• SQL SERVER – Relationship with Parallelism with Locks and Query Wait – Question for You

  Today, I have one very simple question based on following image. A full disclaimer is that I have no idea why it is like that. I tried to reach out to few of my friends who know a lot about SQL Server but no one has any answer. Here is the question: If you go to server properties and click on Advanced you will see the following screen. Under the Parallelism section if you noticed there are four options: Cost Threshold for Parallelism Locks Max Degree of Parallelism Query Wait I can clearly understand why Cost Threshold for Parallelism and Max Degree of Parallelism belongs to Parallelism but I am not sure why we have two other options Locks and Query Wait belongs to Parallelism section. I can see that the options are ordered alphabetically but I do not understand the reason for locks and query wait to list under Parallelism. Here is the question for you – Why Locks and Query Wait options are listed under Parallelism section in SQL Server Advanced Properties? Please leave a comment with your explanation. • SQL SERVER – How to Change Compatibility of Database to SQL Server 2014

  Yesterday I wrote about how we can install SQL Server 2014. Right after the blog post was live, I received a question from the developer that he has installed SQL Server 2014 and attached a database file from previous version of SQL Server. Right after attaching database, he was not able to work with the latest features of Cardinality Estimation. As soon as he sent me email I realize what has happened exactly. When he attached database, the database compatibility was set to still of the earlier version of SQL Server. To use most of the latest features of SQL Server 2014, one has to change the compatibility level of the database to the latest version (i.e. 120). Here are two different ways how we can change the compatibility of database to SQL Server 2014′s version. 1) Using Management Studio For this method first to go database and right click over it. Now select properties. On this screen user can change the compatibility level to 120. 2) Using T-SQL Script. You can execute following script and change the compatibility settings to 120. • Adding SSE support in Java EE 8

  SSE (Server-Sent Event) is a standard mechanism used to push, over HTTP, server notifications to clients.  SSE is often compared to WebSocket as they are both supported in HTML 5 and they both provide the server a way to push information to their clients but they are different too! See here for some of the pros and cons of using one or the other. For REST application, SSE can be quite complementary as it offers an effective solution for a one-way publish-subscribe model, i.e. a REST client can 'subscribe' and get SSE based notifications from a REST endpoint. As a matter of fact, Jersey (JAX-RS Reference Implementation) already support SSE since quite some time (see the Jersey documentation for more details). There might also be some cases where one might want to use SSE directly from the Servlet API. Sending SSE notifications using the Servlet API is relatively straight forward. To give you an idea, check here for 2 SSE examples based on the Servlet 3.1 API.  We are thinking about adding SSE support in Java EE 8 but the question is where as there are several options, in the platform, where SSE could potentially be supported: the Servlet API the WebSocket API JAX-RS or even having a dedicated SSE API, and thus a dedicated JSR too! Santiago Pericas-Geertsen (JAX-RS Co-Spec Lead) conducted an initial investigation around that question. You can find the arguments for the different options and Santiago's findings here. So at this stage JAX-RS seems to be a good choice to support SSE in Java EE. This will obviously be discussed in the respective JCP Expert Groups but what is your opinion on this question?

  5 years ago I wrote script SQL SERVER – 2005 – List All The Column With Specific Data Types, when I read it again, it is very much relevant and I liked it. This is one of the script which every developer would like to keep it handy. I have upgraded the script bit more. I have included few additional information which I believe I should have added from the beginning. It is difficult to visualize the final script when we are writing it first time. I use every script which I write on this blog, the matter of the fact, I write only those scripts here which I was using at that time. It is quite possible that as time passes by my needs are changing and I change my script. Here is the updated script of this subject. If there are any user data types, it will list the same as well. • Robots.txt practices with .htaccess redirections (inherits)

  I have a question regarding how to write robots.txt files for many domains and subdomains with redirects in place. We have a hosting account that enacts primary and add-on domains. All of our domains and subdomains, including the primary domain, is redirected via htaccess 301s to their own subdirectories in the primary domain's root directory. I'm confused about how I would write the robots.txt for certain directories. First, I wanted to confirm I am right in understanding that for domains and subdomains, crawlers will look to the directory that acts as that urls root directory for the crawling rules(robots.txt). Also, that a directory will not be affected by a robots.txt present in their parent directory if the directory has its own domain/subdomain, and that url is the one being accessed by crawlers. (Am pretty sure, but I wanted to confirm I didnt have a fundamentally flawed understanding of robots.txt) In the original root directory on the account(where the primary domain was directed before htaccess was put in place) what should the robots.txt contain? When crawlers look to crawl our primary domain, will they look to the original root directory for the robots.txt or will they reference the file contained in the new subdirectory where all the primary domain's site files are located? If so, what should the root's robot.txt include if anything at all. Would I be right to include a simple 'disallow: /' for all agents, and then include more specific robots.txt files in each subdirectory with more specific instructions. Would that affect the crawling of the directory where the primary domain is now redirected? Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks!

