  • MVC Portable Areas Enhancement &ndash; Embedded Resource Controller

    - by Steve Michelotti
    MvcContrib contains a feature called Portable Areas which I’ve recently blogged about. In short, portable areas provide a way to distribute MVC binary components as simple .NET assemblies where the aspx/ascx files are actually compiled into the assembly as embedded resources. This is an extremely cool feature but once you start building robust portable areas, you’ll also want to be able to access other external files like css and javascript.  After my recent post suggesting portable areas be expanded to include other embedded resources, Eric Hexter asked me if I’d like to contribute the code to MvcContrib (which of course I did!). Embedded resources are stored in a case-sensitive way in .NET assemblies and the existing embedded view engine inside MvcContrib already took this into account. Obviously, we’d want the same case sensitivity handling to be taken into account for any embedded resource so my job consisted of 1) adding the Embedded Resource Controller, and 2) a little refactor to extract the logic that deals with embedded resources so that the embedded view engine and the embedded resource controller could both leverage it and, therefore, keep the code DRY. The embedded resource controller targets these scenarios: External image files that are referenced in an <img> tag External files referenced like css or JavaScript files Image files referenced inside css files Embedded Resources Walkthrough This post will describe a walkthrough of using the embedded resource controller in your portable areas to include the scenarios outlined above. I will build a trivial “Quick Links” widget to illustrate the concepts. The portable area registration is the starting point for all portable areas. The MvcContrib.PortableAreas.EmbeddedResourceController is optional functionality – you must opt-in if you want to use it.  To do this, you simply “register” it by providing a route in your area registration that uses it like this: 1: context.MapRoute("ResourceRoute", "quicklinks/resource/{resourceName}", 2: new { controller = "EmbeddedResource", action = "Index" }, 3: new string[] { "MvcContrib.PortableAreas" }); First, notice that I can specify any route I want (e.g., “quicklinks/resources/…”).  Second, notice that I need to include the “MvcContrib.PortableAreas” namespace as the fourth parameter so that the framework is able to find the EmbeddedResourceController at runtime. The handling of embedded views and embedded resources have now been merged.  Therefore, the call to: 1: RegisterTheViewsInTheEmmeddedViewEngine(GetType()); has now been removed (breaking change).  It has been replaced with: 1: RegisterAreaEmbeddedResources(); Other than that, the portable area registration remains unchanged. The solution structure for the static files in my portable area looks like this: I’ve got a css file in a folder called “Content” as well as a couple of image files in a folder called “images”. To reference these in my aspx/ascx code, all of have to do is this: 1: <link href="<%= Url.Resource("Content.QuickLinks.css") %>" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> 2: <img src="<%= Url.Resource("images.globe.png") %>" /> This results in the following HTML mark up: 1: <link href="/quicklinks/resource/Content.QuickLinks.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> 2: <img src="/quicklinks/resource/images.globe.png" /> The Url.Resource() method is now included in MvcContrib as well. Make sure you import the “MvcContrib” namespace in your views. Next, I have to following html to render the quick links: 1: <ul class="links"> 2: <li><a href="http://www.google.com">Google</a></li> 3: <li><a href="http://www.bing.com">Bing</a></li> 4: <li><a href="http://www.yahoo.com">Yahoo</a></li> 5: </ul> Notice the <ul> tag has a class called “links”. This is defined inside my QuickLinks.css file and looks like this: 1: ul.links li 2: { 3: background: url(/quicklinks/resource/images.navigation.png) left 4px no-repeat; 4: padding-left: 20px; 5: margin-bottom: 4px; 6: } On line 3 we’re able to refer to the url for the background property. As a final note, although we already have complete control over the location of the embedded resources inside the assembly, what if we also want control over the physical URL routes as well. This point was raised by John Nelson in this post. This has been taken into account as well. For example, suppose you want your physical url to look like this: 1: <img src="/quicklinks/images/globe.png" /> instead of the same corresponding URL shown above (i.e., “/quicklinks/resources/images.globe.png”). You can do this easily by specifying another route for it which includes a “resourcePath” parameter that is pre-pended. Here is the complete code for the area registration with the custom route for the images shown on lines 9-11: 1: public class QuickLinksRegistration : PortableAreaRegistration 2: { 3: public override void RegisterArea(System.Web.Mvc.AreaRegistrationContext context, IApplicationBus bus) 4: { 5: context.MapRoute("ResourceRoute", "quicklinks/resource/{resourceName}", 6: new { controller = "EmbeddedResource", action = "Index" }, 7: new string[] { "MvcContrib.PortableAreas" }); 8:   9: context.MapRoute("ResourceImageRoute", "quicklinks/images/{resourceName}", 10: new { controller = "EmbeddedResource", action = "Index", resourcePath = "images" }, 11: new string[] { "MvcContrib.PortableAreas" }); 12:   13: context.MapRoute("quicklink", "quicklinks/{controller}/{action}", 14: new {controller = "links", action = "index"}); 15:   16: this.RegisterAreaEmbeddedResources(); 17: } 18:   19: public override string AreaName 20: { 21: get 22: { 23: return "QuickLinks"; 24: } 25: } 26: } The Quick Links portable area results in the following requests (including custom route formats): The complete code for this post is now included in the Portable Areas sample solution in the latest MvcContrib source code. You can get the latest code now.  Portable Areas open up exciting new possibilities for MVC development!

