• How to make a bootable USB drive out of a bootable DVD or CD

  Is there a "universal" way of how you can make a bootable USB drive out of a bootable dvd or cd? What makes a USB drive bootable? What makes a dvd and cd bootable? For example there is a program called UNetBootin which can make bootable USB drives, but seems like it only works with various linux distributions. (Tried it with a Win7 image and the SystemRescueCD, which didn't work so well...). Main reason I ask is that I have a Support DVD which came with an Asus EEE, and it of course doesn't have an external dvd drive. So I am curious if I can sort of move that dvd over to a USB drive so that I can use it without buying one. Not asking just specifically about this one case though, I am curious to know a bit more about this in general. So, if you have a general bootable DVD or CD (Or a DVD or CD image for that matter), could be linux distro, windows install disk, support disks, etc., is it possible to "move" it over to a USB drive and make that work like the DVD or CD did? (Being bootable and all).

• jdbc4 CommunicationsException

  I have a machine running a java app talking to a mysql instance running on the same instance. the app uses jdbc4 drivers from mysql. I keep getting com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException at random times. Here is the whole message. Could not open JDBC Connection for transaction; nested exception is com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: The last packet successfully received from the server was25899 milliseconds ago.The last packet sent successfully to the server was 25899 milliseconds ago, which is longer than the server configured value of 'wait_timeout'. You should consider either expiring and/or testing connection validity before use in your application, increasing the server configured values for client timeouts, or using the Connector/J connection property 'autoReconnect=true' to avoid this problem. For mysql, the value of global 'wait_timeout' and 'interactive_timeout' is set to 3600 seconds and 'connect_timeout' is set to 60 secs. the wait timeout value is much higher than the 26 secs(25899 msecs). mentioned in the exception trace. • Windows Server 2008 R2 Virtual Network Setup

  Some background: I'm very much new to networking in general, and virtualization in particular. I'm trying to set up a series of VMs as we are transitioning to a thin client setup. I have been supplied a limited number of static ip addresses. The server is located in an offsite building which houses the network we use to connect to the internet, share folders etc. The setup I've been trying to go for is this: The host OS (Windows Server 2008 R2) is bound to one nic using one of the static ips (say, Nic1 and ip 10.255.6.61). I've set up another external virtual network attached to another physical nic , and a virtual private network attached to no nic. There is one VM running the same os (as the host). This VM is connected to both the external virtual network (and uses another static ip say Nic2 and ip 10.255.6.62) and also to the virtual private network (I gave it a static random ip 192.168.88.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0). This virtual private network is connected to all the other VMs. I'd like to share the internet connection with all the other VMs on the private virtual network, and so I installed the RRAS role on the server connected to Nic2, and selected the option to share the internet over the vpn. I've run through the RRAS wizard a few times, trying different configurations, but none of them seem to be letting the other vms connect to the 'net. The vms seem to connect to the virtual private network fine, they are assigned an ip address and everything, but no internet, and no rest of the network either. The other problem is in general I connect to the vms with RDP. Will that be possible with a setup like this? i.e. will the vms show up as computers on the network? If not, what are my other options? Most of the time it works OK and the restart count is anything up to 4. In this case the Trunk log confirms that the Restart Count is 5 and so is considered to be exceeded. Presumably, this triggers the termination of the other services and Trunk is actually doing its job.So, coould this just be a timing issue and we need to increase the tolerance level (i.e restart count) or do we need to address the 0xa08990002 error in vmd?

• iTunes Home Sharing only works one way between 2 Windows XP PC's on the same LAN

  Both PC's have the latest iTunes installed. PC (A) can "see" that there is a shared library "B library" but attempts to connect to it return this error message: The shared library "{Username}'s Library" is not responding (-3259) Check that any firewall software running on either the shared computer or this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689. however the reverse works fine. e.g. PC (B) can "see" shared library "A library" and can access all content. Notes: Both PC's have Home Sharing enabled (turned off/on several times to verify). Both PC's have Windows Firewall turned on, but in the exceptions tab, iTunes is allowed, and Port 3689 is also added as a firewall exception (just in case) Both iTunes accounts have been "authorized" on both PC's Both PC's connect via LAN via D-Link DIR-615 router. In the advanced application rules, iTunes has also been added to allow traffic on port 3689 un-hindered. Is there any other magical setting/configuration option that I should be aware of and set in order to get this to work? I could care less about sharing apps etc. I just want the music sharing to work. Update: Solved! It turns out on PC (B) there were multiple accounts set up. 1 of the accounts had the checkbox checked under the Windows firewall "On" option which states "No exceptions" thus even though it was added to the exception list on the main user account, this other account was blocking access.