• Implement service layer in MVC

  We have a defined service layer hosted in WCF. We are now building a website that will need to use the services functionality. The website is being written in ASP.NET MVC 4 and I'm trying to decide how to reference the WCF service from the MVC app. It's a large complex website and it will be changing on a weekly basis. My first reaction is to abstract out the service references (About 7 services on this one WCF host) and create a service ref facade library with which the website interacts. But, I don't know exactly how to use the service facade in MVC. I'm starting to think the Models will be responsible for it because when the controller gets a model, that model should call the service (if needed) and return what the controller asked. I'm trying to avoid having the MVC app know details of the service references. So, I could have a model factory that creates whatever model the controllers need and they can use the service facade to accomplish it. Is this a good plan, or am I off track?

• Why should I use Zend_Application?

  I've been working on a Zend Framework application which currently does a bunch of things through Zend Application and a few resource plugins written for it. However, looking at this codebase now, it seems to me that using Zend_Application just makes things more complicated; and a plain, more "traditional" bootstrap file would do a better job of being transparent. This is even more the case because the individual components of Zend -- Zend_Controller, Zend_Navigation, etc. -- don't reference Zend_Application at all. Therefore they do things like "Well just call setRoute and be on your way," and the user is left scratching their head as to how to implement that in terms of the application.ini configuration file. This is not to say that one can't figure out what's going on by doing spelunking through the ZF source code. My problem with that approach is that it's to easy to depend on something that's an implementation detail, rather than a contract, and that all it seems to do is add an extra layer of indirection that one must wade through to understand an application. I look at pre ZF 1.8 example code, before Zend_Application existed, and everywhere I see plain bootstrap files that setup the MVC framework and get on their way. The code is clear and easy to understand, even if it is a bit repetitive. I like the DRY concept that Application gets you, but particularly when I'm assuming first people looking at the app's code aren't really familiar with Zend at all, I'm considering blowing away any dependence I have on Zend_Application and returning to a traditional bootstrap file. Now, my concern here is that I don't have much experience doing this, and I don't want to get rid of Zend_Application if it does something particularly important of which I am unaware, or something of that nature. Is there a really good reason I should keep it around?

• ASP.NET MVC 2 Hosting :: MVC2 deploy - Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.MVC, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies.

  A new MVC 2 project worked on my local machine but when it was deployed to the test server it gave the error 'Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Mvc, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies.' I have the full Visual Studio 2010 installed on my local machine but just the .NET 4 framework installed on the test servers. It seems the MVC assemblies do not come with .NET 4 framework itself so how to make MVC 2 work on the test servers? When I installed Visual Studio 2010 on my local machine it came with all the fruit included (.NET4 framework, MVC2 etc) so the System.Web.Mvc.dll can be found in my machine's GAC (C:\Windows\assembly). However, since there is no need to bloat the web servers only the plain old .NET4 framework has been installed on the test servers. This does NOT include the MVC assembly and that is why it cannot be found by the web application. You need this assembly to be on your web servers that you are deploying to but you want to avoid having to copy them into the GAC manually and doing all that gacutil mess or maybe you don't have access to your servers if they are hosted by provider. Solution You need to make the System.Web.Mvc assembly bin deployable... okay that doesn't sound easy but here is how to do it for the necessary MVC references: Simply right click the reference and select 'Properties' Then change 'Copy Local' to 'True': Note If your server has .NET 3.5 sp1 installed the new(ish) assemblies System.Web.Routing and System.Web.Abstractions will already be in the GAC. If you had previously deployed an MVC 1 application to a .NET 3.5 server you may remember having to deploy the other two assemblies too. Since MVC2 requires at least .NET 3.5 sp1 you will not need to worry about these assemblies, just System.Web.Mvc

• Detect two specific objects collision with bullet physics

  I have got some problem with defining collision between objects in my game using bullet physics. I know that objects are colliding with each other simultaneously and I don't have to do anything more. However I need to be noticed when one object collides with one of the rest. It is quite awkward written so I will tell what I want to achive. I have got ball which hits wall from tubes. Everything is on the floor. When ball hits wall some fragments fall down to infinity. So I have got bellow floor btStaticPlaneShape. This is place where most of objects is stoping and then I can start another action. But not all of them. So I've been trying to use function checkCollideWith but it isn't good method as it was said in reference and wiki. So I've checked method described in wiki http://bulletphysics.org/mediawiki-1.5.8/index.php/Collision_Callbacks_and_Triggers called contact information. This isn't good method either because it is extremly hard to identify what is what when colliding. You have to also remember that ball is almost all the time colliding with something - floor, wall or eart level. So is there any other method to check what is colliding with what?