  • Can I add round cornres to HtmlPanelGrid in code or in page? If yes - how?

    - by Elena
    Hi all! I have a task - add round corners to HtmlPanelGrid. Now I am trying to do it with css (using 4 images for each corner - that css create our designer). I load css and try to do this in my code: this.grid = new HtmlPanelGrid(); this.grid.setStyleClass("toplist,toplist-top"); But no changes I could see in my page. I tried to load css and use it with tags, but it also didnt work and created one more problem - my jsf didn't reload and redisplay: <div class="toplist"> <div class="toplist-top"><h2>Top 10 List</h2></div> <div class="toplist-bg"> <div class="toplist-cont"> <rich:tab label="Top-List" id="screenTop"> <h:panelGrid id="topListTable" binding="#{chartBean.topListTable}" /> </rich:tab> <a4j:support event="onclick" reRender="menuSection" actionListener="#{chartBean.doChangeTab}" /> </div> </div> <div class="toplist-bottom"></div> </div> I am interesting of adding round corners to topListTable in the code. How can I do it? I load my css as: <link href="#{facesContext.externalContext.requestContextPath}/css/stylesheet.css" rel="styleSheet" type="text/css"/> If anybody knows, how can I add corners to the panelGrid. Sorry for stupid question, but I am newborn in jsf and richfaces, and I want to solve this task right Thanks!

  • Problem with z-index

    - by ripper234
    I'm trying to use z-index to layer a button and a div. The button appears behind the div, while according to z-index it should be in front of it. Here is the style elements associated with the button & div as captured by Firebug: Button button { position:relative; z-index:2; } Site.css (line 356) Inherited fromdiv#note19.sticky .sticky { text-align:center; } Site.css (line 360) Inherited fromtd.taskcell .taskcell { text-align:center; } Site.css (line 345) Inherited fromtable.tasksgrid table { border-collapse:collapse; } Site.css (line 221) Inherited frombody element.style { cursor:auto; } body { color:#696969; font-family:Verdana,Helvetica,Sans-Serif; font-size:0.75em; } Div .sticky .edit { height:100px; position:relative; vertical-align:middle; width:150px; z-index:1; } Site.css (line 371) Inherited fromdiv#note18.sticky .sticky { text-align:center; } Site.css (line 360) Inherited fromtd.taskcell .taskcell { text-align:center; } Site.css (line 345) Inherited fromtable.tasksgrid table { border-collapse:collapse; } Site.css (line 221) Inherited frombody element.style { cursor:auto; } body { color:#696969; font-family:Verdana,Helvetica,Sans-Serif; font-size:0.75em; } Note that the button has a z-index of 2, the div has a z-index of 1, and both are position:relative. Edit - full HTML is in this pastebin.

  • 'JQuery' is undefined

    - by Raja
    I am working on a ASP.net project created with local file system settings. I am using MVC and Jquery. Jquery is working fine when I run the application in debug mode i.e. in ASP.net Development server. I am trying to host the application in IIS 7. In hosted mode, it does not recognize Jquery and gives scripting error 'Jquery is undefined'. The locations of the script files is unchanged in both modes. Can anybody have any clue what can be the reason and how to solve this. My code look like this; <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" /> <script src="../../Scripts/MicrosoftAjax.debug.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="../../Scripts/MicrosoftMvcAjax.debug.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="../../Scripts/jquery-1.2.6.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <!-- YUI Styles --> <link href="../../Content/reset.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <link href="../../Content/fonts.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <link href="../../Content/grids.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <!-- /YUI Styles --> <link href="../../Content/knowledgebase.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <script type="text/javascript"> //this hides the javascript warning if javascript is enabled (function($) { $(document).ready(function() { $('#jswarning').hide(); }); })(jQuery); </script> <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="ScriptContent" runat="server" /> ....

  • jQuery background-position animation

    - by depi
    Hi guys, I've created an image which is basically a CSS sprite of 3 images together. It's size is 278x123 so they are basically 3 images of 278x41. What I am trying to do is to make an animation of that by changing the background position. I've tried many things, one of my not very working solution is the following: var $slogan = $('#header h2 span'); $slogan.css({backgroundPosition: '0px 0px'}); function slogan_animation() { if ($slogan.css('background-position') == '0px 0px') { $slogan.fadeIn('slow').css('background-position', '0px -41px').fadeOut('slow'); } else if ($slogan.css('background-position') == '0px -41px') { $slogan.fadeIn('slow').css('background-position', '0px -82px').fadeOut('slow'); } else if ($slogan.css('background-position') == '0px -82px') { $slogan.fadeIn('slow').css('background-position', '0px 0px').fadeOut('slow'); } } setInterval(slogan_animation, 2000); Any ideas how could I do that? Basically I just need to: - set my background position to "0px 0px", then move it to "0px -41px", then "0px -82px" and then loop it again from "0px 0px". It would be also great to have fadeIn() effect between those. Any ideas? Thank you.

