• Reasonable Location to Install Web Service on Server

  Firstly, I'm a software developer and not qualified as any kind of system or server expert so I'm looking for advice in order to help me prevent faults on our server. I've written a modular system to carry out certain tasks for us autonomously to prevent us from writing the same old code over and over again. This consists of a Windows Service (.NET), a Web Service (WCF), a shared Class Library, and a Database which will run on a Windows Server 2003. The problem comes, for me, in deployment. Specifically the web service - naturally the local service (and required shared library) are persisted (by default and convention) in the Program Files folder, but storing the web service here just seems absurd to me (even though we'd lock it down to appropriate use only). Should the files be stored some place else all together? Or split them up and store the web service elsewhere?

• MacOS X 10.6 Portable Home Directory sync fails due to FileSync agent crashing

  On one of our cleanly installed MacPro machines running MacOS X 10.6.6 connected to our MacOS X 10.6.6 Server, syncing data using Portable Home Directories fails. It seems to be due to the filesync agent crashing during the home sync. We get -41 and -8026 errors, which we are suspecting are indicating that there is too much data or filesync agent can't read the files. • Why is mcrypt not included in most Linux distributions?

  libmcrypt is a powerful encryption library that is very popular with PHP-based applications. However, most Linux distributions do not include it. This causes problems for many users that need to download and compile it separately. I am guessing that the reason it is not shipped is related to encryption or patent issues. However, the source code for library itself is hosted and available on sourceforge.net I have been searching unsuccessfully for a document of authoritative post that explains the exact issues why this extension is not bundled with mainstream distributions. Can anyone provide a pointer to such material or provide an explanation?

  I have designed an reusable game engine for an project, and their functionality is like this: Is a completely scripted game engine instead of the usual scripting languages as Lua or Python, this uses Runtime-Compiled C++, and an modified version of Cistron (an component-based programming framework).to be compatible with Runtime-Compiled C++ and so on. Using the typical GameObject and Component classes of the Component-based design pattern, is serializable via JSON, BSON or Binary useful for selecting which objects will be loaded the next time. The main problem: We want to use our custom GameObjects and their components properties in our level editor, before used hardcoded functions to access GameObject base class virtual functions from the derived ones, if do you want to modify an property specifically from that class you need inside into the code, this situation happens too with the derived classes of Component class, in little projects there's no problem but for larger projects becomes tedious, lengthy and error-prone. The properties designed to use in the editor they are removed in the game since the save file contains their data and loads it using an simple 'load' function to reduce unnecessary code bloat may will be useful if some GameObject property wants to be hidden instead. In summary, there's a way to implement an reflection(property) system for a level editor based in properties from derived classes? Also we can use C++11 and Boost (restricted only to Wave and PropertyTree)

• How to install rgdal on Ubuntu 12.10?

  I'm strugling to install rgdal library on Ubuntu 12.10. Installation from within R results in error: Error: gdal-config not found The gdal-config script distributed with GDAL could not be found. If you have not installed the GDAL libraries, you can download the source from http://www.gdal.org/ If you have installed the GDAL libraries, then make sure that gdal-config is in your path. Try typing gdal-config at a shell prompt and see if it runs. If not, use: --configure-args='--with-gdal-config=/usr/local/bin/gdal-config' with appropriate values for your installation. • At the Java DEMOgrounds - Oracle Java ME Embedded Enables the “Internet of Things”

  I caught up with Oracle’s Robert Barnes, Senior Director, Java Product Management, who was demonstrating a new product from Oracle’s Java Platform, Micro Edition (Java ME) product portfolio, Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2, a complete client Java runtime optimized for microcontrollers and other resource-constrained devices. Oracle’s Java ME Embedded 3.2 is a Java ME runtime based on CLDC 1.1 (JSR-139) and IMP-NG (JSR-228).“What we are showing here is the Java ME Embedded 3.2 that we announced last week,” explained Barnes. “It’s the start of the 'Internet of Things,’ in which you have very very small devices that are on the edge of the network where the sensors sit. You often have a middle area called a gateway or a concentrator which is fairly middle to higher performance. On the back end you have a very high performance server. What this is showing is Java spanning all the way from the server side right down towards the type of chip that you will get at the sensor side as the network.” Barnes explained that he had two different demos running.The first, called the Solar Panel System Demo, measures the brightness of the light.  “This,” said Barnes, “is a light source demo with a Cortex M3 controlling the motor, on the end of which is a sensor which is measuring the brightness of the lamp. This is recording the data of the brightness of the lamp and as we move the lamp out of the way, we should be able using the server to turn the sensor towards the lamp so the brightness reading will go higher. This sends the message back to the server and we can look at the web server sitting on the PC underneath the desk. We can actually see the data being passed back effectively through a back office type of function within a utility environment.” The second demo, the Smart Grid Response Demo, Barnes explained, “has the same board and processor and is still using Java ME embedded with a different app on top. This is a demand response demo. What we are seeing within the managing environment is that people want to track the pricing signals of the electricity. If it’s particularly expensive at any point in time, they may turn something off. This demo sets the price of the electricity as though this is coming from the back of the server sending pricing signals to my home.” The demo had a lamp and a fan and it was tracking the price of electricity. “If I set the price of the electricity to go over 5 cents, then the device will turn off,” explained Barnes. “I can go into my settings and, in this case, change the price to 50 cents and we can wait a minus and the lamp will go off. When I change the pricing signal so that it is lower, the lamp will come back on. The key point is that the Java software we have running is the same across all the different devices; it’s a way to build applications across multiple devices using the same software. This is important because it fixes peak loading on the network and can stops blackouts.” This demo brought me back to a prior decade when Sun Microsystems first promoted  Jini technology, a version of Java that would put everything on the network and give us the smart home. Your home would be automated to tell you when you were out of milk, when to change your light bulbs, etc. You would have access to the web and the network throughout your home.It’s interesting to see how technology moves over time – from the smart home to the Internet of Things.

