• vsftpd: chroot_local_user causes GNU/TLS-error

  Distro: Ubuntu 12.04.2 Server 32-bit Server client: vsftpd 2.3.5 (from default "main" repository) Problem: Since upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to Ubuntu 12.04 (nothing changed on client-side), vsftp has refused to make chroot-jails with the "chroot_local_user" directive on FTP(e/i)S-connections. Try to connect with an FTP user client and upload some files. With my setup, the above listed config works well at this point. Edit /etc/vsftpd.conf and set chroot_local_user= to YES. Make sure that chroot_list_enable= and/or chroot_list_file= are not set. Comment them out if they are. Save and exit. Run sudo restart vsftpd (or sudo service vsftpd restart if you like) in a terminal. Try to connect with an FTP user client. You should see a message more or less like this: GnuTLS error -15: An unexpected TLS packet was received. This is an issue for me, as I do not want FTP-sessions to be able to list files outside the user's home folder. I have checked with several client-side apps, and I get the same results with every one of them. Filezilla is not so good regarding cipher methods nowadays, but as I am able to make an FTP(e)s-connection over TLS (as long as chroot'ing is disabled and ssl_ciphers is set to HIGH) I have a feeling ciphers are not the issue this time, and that I won't find the answer by tweaking configs on the client side. My vsftpd.log stays empty, even though debug_ssl and log_ftp_protocol are enabled, so no info there either.

  Want to test drive iPad without heading over to an Apple store?  Here’s a way you can experience some of the iPad UI straight from your browser! The iPad is the latest gadget from Apple to wow the tech world, and people even waited in line all night to be one of the first to get their hands on one.  Thanks to a simple JavaScript trick, however, you can get a feel for some of its new features without leaving your computer.  This won’t let you try out everything on the iPad, but it will let you see how the new lists and pop-over menus work just like they do in the new apps. Test drive the iPad’s UI from your browser Normally, the Apple iPhone developer library online looks like a standard webpage. But, on the iPad, it looks and feels like a full-blown native iPad app.  With a nifty JavaScript trick from boredzo.org you can use this same interface on your PC.  Since the iPad uses the Safari browser, we ran this test in Safari for Windows.  If you don’t already have it installed, you can download it from Apple (link below) and setup as normal. Now, open Safari and browse to Apple’s developer page at: http://www.developer.apple.com   Now, enter the following in the address bar, and press Enter. javascript:localStorage.setItem('debugSawtooth', 'true')   Finally, click this link to go to the iPhone OS documentation. http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/iPad/ After a short delay, it should open in full iPad style! The left menu works just like the menus on the iPad, complete with transitions.  It feels entirely like a native application, instead of a webpage.  To scroll through text, click and pull up or down similar to the way you would use it on a touch screen. Some pages even include a pop-over menu like many of the new iPad apps use. Note that the page will be rendered for the size of your browser, and if you resize your window the page will not resize with it.  Simply press F5 to reload the page, and it will resize to fit the new window size.  If you resize your window to be tall and narrow, like the iPad in horizontal mode, the webpage will change and the left menu will disappear in lieu of a drop-down menu just like it would if you rotated the iPad. This works in Chrome as well, since it, like Safari, is based on Webkit.  However, it didn’t seem to work in our test on Firefox or other browsers. • Is there a way to capture the "network user name" and the "host name" during a "login failed" alert

  I am a SQL Server 7 DBA and I would like to "improve" the default "Login failed" alert that brings SQL 7. I need a way to know what "user" (network user name) was trying to connect to the server (not only the SQL user account) and I would like to know from where the user was trying to connect (the hostname). Does someone know if this is possible? Using the SQL Profiler is not the best way since is a resource consuming task. Would be a way to setup an alert for doing this? Thanks in advance.

• PHP oci8 dll not loading on windows 64 bit XP. What am I doing wrong?

  on win 64, I installed apache, php etc. Everything works fine, except the oracle part. I can connect to oracle from sql developer which means my tnsnames.ora file is correct. When apache starts, there are no errors in the logs. But when I try to connect to oracle from my database, oracle module php_oci8.dll is not loaded. What am I doing wrong? The oci8.dll line in php.ini is there, it is uncommented There are no errors in the apache logs extension_dir in php.ini file points to the correct location

  I set up a ssh server through ssh-host-config. Then I started the server. net start sshd The CYGWIN sshd service is starting. The CYGWIN sshd service was started successfully. When I try to connect I get: ssh myusername@localhost ssh: connect to host localhost port 22: Connection refused I tried to allow port 22 in Windows Firewall, but that didn't change anything. And because I'm trying to ssh locally I don't think Windows Firewall is the culprit. I'm using Windows 7 and What should I look for to fix this problem?