  • jQuery UI datepicker will not display - full code included

    - by Bill Brasky
    I am having trouble displaying the jQuery datepicker as shown here: http://jqueryui.com/demos/datepicker/ I believe I downloaded all of the proper files, but to be certain, I started from scratch and ripped the demo site. Not all of it, but what I believed to be the important parts. The result is no datepicker to be shown and no javascript errors. Here is my full code sample: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://static.jquery.com/ui/css/base2.css" type="text/css" media="all" /> <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jqueryui/1.8.1/themes/base/jquery-ui.css" type="text/css" media="all" /> <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://static.jquery.com/ui/css/demo-docs-theme/ui.theme.css" type="text/css" media="all" /> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.1/jquery.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jqueryui/1.8.1/jquery-ui.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"> jQuery(function(){ jQuery("#datepicker").datepicker(); }); </script> </head> <body> <input type="text" id="datepicker" class="hasDatepicker" /> </body> </html> Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Building Reducisaurus URLs

    - by Alix Axel
    I'm trying to use Reducisaurus Web Service to minify CSS and Javascript but I've run into a problem... Suppose I've two unminified CSS at: http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/theme.php?color=red http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/typography.php?font=Arial According to the docs I should call the web service like this: http:/reducisaurus.appspot.com/css?url=http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/theme.php?color=red And if I want to minify both CSS files at once: http:/reducisaurus.appspot.com/css?url1=http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/theme.php?color=red&url2=http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/theme.php?color=red If I wanted to specify a different number of seconds for the cache (3600 for instance) I would use: http:/reducisaurus.appspot.com/css?url=http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/theme.php?color=red&expire_urls=3600 And again for both CSS files at once: http:/reducisaurus.appspot.com/css?url1=http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/theme.php?color=red&url2=http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/theme.php?color=red&expire_urls=3600 Now my question is, how does Reducisaurus knows how to separate the URLs I want? How does it know that &expire_urls=3600 is not part of my URL? And how does it know that &url2=... is not a GET argument of url1? I'm I doing this right? Do I need to urlencode my URLs? I took a peek into the source code and although my Java is very poor it seems that the methods acquireFromRemoteUrl() and getSortedParameterNames() from the BaseServlet.java file hold the answers to my question - if a GET argument name contains - or _ they should be ignored?! What about multiple &url(n)s?

  • jQuery multiple themes on one page

    - by lloydphillips
    This is driving me NUTS! I've followed the post here which just doesn't seem to be working: http://www.filamentgroup.com/lab/using_multiple_jquery_ui_themes_on_a_single_page/ I have a base theme, for examples sake it's the Smoothness theme from the jQuery UI gallery. Then I have a 'red' theme which basically colours the buttons red. Here is the theme I created. So I go to download my theme. Choose Advanced settings, set the scope to 'red' and my theme folder name to 'red' and download. First of all I'm not entirely 100% sure which folder I'm to copy over to my project is it the 'development-bundle\themes' folder (which contains my red folder) or the '\css\red' folder? I've tried both. The post above seems to suggest if I copy my themes folder and link to my theme in the css it'll work when I add a class of 'red' to a wrapper div or element. So I've linked the themes like so in my file: <link type="text/css" href="themes/base/jquery.ui.all.css" rel="stylesheet" /> <link type="text/css" href="themes/red/jquery.ui.all.css" rel="stylesheet" /> The base theme loads and works all honkey doorey but the red theme doesn't. I've got a button styled like so: <input type="submit" id="btn" value="A submit button" class="red" /> I've also tried: <div class="red"> <input type="submit" id="btn" value="A submit button" /> </div> Neither work. When I remove the 'themes/base/jquery.ui.all.css' css file link the button's aren't styled at all. Crazy! I'm pulling my hair out. Where am I going wrong? Surely they should just make it easy enough to download JUST the theme folder and reference the ui.all file.

  • Internal loop only runs once, containing loop runs endlessly

    - by Mark
    noob question I'm afraid. I have a loop that runs and rotates the hand of a clock and an internal loop that checks the angle of the hand if it is 90, 180, 270 and 360. On these 4 angles the corresponding div is displayed and its siblings removed. The hand loops and loops eternally, which is what I want, but the angle check only runs the loop once through the whole 360. As the hand passes through the angles it is correctly displaying and removing divs but is doesn't continue after the first revolution of the clock. I've obviously messed up somewhere and there is bound to be a more efficient way of doing all this. I am using jQueryRotate.js for my rotations. Thanks for your time. jQuery(document).ready(function(){ var angle = 0; setInterval(function(){ jQuery("#hand").rotate(angle); function movehand(){ if (angle == 90) { jQuery("#intervention").fadeIn().css("display","block").siblings().css("display","none"); } else if (angle == 180) { jQuery("#management").fadeIn().css("display","block").siblings().css("display","none"); } else if (angle == 270) { jQuery("#prevention").fadeIn().css("display","block").siblings().css("display","none"); } else if (angle == 360) { jQuery("#reaction").fadeIn().css("display","block").siblings().css("display","none"); } else {movehand;} }; movehand(); angle+=1; },10); });