  I have created a software RAID 1 quite some while ago and it always seemed to work for me. However I am not completely sure that I have configured everything right and do not have the experience to check so I would be very grateful for some advice or just verification that all seems right so far. I am using Linux Fedora 20 (32 bit with plans to upgrade to 64bit) The RAID 1 should consist of two 1TB SATA hard drives. Try more general terms in place of specific ones. Try your search in a different scope. Different scopes can have different results. • Windows Small Business System 2003. SQL timeout in Server Performance Report

  I'm the volunteer IT admin at a small school. We have SBS 2003 with about ten desktops. The server performance report is emailed to me daily. It is setup with a wizard in the Monitoring and Performance part of the "Server Management" console. It often fails with a "The page cannot be displayed" error. The event log shows Event Type: Error Event Source: ServerStatusReports Event Category: None Event ID: 1 Date: 1/16/2011 Time: 6:03:14 AM User: N/A Computer: ALPHA Description: Server Status Report: URL: http://localhost/monitoring/perf.aspx?reportMode=1&allHours=1 Error Message: Timeout expired. I also run the WsusDBMaintenance.sql script (from TechNet I think) which reindexes the database etc. Those two things seem to get it working again for a while. Recently the "while" has become a couple of weeks. My searching online has revealed lots of people having this problem but no real solution. Does anyone have any good ideas about this? I have to wonder if something in the WSUS SQL schema is not indexed properly. The time that the server cleanup wizard takes seems ridiculous. Thanks

• ms excel 2010 in windows xp - when open workbook the data is formatted differently than when i saved it

  I haven't been able to find an answer to this. I have multiple files that I use regularly in excel that now have cell formats of "date". Every single cell in the entire workbook (all sheets) is now formatted as "date". The problem is that I lost my formatting for percents, numbers years, etc and now everything is converted to date (xx/xx/xxxx). I am able to open previously saved versions of a file (prior to me having the problem) and the cells are formatted as I intend them to be (percents, numbers, general, as well as dates). Since this has happened on a couple different files recently, I am wondering how this is happening and how do I prevent it from happening in the future. I cannot cure the problem just by highlighting the entire sheet and converting back to general because I lose all my percents and number formatting. • Utilu IE Collection IE6 crashes under Windows 7

  I've installed Utilu IE Collection under Windows 7 64-bit, but am unable to successfully run IE6 (specifically, "Internet Explorer 6.0 (6.00.2900.2180)"). I haven't tried other versions of IE from the package, so their behavior is unknown. It starts up fine, but the address bar isn't shown. (Attempted to post image, but I'm a newbie on SU and it wouldn't let me. Can be found here.) View-Toolbars shows 'Address Bar' already selected. • Fake demostration software for command line

  I'm looking for some software that would be useful for giving demonstrations. I regularly have to show the effects of scrips ect to classes while talking about their effects, and equaly regularly I have finger trouble and have to rewrite various commands - wasting class time and general energy. I'd like to be able to record a sequence of commands in advance, and then play them back at the speed of my choosing. So I might have a file that containes the commands: echo "hello world!" ls ls -l ls -l | sort I'd like to be able to play these commands back by typing similar ones in. So I'd have a blinking command prompt and if I typed 'echo "hxxx' the command prompt would read home$echo "hell and if I typed any other letters the terminal would fill up with the remainder of the command until I press enter, when it executes the command. The point is that even if I screw up the command when typing it, the command that I'd prepared in advance would be executed. My question is - does similar software exist for giving demonstrations? or even, is this an easy thing to script up...? EDIT - two quick things first of all I'm on osx - but it would be nice to get a general solution for other people who arrive here from google. and second a lot of the comments/answers are concentrating on, in effect, making it fast and easy to enter long commands by means of hotkeys and the like. Actually I'd like it to at least look like I'm typing live - that's why I put in the bit about the one-to-one keymapping, but I don't think I explained that quite as well as I could have...

• Walk me through the Linux log files (please)

  Hey all, I just tried loading a 2MB file in gedit and it silently died on me. I was wondering if anything might appear in a log file that might help me diagnose this: I checked syslog and found out it segfaulted. While doing this I realised that I don't really know anything about how logging is organised on *nix machines. All I know at the mo is Logs are typically stored in /var/log/... is there anywhere else that I should know about? I'm familiar with application specific logs, such as apache's. I understand that dmesg is the bootup log, and syslog is a general system log... is that right? So would someone mind taking me through the most useful logs? Are the two logs I mention in the final point the only general logs? And what are the funky numbers at the start of lines in dmesg? Seconds since startup? Please include anything in your answers that you think would improve my understanding here and help me track down anomalies! TIA Andy