I have set up a VPN on a windows server (single VPS server), and I can connect from a remote computer and I get an IP assigned correctly (from 192.168.1.1 - 255) Next I configured IIS (running on the same machine) IP Address and Domain Restrictions to only allow only IP address range 192.168.1.0 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 When I connect to the VPN with "Use Default Gateway on Remote Network" (so that requests must go through the vpn), I get a 403 from the internal sites.   So we have 2 servers all running at the same web host. We have bind MySQL to listen on the public ip-address of the database server and the web server connects to it from the public ip. Both servers run on the same private network. Currently, the DB connect method from our php script takes about 3ms to connect to the MySQL database server host. • graphics cards with no HDMI output

  I am currently looking at Gainward GTX260 896MB GS GLH, but I've seen it also on the x275 version - the card doesn't have an HDMI output, only two dvi and one tv out (s-video?). They claim they support HDMI using a dvi-HDMI converter. Will I get a true high definition quality on my TV (assuming it supports it) like that? Or is it not as good, and I should stick to cards that have an HDMI output (ATI), or pay way too much for x295? What about connecting the audio? The x260 comes with an internal spdif cable - does that mean I can connect my soundcard to my graphics card, and have the audio come out through the dvi, and into the HDMI cable? Or am I mixing it all up here, and I have to somehow connect the sound to the TV using a seperate cable (Hoping it has a seperate audio-in for the HDMI channel)?

• Problems accessing FileZilla FTP Server from static IP

  I'm trying to connect to my FTP server from my external IP address on Comcast Business. On the gateway I've set up port-forwarding on ports 20-21 to my server. Additionally I've forwarded ports 7000-8000 to my server for use in passive mode. In my FileZilla Server application I've set up passive mode to use my static IP and to use the subset of ports listed above. Unfortunately, it doesn't work through the external static IP for some reason, but I can internally. When I try to connect through static IP, the FileZila monitor says Connected, sending welcome message.... 220 FileZillaServer version 0.9.37 beta could not send reply, disconnected My firewall doesn't register any block events and windows firewall is disabled. What am I doing wrong or missing?

• Dell PR03X port replicator and DisplayPort to DVI adapter not detecting second monitor

  I have a Dell M4400 connected to a PR03X port replicator/docking station. I use the DVI port to connect it to a first Dell 2208WFP monitor and I'm trying to use a DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter to connect it to a second Dell 2208WFP monitor. The second monitor, connected via the DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter immediately goes into sleep mode and the laptop doesn't detect it. What is really weird is that it did detect it the first time I plugged it in but after I unplugged the monitor and plugged it back in it stopped working. I swapped the monitors round and it detected them both but after unplugging the monitor connected via the DisplayPort-to-DVI and plugging it in again it stopped working. Both monitors work if plugged in directly to the DVI port. Is there some way to force re-detection? Any ideas?

If I set up a custom service on my fortigate firewall for ftps with source ports 990-50050 and destination ports 990-50050, set it to a firewall policy and connect from a client it connects and works successfully. If I create a service FTPS Control with source port 990 and destination port 990 and another service,FTP Data with source ports 50000-50050 and destination ports 50000-50050 add them to a group FTPSSL, replace the ftps policy with FTPSSL and try connecting it tries to connect to port 990 and eventually times out. Is there a way to configure the service to only use the ports I need and not every port from 990 up?

  I have an old PC which I want to use for internet browsing. I tried using Puppy Linux (version 4.3.1) for the same but have not been able to connect. I connect via PPPoE. My network card is RTL 8029b which is automatically detected by Puppy Linux. However, the LED indicator on the MODEM designating LAN connectivity stays off. This post is being typed from the same PC running XP, so there are no connection issues. I am a complete newbie for Linux. can somebody point me to instructions.   So a little while ago I installed regular Ubuntu for a home server, but that gave me a lot of extra packages. What I should have done was to install Ubuntu Server, since I don't even own a screen to connect to it. Does anybody know of a way to convert my Ubuntu machine to a Ubuntu Server machine in one big swoop? It has to be done over SSH, since I don't have a screen to connect to it, like I said. It's currently running 9.10, about to be upgraded to 10.4.