  • jQuery class selector oddness

    - by x3sphere
    I'm using jQuery to change the background image of a button depending on the class associated with it on hover. It only works if I put the hover statements in separate functions, however. Why is this? Here's the NON working code, always evaluates to the .submit hover statement, even when that class is removed via the keyup event. $(function() { { $('.submit-getinfo').hover(function () { $(this).css( {backgroundPosition: "right bottom"} ); }, function() { $(this).css( {backgroundPosition: "right top"} ); //$(this).removeClass('submithover'); }); $('.submit').hover(function () { $(this).css( {backgroundPosition: "left bottom"} ); }, function() { $(this).css( {backgroundPosition: "left top"} ); //$(this).removeClass('submithover'); }); }}); Working code: $(function() { { $('.submit').hover(function () { $(this).css( {backgroundPosition: "left bottom"} ); }, function() { $(this).css( {backgroundPosition: "left top"} ); //$(this).removeClass('submithover'); }); }}); $('#test').bind('keyup', function() { if (url == 'devel') { $("#submit").addClass("submit-getinfo").removeClass("submit"); $('.submit-getinfo').hover(function () { $(this).css( {backgroundPosition: "right bottom"} ); }, function() { $(this).css( {backgroundPosition: "right top"} ); //$(this).removeClass('submithover'); }); } } ); I just fail to see why I have to put the hover statements in separate functions, instead of sticking both in the main DOM.

  • Apache mod_rewrite : How to REWRITE (or whatever) child directories to parent?

    - by ????
    Actually i am trying to make a PHP MVC like application. A basic one. The current milestone i am reaching already includes: Basic RESTful Routing Means, if i type: www.example.com/items/book/8888 .. it properly just stays there as it is and i can already slice out the URL by slashes / and loads the responsible Controllers .... etc from the top single index.php file. I mean, so it is OK for the backend PHP. But the only problem is, it still CAN NOT process the REWRITES properly. For example, the CSS & JS are BROKEN as if i VIEW PAGE SOURCE of the page www.example.com/items/book/8888, the asset files are being called as: www.example.com/items/book/8888/css/main.css www.example.com/items/book/8888/js/jquery.js .. which really are PROBLEMS because in the code is like: <link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" media="all" href="css/main.css"> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery.js"></script> So the question is: How can i use Apache REWRITE (or whatever approach) to make sure every ASSET FILES to be correctly being called from the DOCROOT. For example, if i am in the URL: www.example.com/items/book/8888 My ASSET FILES should still be called as: www.example.com/css/main.css www.example.com/js/jquery.js Or is there any other methods i need to follow? Please kindly help suggest. Thank you.

  • Why does dojo parsing time depend on css and images availability?

    - by Kniganapolke
    I have been profiling javascript on my page that uses dojo widgets. I don't use explicit parsing - the parser runs on page load. What I noticed is that if I clear browser cache before refreshing the page, dojo parsing takes much more time than if all the files are already cached. Note that we build all the required dojo modules into a layer (a single file), so we don't lazy-load any js files. I wonder if dojo parsing process depends on images and css resources, as far as I know it only instantiates widgets and injects dom nodes. Do you have any ideas why dojo parser runs longer (2-3 times longer in my case) when the cache is cleared?

  • What is the preferred way to associate css styles with GWT widgets (using UiBinder)?

    - by smallbec
    From the GWT page (http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/doc/latest/DevGuideUiCss.html#cssfiles), it mentions 2 ways (for modern application): Using a CssResource contained within a ClientBundle. Using an inline element in a UiBinder template. Modern GWT applications typically use a combination of CssResource and UiBinder. So my question is, when should I use a css file and create a CssResource for it, and when should I define styles directly in the ui.xml file using <ui:style>? Are there any performance implication (i.e. resource size to download on the client) with either of these ways?

  • Employer wants direct, no-hack, ie6 support for CSS. Should I talk him out of it?

    - by DavidR
    I'm currently employed by a website Designer, he gets the clients and sends me a mockup in a fireworks file, and I send him the html/css/js. The problem is that he wants direct ie6 compatibility for every site I build. That is, no conditional ie6 hack, no separate style sheets. A lot of my html has suffered because of it. I just started writing html with him last summer, he took me in as an intern and taught me everything about it. Since then I built 4 web pages, but I haven't yet made anything I'm really proud of. Should I be trying harder to create stellar code beside my limitations or should I set him down and explain that his demands are killing the code for modern browsers?

  • Is it bad practice to assign a css class for the sole purpose of finding it with jQuery?

    - by user187305
    I'm using ASP.NET, not the newest one with that clientIdMode stuff. So, the control ids are generated and funky. There are lots of ways of passing ids around, but lately I've been assigning a 'fake' css class to the control I'm interested in. Then in a js file I use jQuery to find the control. Is this bad practice? It seems a lot like the ajaxControlToolkit's behaviorId to me... Is the behaviorId bad practice as well?

  • Html + Css: How to create a auto-resizing rotated background?

    - by Sebastian P.R. Gingter
    Hi, image a complete black web page. On this web page is a 100% size white div that fills the whole page. I'd like to rotate this div by -7 degrees (or 7 degrees counter-clock wise). This will result in the black background being visible in triangles on the edges, just like you had placed a piece of paper on a desk and turned it a bit to the left. Actually this can be done with some css and it's working quite well (except for IE). The real problem now is: I'd like to have a normal, non-rotated div element on top of that to display the content in, so that only the background is rotated. Rotating a contained div counterwise doesn't work though, because through the two transformations the text will be blurry in all browsers. How can I realize that? Best would be a solution workiing in current Webkit browsers, FF3.5+ and IE7+. If only IE8+ I could live with that too.

