• Ubuntu Eye-Infinity across 3 displays

  So I purchased a computer recently and have been trying to customise the display. Radeon 6800 series Ubuntu 10.10 I have three 22inch 1080P lcd monitors that are mounted together. Everything is working smooth. How do I get the 'big-desktop' display where I have one enormous display across all monitors? Linux - ATI Catalyst Control Center 11.2 does not give me an option to 'group' my profiles like the pictures on their site show with Windows. I have been searching all over for help. • Jquery Delay Function Calls

  I'm trying to find a way to delay all code that takes place after I make a service call. The reason for this delay is that my service returns code necesarry for the following functions and the result I pass is to these following functions is undefined. • Configuring IoC container from modules/plug-ins ?

  Hi guys, i am in big dilema.. I am working on highly modular web app in ASP.NET MVC 2 (in fact, core will be super lightweight, all work on modules/plugins). I found MEF pretty useful for modules discovery, but i dont want to us it as IoC container. There is pretty good chance that I will need advanced features of "true" IoC container, so I would like to use Unity. And here is the problem : how to allow modules to configure container (programatically) = register their own types (mvc controllers, custom implementations of services...) at application start without making hard dependency on Unity in all modules ? I know about Common Service Locator project, and it seems pretty good, but this interface co container only allows resolving types, not registering them (afaik). I really hope you can understand my point, I know my english is terrible (I am from non english speaking country :) Thanks a lot !

• Paging in ActiveRecord

  Does CastleProject ActiveRecord support paging? I need to load only data which is now seen on the screen. If I use [HasMany], it will be loaded as a whole either immediately or at the first call (if lazy attribute is true). However I only need something like first 100 records (then maybe 100 next records). Another question is how to load only 100 items. If the collection is too big, memory can reach its limit if we constantly load more and more items.

• How are deleted and renamed/moved files handled when merging a feature branch with trunk and reinteg

  I've got a big-ish project that needs a lot of work on a new feature, so I planned on using a branch to do this work. I haven't had to do this before, and I just wanted to get assurance from an experienced Subversion user that things "should" work smoothly. What I'm especially concerned with is how well Subversion handles deleted, renamed/moved files between a branch and the trunk. That is, if multiple files are deleted or renamed/moved in the branch, but those files continue to be used and receive changes in the trunk, will merges with the trunk still proceed without a hitch (reworking the branch, of course, as necessary)? Also, when I then reintegrate the branch with the trunk, if the files differ greatly in name (or existence) between the trunk and branch, will the reintegration be difficult? Will the files deleted (moved) in the branch now be deleted (moved) in the trunk, or will files linger and conflicts emerge? The SVN book didn't clear up these questions for me, so your experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  Lets be honest, most software that developers produce has quite modest performance requirements. E.g. Systems perhaps serving 100's of requests per second, if that. But lets assume for a moment (or even dream) that you where perhaps involved in the "next big thing" (whatever that means) and you wanted to put some sort of performance statistics logging in place to help you out when all those users come flying in. Performance statistics logging, how would you approach this requirement? Perhaps you would use some sort of generic framework for this? Or roll your own solution? What would you log? How granular? Or would you not even bother putting anything in place and rather deal with this issue when it actually became an issue? It would be really interesting to hear your thoughts on this topic.

• Python / Django : emulating a multidimensional layer on a MySQL database

  Hi, I'm working on a Django project where I need to provide a lot of different visualizations on the same data (for example average of a value for each month, for each year / for a location, etc...). I have been using an OLAP database once in college, and I thought that it would fit my needs, but it appears that it is much too heavy for what I need. Actually the volume of data is not very big, so I don't need any optimization, just a way to present different visualizations of the same data without having to write 1000 times the same code. So, to recap, I need a python library: to emulate a multidimensional database (OLAP style would be nice because I think it is quite convenient : star structure, and everything) non-intrusive, because I can't modify anything on the existing MySQL database easy-to-use, because otherwise there's no point in replacing some overhead by another.

• Can GIT, Mercurial, SVN, or other version control tools work well when project tree has binary files

  Sometimes our project tree can have binary files, such as jpg, png, doc, xls, or pdf. Can GIT, Mercurial, SVN, or other tools do a good job when only part of a binary file is changed? For example, if the spec is written in .doc and it is part of the repository, then if it is 4MB, and edited 100 times but just for 1 or 2 lines, and checked in 100 times during the year, then it is 400MB. If it is 100 different .doc and .xls files, then it is 40GB... not a size that is easy to manage. I have tried GIT and Mercurial and see that they both seem to add a big size of data even when 1 line is changed in a .doc or .pdf. Is there other way inside of GIT or Mercurial or SVN that can do the job?

• How to extract delegates from ViewController class?

  Hi I have the problem that my view controller class has too many delegates and starts to get big. I want to write the delegates in separate classes to keep the view controller class small. For delegates that are programmatically created (like UIAlertViewDelegate) I could do it easily. The problem is in the delegates assigned in Interface Builder. How can I tell the IB to assign, for example, another class as the UITableViewDelegate or UITableViewDataSource? Or how to choose another IBAction method for a Touch UP inside Event on a button? One solution would be to delete the connections from IB and write them programmatically at ViewDidLoad, but since I have a lot of ViewControllers, this would take a long time. any other ideas?

• What's the purpose of having a separate "operator new[]" ?

  Looks like operator new and operator new[] have exactly the same signature: void* operator new( size_t size ); void* operator new[]( size_t size ); and do exactly the same: either return a pointer to a big enough block of raw (not initialized in any way) memory or throw an exception. Also operator new is called internally when I create an object with new and operator new[] - when I create an array of objects with new[]. Still the above two special functions are called by C++ internally in exactly the same manner and I don't se how the two calls can have different meanings. What's the purpose of having two different functions with exactly the same signatures and exactly the same behavior?