• Decal implementation

  I had issues finding information about decals, so maybe this question will help others. The implementation is for a forward renderer. Could somebody confirm if i got decal implementation right? You define a cube of any dimension that'll define the projection volume in common space. You check for triangle intersection with the defined cube to recieve triangles that the projection will affect. You clip these triangles and save them. You then use matrix tricks to calculate UV coordinates for the saved triangles that'll reference the texture you're projecting. To do this you take the vectors representing height, width and depth of the cube in common space, so that f.e. the bottom left corner is the origin. You put that in a matrix as the i, j, k unit vectors, set the translation for the cube, then you inverse this matrix. You multiply the vertices of the saved triangles by this matrix, that way you get their coordinates inside of a 0 to 1 size cube that you use as the UV coordinates. This way you have the original triangles you're projecting onto and you have UV coordinates for them (the UV coordinates are referencing the texture you're projecting). Then you rerender the saved triangles onto the scene and they overwrite the area of projection with the projected image. Now the questions that i couldn't find answers for. Is the last point right? I've never done software clipping, but it seems error prone enough, due to limited precision, that the'll be some z fighting occuring for the projected texture. Also is the way of getting UV coordinates correct?

  When attempting to run the BizTalk Server Pipeline Component Wizard for the first time I encountered an error that prevented the creation of the pipeline component project: System.ArgumentException : Value does not fall withing the expected range  I found the solution for this error in a couple of places, first a reference to the issue on the Codeplex Project and then a fuller description on a blog referring to the BizTalk 2006 implementation.   I have an Asus Sabertooth X79. I often get corrupted files. I checked the RAM, but memtest finds no errors. To avoid the possibility of disk errors, I tried copying the files to tmpfs. If I copy from the network, I get md5sum mismatches about once every 10 times using a 6Gb file. Copying from RAM to RAM, I didn't get mismatches. I get a very high number of errors in ifconfig (compared to others PCs I just took as reference, which have 0 with much more traffic). Here is an example RX packets:13972848 errors:200 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:101 The motherboard is new, but do you think there're some problems with it? What could I use to test the (integrated) network adapter? What else do you think I should double check? --edit-- I tried another NIC, it gives a lot of Corrupted MAC on Input. Disconnecting: Packet corrupt lost connection. I noticed that another PC downloads at 11.1MB/s without problems. This pc at 66.0 MB/s. Is there any way to try to limit the speed?

• How to get tilemap transparency color working with TiledLib's Demo implementation?

  So the problem I'm having is that when using Nick Gravelyn's tiledlib pipeline for reading and drawing tmx maps in XNA, the transparency color I set in Tiled's editor will work in the editor, but when I draw it the color that's supposed to become transparent still draws. The closest things to a solution that I've found are - 1) Change my sprite batch's BlendState to NonPremultiplied (found this in a buried Tweet). 2) Get the pixels that are supposed to be transparent at some point then Set them all to transparent. Solution 1 didn't work for me, and solution 2 seems hacky and not a very good way to approach this particular problem, especially since it looks like the custom pipeline processor reads in the transparent color and sets it to the color key for transparency according to the code, just something is going wrong somewhere. At least that's what it looks like the code is doing. • Compiling NETGEAR WNR2000v3 firmware under 12.04.1 LTS

  I'm trying to compile the GPL NETGEAR firmware for the WNR2000v3 router using Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. I've downloaded and extracted the source, installed everything I think I need, yet there are two build dependencies that I cannot resolve: > make menuconfig .... Build dependency: Please install ncurses. (Missing libncurses.so or ncurses.h) Build dependency: Please install zlib. (Missing libz.so or zlib.h) I've tried apt-getting all of the following packages: libncurses5 libncurses5:i386 libncurses5-dev zlib1g zlib1g-dev zlib1g-dbg The missing libs seem 'real': the target .so files aren't in /usr/lib, although the .h files are in /usr/include. EDIT: some Googling told me of broken or missing symlinks. I found the following: /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libncurses.so.5 -> libncurses.so.5.9 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libncurses.so.5.9 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libncursesw.so.5 -> libncursesw.so.5.9 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libncursesw.so.5.9 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libz.so.1 -> libz.so.1.2.3.4 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libz.so.1.2.3.4 so I tried to symlink these to /usr/lib: /usr/lib/libncurses.so -> /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libncurses.so.5 /usr/lib/libz.so -> /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libz.so.1 but the project still complains about missing libncurses and zlib. EDIT: I was able to get the dependencies to work under 8.04. Need to cross-reference things now. Does anyone have some tips on how to debug this sort of issue?
