• How to make a dropdown list such that... (see details)

  I want to plot the stock prices of certain companies VS the S&P500. I have all the price data downloaded in my excel sheet already. I want to create a line graph in Excel. One line is fixed and that would be the S&P500, and the other would be the company I select. I know how to use data validation to create a dropdown list, but how could I make it in such a way that when I select company A, I would only see company A's price data but not company B, C, etc. Then when I select company B, I would only see company B's price data & the S&P price data. And so on. The S&P line will be visible all the time, but the various company's price line will only appear if it is selected. Is there any easy way to normalize all sets of data in a way such that the starting point is always 100?

• Is virtual machine slower than the underlying physical machine?

  This question is quite general, but most specifically I'm interested in knowing if virtual machine running Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud will be any slower than the same physical machine without any virtualization. How much (1%, 5%, 10%)? Did anyone measure performance difference of web server or db server (virtual VS physical)? If it depends on configuration, let's imagine two quad core processors, 12 GB of memory and a bunch of SSD disks, running 64-bit ubuntu enterprise server. On top of that, just 1 virtual machine allowed to use all resources available.

• New 64 bit linux system has regular processes (ps, grep etc) taking up way too much VIRT mem

  We just moved from a 32-bit machine to a 64-bit machine. We have quickly ran out of memory despite the new boxes have twice as much ram as the old boxes. • Would SSD drives benefit from a non-default allocation unit size?

  The default allocation unit size recommended when formatting a drive in our current set-up is 4096 bytes. I understand the basics of the pros and cons of larger and smaller sizes (performance boost vs. space preservation) but it seems the benefits of a solid state drive (seek times massively lower than hard disks) may create a situation where a much smaller allocation size is not detrimental. Were this the case it would at least partially help to overcome the disadvantage of SSD (massively higher prices per GB). Is there a way to determine the 'cost' of smaller allocation sizes specifically related to seek times? Or are there any studies or articles recommending a change from the default based on this newer tech? (Assume the most average scattering of sizes program files, OS files, data, mp3s, text files, etc.)

• Visual Studio 2010 locking referenced Assembly

  I have a sandbox app that is built from the simple WPF Application template. This sandbox references an assembly that I am also building which contains the definition of a UserControl (WPF). I am instantiating this user control in the sandbox, to test the control's behaviour. The point of all this is to speed up development. This worked fine, but recently the .Vshost.exe paired with the sandbox process won't shut down. This prevents me from recompiling the Controls library, though ironically I can recompile the sandbox application. I can't kill the vshost process with Task Manager... only restarting VS2010 will clear it out. But every time I run the application from VS, the process just hangs there, blocking my workflow. I'm at a loss. Any ideas what could be causing this? Or does someone have any proposed workaround (mega-kill switch, perhaps?)

• Excel DataFlow UML Viewer/Navigator/Visualiser tool/ hint

  Not sure what to call it but, is there a birds eye view tool for excel to show the data flow between excel sheets/cels etc? I have inherited some huge reports and looking at each cell to see where it's data comes from or what sheet/cell dependencies it has is a nightmare. Or even just something with excel that show the dependencies within a sheet of cells to each other etc. Or Any other visualization tool that can show the data flow between cells ( I tried visio but it seemed it is only for making diagrams of data not the data model of excel itself ). Or at least if I am within a cell and see a formula referring to other sheets and cells, is there a quick way to navigate there and back? Like code navigation in VS? Thank you for your help

• How come Core i7 (desktop) dominates Xeon (server)?

  I have been using this performance benchmark results to select what CPUs to use on my web server and to my surprise, looks like Core i7 CPUs dominates the list pushing Xeon CPUs into the bush. Why is this? Why is Intel making the Core i7 perform better than the Xeon. Are Desktop CPUs supposed to perform better than server grade Xeon CPUs? I really don't get this and will like to know what you think or why this is so. Also I am thinking about getting a new web server and thinking between the i7-2600 VS the Xeon E3-1245. The i7-2600 is higher up in the performance benchmark but I am thinking the Xeon E3-1245 is server grade. What do you guys think? Should I go for the i7-2600? Or is the Xeon E3-1245 a server grade CPU for a reason?

• setreg.exe for Windows 7

  I want to use setreg.exe (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa387700(VS.85).aspx) to disable the certificate revocation check. However, it's based on an older version of .NET than what I have. Microsoft says it's shipped with the older .net SDK, and when I download that, try to install, it says something like 'can't install SDK without .net 1.1'. In the article linked it says for newer versions I should use SignTool, but SignTool does not appear to have the function I need . Is it possible to either - a) find a tool that can perform the function I need that doesn't need me to install the older .NET b) get setreg.exe without downloading the SDK or do I need to install the older .NET on my machine? And if the latter is the case, what do I need to do to install an older .NET? Will it overwrite my current .NET? Thanks,

• Is there a difference in page fault rates between CPU bound and I/O bound processes?