  I'm trying to compile php 5.4.7 on mac osx 10.6.8. • Moving from Silverlight 4 Beta to RC - Part 1

  The other day I had finished up my Task-It Webinar, written a few blog posts, and knew the time had come to move from my Silverlight 4 Beta environment up to the latest RC (release candidate) bits that were released last Monday. What disappointed me when I went to the Silverlight 4 Information Page is that it told me what to install, but not what to uninstall first. Uninstalling I'm not entirely sure if I had to uninstall anything, or if installing the new stuff would just work, but in poking around the web I found posts stating that you must uninstall the following items first. Unfortunately I'm going by memory here and have not been able to find my way back to the magic page I found in the myriad of posts that I went through: Microsoft VisualStudio Beta 2 Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Extended (apparently this must be done *before* the next one) Microsoft .NET Framework Client Profile Microsoft Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio 2010 WCF RIA Services Preview for Visual Studio 2010 While I was at it, I removed a bunch of other stuff, like Blend 3, Blend 4, the SDK's associated with them, and a bunch other stuff that was old. Of course, I didn't really want/need to keep any Silverlight 3 stuff around as I am developing Task-It in Silverlight 4. If I need a Silverlight 3 environment at some point I'll set it up in a virtual environment. NOTE: One thing that I did not uninstall is the Microsoft Silverlight 4 Toolkit November 2009. The reason is that they have not released the March version yet, so if you uninstall this, youll end up having to reinstall it. Installing OK, now that I had all of that old stuff off my machine, now it was time to get the new stuff. For this part I liked Tim Heuer's post, A Guide to What has Changed in Silverlight 4 RC better than the Silverlight 4 Information Page. VisualStudio 2010 RC - I installed Ultimate, but you may not need that version. No harm, it's free for now anyway. I downloaded the .exe and the 3 .rar files, then ran the .exe. I then extracted the contents of the ISO (using WinZip) to a new directory, and now had Setup.exe, a bunch of .cab files and some other assorted stuff. I simply ran Setup.exe and chose custom install (only because I wanted to uncheck Visual C++...I don't really have a need for that) Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio 2010 - As mentioned in Tim's blog post, this installs this installs Silverlight developer runtime, SDK, tools, and this installs Silverlight developer runtime, SDK, tools, and WCF RIA Services. WCF RIA Services Toolkit March 2010 - I'm not sure if/when I'll need any of this stuff, but no harm in installing it anyway. Expression Blend 4 beta - Only if you plan to use Blend, which I do. Windows Phone Developer Tools - Only if you are interested in playing with Windows Phone 7 development. Wrap Up Hopefully I got those steps right.   I am trying my hands at GLFW library. I have written a basic program to get OpenGL renderer and vendor string. This means that getting along with everyone else here is very important to me. Hope it helps Hi fellow student, I noticed that you're working on a project, using a library that I'm interested in. Can we setup a time so I can learn about this library from you? This model of interaction works very well for me. However, there is one fellow student, who manages to make my life hell beyond all of this (his name is not important, let's just call him "Sam"). He seems to be always (pardon my crass description) high and completely unwilling to contribute to a constructive, academic conversation. He's a pretty smart guy, but just comes across as (I hate to say something like this about a fellow student, but) an imbecile. He also has ignorant opinions on important topics, some of which pertain to my specialization (AI, NLP, etc), and when I try to explain to him why he's wrong, all he does is insult me and put me in a foul mood. I have tried ignoring him (sitting somewhere else in the lab, headphones, etc), but he seems to like doing this because he approaches me and no amount of "leave me alone" seems to do the trick. Can anyone please suggest to me how to deal with this man in a civil way? Thank you

• Sending UDP/514 data magically appears in syslog without rsyslog running

  I’m using a programming language without a library to log to rsyslog over UDP. I thought I was going to need to write a library but I discovered something weird. If I send data on UDP/514 with the port open on the server then the data appears in the server’s syslog. rsyslogd isn’t running so syslog isn’t doing this. Data doesn’t get formatted into a syslog message so rsyslogd really isn’t doing this (only raw text enters syslog). Linux must see the data coming in on this port and know that it should go into /var/log/messages? If I do the same on another port (e.g. UDP/515) then nothing appears in the log! What is doing this? Some CentOS feature? The kernel?

