• How to monitor bandwidth use of each device on wifi network

  I have in my home a standard Comcast cable internet connection. I have it going from the wall to a cable modem, and from the modem to a late-series Linksys router, which provides wired and wireless networking. The vast majority of the users are wireless connections. For day-to-day tasks, this connection is fully sufficient for all my needs. However, on regular occassions, we have social gatherings that involve many people bringing laptops and other PCs and using the network and internet simultaneously, frequently for gaming. I have no administrative oversight over these machines; they have been known to be riddled with spyware and/or bloatware or be running torrents, legal or otherwise. The only reason I care is that on a regular basis, one of the machines will flatline my internet bandwith, and consume it all in order to upload/download/spam people/whatever. When this happens, the latency of the connections for gaming and the like becomes unacceptable, and everyone suffers. My question is: Is there a system I can set up whereby I can easily monitor the various systems connected to my wireless connection, see how much bandwith each one is using, and for what ends? That way, at a glance, I can spot the offending machine and kick it from the connection, without having to go from machine to machine, checking each one's "bandwith used" properties manually, and dealing with the owner's indignant protests all the while. I understand this will likely involve 3rd-party software and/or hardware; my issue is I don't even know where to begin.

• Windows: disable remote access of local drive, even by domain admin

  We have a network of Windows 7 PCs that are managed as part of a domain. What we want is for the domain admin to be unable to view the PC's local drive (C:) unless he is physically at the PC. In other words, no remote desktop and no ability to use UNC. In other words, the domain admin should not be allowed to put \\user_pc\c$ in Windows Explorer and see all the files on that computer, unless he is physically present at the PC itself. Edit: to clarify some of the questions/comments that have come up. Yes, I am an admin---but a complete Windows novice. And yes, for the sake of this and my similar questions, it is fair to assume that I am working for someone who is paranoid. I understand the arguments about this being a "social problem versus a technical problem", and "you should be able to trust your admins", etc. But this is the situation in which I find myself. I'm basically new to Windows system administration, but am tasked with creating an environment that is secure by the company owner's definition---and this definition is clearly very different from what most people expect. In short, I understand that this is an unusual request. But I'm hoping there is enough expertise in the ServerFault community to point me in the right direction.

• Some Apps don't start on Windows 8 Release Preview

  I recently installed the Release Preview of Windows 8 in a virtual machine. Some apps do not work. When I open them (by clicking on their tile in the start screen) I see a splash screen and nothing else happens. Sometimes the app crashes after 30 seconds, sometimes it just keeps on loading. A good example is the "Map"-App from Windows 8 or the app "Cookbook" by Bewise. I installed Cookbook and when I had a look at the task manager I saw that it was the 32bit version running, but I have an x64 Windows 8... Could this be a problem? Shouldn't the Windows Store download the correct version? This is the setup of my virtual machine: Windows 8 Release Preview x64 Oracle VirtualBox 4 of 8 cores from host system 8 of 16 GB RAM from the host system 256 MB graphics memory guest additions installed resolution 1920 x 1080 Do you need further information? Unfortunately there is no error message... I just see the start screen of the app with its logo and it keeps loading, but nothing happens. Other Apps (like Mail, Video, Social, etc.) work fine.

• 'The rpc server is unavailable' or 'access is denied' error when using Remote desktop Services Manager on Windows 7 (but mstsc.exe works!)

  I am trying to connect to a Windows XP workstation from a Windows 7 Ultimate workstation using Remote Desktop Services Manager. I am able to do a Remote Desktop (mstsc.exe) session from the Win7 machine to the WinXP machine with no problem at all. When running the Remote Desktops Admin (tsmmc.msc) too on a Windows XP box, I can also connect with no problem. However, when I use the new Remote Desktop Services Manager on Windows 7 and try to connect, I get the error: "The rpc server is unavailable" What could cause this? Has there been some fundamental change in Remote Desktop Services Manager, does it connect in a different way somehow? Update #1 Turned off firewall on the Windows XP box and the "The rpc server is unavailable" error went away; so RDSM seems to be using an entirely new port/connection/service compared to mstsc.exe or the old Remote Desktops Admin tool. Now... after disabling the firewall, I get a new error: Access is Denied. After doing some googling, I found some articles discussing this; basically, the error is very misleading - the actual problem is, if either side of the connection has dual monitors, and they are not both Win7 Ultimate, then you cannot connect using Remote Desktop Services Manager...the reason is, by default it uses the /multimon switch, and this switch requires a certain level of Windows license - and, there seems to be no way of changing this default (if anyone knows of a way to change this default, please post an answer or comment!). • What to do with old laptop screens?

