  • Silverlight Isolated Storage and loading big files

    In a Windows Phone 7 application, I would like to query a big XML file (list of cities) stored using Isolated Storage. If I do that this way, will the file be loaded to memory ( 5 mo) ? If so, what other solution do I have? Edit: More details. I want to use AutoCompleteBox (http://www.jeff.wilcox.name/2008/10/introducing-autocompletebox/), but instead of using a web service (this is fixed data, no need to be online), I want to query a file/database/isolated storage... I have a fixed list of cities. I said in the comments it's 40k, but it finally seems closer to 1k rows.

  • Improve performance of sorting files by extension

    With a given array of file names, the most simpliest way to sort it by file extension is like this: Array.Sort(fileNames, (x, y) => Path.GetExtension(x).CompareTo(Path.GetExtension(y))); The problem is that on very long list (~800k) it takes very long to sort, while sorting by the whole file name is faster for a couple of seconds! Theoretical, there is a way to optimize it: instead of using Path.GetExtension() and compare the newly created extension-only-strings, we can provide a Comparison than compares starting from the LastIndexOf('.') without creating new strings. Now, suppose i found the LastIndexOf('.'), i want to reuse native .NET's StringComparer and apply it only to the part on string after the LastIndexOf('.'). Didn't found a way to do that. Any ideas?

  • FDF-files not opening properly

    We have created a servlet that provides a FDF file for our clients. The FDF file is created by iText and the output looks fine. Whenever we open the FDF either from the Servlet, or from a local file, AcrobatReader starts, asks if the PDF should be downloaded, we allow that and then we see the PDF - without the values we filled in the form. One thing that seems strange is, that regardless of the Browser, we get prompted about what to do with the PDF file that Adobe has tried to load. Anything else that clicking "open" will result in a empty Acrobat viewer window. I suspect that Acrobat forgets what to do with the PDF - but I have run out of ideas. Anyone got an idea where to look further?

  • Sending files using Winsock - optimal send() data length?

    I am using Winsock with non-blocking sockets to send a file to a client. The way I'm doing it right now is that I read a chunk of 8192 bytes from the file, and then loop until all of it successfully goes through send() (obviously handling WSAEWOULDBLOCK as it occurs). I then move on and read the next 8192 bytes, and so on... Although I can use any other number than 8192 when I test the transfer on my local machine, once I try it over a network, it seems like 8191 is the largest number I can use. When I try to use any number higher than 8191 (starting with 8192), the file transfer becomes extremely slow (about 5 times slower). Is there any reason why 8191 is so special? I've done some more testing and it turns out that using 8000 is slightly faster (by 0.5%). If you understand why 8191 is so special, can you tell me if there is a number better than the others (better than 8000)? I have a feeling that it has something to do with the fact that the default send buffer allocated to the socket by Winsock is 8KB, but I don't understand why. It might also have something to do with the Nagle algorithm, but again, I'm not sure how. Note that I have not modified the SO_SNDBUF option nor the TCP_NODELAY option. Or am I doing this all wrong? What's the best way of sending a file over a non-blocking socket?

    I have a site with index.php in the root folder, images in /img , and overview.php in /content . I have a sidebar.php file that is included in both index.php and overview.php . How should I refer to /img/image.gif if I include a link in each file? The location of image.gif changes relative to the location of the file that references it. Using /img/image.gif in sidebar.php will work in index.php, but it fails for the file located at /content/overview.php. The only solution that I can see is to either include a seperate sidebar.php in each subdirectory, or include an /img directory in every sub-directory. The best suggestion that I can find is to use the <base html tag as suggested here: Change relative link paths for included content in PHP However, in the same link, SamGoody suggests that the <base tag "is no longer properly supported in Internet Explorer, since version 7." I'd like some insight on the matter before committing to a course of action. Thanks. Is that the "best practice" (for sites smaller in scale than Facebook, where a simple DB table just won't scale)?

    I am configuring Rails with MongoDB, and find a strange problem when paring config/mongo.yml file. config/mongo.yml is generated by executing script/rails generate mongo_mapper:config, and it looks like following: defaults: &defaults host: 127.0.0.1 port: 27017 development: <<: *defaults database: tc_web_development test: <<: *defaults database: tc_web_test From the config file we can see the objects development and test should both have a database field. But when it is parsed and loaded in config/initializers/mongo.db, config = YAML::load(File.read(Rails.root.join('config/mongo.yml'))) puts config.inspect MongoMapper.setup(config, Rails.env) the strange thing comes: the output of puts config.inspect is {"defaults"=>{"host"=>"127.0.0.1", "port"=>27017}, "development"=>{"host"=>"127.0.0.1", "port"=>27017}, "test"=>{"host"=>"127.0.0.1", "port"=>27017}} which does not contain database attribute. But when I execute the same statements in a plain ruby console, instead of using rails console, mongo.yml is parsed in a right way. {"defaults"=>{"host"=>"127.0.0.1", "port"=>27017}, "development"=>{"host"=>"127.0.0.1", "port"=>27017, "database"=>"tc_web_development"}, "test"=>{"host"=>"127.0.0.1", "port"=>27017, "database"=>"tc_web_test"}} I am wondering what may be the cause of this problem.     Hello, the title says it all. I have seen some similar questions on SO like this or this, but either i have overlooked something or my requirement is different, neither works. My situation is following: i have a Masterpage one of its contentpage is called MasterData.aspx MasterData has an asp.net ajax tabcontainer control with one usercontrol in every tabpanel these usercontrols(f.e. MD_Customer.ascx)hold the main content(like a normal page) they all have GridViews in it and i want to provide an Excel-Export-Button What i've tried is is to use an iframe like here. But the function that adds the iframe to the document gets never called and therefore i never see the save-as-dialog. Maybe this is caused by using a MasterPage. Does somebody has an idea on how to provide a button in an UpdatePanel that causes an async postback, so that i can generate a CSV dynamically in codebehind and write it to the response?   • MATLAB - Delete elements of binary files without loading entire file

    This may be a stupid question, but Google and MATLAB documentation have failed me. I have a rather large binary file (10 GB) that I need to open and delete the last forty million bytes or so. Is there a way to do this without reading the entire file to memory in chunks and printing it out to a new file? It took 6 hours to generate the file, so I'm cringing at the thought of re-reading the whole thing. EDIT: The file is 14,440,000,000 bytes in size. I need to chop it to 14,400,000,000.

    I have a C++ DLL that imports a .tlb file generated in a C# project. The C++ DLL is a wrapper DLL containing functions that call the corresponding C# functions. When I call the C++ functions on the computer that I built the projects, all works well. But when I copy the DLL's and generated tlb's to another computer with the same exact version of Windows and installed programs andI call the C++ functions, it breaks with a COM error. However, after recompiling the projects on the new computer, everything works again. I already checked the "Work on All Computers" for both projects but this keeps happening. What else do I need to do for the DLL's to work on all computers?
