• Velvet screen after grub selection

  After a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit, the boot seems to stop after selecting the ubuntu option (same with the rescue one) in the grub menu. At first I thought this was related to grub-efi, as I've had similar problems after a Ubuntu 11.04 update which replaced grub-efi with grub-pc and got me stuck on a "elf magic" grub console (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/800910). While the 11.04 problem was resolved with a simple chroot and apt-get install from the live cd, that solution doesn't work this time. The drive with the bootloader is a sata3 ssd with 64 gb gpt (sdb1 20 mb efi boot partition fat16, sdb2 60 gb root ext4 and sdb3 4 gb swap) on a msi e350ia-e45 mainboard with a pair of 2 TB ext4 mbr drives for photos/music/movies. I've tried a few grub-install/update-grub with boot-directory sdb1 from chroot, but I cant seem to go anywhere. Even this guide: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Grub2#EFI (ofc I replaced grub2 with grub in the grub-install and efibootmgr commands) doesnt seem to get me anywhere. Any help or ideas are appeciated ;) edit: I guess its the combination of gpt/uefi that also seems to haunt f16 edit: same with 12.04 beta btw

• Advice and resources on collaborative environments

  I need some advice on collaborative software environments. More specifically, I am looking for books and reference materials that can aid me in understanding team and code structures and the interactions thereof. In other words books, blogs or white papers explaining: Different strategies for structuring teams that share common code between each other but have distinct individual functions? To summarise my question I would like to know what would be a good source of knowledge if I were to set up teams in an organisation that shared code but each unit still remained autonomous. I have done some research on this subject and explored: code review tools, distributed VCS, continuous integration tools, Unit testing automation. The tough part about implementing these tools are to determine where a good place would be to start, which tools are low hanging fruit, which tools or methods provide higher success rates. If someone asks me about code quality reference I point them to Code Complete. I am looking for an equivalent guide on software team structures and tools to make this equation work better. I realise that this question is quite vague but it arose as "we need to share code between teams without breaking each others stuff and causing management headaches and reams of red tape" The answer is definitely not simple and requires changes on many levels, hence the question. If the question is too vague please vote to close or delete. I would accept any good starting point as an answer.

• Is there a way how to customize my keyboard layout in Xubuntu in a graphical way (by clicking)?

  Possible duplicate, but I really couldn't find a solution. I would like to adjust my US keyboard layout, e.g. to add possibility to type some special characters on combination of right Alt + another character, etc. Moreover, my arrow up is dead, so until I buy another keyboard, I'd like to use my right shift as my arrow up, ASAP. However, there seems to be no way how to edit my keyboard layout easily in Xubuntu :( I found no editor and I really don't want to spend years in some configuration files and terminal (not that I can't, but I really really don't want). KLE - the only editor I could find, but no installation guide, no package, no PPA, no idea how to make it working (and uninstallable if not needed one day) Editor in Ubuntu - apparently not present in Xubuntu I found several tutorials how to change the layout, but they all seems to be complicated and not easy to follow. I don't want to spend a weekend in terminal or so, I am looking for an app to launch, make some clicking, finish my work by hitting Save button and - done! Please, is there such solution? For humans?

• What should a programmer's yearly routine be to maximize their technical skills?

  2 years ago I made a big career change into programming. I learned various technologies on my own without any prior experience. I really love it and feel lucky with all the resources around us to help us learn. Books, courses, open-source, etc. There are so many avenues. I'm wondering what a good routine would be to follow to maximize my software development skills. I don't believe just building software is the way, because that leaves no time for learning new concepts or technologies. I'm looking for an answer like this: Take a new concept sabbatical/workshop 2 weeks per year. Read 1 theoretical and 1 practical programming book per year. Learn 1 additional language every 2 years. Take a 1 week vacation every 6 months. Etc. I realize that the above might sound naive and unrealistic as there are so many factors. But I'd like to know the "recipe" that you think is best that will serve as a guide for people.

