  • removing an ssrs instance from a scale-out deployment

    If you're like me you had at one time connected one of your Reporting Services instances to a report server database that was already in use by another instance.  This allows the instance to show up in the Scale-out Deployment section of the Reporting Services Configuration Manager.  My problem was that the server that got joined to the original server was no longer available as it had been repurposed, and when I clicked Remove Server to remove it from my scale-out it would fail because it couldn't contact the server.  After searching for a solution for quite some time I decided to look around in the report server database tables, and voila!  All I had to do was remove the old server from the Keys table.  I can't guarantee there won't be any side effects to this method, but it worked like a charm for me.

  • Trouble with a query

    Hi there, I'm having trouble with a query in SQL Server 2008 on some forex trading data. I have a trades table and an orders table. A trade needs to comprise of 2 or more orders. DDL schema and sample data below. What I want to do is write a query that shows the profit/loss in pips for each trade. A pip is 1/1000th of a currency. So the difference between USD 1.3441 and 1.3442 is 1 pip in forex-speak. A trade usually has one entry order and multiple exit orders. So for example if I buy 3 lots of the currency pair GBP/USD at the exchange rate of 1.6100 and then sell 1 lot at 1.6150, 1 lot at 1.6200 and 1 lot at 1.6250 then the profit is (1.6150 - 1.6100) + (1.6200 - 1.6100) + (1.6250 - 1.6100), or 50 + 100 + 150 = 300 pips profit. The trade could also go the other way (Shorting). For example the currency pair can be sold first before it's bought back later at a cheaper price. I would like a query that returns the following: tradeId, currencyPair, profitInPips It seems like a pretty straightforward query, but it's eluding me right now.   • LNK2005: delete already defined error in VC++

    Hi, I am newbie to VC++, so please forgive me if this is stupid. I have got 7 solutions under one project. Six of these build static libraries which is linked inside 7th to produce an exe. The runtime configuration of all the projects is MultiThreaded Debug. sln which is used to produce exe is using MFC other slns use standard runtiem library. I tried changing those to MFC, but still I am getting the same error. All the six slns build successfully. When I try to build exe - get the follwoing error: nafxcwd.lib(afxmem.obj) : error LNK2005: "void __cdecl operator delete(void *,int,char const *,int)" (??3@YAXPAXHPBDH@Z) already defined in tara_common.lib(fileStream.obj) This is weird because tara_common is one of the libs that I generated and fileStream.cpp is file that is just using delete on a pointer. I built it in verbose mod, so I am attaching the output.   • Applying Interactive Sorting to Multiple Columns in Reporting Services

    A nice feature that appeared first in SQL Server 2008 is the ability to allow the user to click a column header to sort that column. It defaults to an ascending sort first, but you can click the column again to switch to a descending sort. You can learn more about interactive sorts in general at the Adding Interactive Sort to a Data Region in Books Online. Not mentioned in the article is how to apply interactive sorting to multiple columns, hence the reason for this post! Let’s say that I have a simple table like this: To enable interactive sorting, I open the Text Box properties for each of the column headers – the ones in the top row. Here’s an example of how I set up basic interactive sorting: Now when I preview the report, I see icons appear in each text box on the header row to indicate that interactive sorting is enabled. The initial sort order that displays when you preview the report depends on how you design the report. In this case, the report sorts by Sales Territory Group first, and then by Calendar Year. Interactive sorting overrides the report design. So let’s say that I want to sort first by Calendar Year, and then by Sales Territory Group. To do this, I click the arrow to the right of Calendar Year, and then, while pressing the Shift key, I click the arrow to the right of Sales Territory Group twice (once for ascending order and then a second time for descending order). Now my report looks like this: This technique only seems to work when you have a minimum of three columns configured with interactive sorting. If I remove the property from one of the columns in the above example, and try to use the interactive sorting on the remaining two columns, I can sort only the first column. The sort on the second column gets ignored. I don’t know if that’s by design or a bug, but I do know that’s what I’m experiencing when I try it out!

  • How can I extend this SQL query to find the k nearest neighbors?