  This question is inspired by another SU question I came across earlier today: What to do with old hard drives? It made me think about two long-dead laptops I have with perfectly good screens still inside. One is a Dell Inspiron 5100 and the other is an Averatec E1200, but responses need not be geared towards those particular models' screens. Rules, based heavily on the original question's: Objectives and suggestions to keep in mind when you post an answer : Should showcase your geekiness, be plain ol' fun, serve a social purpose or benefit the community. Your answer need not be limited to only one screen. For a really good answer, I'll go out and buy additional leftover screens. Your answer need not be limited to one project per screen. If additional accessories need be purchased, make sure they are common. Don't tell me to get a moon rock or something. The projects you suggested should serve a useful purpose; art is nice, but functional art is way better. Thanks in advance, folks. EDIT: Found another related question. Fun projects to do with an old 17" LCD monitor EDIT 2: I, for one, am enjoying the new outpouring of creativity here. Best fifty bucks... I mean, rep points... I ever spent. EDIT 3: That does it. At the end of the week, there was a tie for most votes between the accepted answer and the game platform answer. The game platform answer was cooler, but less reasonable as a project to actually do; in other words, it was more moon rocky. • What is the correct approach i should use for an application that requires amazon S3 uploads and SimpleDB data management?

  I am developing an application for iOS and that is going smoothly, the problem is that I am very new at server sided things. I am totally confused about how to correctly use Amazon Web Services for this purpose. What I want to do is very simple. I want my application to be able to query a servlet hosted in EC2 to be able to retrieve pictures and data based on some criteria from S3 and SImpleDB respectively. Also the application should be able to upload pictures into a S3 bucket and register the information in the SImpleDB. My main concerns are security and costs, So far i was using Amazon Token Vending Machine but I haven't been successful when trying to customize it, and while researching I discovered that on the long run it is very expensive. The ultimate goal is to handle a "social" picture service for my iOS application. Being able to register new users, authenticate these users. See what permissions they have to which pictures from the bucked. And all this without having to worry about Third party people from accessing the private pictures of my users. Sorry for this question but I am really clueless about how to handle this... I have tried reading many articles but all these server stuff looks very scary.

• Building a small server farm

  Hi, I am planning to set up a Tech startup company that will provide web application solutions. Eventually we hope to diversify into different areas such as possibly social media or other services. For now we plan on running a high demand (from 1000 to 10,000 users in the first year) website running the application. This includes a MySQL database backend, email, and development servers. My question is then, what type of server arrangement will work best, that is ti say should i have a small cluster of ultra high power machines (E.G. Top of the range Xeons, with 12GB RAM) or will it be better to have more less powerful servers load balanced? Should I go for 1 - 2 u servers rack mounted ot would it be beter for it just to be tower servers for maintainability? Finally I would also like to know what kind of Internet and router i would need, I currently have 10mbit down and barely 1 mbit up, but soon our area will have a fiber optic connection with international speeds of up to 25 mbit / sec. • PetStore 2.0 - java.lang.RuntimeException: javax.naming.NamingException: Lookup failed for 'jdbc/Pet

  I download PetStore 2.0 from https://blueprints.dev.java.net/servlets/ProjectDocumentList?folderID=5315&expandFolder=5315&folderID=0. I tried to build them in netbean 6.8 and I got this error SEVERE: Exception while preparing the app java.lang.RuntimeException: javax.naming.NamingException: Lookup failed for 'jdbc/PetstoreDB' in SerialContext [Root exception is javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: PetstoreDB not found] Seems like it cant find 'jdbc/PetStoreDB'. So I went back to the website and it look like I have to build the database via Ant script. However, looking in the esb.config file, there is no section, like there is for the other esb SSO applications. Why might this section (and therefore the SSO app) be missing? How can I set it up?   Hi, I wrote a stateless EJB method allowing to get an entity in "read-only" mode. The way to do this is to get the entity with the EntityManager then detach it (using the JPA 2.0 EntityManager).   I've heard many times that all programming is really a subset of math. Some suggest that OO, at its roots, is mathematically based. I don't get the connection. Aside from some obvious examples: using induction to prove a recursive algorithm formal correctness proofs functional languages lambda calculus asymptotic complexity DFAs, NFAs, Turing Machines, and theoretical computation in general the fact that everything on the box is binary In what ways is programming really a subset of math? I'm looking for an explanation that might have relevance to enterprise/OO development (if there is a strong enough connection, that is). Thanks in advance. Edit: as I stated in a comment to an answer, math is uber important to programming, but what I struggle with is the "subset" argument.