• I am confused between PHP and ASP.NET to choose as a career in Indian software development context

  I need your help(specially from the software professionals of India). I have completed MCA in 2009. After that instead of joining software company I did a Teaching job nearby by home. In the mean time I prepared myself for public sector jobs(bank). I continued my job for 1 year more and left it in 2010. Now in 2012 ,I feel that I should have done the software jobs,so that I could earn my bread and butter and in the mean time I could have prepared for the job.Because,according to my qualification it will give me the best salary. Now I want to go back in software industries. Now all of them are asking for experiences.And I don't have any.....So which language should I learn? And what should I do,because I have two year gap. Some of my friends suggested me to go with PHP as its easier and quicker to get job in India. But Here the PHP guys are getting less salary as compared to ASP.NET. I am planning to begin with PHP and but is it possible to switch to ASP.NET after two years experience. JAVA: I know upto servlet & JSP. Which is nothing in current market. ASP.NET: I know the basics of asp.net upto database connection ie(Gridview). PHP: Only the basics. So what should I do now. Which is most demanding. Does PHP is good, I feel its more like JSP pages. Oracle VM Server for SPARC enables you to create multiple virtual systems on a single physical system.Each virtual system is called alogical domain and runs its own instance of Oracle Solaris 10 or Oracle Solaris 11. The version of the Oracle Solaris OS software that runs on a guest domain is independent of the Oracle Solaris OS version that runs on the primary domain. So, if you run the Oracle Solaris 10 OS in the primary domain, you can still run the Oracle Solaris 11 OS in a guest domain, and if you run the Oracle Solaris 11 OS in the primary domain, you can still run the Oracle Solaris 10 OS in a guest domain In addition to that starting with the Oracle VM Server for SPARC 2.2 release you can migrate guest domain even if source and target machines have different processor type.   Hello Everyone, I've completed my graduation in Computer Science and currently working as a Software Engineer in a software company. I was wondering if I can build my career in Game Development. If so, what should be my approach. I've a few questions: Which universities to apply for masters? Preferably in Canada. Scholarships available? How shall I prepare myself before applying which shall give me an edge or advantage over others? I know Java, C#, PHP etc. I dont think these languages will be needed in Game Development. In that case, what languages shall I focus on from now? How do I get some ideas about IDE/Engines/Platform of game development? I'm not talking about flash/browser games. Please suggest me anything you want as I don't know much about it so I'm most likely to miss the most important questions. Feel free to make this thread a starter guide for those interested in perusing their career in game development. Post every relevant information. Thanks in Advance.   I've gotten a couple more questions about the installation process for Ops Center. "Can I install on any SPARC / X86 based platform?" Ops Center can run on Oracle Solaris on either architecture, or on Linux. The Certified Systems Matrix lists the supported OSes, and the Linux and Solaris install guides go into more detail about the hardware and OS requirements. "Can we install it on local zones or LDOMS?" Zones, yes; LDOMS, sort of. You can install the Enterprise Controller in a local zone. There are a few caveats, which are explained in the Preparing a Non-Global Zone section. You can also install a Proxy Controller in an Oracle Solaris 11 zone. Agent Controllers, which are the part of the infrastructure that's installed on managed systems, can be put on zones or LDOMS. "Do we need any dedicated network ports from all agent monitoring systems?"  Yes. The port requirements are covered in the Network Port Requirements and Protocols table, which is in the feature reference guide as well as in the install guides.

• Kubuntu 11.10 Lot of Networking problems

  Since I upgrade to 11.10 I have a lot of problems with KDE. First of all there are problems in configuring a static IP address. Just to explain @home I have a normal fiber ADSL and I use a DHCP. When I go to a customer I must insert a static IP address. With ifconfig everything seems ok but there is something wrong in searching DNS names. (I have installed Ubuntu and was going ok again). Now I Have reinstalled again Kubuntu 11.10 and I have the same problem in addition today I have discovered that if I connect to a network in another customer office the desktop freezes and I could only switch between windows with alt+tab. No FN key or right click to open run command works. So i unplugged network (configuration is just DHCP here) and tried on another position in office. It was the same. My Laptop freezes when connected, a fedora 14 of a friend works. So I decided to connect my Galaxy S II as USB network device. Everything is ok for like 3 minutes. When I noticed a little loss of signal again the desktop freezes and i must work (like now) just switching between windows with alt+tab). Additional information: Unplugging network or restarting it via Konsole does not not solve the freezing problem. Every time I must open a console and reboot. Any idea of what tests to do ? Just a recommendation: If I must post here logs or something else please guide me. I use Linux since Ubuntu 9 but I am not an "expert".