  • Where should common static resources (images, js, css, etc) go in DotNetNuke?

    - by Joosh21
    Is there a recommended location to store static resources (images, css, js, etc) in a DotNetNuke 5.x installation? There are /images and /js folders as well as a /Resources folder that contains resources. There appears to be some overlap as MicrosoftAjax.js is in multiple locations (but might be different versions?). I also could put resources in a /DesktopModule/ModuleX location. Does anyone know if there is a difference in using any of these folders? I kinda like the idea of all static resources being under a common folder (/Resources) so I could set caching rule headers, permissions, etc on them in one place. Has anyone used a separate image server to serve DotNetNuke static content? http://stackoverflow.com/questions/913208/pros-and-cons-of-a-separate-image-server-e-g-images-mydomain-com

  • jQuery selector to target any CSS name (of multiple present) starting with a prefix?

    - by John K
    I'm considering one selection statement that would target one of many css class names in a single class attribute value based on a string prefix. For example, I want any detail- prefixed class names to get targeted from the following sample links. <a href="eg.html" class="detail-1 pinkify another"> <a href="eg.html" class="something detail-55 minded"> <a href="eg.html" class="swing narrow detail-Z"> <a href="eg.html" class="swing narrow detail-Z detail-88 detail-A"> It's reminiscent of how [class|="detail"] prefix selector works on a scalar attribute value, and also of .hasClass(className), but my question needs both concepts applied simultaneously. Note: The detail- prefix won't necessarily be the first class name of the bunch.

You can find them here and here.I am creating a small content website (only text,images and a contact form) for a friend of mine.He wanted to create a rollover gallery.The whole concept is that we have some small thumbnails on a page, the user hovers over them and they appear enlarged on a designated container/placeholder on a page. I am trying not to use Javascript scripts when I am using effects on a web page and this is what I will be doing in this post.  Well some people will say that HTML 5 is not supported in all browsers. That is true but most of the modern browsers support most of its recommendations. For people who still use IE6 some hacks must be devised.Well to be totally honest I cannot understand why anyone at this day and time is using IE 6.0.That really is beyond me.Well, the point of having a web browser is to be able to ENJOY the great experience that the WE? offers today.  Two very nice sites that show you what features and specifications are implemented by various browsers and their versions are http://caniuse.com/ and http://html5test.com/. At this times Chrome seems to support most of HTML 5 specifications.Another excellent way to find out if the browser supports HTML 5 and CSS 3 features is to use the Javascript lightweight library Modernizr.In this hands-on example I will be using Expression Web 4.0.This application is not a free application. You can use any HTML editor you like.You can use Visual Studio 2012 Express edition. You can download it here. In order to be absolutely clear this is not (and could not be ) a detailed tutorial on HTML 5. There are other great resources for that.Navigate to the excellent interactive tutorials of W3School.Another excellent resource is HTML 5 Doctor.For the people who are not convinced yet that they should invest time and resources on becoming experts on HTML 5 I should point out that HTML 5 websites will be ranked higher than others. Search engines will be able to locate better the content of our site and its relevance/importance since it is using semantic tags. Let's move now to the actual hands-on example. In this case (since I am mad Liverpool supporter) I will create a rollover image gallery of Liverpool F.C legends. I create a folder in my desktop. I name it Liverpool Gallery.Then I create two subfolders in it, large-images (I place the large images in there) and thumbs (I place the small images in there).Then I create an empty .html file called LiverpoolLegends.html and an empty .css file called style.css.Please have a look at the HTML Markup that I typed in my fancy editor package below<!doctype html><html lang="en"><head><title>Liverpool Legends Gallery</title><meta charset="utf-8"><link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css"></head><body><header><h1>A page dedicated to Liverpool Legends</h1><h2>Do hover over the images with the mouse to see the full picture</h2></header><ul id="column1"><li><a href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8927200#"><img src="thumbs/john-barnes.jpg" alt=""><img class="large" src="large-images/john-barnes-large.jpg" alt=""></a></li><li><a href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8927200#"><img src="thumbs/ian-rush.jpg" alt=""><img class="large" src="large-images/ian-rush-large.jpg" alt=""></a></li><li><a href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8927200#"><img src="thumbs/graeme-souness.jpg" alt=""><img class="large" src="large-images/graeme-souness-large.jpg" alt=""></a></li></ul><ul id="column2"><li><a href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8927200#"><img src="thumbs/steven-gerrard.jpg" alt=""><img class="large" src="large-images/steven-gerrard-large.jpg" alt=""></a></li><li><a href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8927200#"><img src="thumbs/kenny-dalglish.jpg" alt=""><img class="large" src="large-images/kenny-dalglish-large.jpg" alt=""></a></li><li><a href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8927200#"><img src="thumbs/robbie-fowler.jpg" alt=""><img class="large" src="large-images/robbie-fowler-large.jpg" alt=""></a></li></ul><ul id="column3"><li><a href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8927200#"><img src="thumbs/alan-hansen.jpg" alt=""><img class="large" src="large-images/alan-hansen-large.jpg" alt=""></a></li><li><a href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8927200#"><img src="thumbs/michael-owen.jpg" alt=""><img class="large" src="large-images/michael-owen-large.jpg" alt=""></a></li></ul></body></html> It is very easy to follow the markup. Please have a look at the new doctype and the new semantic tag <header>. I have 3 columns and I place my images in there.There is a class called "large".I will use this class in my CSS code to hide the large image when the mouse is not on (hover) an image Make sure you validate your HTML 5 page in the validator found hereHave a look at the CSS code below that makes it all happen.img { border:none;}#column1 { position: absolute; top: 30; left: 100; }li { margin: 15px; list-style-type:none;}#column1 a img.large {  position: absolute; top: 0; left:700px; visibility: hidden;}#column1 a:hover { background: white;}#column1 a:hover img.large { visibility:visible;}#column2 { position: absolute; top: 30; left: 195px; }li { margin: 5px; list-style-type:none;}#column2 a img.large { position: absolute; top: 0; left:510px; margin-left:0; visibility: hidden;}#column2 a:hover { background: white;}#column2 a:hover img.large { visibility:visible;}#column3 { position: absolute; top: 30; left: 400px; width:108px;}li { margin: 5px; list-style-type:none;}#column3 a img.large { width: 260px; height:260px; position: absolute; top: 0; left:315px; margin-left:0; visibility: hidden;}#column3 a:hover { background: white;}#column3 a:hover img.large { visibility:visible;}?n the first line of the CSS code I set the images to have no border.Then I place the first column in the page and then remove the bullets from the list elements.Then I use the large CSS class to create a position for the large image and hide it.Finally when the hover event takes place I make the image visible.I repeat the process for the next two columns. I have tested the page with IE 10 and the latest versions of Opera,Chrome and Firefox.Feel free to style your HTML 5 gallery any way you want through the magic of CSS.I did not bother adding background colors and borders because that was beyond the scope of this post. Hope it helps!!!!

