  • A simple deployment example using Oracle Solaris 11

    Last week I was over in Melbourne and Sydney to present at an Oracle Technology Network System Administration Day. During a set of morning sessions, I presented on some of the new things that we've done in Oracle Solaris 11 and our focus for the future. One of the sessions I presented was giving a quick technical overview of what a typical application deployment scenario would look like using technologies like the Image Packaging System (IPS), Service Management Facility (SMF), Oracle Solaris Zones, and network virtualization. While it's just a simple example, it provides the basic building blocks for a more advanced configuration that a data center would typically deploy. Given these would likely be of general interest, I thought I'd upload the slides for others to view - enjoy! They consolidated seven Web sites that are used to host individually onto iStore.   • Using Git in Enterprise environment

    Git is an excellent version control. If we exclude the fact that, it doesn't have an excellent GUI support, it's really good and fast. But the source controls like Clearcase has large support for enterprise customers. Companies investing huge amount for source control servers and licesense. Of late most of the large companies like Google adopting Git over the other version controls. But the company is having strong open source group which consistently provide development and support for the tool (Even they might be having a custom version of Git of their own). At the same time, large companies are not really bothered about adopting open source projects and make it relevant for them. Is Git really a reliable tool for enterprise environment, especially for Windows Platform? The support is a question for Git as it's an open source version control. Any companies are there to provide solutions and support? How the server costs comparing to other version controls like Clear-case?

I am facing problem w.r.t WaitForSingleObject and WaitForMultipleObjects interfaces In my application I spawn multiple threads where all threads wait for events from parent process or periodically run for every t seconds. How can I implement this in Unix. I have checked pthread_cond_timedwait, but we have to specify absolute time for this.

    I have a problem with rendering my html page by the same browsers in different OS. There are 3 spans and position of each span is corrected through css(position:relative). But I have found out that the page that looks correct in firefox under Linux, shows not right at the same firefox(3.5.7) under Windows OS. Linux(Left - How it should be)/Windows(right): link text And the same with other browsers. What is the cause of this problem and how is possible to solve it. If this exists, let call it rate-limit, I want to be able to type in a terminal something like cat /dev/urandom | rate-limit 3 -k | foo in order to send a a stream of random bytes to foo's standard input at a rate (lower than) 3 kbytes/s.

    I have a tab-delimited file that has over 200 million lines. What's the fastest way in linux to convert this to a csv file? This file does have multiple lines of header information which I'll need to strip out down the road, but the number of lines of header is known. I have seen suggestions for sed and gawk, but I wonder if there is a "preferred" choice.