• Drupal migration failed

  First of all, I'm new to Drupal and the work I have to do is some kind of too hard. My old colleague (webmaster) had a server with a multisite Drupal 6 installation. Sites and their dirs were (e.g.) Sites Site directory b.a.mycompany.com /drupal_install_dir/sites/b.a.mycompany.com c.a.mycompany.com /drupal_install_dir/sites/c.a.mycompany.com d.a.mycompany.com /drupal_install_dir/sites/d.a.mycompany.com Unluckily my colleague moved and server hdd aren't in my hands: all I have is a backup of /drupal_install_dir and three sql dumps (one for each site). I had to restore three sites, but changing them as z.mycompany.com/b z.mycompany.com/c z.mycompany.com/d Beeing a sysadmin, I Extracted tar.gz backup file under wwwroot (let's call full path to extracted directory /new_install_dir) Restored three databases Created mysql users and give them correct GRANTS on databases Then (trying to restore at least first site) I changed /new_install_dir/sites/settings.php putting correct database connection data and new basepath. But there is no way I can see my new site, simply it doesn't work. Watching /var/log/apache2/error.log I saw Drupal searching for main drupal database; so I created that db too setting user and grants, but dump file is empty. Well, now I can run something like install.php or update.php, but my site is not shown. Is there something I can do? Do I have to walk another way? Consider I searched the web, but I'm not able to find a guide that can help me for my problem. Ah, I forgot: before producing the backup, my colleague set site in maintenance mode. When I try to run z.mycompany.com/?q=user (trying to login) nothing happens. I'm really stuck...

• Enabling GTX 570

  Hello i just built up my new system: Asus Rock Z77 Extreme 4 Intel i7 3770k 16 Gb Corsair Ram Zotac Nvidia GTX 570 bequiet! 630W Power supply 120 GB SSD So after i installed UBUNTU 12.04 64 bit. It ran smoothly. I downloaded and installed all the recommended updates. After checking the Sytem details the GTX 570 didnt show up as graphics unit. so i figured i needed to download the drivers. So i did but being a complete newbie to linux i didnt succeed in installing them. (I think) Anyway after several tries and errors i shut down the PC and restarted it. Resultung in do Signal to my screen after trying to reboot and all the monitor outs with no result i took out the graphic card and now it boots normally but after booting it says there is a problem with the system the graphics cant be recognized something something. So Question A: What do i do? I Like linux but the arbitrarity of the Errors that occur without any changes to the system scare me. Question B: Is there A beginners guide to Ubuntu where i could start from scratch because i really want this to work? Question C: Now that the System is (suddently) showing these graphic errors So far without visible consequence despite the error message. should i reinstall the GPU and give the driver installation another try or the other way around? Ill be very grateful for any help. Thank you in advance!

• Does lesser wide screen fit better than a large one?

  About 3 weeks ago I changed my job. At the former workplace, I had 2 monitors for doing programming (GUI and core programming). Here, at the place where I am, the administrators gave me a laptop (15.6 inch) and wanted to provide me a wider screen additional to the laptop's one. I said that for now I want to test as it is, with the laptop's screen. I also want to mention, that in the current job I'm not targeted for GUI development. My feeling until now (but it can be just a feeling) is that working on this single not so wide screen, I'm not so weary after a full day work as I was with 2 wide monitors. Does anyone have any recommendations on this problem? Does lesser screens (in my case exclusively 15.6 inch vs 20 inch screens) affect your eyes? If anyone have any knowledge about, please feel free to say what's your opinion. P.S. I think that's a good site for this kind of question. Otherwise, please guide me on what site from StackExchange should I put it. Thanks.