  Hi, after a other mac or macbook is connected with a mini display port to a new generation imac you can switch between the imac and the other connected mac pressing cmd+F2(brightness up) using the keyboard of the imac. i connect my macbook to my imac, switch to the macbook and connect the bluetooth keyboard and mouse of my imac to my macbook. after that i'm not able to switch back to my imac, because the keyboard is used on my macbook. i have a second mouse connected to my imac, so i'd would be cool to switch views and control my imac with my second mouse. is it possible to send the shortcut cmd+F2 to my imac from my macbook? via command line or something? using apple script? all ideas are welcome, thanks!

• Webserver: chrooted PHP gives mysql.sock error when attempting to reach mysql

  Hey guys, I've configured an Ubuntu webserver with Nginx + PHP5-FPM. I've created a chrooted environment (using jailkit) that I'm tossing my developers into, from where they can develop their test applications. Chroot jail: /home/jail Nginx and PHP5-FPM run outside the chroot, but are configured to function with websites within the chrooted environment. So far, Nginx and PHP5-FPM are serving up files without issue, except for the following: When attempting to connect to MySQL, we receive this error: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2002] Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' Now, I believe the issue is due to the non-chrooted php.ini referencing mysqld.sock outside of the chroot environment (it's actually using the MySQL default setting currently). My question is, how can I configure PHP to access MySQL via loopback or similar? (Found that as a suggestion in a google result, but without any instructions) Or if I'm missing some other obvious setting, let me know. If there's an option of creating a hardlink (that would remain available even if mysql is restarted), that would be handy as well.

• Enabling Multiple Monitor Support from Terminal Services/Remote Desktop over Citrix

  Our Remote Desktop/Terminal Services solution where I work relies on Citrix for machines not connected via the VPN. We're using Citrix Xen server (I'm pretty sure) and I'm going to try to connect to a Windows 7 Host (my work computer) and I think the RDC client runs on a Win2003 host (exposed via Citrix). Is it possible to take advantage of Windows 7 multiple monitor support for RDC with this setup? Would I need to try getting my Citrix guys to have a different host machine for the RDC (Win2008, or Win7?)? I'm probably going to connect using the OS X Citrix client, but I'd be willing to BootCamp/Fusion up a Windows instance to work remotely, as well. I really want to be able to use multiple monitors remotely. It does "span" multiple montiors currently (I have a 3000x1024 desktop, for example) but I'd rather it be "true" multiple monitor instead of one giant desktop, if possible.

• Mac Mini's internet very slow, every other device fine (PC, iPhone, Xbox 360)

  I recently haven't used my Mac Mini for about 5 days (however it was left on). I seem to be able to connect and get great download / upload speeds through my PC, Xbox 360, iPhone and parents' laptop. However, my Mac Mini is very slow. OS X's Mail.app is downloading mail at 0.4kbps and then dropping to 0. Skype file transfers are doing the same. Browsing the net is a terrible experience. It is taking 30 seconds or more to download basic pages. All of my devices connect wirelessly to a Netgear router / modem. I have tried giving the Mac Mini a manual IP, and renew DHCP lease, as well as flush DNS in Terminal. I have also rebooted the router / modem twice, and the Mac Mini twice. Do you know what could be causing this? Thanks

• Wireless with WEP extremely slow on an Acer Timeline 4810T with a Centrino Wireless-N 1000

  I've upgraded an Acer Timeline 4810T to Ubuntu 11.10. Everything works fine except for the darn wireless interface (network manager). I just tested the wireless interface over a non-encrypted signal and it works beautifully. The issue is definitely related to WEP. Unfortunately, some of the networks I need to connect to are WEP encrypted, therefore this is a serious issue for me that is preventing me from using Ubuntu on my laptop. This was no problem in 11.04 and prior. Is there a simple solution for this? Any suggestions? Here's more hardware information. I tested that on the server and it works fine. The problem is, I could not get remote SFTP access to the server to work right. The example above is what I keep on running into. I have been trying to figure out how to solve this problem for 2 days now. I am not sure if it have to do with /etc/ssh/sshd_config. Is it something that I am not aware of? I am hoping that you could help point me to the right place for this issue.