  I inherited a web application that makes calls to a web service. It is being developed in VS2008 SP1 and deployed to IIS6 (2k3 Server R2). Since I upgraded to Windows 7 Enterprise RTM, the following line gets added to my Web.config: <extendedProtectionPolicy policyEnforcement="Never" /> The problem is that when I deploy this application to my web server I get the following error: The element 'transport' cannot contain child element 'extendedProtectionPolicy' because the parent element's content model is empty I can remove the line and it will work, but its a pain and I forget sometimes to remove it again (VS2008 adds seems to add it back whenever I load the solution!!). Is there anything that can be done? • ERROR: Could not contact the SSO server

  Hi, I'm getting the following error on my dev machine when attempting to manage SSO settings: ERROR: 0xC0002A0F : Could not contact the SSO server 'SSODB'. Check that SSO is configured and that the SSO service is running on that server. The Enterprise Single Sign-On Service, RPC service, and COM+ System Application service were all started when I checked, but I gave them a restart anyway and it didn't fix the problem. I can access the SSODB through SSMS. I unconfigured SSO through BizTalk and reconfigured it (successfully). Alas, this also did not help. SSO was previously working fine. I did notice this morning upon reboot that my browser home page was reset back to our corporate site (meaning something may have been pushed to machine this morning when I signed on) but no one else on my team is experiencing the same issues. I'm not sure what to try next. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Under logs folder, in my machine it is C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log, there are three kinds of files, ERRORLOG, ERRORLOG.1, ERRORLOG.2 ... ERRORLOG.6; FDLAUNCHERRORLOG, FDLAUNCHERRORLOG.1, FDLAUNCHERRORLOG.2, ... FDLAUNCHERRORLOG.6; log_207.trc, log_208.trc, ... My question is what are the differnet function of such log files? And why there are files ends with .1, .2, etc? thanks in advance, George

Please run `bundle install` (Bundler::PathError) where do i install the .bundle? where do i tell passenger which bundle to use? any hints? thanks!

• Creating a Wiki site in SharePoint 2010

  I have a SharePoint 2010 site set up and would like to add a Wiki site to it. Normally, to add a subsite to a parent site you would click "Site Actions" - "New Site" and choose the site type (e.g. Team Site) and it would work fine. In the case of adding a Wiki site, I choose "Enterprise Wiki", and get "Error An Unexpected Error has occured Correlation Id:...". So i took the CorrelationId and checked in the ULS files to see what the error is, and the first bad sign seems to be: SharePoint Foundation Feature Infrastructure " The element of type 'ContentTypeBinding' for feature 'EnterpriseWiki' (id: 76d688ad-c16e-4cec-9b71-7b7f0d79b9cd) threw an exception during activation: Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. Parameter name: Content type not found (Id: '0x010100C568DB52D9D0A14D9B2FDCC96666E9F2007948130EC3DB064584E219954237AF39004C1F8B46085B4D22B1CDC3DE08CFFB9C')." There are more errors in the log, but this seems to be the first one. Any ideas on whats going on? Thanks

• Visual Studio Crashes when using Crystal Reports Group Editor

  I have a crystal report in my Visual Studio 2008 ASP.NET project, and when I choose "Group Expert" from the Crystal Reports - Report menu, Visual Studio crashes / hangs and I have to use Task Manager to close the program. This happens no matter how many times I try, and oddly enough it seems to work fine on another computer with the same project. Any help at all in the right direction would be greatly appreciated as I am pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. I am using Visual Studio 2008 SP1, SQL Server 2005 Developer SP2, Windows Vista Enterprise SP1, and the version of Crystal Reports that came with the Visual Studio installation.

• SFML SetFramerateLimit Not Limiting Frame Rate

  Compiler: Visual C++ OS: Windows 7 Enterprise For some reason, Window::SetFramerateLimit isn't limiting the frame rate in the app I'm working on, but it works fine for others. The framerate is capped to 60, but mine jumps around at 100-99 and then goes down to 50 sometimes. It actually causes serious issues. For example, if I create many objects on screen, I'll see a heavy performance hit, whereas others report no change. Any ideas regarding why this is happening? If you need more information, I'd be happy to oblige. Thanks. P.S. I have strong reasons to believe that it is not simply a case of "their hardware is just more powerful than yours."