  • Hosting a website on Heroku.... I know how to, but im running into problems!

    - by Thomas Miller
    I'm starting to learn more on the back-end scale of programing. Recently I started up Heroku for the second or third time. This time I actually installed the Git update to my Mac and installed Heroku in the terminal. I wanted to upload a static html site with the sinatra gem. Everything worked out fine inside the terminal, though I added sinatra after I got everything working and the file with the site hooked up to Heroku. In my logs I did see that I was missing the sinatra gem, so I installed it. My site contains both the proper app.rb and config.ru files. I have nothing showing up online. Just a blank screen! Contacting Heroku on this problem has been very difficult. I get a responce every day, and on every day I respond with a question to the answer that didn't help me at all. 2011-05-18T00:25:20+00:00 app[web.1]: 71.198.0.51 - - [17/May/2011 17:25:20] "GET /favicon.ico HTTP/1.1" 404 18 0.0008 2011-05-18T00:25:20+00:00 heroku[router]: GET pxlc.heroku.com/favicon.ico dyno=web.1 queue=0 wait=0ms service=2ms bytes=313 2011-05-18T00:25:26+00:00 app[web.1]: 71.198.0.51 - • Does Apache ever give incorrect "out of threads" errors?

    - by Eli Courtwright
    Lately our Apache web server has been giving us this error multiple times per day: [Tue Apr 06 01:07:10 2010] [error] Server ran out of threads to serve requests. Consider raising the ThreadsPerChild setting We raised our ThreadsPerChild setting from 50 to 100, but we still get the error. Our access logs indicate that these errors never even happen at periods of high load. For example, here's an excerpt from our access log (ip addresses and some urls are edited for privacy). As you can see, the above error happened at 1:07 and only a small handful of requests occurred in the several minutes leading up to the error: 99.88.77.66 - - [06/Apr/2010:00:59:33 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/jquery/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom/css/smoothness/images/ui-icons_222222_256x240.png HTTP/1.1" 304 - 99.88.77.66 - - [06/Apr/2010:00:59:34 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/jquery/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom/css/smoothness/images/ui-bg_glass_75_dadada_1x400.png HTTP/1.1" 200 111 99.88.77.66 - - [06/Apr/2010:00:59:34 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/jquery/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom/css/smoothness/images/ui-bg_glass_75_dadada_1x400.png HTTP/1.1" 200 111 99.88.77.66 - mpeu [06/Apr/2010:00:59:40 -0400] "GET /some/dynamic/content HTTP/1.1" 200 145049 55.44.33.22 - mpeu [06/Apr/2010:01:06:56 -0400] "GET /other/dynamic/content HTTP/1.1" 200 12311 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:56 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/jquery/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom/css/smoothness/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom.css HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:56 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/jquery/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom/js/jquery-1.3.2.min.js HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:56 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/jquery/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom/js/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom.min.js HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:56 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/jquery.tablesorter.min.js HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:56 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/date.js HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:56 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/pdfs/image1.gif HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:56 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/pdfs/image2.png HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:56 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/pdfs/image3.png HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:56 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/pdfs/image4.png HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:56 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/pdfs/image5.png HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:56 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/pdfs/image6.png HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:56 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/pdfs/image7.png HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:57 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/pdfs/image8.png HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:57 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/pdfs/image9.png HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:57 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/pdfs/imageA.png HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:57 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/jquery/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom/css/smoothness/images/ui-bg_flat_75_ffffff_40x100.png HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:59 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/jquery/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom/css/smoothness/images/ui-bg_highlight-soft_75_cccccc_1x100.png HTTP/1.1" 304 - 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:59 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/jquery/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom/css/smoothness/images/ui-bg_glass_75_e6e6e6_1x400.png HTTP/1.1" 200 110 55.44.33.22 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:06:59 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/jquery/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom/css/smoothness/images/ui-bg_glass_75_e6e6e6_1x400.png HTTP/1.1" 200 110 11.22.33.44 - mpeu [06/Apr/2010:01:18:03 -0400] "GET /other/dynamic/content HTTP/1.1" 200 12311 11.22.33.44 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:18:03 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/jquery/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom/js/jquery-1.3.2.min.js HTTP/1.1" 304 - 11.22.33.44 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:18:04 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/jquery/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom/css/smoothness/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom.css HTTP/1.1" 200 27374 11.22.33.44 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:18:04 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/jquery/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom/js/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom.min.js HTTP/1.1" 304 - 11.22.33.44 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:18:04 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/jquery.tablesorter.min.js HTTP/1.1" 200 12795 11.22.33.44 - - [06/Apr/2010:01:18:04 -0400] "GET /WebRepository/date.js HTTP/1.1" 200 25809 For what it's worth, we're running the version of Apache that ships with Oracle 10g (some 2.0 version), and we're using mod_plsql to generate our dynamic content. Since the Apache server runs as a separate process and the database doesn't record any problems when this error occurs, I'm doubtful that Oracle is the problem. Unfortunately, the errors are freaking out our sysadmins, who are inclined to blame any and all problems which occur with the server on this error. Is this a known bug in Apache that I simply haven't been able to find any reference to through Google?

