  • How to extend the list of available Java Locales

    I am looking for a way to add more Locales to the Locales available in Java 1.6. But the Locales I want to create do not have ISO-3166 country codes, nor ISO-639 language codes. Is there any way to do this anyways? The Locales I want to add only differ in the language names, but the smaller an ethnic group is, the more picky they get about their identity ;-) So I thought about extending an existing Locale, something like UserDefinedLocale extends Locale { UserDefinedLocale (Locale parentLocale) {...} } but java.util.Locale is final, which makes it especially hard to hack something around... So, is the idea that the list of Java Locales is exhaustive? Am I the first to miss some more Locales?

  • How do I get a list of all languages that my Windows Forms application has been localized to?

    I have localized localized a Form into two language by setting the Localizable property to True and setting the Language from (Default) to (Dutch(Netherlands)), and I changed the control texts. Visual Studio generated the resource files and compiles them into the application. I need to get a simple list of all the languages that my form has been localized into. Currently it would be just two English and Dutch, but more may come. I need to programatically get a list of "what languages my application is localized into". Do I look into the resource files or use ResourceManager or what? Thanks!

    So in class we get this school task where we need to check if one of the fields in unfilled and display an error. No we did this but for some strange reason it doesnt display a error when a radio button is unchecked. (textfield null check works fine) I've tried with a friend many possabilities but they all doesnt seem to work. We have been stuck at this task for 2 hours. Now we have tried making seperate if's but that doesnt seem to work too.   • Protecting IP for scripting projects

    There are some tasks where the obvious language choice is with scripting languages: bash, Python, Ruby, Tcl... however I find it hard to protect a company IP once the product is delivered because the application is never compiled. The client will have complete access to every single line of code. Which one are the choices to protect a product IP when it is best implemented with scripting languages? (switching to a compiled language such as C++ should not be an option) I know that some interpreted languages can be compiled, but there are cases where the process can be inverted

    I am converting XML children into the element parameters and have a dirty regex script I used in Textmate. I know that dot (.) doesn't search for newlines, so this is how I got it to resolve. Search language="(.*)" (.*)<education>(.*)(\n)?(.*)?(\n)?(.*)?(\n)?(.*)?</education> (.*)<years>(.*)</years> (.*)<grade>(.*)</grade> Replace grade="$13" language="$1" years="$11"> <education>$3$4$5$6$7$8$9</education> I know there's a better way to do this.   • C++ for small, individual projects (i.e. hobby programming)

    I recently started C++. I am using PHP right now and decided to take a look at C++. Web programming had me working with a couple of languages, with a couple of people. I wanted to do programming where I only had to bother with one language and create small utility apps (mostly not web-based). I wanted a compiled, strongly-type language without memorizing a tome of classes. Basically I wanted to learn C++ for the following: mobile programming (I don't ever want to go touching Java, and I don't have a Mac for Objective C or IPhone SDK) small desktop apps like DTRs, POSs creating small desktop-based games creating small Air-like applications that can access the web for additional content I heard that C++ is not beginner-friendly and is mostly used for huge projects with lots of calculations and fine details (like 3D games). Is it practical or even possible for me to use C++ for the above cases? (Sorry, I haven't delved on C++ that much yet, so aside from "huge, monolithic project", I don't know any other uses for it)

    I'm storing expanded SVN keyword literals for .cpp files in 'static char const *const' class members and want to store the .h descriptions as similarly as possible. In short, I need to guarantee single instantiation of a static member (presumably in a .cpp file) to an auto-generated non-integer literal living in a potentially shared .h file. Unfortunately the language makes no attempt to resolve multiple instantiations resulting from assignments made outside class definitions and explicitly forbids non-integer inits inside class definitions. My best attempt (using static-wrapping internal classes) is not too dirty, but I'd really like to do better.     I know from this question that Firefox 3.0 and up stores its cookies in an SQLite database. My question is: can you access this database from other desktop programs in such a way that you could add a cookie? I realize this has security implications. However, I do not want to read them at all. I want to be able to set one cookie if possible. I don't even want to overwrite a cookie. I just want to add it if it isn't there already. This is sort of a personal project I'm working on for fun. This question is mostly language agnostic. I would prefer a solution in C#, but proof of concept in any language will suffice. Extra credit: It would be cool to set the same cookie in Internet Explorer, too

  • Should I be using libraries if I'm trying to learn how to program?