• Compare range of ip addresses with start and end ip address in MySQL

  I have a MySQL table where I store IP ranges. It is setup in the way that I have the start address stored as a long, and the end address (and an id and some other data). Now I have users adding ranges by inputting a start and end ip address, and I would like to check if the new range is not already (partially) in the database. I know I can do a between query, but that doesn't seem to work with 2 different columns, and I also cannot figure out how to pass a range to compare it. Doing it in a loop in PHP is a possibility, but would with a range of e.g. 132.0.0.0-199.0.0.0 be quite a big amount of queries..

• AxWindowsMediaPlayer does not play audio/video from url ?

  HI, I am using activeXMediaPlayer to play files from url but each time I pass a url to it shows the message , "either the file is corrupted or player does not support the file format u are playing." But when i run the same url on browser the file is downloaded and this downloaded file can be played on the media player. I am not able to find out what the problem is . Because the same cod plays the local file and the downloaded files but not file from url Although the same code worked few months ago for the urls So is this my fault or some server related issues can affect this thing.   I have been given a nasty wake up a while ago when I discovered that my 10 years of experience was really equivalent of about 4 (got trapped in a big company doing the same thing over and over without realizing it) and is now paying a huge price. Question 1: I did servlets/JSP programming back in the day (2001-2003). Since then there have been libraries like GWT, YUI, etc. Is JSP still the preferred way of building web apps using Java? Question 2: Because I enjoyed what I was doing and needed to pay the bills, I didn't realize that the ground below me has shifted. How do avoid this in the future? My years of C system programming doesn't seem to matter a lot now to the young guys who talk about design patterns.

• Managing important runtime business logic with regard to a codebase

  I'm working on a project which will end up have a lot of application information stored in the form of records in a database. In this case, it's the configuration of data views: which grid columns to show/hide default filters to apply to each grid view column titles sorting subtotaling ... This information is a big part of the value of the application and is essential to it's function. The data will be altered by admins a fair amount, so it's not static and it wouldn't be appropriate to have to deploy a new version of the app every time the data changes. The question is, Where should this data be stored? It will definitely live in the database because that's how it's accessed, but I feel like it needs to also be kept with the version controlled codebase because it's an integral part of functioning of the application. Has anyone dealt with an issue like this before? What did you end up doing?

• How to set parameters in Python zlib module

  I want to write a Python program that makes PNG files. My big problem is with generating the CRC and the data in the IDAT chunk. Python 2.6.4 does have a zlib module, but there are extra settings needed. The PNG specification REQUIRES the IDAT data to be compressed with zlib's deflate method with a window size of 32768 bytes, but I can't find how to set those parameters in the Python zlib module. As for the CRC for each chunk, the zlib module documentation indicates that it contains a CRC function. I believe that calling that CRC function as crc32(data,-1) will generate the CRC that I need, though if necessary I can translate the C code given in the PNG specification. Note that I can generate the rest of the PNG file and the data that is to be compressed for the IDAT chunk, I just don't know how to properly compress the image data for the IDAT chunk after implementing the initial filtering step.

  Hi, I have some issue with the [embed] tag. Even if I set the embedFonts property of the textfield to true the text doesn't show up. The thing is that it worked previously and after some changes (not related to fonts) it doesn't. I'd like to understand how the embed process for font works to find the error in my code. I declare : [Embed(source = 'asset/font.ttf', fontName="font", mimeType="application/x-font-truetype")] private static var font:String; to assign the font to the program. Then i call "font" when declaring my textFormat. Is the "fontName" property the link with the textformat ?   I work for a small company with a .NET product that was acquired by a medium sized company with "big iron" products. Recently, the medium-sized part of the company acquired another small company with a similar .NET product and management went to have a look at their technology. They make heavy use of virtualization in their production environment and it's been decided that we will too. Our product was not designed to be run in a virtual environment, but some accommodations can be made. For instance; there are times when we're resource bound due to customer initiated processes. This initiation is "bursty" by nature, but the processing can be made asynchronous and throttled. This is something that would need to be done for scalability anyway. But there is other processing that we do that isn't so easily modified because we're resource bound for extended periods of time. How do I convince management that heavy use of virtualization is probably not appropriate for us?

  i received a big book full of processes. i was thinking about the end user (they will be lawyers) and decided the best GUI would be showing activity diagrams or business processes. It reminded me Quickbooks and how non-accountants can successfully use it and understand accounting processes. i began doing research before sending my project to a bunch of programmers: is there some open source solution? can i use MS Visio libraries? which UML tool is programable? what about Eclipse and its modeling tools? etc etc the key points here are: relationships between events, artifacts, actors, etc should be stored in a database. processes or steps in a process should be easily modified by updating the database do this sounds too crazy? (should I explain a bit more why it must be programmed this way?)

• Google's OpenID identifier is different depending on the "consumer" domain name. How to avoid potent

  I'm currently testing an OpenID implementation, and I'm noticing that Google sends a different identifier for different consuming host name / domain name, even for the same user. For example, Google sends a different identifier when the requesting site is localhost, compared to the identifier they send when the requesting site is 127.0.0.1 for the same user. Note: I haven't actually tested this using public domain names, but I can't see why the behavior would be any different. My concern with Google's behavior is that if we ever choose to change our website domain name in the future, then users will no longer be able to log in to the website using Google's OpenId as the identity provider. This seems to be a big problem. Am I missing something, or are all OpenID consuming sites faced with this potential problem? I've also tested this with MyOpenId, but the identifier that MyOpenId creates is fixed, so this wouldn't be a problem with them. Thanks.