• Constant crashes in windows 7 64bit when playing games

  I've tried everything I can possibly think of in trying to fix this problem and I'm totally out of ideas, so any help would be appreciated: The problem: whenever I fire up a game, it works for a short while with no problems and then it would crash. Either its a hard crash, forcing me to reboot, or windows would report that the display driver has stopped working and recovered. Here is a list of things I've already tried: Drivers - tried the latest drivers (catalyst 9.12) as well as the stock drivers that came with the video card. Also have the latest BIOS/chipset Memtest - Ran Memtest86+ overnight, had no problems, the windows diagnostic tool also does not find any problems. Overheating - Video card/cpu temperatures are well below peak (42 and 31 Celsius receptively) PSU Voltage - CPUID shows that the voltage levels are all above what they should be. The PSU itself is only roughly 16 months old and is a good model. HDD - No errors when checked GPU - Brand new (replaced previous card since I thought it was the problem, apparently not) Overclocking - Everything is at stock levels, memory voltage is set to manufacturer's standard Specs: Motherboard: ASUS P5Q Pro CPU: Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0 ghz OS: Windows 7 home premium 64 bit Memory: Mushkin Enhanced 4GB DDR2 GPU: Sapphire HD 5850 1GB PSU: SeaSonic M12 600W ATX12V DirectX: DX11 Event Viewer after a crash always has these logged: A fatal hardware error has occurred. • Google Apps routing to different servers, depending on domain

  We are investigating Google Apps for Education for our group of schools. Currently, each school uses their own Exchange (2003) server. Each school has its own domain which I have added to Google Apps as additional domains. I would like to start transitioning certain staff and some new pupils over to Google Apps to start testing. In this interim phase, I need mail to be routed through Google Apps and then, if no appropriate mail box is found, route on to the individual schools depending on the recipient. I do know that it is possible to route mail that does not have an appropriate Google Apps mail account to a single server - under "Settings / E-mail Settings / General Settings / Routing / E-mail routing". This works well for a single organisation where all the extra mail is destined for one place. I do know that it is possible to set up Routes, under "Settings / E-mail Settings / Hosts" and then use rules, found under "Settigns / E-mail Settings / General Settings / Routing / Receiving Routing". I can then filter based on e-mail domain and forward on to the necessary server. My problem with this, as I understand it, is that it ignores the users that have Google Apps accounts set up and sends all mail to the Exchange server. Are there any solutions for this predicament? • A class meant for an alfresco behavior and its bean, how do they work and how are they deployed trough eclipse

  (This is a partial repost of a question asked 10 days ago because only 1 part was answered(not included), I've rewritten it into a way better question and added 3 more tags) where do I put the DeleteAsset.class or why isn't it being found? I've put the compiled class from the bin of the workspace of eclipse into alfresco-4.2.c/tomcat/webapps/alfresco/WEB-INF/classes/com/openerp/behavior/ and right now it's giving me Error loading class [com.openerp.behavior.DeleteAsset] for bean with name 'deletionBehavior' defined in URL [file:/home/openerp/alfresco-4.2.c/tomcat/shared/classes/alfresco/extension/cust??om-web-context.xml]: problem with class file or dependent class; nested exception is java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/openerp/behavior/DeleteAsset (wrong name: DeleteAsset) when I put it in there. (See bean below!) think I've found the problem. Being a newbie to eclipse I haven't managed the dependecies well I think. • Undefined symbols after installing new xcode 3.2.3 build

  I want to move to the new XCode 3.2.3 GM Seed build for development, but when I bring up my project I get 'base sdk missing' because my project is set to use iPhone SDK 3.0. If I change 'base SDK' to iPhone 3.2 or 4.0 and then compile I get a lot of errors that I don't understand. I dumped a few of them below. Can anyone tell me what I am missing? Also, can someone confirm that if I choose 'base sdk' of iPhone 3.2 or 4.0 that I can still choose 'target device' of iPhone 3.0 and not force my customers to install the new SDK. I really don't want to be the app that forces my customers to upgrade their OS. Thanks!   I'm using JDBC to connect my program to a MySQL database. I already put the port number and yes, my database have permission to access.   I am designing a chat server in java. The communication is Http based and not socket based. In the client side I have an applet. In the server side I have a servlet. Applet: I create a new thread to listen for incoming messages(GET method). The main thread is used to send messages(POST messages). In java console, i get the following output: Creating new thread Inside new thread. inside first while. Inside getNewMessage. Trying to listen to servlet. In the servlet side, i get the following output in the tomcat logs: Inside Doget. inside getNextMessage. AddedObserver. After i type a message in the applet, and send it, I get the foll output in java console: Trying to send msg :you deR?? Message sent! But in servlet side, I dont get anything in the logs. I used the O'Reily Java Servlet Programming as reference(The observer interface comes from there). But I am not getting any chat communication between two clients. As can be understood from the logs, the POST method is not called. Any reason for this?