    I have been programming "a lot" in the past few months and at first I was trying to find the "easyest" language. Fortunately I realized that it's not about the language, it's about learning HOW to code. I ran into the Stanford lectures online (programming methodology) and I watched them all (around 23 hours total) awhile ago. Then I got into Java ME and programmed about 28.47% of a mobile RPG game (only around 2k lines of code). I feel like I learned a lot from those two experiences compared to previous ones but now that I'm moving into flash/actionscript 3.0 development and I'm finding myself learning like I did when I first started with PHP. I'm not really getting whats under the hood kind of. I'm finding myself using libraries to speed up development time which doesn't seem like a bad thing BUT I personally do not know how to write the libraries myself off hand. So should I be coding everything myself or is it ok to use libraries when you don't even know how to code them?

  • Will Haskell be a good choice for my task?

    I'm starting a new project and don't know which language to use. My 'must have' requirements are: Be able to run on Windows/LinuxMacOs natively (native executable) - user should be able to just run the exe (when on Windows for example) and see the results. No runtimes/interpreters (no jvm, clr, etc) - one file download should be enough to run the application. Full unicode support. Be able to manipulate OS threads (create them, run multiple tasks in parallel on multi-core CPUs, etc). Be reasonably fast (Python level performance and better). To have some kind of standard library that does low-level, mundane tasks. Not very niche and have some community behind it to be able to ask questions. My 'nice to have' requirements are: Language should be functional It should have good string manipulation capabilities (not necessarily regex) Not extremely hard to learn I'm thinking about Haskell now but keeping in mind OCaml as well. Please advice if my choice is correct.

The application must run fast using low computer resources. We have been looking to use php on a custom made mvc framework but we received advice from other sources that py/django is the exactly language/framework that we need in terms of maintainability and development speed because it was developed for exactly this kind of projects so I need an expert advice on this matter with pro and cons for each choice.

  • Determining where a function is defined in C#?

    Hey all - I am a complete novice at C# (I've never used it before) and recently needed to look over some code written in it. I spent the longest time trying to track down a nonexistent method in a class that didn't seem to be defined anywhere in the class that was using it. I later found out it was an "extension method," which I gather is a method grafted onto another class by some source. I completely understand the rationale behind this language feature and actually think it's quite nice. However, as someone without much experience in the language, it makes it harder to look up unfamiliar methods, since the method in question could be defined anywhere. My question is this: given an unfamiliar method call in C#, what's the best way for me to look up more info on it, given that it could be an extension method defined in an entirely separate class?   • Using Google to find programming answers (does locale matter)?

    I have overseas developers working for me, and sometimes I am surprised they can't find the same resources online that I do. They are in a South America country... and Google defaults to their language/locale. What do you think about this, when using it to solve computer programs? There is very little software development done in their country (as compared to the US). Is Google skewing their results for articles in their language or posted on sites that are local to them? Should I insist that they bypass their local Google search and have them use the US version?

  • PHP array performance

    Hi, this is my first question on Stackoverflow, please bear with me. I'm testing an algorithm for 2d bin packing and I've chosen PHP to mock it up as it's my bread-and-butter language nowadays. As you can see on http://themworks.com/pack_v0.2/oopack.php?ol=1 it works pretty well, but you need to wait around 10-20 seconds for 100 rectangles to pack. For some hard to handle sets it would hit the php's 30s runtime limit. I did some profiling and it shows that most of the time my script goes through different parts of a small 2d array with 0's and 1's in it. It either checks if certain cell equals to 0/1 or sets it to 0/1. It can do such operations million times and each times it takes few microseconds. I guess I could use an array of booleans in a statically typed language and things would be faster. Or even make an array of 1 bit values. I'm thinking of converting the whole thing to some compiled language. Is PHP just not good for it? If I do need to convert it to let's say C++, how good are the automatic converters? My script is just a lot of for loops with basic arrays and objects manipulations. Thank you! Edit. This function gets called more than any other.   • Making a Statement: How to retrieve the T-SQL statement that caused an event