  I was thinking, should there be any difference in expectation of the page fault rate on CPU-bound vs I/O bound processes? At first I thought maybe we could, since CPU-bound processes would likely be using more memory accesses per time quantum, so I expect it would move from locality to locality faster. At the same time, the CPU-bound process is probably given a larger working set... but this doesn't affect the fault overhead as it hits a new locality IF this wasn't pre-paged in. Is there actually any real difference in the page fault rates or am I just musing about something nonexistent? And if there is, how would it impact a real-world OS like linux?

• How do I fix font corruption in Google Chrome 9.0.597.44beta in Windows XP?

  I am not sure what is causing this problem, but I think it is related to unicode problems. Google Chrome, seemingly out of nowhere a month ago, stopped rendering unicode characters in certain fonts. IE this ?_? Looks fine in some fonts, but looks like this in others. Renders fine in other browsers. Most recently, I visited the FourSquare website and have complete font corruption. Here is IE vs Chrome Full Size What gives? Has anyone else seen this? How can I fix it?

  Buying a laptop is always hard work and questions about specific models dont age well on forums. A popular dilema (especially with apple macbooks) is whether to spend more for a faster cpu and graphics card but settle for standard ram and hd OR drop down and spend the savings on more ram and a faster harddrive such as a ssd. Im wondering for web development i.e. ide, unit tests, photoshop work and some user testing screen capturing now and again what would provide better performance. ( No games, music production or spielberg standard video editing.) For examples sake the current apple lineup for their 15inch macbookpros. 2.66 cpu i7 4gb ram 5400rpm drive 4gig ram vs 2.4 cpu i5 8gb ram 124gb sdd roughly the same price.

• Google maps later traffic

  Google maps has this feature of showing you how long it will take to get somewhere based on current traffic. But what about history, or asking for a prediction of how long it will take to get somewhere, during rush hour, for example? So, how long will it take to get there on this route if I leave at 5, vs how long it will take if I leave at 3. (A difference of 30 minutes on the road sometimes!) If google maps doesn't provide this service, iis there anywhere that does?

  I want to develop human vs human android chess game and I have bunch of new questions. I would like to have screen where online players are shown(nickname, rating) and when player challenge antoher player and he accpet it game begins. These are my questions: When player install application, does he have to create account/login or does every instance of installed application have some kind of ID so I can recognize it on server side? I want to have also ratings of players saved in my DB so login procedure will probably be necessary. When player connects to server server updates online players list. When he challenge another player and he accept server exchange ip`s(and ports? which port to use?) between players. Then they connect to each other and game begins. What is best practice for connection between server-android and android-android? Probably sockets, right? Is there any library for handling lost connection etc.? Which server do you recommend?

• Entity Framework Code-First to Provide Replacement for ASP.NET Profile Provider

  A while back, I coordinated a project to add support for the SQL Table Profile Provider in ASP.NET 4 Web Applications.  We urged Microsoft to improve ASP.NET’s built-in Profile support so our workaround wouldn’t be necessary. Instead, Microsoft plans to provide a replacement for ASP.NET Profile in a forthcoming release. In response to my feature suggestion on Connect, Microsoft says we should look for something even better using Entity Framework: “When code-first is officially released the final piece of a full replacement of the ASP.NET Profile will have arrived. Once code-first for EF4 is released, developers will have a really easy and very approachable way to create any arbitrary class, and automatically have the .NET Framework create a table to provide storage for that class. Furthermore developer will also have full LINQ-query capabilities against code-first classes. “ The downside is that there won’t be a way to retrofit this Profile replacement to pre- ASP.NET 4 Web applications. At least there’ll still be the MVP workaround code. It looks like it’s time for me to dig into a CTP of EF Code-First to see what’s available.   Scott Guthrie has been blogging about Code-First Development with Entity Framework 4. It’s not clear when the EF Code-First is coming, but my guess is that it’ll be part of the VS 2010/.NET 4 service pack.

Paulo has left excellent comment to earlier article once again proving the point that SQL Server Engine is smart enough to figure out the best plan itself and uses the same for the query. Let us go over his comment as he has posted. “I think IN or EXISTS is the best choice, because there is a little difference between ‘Merge Join’ of query with JOIN (Inner Join) and the others options (Left Semi Join), and JOIN can give more results than IN or EXISTS if the relationship is 1:0..N and not 1:0..1. And if I try use NOT IN and NOT EXISTS the query plan is different from LEFT JOIN too (Left Anti Semi Join vs. Left Outer Join + Filter). • LLBLGen Pro v3.0 with Entity Framework v4.0 (12m video)