• Kloxo - Use third party nameserver

  Here's my case: I got my domain from a registrar. I got my VPS up from a provider who also offers free DNS hosting, on their own server (separately from my VPS, IP:111.111.111.111). So I got these third-party nameservers, lets name them: ns1.provider.com ns2.provider.com and pointed my domain registrar to them. I let it propagate for 24 hours so I believe its ok. (if I ping my domain I get the IP for these nameservers - 111.111.111.111) Afterwards I headed to my providers cPanel (the one they gave me for the DNS hosting service) and changed the default A Record IP from 111.111.111.111 to the IP associated with my VPS (IP:222.222.222.222). The last step, as I see it, is to configure my VPS via Kloxo panel and add the domain. Can someone guide me how can I achieve that? Is it just enough to create a new DNS Template and add as Primary DNS "ns1.provider.com" and Secondary DNS "ns2.provider.com"? Every tutorial I found is using Kloxo to create local nameservers on the same VPS which is something I want to avoid to save resources..

• Audio not working in 12.10

  I did a clean install of 12.10, when I open Sound Settings in gnome the only device in the list is "Dummy Output", and sound is not working. Sound worked fine out of the box in 12.04 I ran alsamixer, it says my card is "HDA Intel", and chip is "Realtek ALC880". The alsamixer playback output was set to mute at first, unmuting did not fix. I checked out the info at http://www.unixmen.com/2012003-howto-resolve-nosound-problem-on-ubuntu/ as suggested on a similar question, I've done everything there except installing the ubuntu audio dev team driver. Should I try install this? • BumbleBee / getting Nvidia 310.19 Drivers to Work | 12.10

  Asus U31JG - A1 Laptop: -Intel Core i3 -Nvidia 415m / Intel HD Graphics ( Optimus Technology ) Hello, I have been trying for about 3 weeks now to get any kind of Nvidia driver to work, and now am determined to get the 310.19 driver to work. I have tried numerous times of which either nothing happened or my interface ( menu bars, the top and left bar on desktop, and the ability to close a window) would disappear. Apparently I'm not making the connection on how to get these to install properly. I have tried numerous other posts and websites and attempted "bumblebee" to no avail. I am wondering if anyone can write a step by step guide of commands that I need to run in terminal to get this to work. I've had to reinstall 12.10, so if you could walk me through the process of getting the drivers downloaded and installed, I would greatly appreciate it. I barely know what I'm doing, and this is quite a turn off for someone new to Ubuntu, I really want to enjoy it but this is preventing me from committing. Thank you in advance, and I apologize for being so flustered / helpless with this but I have ran out of patience with this.

• How to do integrated testing?

  So I have been reading up on a lot of books surrounding testing. But all the books I've read have the same flaws. They will all tell you the definitions of testing. But I have not found a single book that will guide you into integration testing (or pretty much anything higher then unit testing). Is integration testing that elusive or am I reading the wrong books? I'm a hands on person, so I would appreciate it if someone could help me with a simple program: Let's say you need to make some sort of calculation program that calculates something (doesn't matter what) and exports it to *.txt file. Let's assume we use the Model View Controller design principle. And one class for the actual calculating which you'll use in the model and one for writing the textfile. So: View = Controller = Model = CalculationClass, FileClass So for unittesting: You'd test the calculationClass, I'd personally focus most of my unit tests there. And less time on unit testing the view/controller/FileClass. I personally wouldn't see the use of unittesting those unless you want a really robust program. Integration testing: Now this is where I run into a wall. What would I have to test to call it an integration test? I could stub the view and feed the controller data which it would pass on to the model and so forth. And then check what the view gets back in the end. But ... Couldn't I just run the (in this case small) program then and test it manually? Would this be considered a integration test too, or does it have to be automated? Also, can I check multiple items to see if they are correct? I cannot seem to find any book that offers a hands on approach to methods of integration testing.