    If you’ve done any troubleshooting of T-SQL, you know that sooner or later, probably sooner, you’re going to want to take a look at the actual statements you’re dealing with. In extended events we offer an action (See the BOL topic that covers Extended Events Objects for a description of actions) named sql_text that seems like it is just the ticket. Well…not always – sounds like a good reason for a blog post. When is a statement not THE statement? The sql_text action returns the same information that is returned from DBCC INPUTBUFFER, which may or may not be what you want. For example, if you execute a stored procedure, the sql_text action will return something along the lines of “EXEC sp_notwhatiwanted” assuming that is the statement you sent from the client. Often times folks would like something more specific, like the actual statements that are being run from within the stored procedure or batch. Enter the stack Extended events offers another action, this one with the descriptive name of tsql_stack, that includes the sql_handle and offset information about the statements being run when an event occurs. With the sql_handle and offset values you can retrieve the specific statement you seek using the DMV dm_exec_sql_statement. The BOL topic for dm_exec_sql_statement provides an example for how to extract this information, so I’ll cover the gymnastics required to get the sql_handle and offset values out of the tsql_stack data collected by the action. I’m the first to admit that this isn’t pretty, but this is what we have in SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2. We will be making it easier to get statement level information in the next major release of SQL Server. The sample code For this example I have a stored procedure that includes multiple statements and I have a need to differentiate between those two statements in my tracing. I’m going to track two events: module_end tracks the completion of the stored procedure execution and sp_statement_completed tracks the execution of each statement within a stored procedure. I’m adding the tsql_stack events (since that’s the topic of this post) and the sql_text action for comparison sake. (If you have questions about creating event sessions, check out Pedro’s post Introduction to Extended Events.) If you stop the session the in-memory target data is lost. Now that we’ve collected some events related to running the stored procedure, we need to do some processing of the data. I’m going to do this in multiple steps using temporary tables so you can see what’s going on; kind of like having to “show your work” on a math test. The first step is to just cast the target data into XML so I can work with it. After that you can pull out the interesting columns, for our purposes I’m going to limit the output to just the event name, object name, stack and sql text. You can see that I got back two sp_statement_completed events, which makes sense given the test procedure I’m running, and I got back a single module_end for the entire statement. If you examine the stack from the previous table, you can see that each stack has two frames and my query is parsing each event into frames, so this is expected. There is nothing magic about the two frames, that’s just how many I get for this example, it could be fewer or more depending on your statements. The key point here is that I now have a sql_handle and the offset values for those handles, so I can use dm_exec_sql_statement to get the actual statement. Just a reminder, this DMV can only return what is in the cache – if you have old data it’s possible your statements have been ejected from the cache. “Old” is a relative term when talking about caches and can be impacted by server load and how often your statement is actually used. As with most things in life, your mileage may vary. You’ll notice that it’s back down to one row per event, what happened to frame 2? The short answer is, “I don’t know.” In SQL Server 2008 nothing is returned from dm_exec_sql_statement for the second frame and I believe this to be a bug; this behavior has changed in the next major release and I see the actual statement run from the client in frame 2. (In other words I see the same statement that is returned by the sql_text action  or DBCC INPUTBUFFER) There is also something odd going on with frame 1 returned from the module_end event; you can see that the offset values are both 0 and only the first letter of the statement is returned. It seems like the offset_end should actually be –1 in this case and I’m not sure why it’s not returning this correctly. This behavior is being investigated and will hopefully be corrected in the next major version. You can workaround this final oddity by ignoring the offsets and just returning the entire cached statement. I leave it to you to determine when this information is needed and use the workaround when appropriate. Aside: You might think it’s odd that I’m showing apparent bugs with my samples, but you’re going to see this behavior if you use this method, so you need to know about it.I’m all about transparency.