  • A Closable jQuery Plug-in

    - by Rick Strahl
    In my client side development I deal a lot with content that pops over the main page. Be it data entry ‘windows’ or dialogs or simple pop up notes. In most cases this behavior goes with draggable windows, but sometimes it’s also useful to have closable behavior on static page content that the user can choose to hide or otherwise make invisible or fade out. Here’s a small jQuery plug-in that provides .closable() behavior to most elements by using either an image that is provided or – more appropriately by using a CSS class to define the picture box layout. /* * * Closable * * Makes selected DOM elements closable by making them * invisible when close icon is clicked * * Version 1.01 * @requires jQuery v1.3 or later * * Copyright (c) 2007-2010 Rick Strahl * http://www.west-wind.com/ * * Licensed under the MIT license: * http://www.opensource.org/licenses/mit-license.php Support CSS: .closebox { position: absolute; right: 4px; top: 4px; background-image: url(images/close.gif); background-repeat: no-repeat; width: 14px; height: 14px; cursor: pointer; opacity: 0.60; filter: alpha(opacity="80"); } .closebox:hover { opacity: 0.95; filter: alpha(opacity="100"); } Options: * handle Element to place closebox into (like say a header). Use if main element and closebox container are two different elements. * closeHandler Function called when the close box is clicked. Return true to close the box return false to keep it visible. * cssClass The CSS class to apply to the close box DIV or IMG tag. * imageUrl Allows you to specify an explicit IMG url that displays the close icon. If used bypasses CSS image styling. * fadeOut Optional provide fadeOut speed. Default no fade out occurs */ (function ($) { $.fn.closable = function (options) { var opt = { handle: null, closeHandler: null, cssClass: "closebox", imageUrl: null, fadeOut: null }; $.extend(opt, options); return this.each(function (i) { var el = $(this); var pos = el.css("position"); if (!pos || pos == "static") el.css("position", "relative"); var h = opt.handle ? $(opt.handle).css({ position: "relative" }) : el; var div = opt.imageUrl ? $("<img>").attr("src", opt.imageUrl).css("cursor", "pointer") : $("<div>"); div.addClass(opt.cssClass) .click(function (e) { if (opt.closeHandler) if (!opt.closeHandler.call(this, e)) return; if (opt.fadeOut) $(el).fadeOut(opt.fadeOut); else $(el).hide(); }); if (opt.imageUrl) div.css("background-image", "none"); h.append(div); }); } })(jQuery); The plugin can be applied against any selector that is a container (typically a div tag). The close image or close box is provided typically by way of a CssClass - .closebox by default – which supplies the image as part of the CSS styling. The default styling for the box looks something like this: .closebox { position: absolute; right: 4px; top: 4px; background-image: url(images/close.gif); background-repeat: no-repeat; width: 14px; height: 14px; cursor: pointer; opacity: 0.60; filter: alpha(opacity="80"); } .closebox:hover { opacity: 0.95; filter: alpha(opacity="100"); } Alternately you can also supply an image URL which overrides the background image in the style sheet. I use this plug-in mostly on pop up windows that can be closed, but it’s also quite handy for remove/delete behavior in list displays like this: you can find this sample here to look to play along: http://www.west-wind.com/WestwindWebToolkit/Samples/Ajax/AmazonBooks/BooksAdmin.aspx For closable windows it’s nice to have something reusable because in my client framework there are lots of different kinds of windows that can be created: Draggables, Modal Dialogs, HoverPanels etc. and they all use the client .closable plug-in to provide the closable operation in the same way with a few options. Plug-ins are great for this sort of thing because they can also be aggregated and so different components can pick and choose the behavior they want. The window here is a draggable, that’s closable and has shadow behavior and the server control can simply generate the appropriate plug-ins to apply to the main <div> tag: $().ready(function() { $('#ctl00_MainContent_panEditBook') .closable({ handle: $('#divEditBook_Header') }) .draggable({ dragDelay: 100, handle: '#divEditBook_Header' }) .shadow({ opacity: 0.25, offset: 6 }); }) The window is using the default .closebox style and has its handle set to the header bar (Book Information). The window is just closable to go away so no event handler is applied. Actually I cheated – the actual page’s .closable is a bit more ugly in the sample as it uses an image from a resources file: .closable({ imageUrl: '/WestWindWebToolkit/Samples/WebResource.axd?d=TooLongAndNastyToPrint', handle: $('#divEditBook_Header')}) so you can see how to apply a