• How to set different colors to the bars in stacked bar chart in ireport ?

  Hi, I need to set a unique color to each bar in the stacked bar chart. Whatever the color I see in one bar it shouldn't be repeated in any other bar or any other stack. For example: I have 5 bars in the report. Each bar has 3 different stacks. I want to apply a red related colors to the first bar and its stacks. Second bar should have blue related colors. etc.. • Architecting a generic search result web control

  In a project I'm currently working for we've stumbled upon the need for several kinds of search results presentation controls. The search result are similar, but not identical. For example, in the "office search" result we might want to present the office name and location, while in the "document search" could contain document name, author and publishing date. These fields should be sortable. My current strategy is to employ the Factory pattern and do something like this: ISearchResult officeResults = SearchResultFactory.CreateOfficeSearchResults(data); ISearchResult documentResults = SearchResultFactory.CreateDocumentSearchResults(data); The problem is: I don't know how to implement the markup code. Should I just do Controls.Add(officeResults); in the containing page? Or is there some ASPX trickery to create generic web controls? Or maybe I'm overthinking this and just should create five classes? ;)

• Php/ODBC encoding problem

  I use ODBC to connect to SQL Server from PHP. In PHP I read some string (nvarchar column) data from SQL Server and then want to insert it to mysql database. When I try to insert such value to mysql database table I get this mysql error: Incorrect string value: '\xB3\xB9ow...' for column 'name' at row 1 For string with all ASCII characters everything is fine, the problem occurs when non-ASCII characters (from some European languages) exist. So, in more general terms: there is a Unicode string in MS SQL Server database, which is retrieved by PHP trough ODBC. Then it is put in sql insert query (as value for utf-8 varchar column) which is executed for mysql database. Can someone explain to me what is happening in this situation in terms of encoding? At which step what character encoding convertions may take place? I use: PHP 5.2.5, MySQL5.0.45-community-nt, MS Sql Server 2005.

  We have an open plan office with all our programmers, web designers and client service team. Problem is my programmer team has to put up with dance music and wailing guitars all day due to the fact that designers and client services team think this makes the office a better environment. When I turn it off (by blocking the streaming of music on the router, he-he-he) they complain that its so quiet and dull. How do I explain to them that programmers need a calm quiet environment without coming across like a really annoying geek? Any other thoughts or ideas appreciated.

  If you have a cold that isn't too bad, does it make sense to still go into the office and get some coding done? Assume a private office, no meetings for the day, and you have some documentation and coding tasks that need to get done. Also assume that you operate on a PTO system, where all days off are "vacation" or PTO. To clarify, should one just not code at all when under the weather? That's what I'm getting at. Will you just kick yourself in your own rear when you go back to deal with code you wrote when you are sick? What is the error defect rate of sick vs non-sick programming hours?

On 1 I have configuration for replication (publication), and I would like to setup Express version like subscriber. but I can't to connect to publisher SQL Server replication requires the actual server name to make a connection to the server. Specify the actual server name, 'XXXX'. (Replication.Utilities) I have tried to cheat and added XXXX server name to hosts file, but it dos't help. • What is a good way to quantify C++ knowledge and skill?

  I have only recently started to study (with the hopes of mastering) C++, one because i have started to love it and two because it's a good career/profession move. At the same time i wish to quantify my knowledge and skill so as to set my self apart from those who just throw C/C++ on their resumes and fish. Is there an open, industry and community recognized way of quantifying ones knowledge and skill in C++? I have looked at Brainbench, MS C++ certificates, and other online certification sites which offer to rate you at $50-$200 per test however there doesn't seem to be a standard on how to rate knowledge and skill. It's one thing for MS or Oracle/Sun to have certifications for their products but C++ is a standard, shouldn't there be a standard way or rating one's knowledge and skill there in? Thanks.

• Using ASP.Net 4.0 for new Dev projects

  I am currently in the early stages of developing a couple web applications, I have not written any code yet as I am still just gathering requirements and scoping things out. I want to target ASP.Net 4.0 winforms as the platform for these apps but I want to make sure there are no glaring issues with this new version before I commit. I understand that if I was porting an existing app from 2.0, 3.5 to 4.0 there may be issues but I am starting from scratch on these projects and plan to write these apps to support the new features of 4.0. Should I wait for the first service pack to come out? Just seems like more work to start with 3.5 now only to go back through and tweak things for 4.0 in just a few months or even before I finish the app. Our servers are Win 2K3 with IIS6 and MS SQL 2000, Should I expect any problems with VS 2010 and MS SQL 2000 in regards to Linq to SQL and EF?

