At RedToRope, the DIY and project blog of electrical engineering student and tinkering James Williamson, James shares how he used a crayon and a little heat to make the lettering and symbols on his electronics project really pop. It’s an old trick I’ve used many times over the years with firearms but had never thought to use with engraved text on electronics or other devices. • Enum.HasFlag

  An enumerated type, also called an enumeration (or just an enum for short), is simply a way to create a numeric type restricted to a predetermined set of valid values with meaningful names for those values. While most enumerations represent discrete values, or well-known combinations of those values, sometimes you want to combine values in an arbitrary fashion. These enumerations are known as flags enumerations because the values represent flags which can be set or unset. To combine multiple enumeration values, you use the logical OR operator. For example, consider the following: public enum FileAccess { None = 0, Read = 1, Write = 2, }   class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { FileAccess access = FileAccess.Read | FileAccess.Write; Console.WriteLine(access); } } The output of this simple console application is: The value 3 is the numeric value associated with the combination of FileAccess.Read and FileAccess.Write. Clearly, this isn’t the best representation. What you really want is for the output to look like: To achieve this result, you simply add the Flags attribute to the enumeration. The Flags attribute changes how the string representation of the enumeration value is displayed when using the ToString() method. Although the .NET Framework does not require it, enumerations that will be used to represent flags should be decorated with the Flags attribute since it provides a clear indication of intent. One “problem” with Flags enumerations is determining when a particular flag is set. The code to do this isn’t particularly difficult, but unless you use it regularly it can be easy to forget. To test if the access variable has the FileAccess.Read flag set, you would use the following code: (access & FileAccess.Read) == FileAccess.Read Starting with .NET 4, a HasFlag static method has been added to the Enum class which allows you to easily perform these tests: access.HasFlag(FileAccess.Read) This method follows one of the “themes” for the .NET Framework 4, which is to simplify and reduce the amount of boilerplate code like this you must write. • How do you create large, growable, shared filesystems on Linux at AWS?

  What are acceptable/reasonable/best ways to provide large, growable, shared storage at AWS, exposed as a single filesystem? We're currently making 1TB EBS volumes ~biweekly and NFS exporting with no_subtree_check and nohide. In this setup, distinct exports appear under a single mount on the client. This arrangement does not scale well. The options we've considered: LVM2 with ext4. resize2fs is too slow. Btrfs on Linux. not obviously ready for prime time yet. ZFS on Linux. not obviously ready for prime time yet (although LLNL uses it) ZFS on Solaris. future of this combo is uncertain (to me), and new OS in the mix glusterfs. heard mostly good but two scary (and maybe old?) stories. The ideal solution would provide sharing, a single fs view, easy expandability, snapshots, and replication. Thanks for sharing ideas and experience.

• Database Connectivity Test with UDL File

  I bounced around between projects a lot last week.  What each project had in common was the need to validate at least one SQL connection.  Whether you have SQL tools like SSMS installed or not, this is a very easy task if you are aware of the UDL (Universal Data Link) files.  Create a new file and name it anything as long as it has the .udl extension. Open the file, choose a provider: Click Next >> or navigate to the Connection Tab to provide connection information.  Once you provide server and login credentials, the database list will populate.  At this point, you know the connection is valid. but go ahead and click the Test Connection button anyway. On the final tab, you can provide extra connection information like Application Name which can come in handy.  The All tab is beneficial if you want to build a valid connection string to include in your own applications.  If you save the file and then open in Notepad, you’ll find that said connection string: Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;Initial Catalog=master;Data Source=(local);Application Name=TestApp I hope this tip helps save you some time.  How do you test if you don’t have SSMS installed?

  I am in the phase of designing a mmo browser based game (certainly not massive, but all connected players are in the same universe), and I am struggling with finding a good solution to the problem of distributing players across processes. I'm using node.js with socket.io. I have read this helpful article, but I would like some advice since I am also concerned with different processes. Solution 1: Tie a process to a map location (like a map-cell), connect players to the process corresponding to their location. When a player performs an action, transmit it to all other players in this process. When a player moves away, he will eventually have to connect to another process (automatically). Pros: Easier to implement Cons: Must divide map into zones Player reconnection when moving into a different zone is probably annoying If one zone/process is always busy (has players in it), it doesn't really load-balance, unless I split the zone which may not be always viable There shouldn't be any visible borders Solution 1b: Same as 1, but connect processes of bordering cells, so that players on the other side of the border are visible and such. Maybe even let them interact. Solution 2: Spawn processes on demand, unrelated to a location. Have one special process to keep track of all connected player handles, their location, and the process they're connected to. Then when a player performs an action, the process finds all other nearby players (from the special player-process-location tracking node), and instructs their matching processes to relay the action. Pros: Easy load balancing: spawn more processes Avoids player reconnecting / borders between zones Cons: Harder to implement and test Additional steps of finding players, and relaying event/action to another process If the player-location-process tracking process fails, all other fail too I would like to hear if I'm missing something, or completely off track.