custom image, which in this case is generated by the server control wrapping the client DragPanel. More interesting maybe is to apply the .closable behavior to list scenarios. For example, each of the individual items in the list display also are .closable using this plug-in. Rather than having to define each item with Html for an image, event handler and link, when the client template is rendered the closable behavior is attached to the list. Here I’m using client-templating and the code that this is done with looks like this: function loadBooks() { showProgress(); // Clear the content $("#divBookListWrapper").empty(); var filter = $("#" + scriptVars.lstFiltersId).val(); Proxy.GetBooks(filter, function(books) { $(books).each(function(i) { updateBook(this); showProgress(true); }); }, onPageError); } function updateBook(book,highlight) { // try to retrieve the single item in the list by tag attribute id var item = $(".bookitem[tag=" +book.Pk +"]"); // grab and evaluate the template var html = parseTemplate(template, book); var newItem = $(html) .attr("tag", book.Pk.toString()) .click(function() { var pk = $(this).attr("tag"); editBook(this, parseInt(pk)); }) .closable({ closeHandler: function(e) { removeBook(this, e); }, imageUrl: "../../images/remove.gif" }); if (item.length > 0) item.after(newItem).remove(); else newItem.appendTo($("#divBookListWrapper")); if (highlight) { newItem .addClass("pulse") .effect("bounce", { distance: 15, times: 3 }, 400); setTimeout(function() { newItem.removeClass("pulse"); }, 1200); } } Here the closable behavior is applied to each of the items along with an event handler, which is nice and easy compared to having to embed the right HTML and click handling into each item in the list individually via markup. Ideally though (and these posts make me realize this often a little late) I probably should set up a custom cssClass to handle the rendering – maybe a CSS class called .removebox that only changes the image from the default box image. This example also hooks up an event handler that is fired in response to the close. In the list I need to know when the remove button is clicked so I can fire of a service call to the server to actually remove the item from the database. The handler code can also return false; to indicate that the window should not be closed optionally. Returning true will close the window. You can find more information about the .closable class behavior and options here: .closable Documentation Plug-ins make Server Control JavaScript much easier I find this plug-in immensely useful especial as part of server control code, because it simplifies the code that has to be generated server side tremendously. This is true of plug-ins in general which make it so much easier to create simple server code that only generates plug-in options, rather than full blocks of JavaScript code.  For example, here’s the relevant code from the DragPanel server control which generates the .closable() behavior: if (this.Closable && !string.IsNullOrEmpty(DragHandleID) ) { string imageUrl = this.CloseBoxImage; if (imageUrl == "WebResource" ) imageUrl = ScriptProxy.GetWebResourceUrl(this, this.GetType(), ControlResources.CLOSE_ICON_RESOURCE); StringBuilder closableOptions = new StringBuilder("imageUrl: '" + imageUrl + "'"); if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(this.DragHandleID)) closableOptions.Append(",handle: $('#" + this.DragHandleID + "')"); if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(this.ClientDialogHandler)) closableOptions.Append(",handler: " + this.ClientDialogHandler); if (this.FadeOnClose) closableOptions.Append(",fadeOut: 'slow'"); startupScript.Append(@" .closable({ " + closableOptions + "})"); } The same sort of block is then used for .draggable and .shadow which simply sets options. Compared to the code I used to have in pre-jQuery versions of my JavaScript toolkit this is a walk in the park. In those days there was a bunch of JS generation which was ugly to say the least. I know a lot of folks frown on using server controls, especially the UI is client centric as the example is. However, I do feel that server controls can greatly simplify the process of getting the right behavior attached more easily and with the help of IntelliSense. Often the script markup is easier is especially if you are dealing with complex, multiple plug-in associations that often express more easily with property values on a control. Regardless of whether server controls are your thing or not this plug-in can be useful in many scenarios. Even in simple client-only scenarios using a plug-in with a few simple parameters is nicer and more consistent than creating the HTML markup over and over again. I hope some of you find this even a small bit as useful as I have.
