  • Between-request Garbage Collection using Passenger

    We're using Rails 3.0.7 and REE 1.8.7. Long-term, we will be upgrading, but at the moment it's not feasible. Following the advice of several blog posts, we've been tuning our GC, and have settings that work pretty well. But we would really like to run GC outside of the request-response cycle. I've tried patching Passenger per this post, and using the code supplied in this SO question. In both cases, GC does indeed happen between requests. However, every time the between-request GC happens, I see a bunch of this: MONGODB [INFO] Connecting... My question is this: what is the best way to handle the situation when a search engine visits a URL corresponding to a removed article? Should the app respond with a permanent redirect (301 Moved Permanently) to a "article not found" page, or is there a better way to handle this?

They are working on the same table (create, read, update, delete data) so I have to update their views, to reflect changes, every few seconds - currently I am thinking to use a different thread to do that. I am using the MySQL database engine. Is there a way, using JDBC, to listen for changes on a specific table in the database and triggering a Java method only when changes are made?

  • Setting timeout for embedded Lua

    I have embedded Lua in a C/C+= application. I want to be able to set a timeout value to prevent getting trapped with badly written scripts that can result in infinite loops (or even string searches that take an infinite time to complete). Basically, I want to be able to set a time interval and if the script fails to complete running at the end of that time interval, I want to be able to kill the Lua script engine (gracefully, if possible). Anyone knows of best practise way to do this?
