inefficient?

  Currently the software development lifecycle followed in the IT company I work at is: The "Business" works with a solution manager to build a Business Requirement document The solution manager works with the Program manager to build a Functional Spec The PM works with the engineering lead to develop a release plan and with the engineering team to develop technical specifications If there are any clarifications required, developers contact the PM who contacts the solution manager who contacts the business and all the way back introducing a latency of nearly 24 hours and massive email chains for any clarifications By the time the tech spec is made, nearly 1 month has passed in back and forth Now, 2 weeks go to development while the test writes test cases Code is dropped formally to test, test starts raising bugs. Even if there is 1 root cause for 10 different issues, and its an easily fixed one, developers are not allowed to give fresh code to test for the next 1 week. After 2-3 such drops to test the code is given to the ops team as a "golden drop" ( 2 months passed from the beginning) Ops team will now deploy the code in a staging environment. If it runs stable for a week, it will be promoted to UAT and after 2 weeks of that it will be promoted to prod. If there are any bugs found here, well, applying for a visa requires less paperwork This entire process is followed even if a single SSRS report is to be released. How do other companies process such requirements? I'm wondering why, the business cannot just drop the requirements to developers, developers build and deploy to UAT themselves, expose it to the business who raise functional bugs and after fixing those promote to prod. (even for more complex stuff)

• Re-sizing the form without scaling the GUI

  I am writing a turn based strategy game in C#. My GUI implementation consists of class that extends Form containing a class that extends Panel. When I render the GUI I draw to the paint method in the panel. I am trying to figure out what is the best way for handling form re-size events. I know I want a minimum window size, but I would prefer to not have a maximum or a set size. Ideally the GUI would reveal more/less of the map as the user changes the window size. I would like to avoid scaling the graphics if at all possible. What is the best way to handle re-size events?

• Google analytics - vistor path to specific site destination setup and monitoring?

  I have a website which I am using google analytics to track visitors and track our banner campaigns. We're are promoting 'Purchase Ticket' buttons on our website which push visitors to a third party website who sell and distribute our tickets. The url on all the 'Purchase Ticket' buttons are the same through out the site... Example: http://ticketmaestro.com/events/my-event-2012 In the analytic control panel, is it possible so set something up, where I create a path-to-destination using the above example url? ...and then after this is setup: I want to be able to monitor the path visitors are taking from when they reach the site - to when they click the 'Purchase Ticket' button. • Drupal node access for anonymous users

  I've never used Drupal before so this may be something that can easily be remedied, and that would be awesome. My problem is that a block, containing node information can't be viewed by anonymous users (unregisterd/not logged in), gives a "You are not authorized to access this content." message, but shows up for logged in users. The nodes that the block contains are events, so the block shows events for the next week. I've checked the users access settings but can't find anything that could possibly remedy this. I'm using drupal core 6.26, Event 6.x-2.x-dev, Event views 6.x-2.4 If anyone has any information, or solutions, I'd greatly appreciate it.

The first event was arranged by the local Lorraine JUG while the second one was a largest conference organised by the Ukraine Java User Group. Based on the overall feedback and discussions I had during those two events, it is clear that the WebSocket API (JSR 356) is really a hot topic.