  Today I recorded a video in which I illustrate some of the database-first functionality available in LLBLGen Pro v3.0. LLBLGen Pro v3.0 also supports model-first functionality, which I hope to illustrate in an upcoming video. LLBLGen Pro v3.0 is currently in beta and is scheduled to RTM some time in May 2010. It supports the following frameworks out of the box, with more scheduled to follow in the coming year: LLBLGen Pro RTL (our own o/r mapper framework), Linq to Sql, NHibernate and Entity Framework (v1 and v4). The video I linked to below illustrates the creation of an entity model for Entity Framework v4, by reverse engineering the SQL Server 2008 example database 'AdventureWorks'. The following topics (among others) are included in the video: Abbreviation support (example: convert 'Qty' into 'Quantity' during name construction) Flexible, framework specific settings Attribute definitions for various elements (so no requirement for buddy-classes or messing with generated code or templates) Retrieval of relational model data from a database Reverse engineering of tables into entities, automatically placed in groups Auto-creation of inheritance hierarchies Refactoring of entity fields into Value Type Definitions (DDD) Mapping a Typed view onto a stored procedure resultset Creation of a Typed list (definition of a query with a projection) on a set of related entities Validation and correction of found inconsistencies and errors Generating code using one of the pre-defined presets Illustration of the code in vs.net 2010 It also gives a good overview of what it takes with LLBLGen Pro v3.0 to start from a new project, point it to a database, get an entity model, perform tweaks and validation and generate code which is ready to run. • SVN: Working with branches using the same working copy

  We've just moved to SVN from CVS. We have a small team and everyone checks in code on the trunk and we have never ever used branches for development. We each have directories on a remote dev server with the codebase checked out. Each developer works on their own sandbox with an associated URL to pull up the app in a browser (something like the setup here: Trade-offs of local vs remote development workflows for a web development team). I've decided that for my current project, I'll use a branch because it would span multiple releases. I've already cut a branch out, but I am using the same directory as the one originally checked out (i.e. for the trunk). Since it's the same directory (or working copy) for both the branch and the trunk, if for e.g. a bug pops up in the app I switch to the trunk and commit the change there, and then switch back to my branch for my project development. My questions are: Is this a sane way to work with branches? Are there any pitfalls that I need to be aware of? What would be the optimal way to work with branches if separate working copies are out of the question? I haven't had issues yet as I have just started doing this way but all the tutorials/books/blog posts I have seen about branching with SVN imply working with different working copies (or perhaps I haven't come across an explanation of mixed working copies in plain English). I just don't want to be sorry three months down the road when its time to integrate the branch back to the trunk.

• Why do programmers use or recommend Mac OS X?

  I've worked on both Mac and Windows for awhile. However, I'm still having a hard time understanding why programmers enthusiastically choose Mac OS X over Windows and Linux? I know that there are programmers who prefer Windows and Linux, but I'm asking the programmers who would just use Mac OS X and nothing else, because they think Mac OS X is the greatest fit for programmers. Some might argue that Mac OS X got the beautiful UI and is nix based, but Linux can do that. Although Windows is not nix based, you can pretty much develop on any platform or language, except Cocoa/Objective-C. Is it the softwares that offer only on Mac OS X? Does that really worth using Mac? Is it to develop iPhone apps? Is it because you need to buy new Windows every 2 years (less backwards compatible)? I understand why people, who are working in multimedia/entertainment industry, would use Mac OS X; however, I don't have strong merits of Mac OS X over Windows. If you develop daily on Mac and prefer Mac over anything else, can you give me a merit that Mac has over Windows/Linux? Maybe something you can do on Mac that cannot be done in Windows/Linux with the same level of ease? I'm not trying to do another Mac vs. Windows here. I tried to find things that I do on Mac that cannot be done on Windows with the same level of ease, but I couldn't. So, I'm asking for some help.

• ASP.Net Web API in Visual Studio 2010

  Recently for one of my project, it was necessary to create couple of services. In the past I was using WCF, since my Services are going to be utilized through HTTP, I was thinking of ASP.Net web API. So I decided to create a Web API project. Now the real issue is that ASP.Net Web API launched after Visual Studio 2010 and I had to use ASP.Net web API in VS 2010 itself. By default there is no template available for Web API in Visual Studio 2010. Microsoft has made available an update that installs ASP.Net MVC 4 with web API in Visual Studio 2010. You can find the update from the below url. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30683 Though the update denotes ASP.Net MVC 4, this also includes ASP.Net Web API. Download the installation media and start the installer. As usual for any update, you need to agree on terms and conditions. The installation starts straight away, once you clicked the Install button. If everything goes ok, you will see the success message. Now open Visual Studio 2010, you can see ASP.Net MVC 4 Project template is available for you. Now you can create ASP.Net Web API project using Visual Studio 2010. When you create a new ASP.Net MVC 4 project, you can choose the Web API template. Everything is so much easier in Chrome. No drama. If your webpage is built with a frameset or iframes, those frames load their own documents in their own windows.To target the window of a frameset frame or an iframe, use the cd() command, with the frame/iframe's name or ID attribute as the argument.