• Linux laptop encryption

  What are my options for encrypting the /home directories of my Ubuntu laptops? They are currently setup without any encryption and some have /home as a separate partition whilst others don't. Most of these laptops are single-user standalone laptops which are out on the road a lot. Is ecryptfs and the encrypted Private directory good enough or are there better, more secure, options? If somebody got hold of the laptop, how easy would it be for them to gain access to the encrypted files? Similar questions for encrypted lvm, truecrypt and any other solution I may not be aware of.

• Windows 2008 server hosting in Europe

  Hi, I'm searching for a Windows 2008 server in Europe, preferably in Germany or UK or anything with good routing to Denmark (as its where the primary traffic will be generated from). The server will be used as web server (asp.net mvc, php), mail server and database server. We are running a few sites with around 200 concurrent users, which isn't much, but we intend to expand in the near future and the server should be easy to scale in form of adding more RAM and HDD space - if its possible. I think a virtual server may be the best choice - hyper-v or virtuozzo? - considering cost vs specs - but i'm open to suggestions. The max budget is in the range of $1000-1200/year. You guys have any suggestions? Let me know if you need further info.

• Where is the SQL Azure Development Environment

  Recently I posted an entry explaining that you can develop in Windows Azure without having to connect to the main service on the Internet, using the Software Development Kit (SDK) which installs two emulators - one for compute and the other for storage. That brought up the question of the same kind of thing for SQL Azure. The short answer is that there isn’t one. While we’ll make the development experience for all versions of SQL Server, including SQL Azure more easy to write against, you can simply treat it as another edition of SQL Server. For instance, many of us use the SQL Server Developer Edition - which in versions up to 2008 is actually the Enterprise Edition - to develop our code. We might write that code against all kinds of environments, from SQL Express through Enterprise Edition. We know which features work on a certain edition, what T-SQL it supports and so on, and develop accordingly. We then test on the actual platform to ensure the code runs as expected. You can simply fold SQL Azure into that same development process. When you’re ready to deploy, if you’re using SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2 or higher, you can script out the database when you’re done as a SQL Azure script (with change notifications where needed) by selecting the right “Engine Type” on the scripting panel: (Thanks to David Robinson for pointing this out and my co-worker Rick Shahid for the screen-shot - saved me firing up a VM this morning!) Will all this change? Will SSMS, “Data Dude” and other tools change to include SQL Azure? Well, I don’t have a specific roadmap for those tools, but we’re making big investments on Windows Azure and SQL Azure, so I can say that as time goes on, it will get easier. For now, make sure you know what features are and are not included in SQL Azure, and what T-SQL is supported.   Win7 Home Prem 32-bit I usually use Firefox as my browser of choice and have been using the Addin Speed Dial for ages. I have many sites added on multiple tabs within it. I have just installed the Google Chrome browser which also has the Speed Dial Extension. Is there a way to export/import/copy/sync my Speed Dial settings i have in Firefox to the Speed Dial extension in Chrome? I know i can export from Speed Dial in Firefox but can't see any easy way to import from Speed Dial in Chrome.

In this wiki, you will be able to change the planes as well as the clubs, maybe in the future it will be possible to change the countries and manufacturers as well. But I have to think about this and I have to check how good this is. But, you will understand that it has to be expendable! That is really important. Use the planes controller with a edit page and the same for the clubs Route the planes and clubs controller to the wiki controller, so we have 1 nice "path" to edit this stuff. I want to have it called wiki that is for sure. Because that is what it is, but I am storing the planes and clubs data in its down table in my database. I think that is kinda obvious since it has to be maintainable. Right now you could edit a plane via the url: example.com/wiki/planes/edit/Duo_Discus.html Do you think that is better than example.com/planes/edit/Duo_Discus.html since it is easy to understand for the user, that he is working in the wiki instead of in the planes ? Or do you think this will break the user experience?

  Getting from client/server based 4GLs and databases where the 4GL is tightly linked to the database to Oracle and the cloud is not easy. The least risky and expensive option (in the short term) is to use the Progress OpenEdge DataServer for Oracle: Progress OpenEdge DataServer This eliminates the need to have to migrate the Progress 4GL to Java/J2EE. The database can be migrated using SQLWays Ispirer: Ispirer SQLWays ProgressDB migrations tool The Progress 4GL can remain as is. In order to get the application on the cloud there are a few approaches: 1. VDI - Virtual Desktop is a way to put all of the users desktop in a centralized environment off the desktop. This is great in cases where it is just not one client/server application that the user needs access too. In many cases, users will utilize MS Access, MS Excel, Crystal Reports and other tools to get at the Progress DB and other centralized databases. Vmware's acquistion of Wanova shows how VDI is growing in usage. Citrix is the 800 pound gorilla in the VDI space with Citrix WinFrame (now called XenDesktop). Oracle offers a VDI solution that Oracle picked up when it acquired Sun. 2. Hypervisor Server Virtualization - Of course you can place applications written in client/server languages like Progress 4GL buy using server virtualization from Oracle, VMWare, Microsoft, Citrix and others. 3. Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (aka: Terminal Services Client) The entire idea is to eliminate all the client/server desktop devices and connections which require desktop software and database drivers.   Earlier I wrote a blog post about SQL SERVER – Move Database Files MDF and LDF to Another Location and in the blog post we discussed how we can change the location of the MDF and LDF files after database is already created. I had mentioned that we will discuss how to change the default location of the database. This way we do not have to change the location of the database after it is created at different locations. The ideal scenario would be to specify this default location of the database files when SQL Server Installation was performed. If you have already installed SQL Server there is an easy way to solve this problem. This will not impact any database created before the change, it will only affect the default location of the database created after the change. To change the default location of the SQL Server Installation follow the steps mentioned below: Go to Right Click on Servers >> Click on Properties >> Go to the Database Settings screen You can change the default location of the database files. All the future database created after the setting is changed will go to this new location. You can also do the same with T-SQL and here is the T-SQL code to do the same. • Windows Server firewall asking for advice