• PHP hosting some info required [closed]

  I have recently given a control of newly bought hosting space and the domain account. There is a technical team from the hosting site to help out with problems, but that is a long process, i.e. log a ticket, wait for a long time, and I don't get the correct answer in the first shot. I was wondering, if anyone has any helpful guide and how one must go with hosting a site. Any info that must be know w.r.t to cpanel? Any other useful stuff if any one has, or could point me to ? Just to give a few difficulties: The same php code working well on local machine, giving error on remote as "File not found". The file is present indeed as I have ftp'ed all the files correctly. session_start error are outputted to html page with warning "Header already sent". and many more technical things, that work well on local but not on actual hosting server. So, if anyone has any helpful stuff in this reference, as to what all changes are required or what a programmer must be aware from a hosting perspective, please let me know. Note I am hosting a PHP site with mysql db, on a shared environment.

  I stumble upon the search of a good resource to start with OpenGL (3.0 or later) . Well, I found a lot of books but none of them can be considered a good resource! Here two examples: OpenGL Programming Guide (7th edition) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0321552628/khongrou-20 This is FULL of deprecated material! Almost every chapters begin with a note about that. OpenGL Superbible (5th Edition) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0321712617/khongrou-20 This book uses a library created by the author to explain the main arguments, hiding what you want to learn! I don't want to learn how to use your library! I want to learn OpenGL! I hope that you understand this is not the same question like "hey I'm not able to use Google... tell me how to learn OpenGL". I've just finished a full and deep search but I can't find a good and complete resource to learn the "new" OpenGL avoiding deprecated topics. Can someone heading me in the right direction? • UCS Documentation: Home1 or Home2? You Decide.

  How you go about finding information can be a very personal affair. We each have our own style of locating content, we each have our particular bent. But when it comes to getting started finding technical information, sometimes the simplest ways are best, especially if you are relatively new to a product or technology, and you just need to get going quickly with that Installation Guide or those Release Notes. With that in mind, I recently created an alternative home page for the Unified Communications Suite documentation. You can now have your Home2, in addition to the original, more wiki-fied Home1. I would recommend Home2 for those who are used to, and are more comfortable with, the spreadsheet-like view of manuals: here you'll find those familiar titles and the option to either view on the wiki or download the equivalent PDF file. Once you get familiar with what guides are available for the UCS component products, then move on to the Home1 layout, and start using some of the more advanced techniques for finding content in a wiki. Either way, you should be able to locate the "thing" you are looking for.

• Using Git with TFS projects

  If you having been following the updates to CodePlex over the last several months you will have noticed that we added support for Git source control. It is important to the CodePlex team to enable developers to use the source control system that supports their development style whether it is distributed version control or centralized version control. There are many projects on CodePlex that are using TFS centralized version control. But we continue to see more and more developers interested in using Git. Last week Brian Harry announced a new open source project called Git-TF. Git-TF is a client side bridge that enabled developer to use Git locally and push to a remote backed by Team Foundation version control. Git-TF also works great for TFS based projects on CodePlex. You may already be familiar with git-tfs. Git-TFS is a similar client side bridge between Git and TFS. Git-TFS works great if you are on Windows since it depends on the TFS .Net client object model. Git-TF adds the ability to use a Git to TFS bridge on multiple platforms since it is written in Java. You can use it on Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows, etc. Since you are connecting to a TFS Server when using Git-TF make sure you use your CodePlex TFS account name: snd\YOUR_USERNAME_cp along with your password. • Building My First JavaFX Application Using Netbeans 7.1

  Angela Caicedo, Oracle Technology Evangelist for JavaFX, has released a series of videos demonstrating how to build a simple JavaFX application using Netbeans 7.1. This video series is a great introduction to using JavaFX and takes the viewer through easy to follow, step-by-step instructions, including example code and showing the results along the way. These videos are highly recommend to anyone who is new to JavaFX and is looking for a quick getting started guide.  The first video provides an introduction to the the application and shows viewers the end result of the exercises that will be demonstrated throughout the series. The second video (Part 1) demonstrates how to get started creating the application from an empty project to build your first JavaFX application in Netbeans 7.1. Instructions include defining the components, creating and inserting image packages, adding the resources you want to make available in your application, setting the clipping area for you image, and setting the style for your image to create a transparent window. The third video (Part 2) demonstrates how to handle events and binding in the sample application using JavaFX.