    I have a database full of two-dimensional data - points on a map. Each record has a field of the geometry type. What I need to be able to do is pass a point to a stored procedure which returns the k nearest points (k would also be passed to the sproc, but that's easy). I've found a query at http://blogs.msdn.com/isaac/archive/2008/10/23/nearest-neighbors.aspx which gets the single nearest neighbour, but I can't figure how to extend it to find the k nearest neighbours. This is the current query - T is the table, g is the geometry field, @x is the point to search around, Numbers is a table with integers 1 to n: DECLARE @start FLOAT = 1000; WITH NearestPoints AS ( SELECT TOP(1) WITH TIES *, T.g.STDistance(@x) AS dist FROM Numbers JOIN T WITH(INDEX(spatial_index)) ON T.g.STDistance(@x) < @start*POWER(2,Numbers.n) ORDER BY n ) SELECT TOP(1) * FROM NearestPoints ORDER BY n, dist The inner query selects the nearest non-empty region and the outer query then selects the top result from that region; the outer query can easily be changed to (e.g.) SELECT TOP(20), but if the nearest region only contains one result, you're stuck with that. I figure I probably need to recursively search for the first region containing k records, but without using a table variable (which would cause maintenance problems as you have to create the table structure and it's liable to change - there're lots of fields), I can't see how.

I select File | Export Template | name it TestAppTemplate and save it. I create a new silverlight app based on the above template. The MainPage.xaml has the exact same XAML as above. I press F5 and see a blank screen in my browser. I look at the HTML source of both of these and they are identical. Everything I have compared in both projects is identical. What do I have to do so that a Silverlight application which is created from my exported template does not show a blank screen? (creating a WPF application from an exported template like this works fine)

  • SSRS 2008 printing single page renders different for print

    I have a problem with SSRS 2008 reports rendering differently on the reporting server than the way it renders when you print the report. I’m trying to figure out to print a single page and have the print show that same records as I see on the report on the screen. As a test, I created a simple report with no headers or footers and just added a Tablix table to display the records (no groupings). My data set for this test displays 2 ¼ pages of records when I deploy it to our reporting services server and run it. If I click the print Icon and preview the report is 2 ¾ pages. I haven’t found anything searching on this so it makes me think it is something simple I’m missing. A basically want the report to render the same records on each page in Report Manager as it does when it prints, how do I accomplish this? (In response to answer posted by Chris)…If that is the case then it is disappointing. Customers are accustomed to WYSIWYG and will have a hard time understanding that, I imagine we will be getting a lot of support calls. This still leaves an issue. I tried using print preview and could not find any way to single out a page. If I select a page up front to print, or preview it renders different so I get different records. And if I preview the entire document, I can only print the entire document. You mentioned the Excel render; we have customers that will want that also. The problem I have found with Excel exports is that even a basic report winds up merging some cells and that messes up sorting. I’m going to try your tip about grouping to see if I can get a clean export to a page. It would have been nice if they would have created a property for certain controls like the tablix table called “ExcelSheet”. Then all you would have to do is give it a name and it would create a new sheet for each control with a name, the name becoming the sheet title. Thanks for the information you supplied it is very useful as I’m new to SSRS. If you know how I can Preview in print render and select individual pages to print from the render let me know. Update 02/19/2010 After testing this more I now realize it is just a bad design of Report managers print driver or a limitation because it is server based. The options work differently than Windows apps drivers, But I did find a work around. Here is the test I performed comparing Excel to Report Manager. I bring up a report that will render more than 1 page when printed. I then export to Excel, in Excel I select print preview. I can navigate the pages in preview and then select a single page like page 3. I can then print just page 3 without leaving print preview and it prints just like it rendered. I cannot do this using print in report manager. If I select print preview in report manager then try to print while in preview it always prints the entire document. However if I close out of print preview, I can then select page 3 and print it as rendered. It is just one additional step once you know what to do, but it took some time to figure it out.

    I've got about 100 million rows that I'm moving in SSIS 2008 via a Data Flow Task. It's pretty much a straight table data copy using a Multicast. My question is this: Using the OLE DB Destination Editor I have two options: Rows per batch and Maximum insert commit size. What are good settings for this? I've only been able to find that you are recommended to set Maximum insert commit size to 2147483647 instead of 0, but then tweak both these settings based on testing. I'm curious to find out if anyone has discovered anything useful in their own management of these values.