  Hello everyone, I have Windows Server 2003/2008 machine, and I deployed some application on this machine. I want to put this machine in a sandbox environment, which means I want this machine to be able to access only proxy/gateway, its private used SQL Server database server, and I want to avoid network access from this machine to other machines in lab server room. Any easy solutions? BTW: my current environment is, I have a server which runs some Beta software in a Lab server room. It connects internet through proxy/gateway. Since the software is Beta, I want to reduce the risk of being hacked from internet and controlled by hacking sofwtare to attack my other servers in the same Lab server. thanks in advance, George

• More advanced 'Apple Automator' software?

  Is there any software similar to automator but more advanced? In our situation we have two files with the same name, one is a MOV the other XML. We want to use some of the metadata within the XML to rename both files. Then we want to re-arrange the contents of the XML file so that it is compatible with another piece of software we use (I think this is called mapping) Essentially some software that takes a bunch of variable from existing file and peforms file actions to them. I imagine this would be an easy task using applescript, but im wondering if there is a OSX application similar to Automator that can do the above? Questions are: Is there software that can do the above? Could Automator achieve this? What is the name of this process? If no such software exists, what would be the best kind of script to use? eg. Make an Apple Script, python script etc.

• Only one user at once through remote

  Hi, This is probably an easy question for anyone used to servers, and I know I once managed to do it, but I don't remember how. I purchased a VPS and am able to connect correctly as Administrator, and can start, let's say, MyServer.exe. Problem is, if I connect as Administrator on another device, this process is still there, but I can't see it. What I want to do is limit the connection per user to 1, and disconnect others when one logs in. I know there was a simpler term, a simple way, but I truly don't remember. And since I'm not used to the vocabulary of servers, I couldn't find it in the S/F questions. Thanks in advance!

• An efficient setup of several VPSs on one box?

  Hello all, I hope its ok to ask this question on serverfault, its not an actual fault but more of an implementation advice request. I would like to have a dedicated server that I can deploy my own VPSs on. These VPS will be various windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. I was thinking of buying a large Linux based dedicated server and then running VMWare Server or Virtualbox and adding my own images on there for each OS but I am thinking this isn't going to be cost effective and easy to maintain. I am hoping someone can help me with the perfect setup that is both cost effective and efficient so that I can have 6 VPS at my disposal that I can easily control. Thanks all for any help.

  Setting up the rewriting rules for the request proved to be quite easy in Nginx. For the response, not so much (at least, not for me). I want to strip the Content-Type header from the response if the Content-Length header of the response isn't set. I have the NginxHttpHeadersMoreModule installed, so that should allow me to remove the header, but I can't seem to find a way to check for the existence of the Content-Length header of the response using a rule in Nginx's configuration. Any suggestions on how to do this would be most appreciated!

• Paper Gold Rush

  The last few days at the shop have been reminiscent of a marathon of Pawn Stars. Quite a few people have come in wanting to trade for store credit. Most of them have left disappointed. We did pick up a few things here and there (which hopefully I can sell.) The problem, in a nutshell, is that people get it in their head that a (YuGiOh) card is worth X amount because they looked it up 2-3 years a...go, or someone told them it was valuable... then they play it in their deck for a year without sleeves, and cram it in a binder covered in duct tape. By the time they bring the cards in to me, new sets have come out which often de-value the tournament usefulness of the card from $20 to *maybe* 50 cents, in mint condition. Which means I can offer them about 10-15 cents... only they are almost never in mint condition, which means I usually offer them nothing at all. Most of the time, you can watch their smile fade as I start going through their cards. It's kinda sad, really, since I know they think they've spent the last two years walking around with the keys to their own personal gold mine. I don't really enjoy seeing that look on a child's face. I like kids and I remember those moments when perception and reality crashed headlong into each other. It was seldom pretty. So, when I'm talking to a child, I try to take it easy on them and give them some suggestions on how to better preserve their cards. Sometimes though, it's an adult. Depending on the situation, my response to them varies pretty broadly. Most of the time though, I still feel pretty bad when it doesn't go their way.