  I have an application in WPF running. I would like that, when a button is clicked inside this application, another application opens, with its window maximized. However, I don't want my first application to stop and wait. I want both to be open and running independently. When the button is clicked again, in case the application is minimized, the application is maximized. In case it is not, it is open again. How is it possible using C#?   As I'm coding for both Windows and Linux, I have a whole host of problems. Microsoft Visual C++ has no stdint header, but for that I wrote my own. Now I found out that MS C++'s new operator does not throw an exception, so I want to fix this a quickly as possible. I know I can define a Macro with Parameters in Parenthesis, can I define a macro that replaces MyClass x = new MyClass(); with #ifdef MSC_VER if(!(MyClass x = new MyClass()) { throw new std::bad_alloc(); } #else MyClass x = new MyClass(); #endif (or something equivalent), AND works in BOTH MS C++ and G++ ? Or alternatively if that is not possible, a batch file to run over the Code to do this? I have become rather dependent on this exception being thrown.

  Question: I need to synchronize a few ActionScript files from my computer to a network share (backup). I saw a quick fix would be using Microsoft Sync Framework for this, and write a windows service. My problem is I also use Linux, and before I start with MS vendor lockin, is there any sync framework/library/whatever I could use that works accross platform? Or does the MS sync framework work on Linux, too? It is my understanding that it is a wrapper around some com objects, thus it wouldn't work. All I need is synchronizing files. So never mind the database part, although it would be nice to have it, too.

  I need to write some vbscripts in my new project. I was told by other people that vbscripting is easy, but seems to me, it is not. For example, in the following example (provided by microsoft), these functions: CreateObject, CreateShortcut, as well as these property names: TargetPath, WindowStyle, Hotkey, etc, are used, but I just cannot find the corresponding API documentation about how to use them. In other words, how do you know you need to call these functions in your vbscripts? Visual Studio 2008/2010 do not have templates for vbscript either. • Display list of websites on local IIS server in a web page

  Hey Guys, I am currently trying to figure out a way to list all of the websites that are running on a local IIS 6 server at the office and display links to each site with their descriptions so we can always find our development sites with ease. The way that the server is currently set up is I add a DNS record for a new site. eg: newsite.company.local and then add it to IIS. This way all the users in our office can access this site via their browser and developers can test, admins can review etc etc. What I want to do now is automatically generate a webpage with a list of all of the sites running on iis and have it be available across the network. I have never looked into this before and have no idea where to start.. help! Thanks :)

• SQlite/Firebird: Does any of them support multiple concurrent write access ?

  Question: I currently store ASP.net application data in XML files. Now the problem is I have asynchronous operations, which means I ran into the problem of simultanous write access on a XML file... Now, I'm considering moving to an embedded database to solve the issue. I'm currently considering SQlite and embeddable Firebird. I'm not sure however if SQlite or Firebird can handle multiple concurrent write access. And I certainly don't want the same problem again. Anybody knows ? SQlite certainly is better known, but which one is better - SQlite or Firebird ? I tend to say Firebird, but I don't really know. No MS-Access or MS-SQL-express recommodations please, I'm a sane person.

  Is there a possibility to set size of Report to fit on one page pragmatically. In excel there is option for page Scaling where We can set how many pages by tall and by wide is going to be printed . Does exists something analog in SSRS2008 ? I am using Sql Report Server 2008 and Ill try to do that by exporting report to excel and after that to set numbers of pages using ASP and C#. But the bad thing that I do not have office system installed on my server, and If I deploy code over visual studio project for Excel worksheet I am afraid that is not going to work on my server. Subquestion Are there any .NET library for Excel which implement the needed function for page scaling that can work without Office installed on target server.

  I've got a web page which is implementing cookie based ASPNET Forms Authentication. Once the user has logged in the page, he can edit some information using a form which is created using a partialview and returned to him as a dialog for editing. The action linked to the partial view is decorated as follows: [HttpGet] [OutputCache(Duration = 0, VaryByParam = "None")] [Authorize(Roles = "test")] public ActionResult changeTripInfo(int tripID, bool ovride=false) { ... } The problem i am experiencing is the latency between the request and the time when the dialog is shown to the user: time ranges between 800 and 1100 ms which is not justified by the complexity of the form. Investigating with Glimpse turns out that the time to process the AuthorizeAttribute (see snip) sums up to at least 650 ms which is troubling me. Looking at the Sql server log, the call which checks the user roles takes, as expected, virtually nothing (duration 0). How can I reduce this time? Am I missing some optimization?