• HP Officejet 6000 E609n unexpectedly goes offline

  My local library has a number of Windows Vista SP1 PCs connected to two HP Officejet 6000 E609n wireless printers. Each PC can print to either of the two printers and one of the two printers is the default on each PC. This configuration has worked well over the last year w/o any trouble. Recently, the library staff is reporting that sometimes when patrons try to print, they can't. Closer inspection shows that the the default wireless printer is offline. In order to get the printer online again, the printer has to be restarted. In Control Panel Printers applet, under the Printer menu, the "Use Printer Offline" option is grayed out and there's no way to bring the printer back online w/o restarting it. Does anyone know what's going on here?

  for a long time I dream to have a songs lastfm tags in my music library, so I can use them to quickly generate playlists. There used to be a way to do that in amarok 1.4, but it never was stable. Than there is MusicBrainz Picard's lastfm/lastfmplus plugin. It is partially fine, but I cannot manage to make it look ONLY for the lastfm tags and put them into comments/genre/whatever but it always hast to tag everything. And it isn't particularly good with it, especially with small bands, songs without album etc. My music library is rather well organised. Most of the tags are correct. I also have quite some songs without an album. And I don't want it to find the albums for those songs, since it'd mess up my album view. So it must not touch the fields track name, track number, artist and album. All I want is that the most popular lastfm tags get into the genre or comments tag of the mp3, separated by semicolons, commas or whatever. I think I remember a script that did this job, but I cannot find. Does anybody know if there is anything like this? Would it be to hard to write this, for example as Banshee plugin? Thank you

  Limitation One In SharePoint 2010, you can join the primary list to a foreign list and include more than one field from the foreign list. However, the limitation is that the included fields from foreign list have to be the following type: Calculated (treated as plain text) ContentTypeId Counter Currency DateTime Guid Integer Note (one-line only) Number Text The above limitation also explains why you cannot include some types of the fields from the remote list when creating a lookup. Limitation Two When using CAML query to join SharePoint lists, there can be joins to multiple lists, multiple joins to the same list, and chains of joins. However, the limitations are only inner and left outer joins are permitted and the field in the primary list must be a Lookup type field that looks up to the field in the foreign list. Limitation Three The support for writing the JOIN query in CAML is very limited.I have to hand-code the CAML query to join the lists,not fun at all.Although some blogs post mentioned about using LINQ to SharePoint and get the CAML code from there , but I never get it to work.You can check this blog post  for this.Let me know if it works for you. • More than one way to skin an Audit

  I get asked quite a bit about auditing in SQL Server. By "audit", people mean everything from tracking logins to finding out exactly who ran a particular SELECT statement. In the really early versions of SQL Server, we didn't have a great story for very granular audits, so lots of workarounds were suggested. As time progressed, more and more audit capabilities were added to the product, and in typical database platform fashion, as we added a feature we didn't often take the others away. So now, instead of not having an option to audit actions by users, you might face the opposite problem - too many ways to audit! • Troubleshooting VMware on Ubuntu

Even if you have "Grab when cursor enters window" option set, VMware won't grab your pointer when you move mouse into the VMware window. Also, if you use Ctrl-G to capture the pointer, VMware window will release it as soon as you move mouse around a little bit. Quite annoying behavior... Fortunately, there's a simple workaround that can fix things until VMware resolves incompatibilities with the new GTK library. VMware Workstation ships with many standard libraries including libgtk, so the only thing you need to do is to force it to use it's own versions. The simplest way to do that is to add the following line to the end of the /etc/vmware/bootstrap configuration file and restart the Workstation. export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="force" The interface will look slightly odd, because older version of GTK is being used, but at least it will work properly. Note: After upgrading a new Linux kernel, it is necessary to compile the VMware modules, this requires to temporarily comment the export line in /etc/vmware/bootstrap.

• Controlling access to site folders if you cannot user Roles

• Trouble installing Mercurial 1.5 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (without using MacPorts)

  I'm having trouble installing Mercurial 1.5 (build 20100307) from the prebuilt installer on Mac OS X 10.5.8. The installer is halting telling me that I need to install Python 2.6 to continue. I've installed the latest version of Python (2.6.5) twice now but it's not helping. which python is reporting /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin/python, but I can see that I also have 2.3 and 2.5 in /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions directory, which I suspect is being picked up by the installer ahead of the 2.6 install. If possible I'd like to install Mercurial and Python without having to resort to MacPorts, but if that is the only option then so be it :)