    Hi, I am creating a project using Entity Frameworks 4 and self tracking entities. I want to be able to either get the data from a sql server 2008 database or from sql server compact database (with the switch being in the config file). I am using the repository pattern and I will have the self tracking entities sitting in a separate assembly. Do I need two edmx files? If so, how do I generate only one set of STE's in the separate assembly? Also do I need to generate two context classes as well? I am unsure of the plumbing for all this. Can anyone help? Darren I forgot to add that the two databases will be identical and that the compact version is for offline usage.

    I am trying to import a KPI from Analysis Services into a PerformancePoint Scorecard, and when I do, The Dashboard Designer throws an error: An unknown error has occurred. If the problem persists contact an administrator. There may be additional information in the server application event log. I am using SQL Server Express 2008 at home, and I've been working on an ASP.NET MVC app that stores my DB in an mdf file in the project's folder. The problem is that the SQL Server in the Uni labs is SQL Server 2005, and when I try to open the mdf file with the VS Server Explorer,It says that the version of the mdf file is more than the server can accept. The only option that comes to my mind is exporting the DB as an sql file, just like I've done it thousand times with phpmyadmin. the thing is that the SQL Management Studio Express is not the most usable tool in the world, and for some strange reason all the articles I could find in Google were irrelevant. Please, help.

    How are you supposed to unit test a web service in C# with Visual Studio 2008? When I generate a unit test it adds an actual reference to the web service class instead of a web reference.     Doesn't produce a app.config . In my team there is a guy who has Visual Studio 2008, he created a webservice. Then there is me, adding this webservice to a console project. Adding the service reference goes without problems but no valid app.config is generated. It's just empty <configuration> </configuration> When I disable 'reuse types' in my service reference it works but then I get an ambiguous error. Is this a bug? I found http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2159107/visual-studio-does-not-generate-app-config-content-when-add-service-reference this one, but there is no solution there, so I thought I bump the problem up again. I've done so via <ConfigurationToBuild Include="Debug|Mixed Platforms"> <FlavorToBuild>Debug</FlavorToBuild> <PlatformToBuild>Mixed Platforms</PlatformToBuild> </ConfigurationToBuild> Problem though, the asp.net assets(eg. script folders, imgs, etc.) are not copied to the deployment folder. Folder(_PublishedWebsites) only contains the binaries references of the app plus the pre-compiled web services. Is there a way to include said folders/files to the deployment folder? Thanks

    We are looking to turn an internal tool we have developed into a Visual Studio Package that we would sell to other developers. The tool will impact the custom editor and/or custom languages. Visual Studio 2010 has redesigned the API's heavily to simplify much of the work involved for these types of integration but the key question we have is: What is the typical adoption pace of new Visual Studio versions? Is there any information out there on adoption rates based on history? How many shops are still using 2005? This will help us to consider whether to target just 2010 using the new APIs or whether trying to go back and support 2008 (maybe 2005) and testing it forward.

    I know that many people have had this problem... but I am now having it and cannot solve the issue. VS 2008 is randomly giving me an error after working on a project for weeks. When I set a debug point, I get a warning: The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document. I have re-built the solution with no debug points and re-tried.     Did anyone get that to work? I mean, unit testing .Net CF apps on Windows Mobile 6.5.3 in Visual Studio 2008. It works great for a WM 6 Pro target, but not for a WM 6.5.3 target. I get this error: The test adapter ('Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.TestTypes.Unit.UnitTestAdapter, Microsoft.VisualStudio.QualityTools.Tips.UnitTest.Adapter, Version=9.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a') required to execute this test could not be loaded. Check that the test adapter is installed properly. Not enough storage is available to process this command. Yes, I can read the error text, but I don't understand the failed run. Any clues?

  • Setting data source for reports in Crystal Reports 2008 Java (performance)

    Hi, we have Crystal Reports 2008 on the server, and use the Java SDK to display reports and convert them to PDF. Since the server hat its own database, we have to set the data source on the DatabaseController to make CR connect to this database. We do it like specified in the docs, and tried the functions in CRJavaHelper, but for a reason unknown to me setting the connection string takes 300ms to 1500ms. What is the fastest way to tell Crystal which datasource to use in its reports? I already saw a JNDI name somewhere, but i don't believe CR actually does a JNDI lookup to find an existing datasource, doesn't it?
